I don't think miss a couple of the easy runs is a big deal, missing the really long runs like the 18 or 20 miler ones I think would need to be made up but I think you will be ok with making up the short runs by the 6 miler that you did.

Question - when trying to stick to my marathon training plan, I missed 2 days of short 3 mile runs. To make up for it last night, I did 6 miles. Do you think this is an ok substitute? I don't plan on making it the "norm" but figured it was better than not doing the miles....

Cincinnati is starting a new half marathon this October, for anyone who is interested. I am considering it, but it's 6 days after my full marathon, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be ready to run it. I mean, I'll be trained, but my joints will probably not be fully recovered from Columbus.

I am running the Duke City Marathon on Oct 17 ( in Albuquerque, NM), good luck everyone that's training! I train in Las Cruces, NM which is really hot ( think 90 is cool in the summer). I train early in the morning around 5am to beat the heat and I use water bottles that strap around your waist along with taking cash with me to buy more water on the really long runs.

I Love my 4 bottle fuel belt. Didn't think I would like it - in fact, I bought it expecting to give it to my SIL, but LOVE IT!!!! The velcro keeps it snug, but not too tight, and the convenience of having my water and "stuff" in the attached zipper pocket far outweighs any weirdness of having something around my waist....

Hello everyone!

I've just joined this team today and signed up for the Dublin Marathon on 25th October.

I have done 2 marathons previously - Prague in 2007 4h 40
and Loch Ness in 2008 4h 31.

I'd love to break the 4h 30 barrier this year.

About water: it IS a struggle, especially in the summer. My best solution is one of those hand thingies--you put the water bottle in it, so it's in your hand, but there is a sort of belt over your hand so you are not having to grip the bottle. I carry the one bottle and have found a route with a drinking fountain five miles in, so I can drink one bottle going out, fill up, and drink the second coming back.

In the winter, I carry those "Roaring Waters" juice packs (like Capri Suns) in my pockets. They're mostly water with a little sugar and so easy to carry, but you do need a decent-sized pocket to carry it in.

Good luck!

I do my 9 mile tomorrow---I've never run that far! I run with my camelback, but I use Body Glide to prevent chaffing. That seems to help. I also tend to get really dehydrated really fast, so I've been doing my long runs on the treadmill so I have water on hand, and if anything happens, it's somewhat supervised.

Thanks for the advice on the protien Goodmar. You always hear about eating carbs. I have low iron too, so I need to find ways to increase both. I really need to workon increasing my mileage...

Its getting closer ladies! Its exciting that so many of us are running marathons so close to each other... I am only up to a 9 mile run... I need to sign up for some halfs and the 20 miler...

Any tips or advice people have been coming up with? I am really struggling with water. I tried running with my camel back but it rubs my neck raw. I tried running with a fanny pack, but it was too bouncy- rubbed my waist. I cant run with water bottle in my hand... but I need water.

Good luck and keep up the distance!

I am running the Chicago Marathon on 10/10/10. This will be my 5th.

I run by myself or with the running club sponsered by my local running shoe store. That is a great way to connect with local runners and walkers.

I am running my 5th marathon this October (Columbus, Ohio). Unlike others who posted earlier, I spent all of last year injured and recovering (had surgery and everything). Make sure that you give your body adequate recovery time after your long runs - probably only a day off or a day of cross training will be OK. Also make sure that you stretch, hydrate properly and get enough protein. As your mileage goes up, you might find that you crave carbs. But, protein is necessary to rebuild muscles. Have a great time with your training, and you will do well!!!!!

Dinolike--I'll be running the Portland Marathon, too! It'll be my first one, and from everything I've read, it's a GREAT one for first timers (plus, Portland is AWESOME!).

I've read that several of you are doing a marathon in October; how many of y'all are first-timers?

Thanks for the encouragement Monteruby! I will def follow your advice. I have seen too many people over train and get shin splints. awful.

That is great that you collected an informal group to train with Dino. Are they going to do the marathon with you or just help you train. Great goal - that is what I am thinking too!

I was a little worried about getting injured when training for my first distance races, but I did just fine, and have now completed several 5k's, a 10k, a half marathon, and a full marathon. Just take it slow and easy, increase your distances gradually, and you'll do just fine. Good luck!

I am from a small town in Oregon so my running group options are pretty limited. But I have collected an informal group to train with. And I plan to rely heavily on Runners World (mag and site). Hopefully it will be enough...I am not going for any particular time. I would just like to finish strong. Next time I will work on how fast I get to the end...

Thanks for all the encouragement! I registered today! Its official!!!!! I am super excited- if you cant tell by all the exclamation! haha.

I am glad there are other October marathoners on here to talk to. Have you joined any training groups? I am looking at joining one for weekend runs and getting a GPS/HRM- any suggestions?

I am also planning on doing smaller races in between- I think that will keep the excitement going! :D

Thank you again! I am very excited about having such great spark-friends.

Hi!
I'm also doing an October marathon, the Long Beach one on 10/17. I trained for this last year but I injured myself 3 weeks out. I did not follow my training schedule very well and I put on more mileage at the end than my body was ready to handle. This year I'm starting slow, running some smaller races and plan on sticking to my schedule better. Good Luck!

I am training for an October marathon too! The Portland Marathon on October 12. My longest race so far has been a 15k.

I know I tend to short change stretching as I start running more miles so I am working hard to incorporate that in as well. So far it has really seemed to help. Good luck! I am sure you will do great!!!

I also took it nice & easy while training for my first marathon. I did no speed work whatsoever - my focus was totally on adjusting to running the distance. I completed the marathon in pretty good shape & so far, No Injuries!

Slow and steady wins the race. I was also terrified of getting injured while training for my first marathon, so I did what you are doing - gave myself PLENTY of time to build up to the distance, and I am happy to report I arrived rested, uninjured and READY at the starting line!

There are a lot of different plan options out there. Pick one you think will work best for you and don't be afraid to switch it up if need be. You'll be fine! Just go for it!

Don't worry about getting injured! Just stick to your training plan -- within reason, listening to your body for minor adjustments -- and you'll be FINE. Make sure you build your mileage nice and slow. :)

Congratulations, because I know you're going to GO FOR IT!

I am psyching myself up to register for the Twin Cities marathon. It is October 3rd. I will start training for it this weekend!

I am VERY excited to start, but am worried that I will get injured. I know I just need to register and hope for the best. I have been wanting to run a marathon since high school. I graduate from grad school this year and it feels like the time to do it!
