Welcome! You have a tough job. I'm therapist and I've watched what people like you have to do. Its tough. I started out as an elementary teacher right out of college. Loved teaching. Then I went to seminary and was a pastor and while I was a pastor got my counseling degree and now I'm working as a therapist. I just started a job in a new agency that specializes in recovery. I've had some great experiences in all the things I've done along with seeing some pretty tough stuff.

Hello, everyone,

I'm not actually a social worker, counselor, or therapist. I work in CPS. I'm pretty much a jack of all trades: I supervise visits, I transport children and clients, I do administrative work (payments, entering visits, filing, paperwork for adoptions, filing legal documents, etc.), and I assist the caseworkers, investigators, and permanency workers wherever possible.

I am in college, and my major started as social work, but I realized quickly it was not what I was meant to do. While there are plenty of moments that fill my heart, and I will miss what I do when I graduate, my heart breaks a little every day. I still want to work with kids, so my major is now elementary education.

Hi everyone!

My name is Renee. I'm a child/adolescent therapist in community mental health agency who specialises in DBT. I work primarily with clients who self-harm.

I am on this journey to lose about 140 more pounds. This will be the third time I've done SparkPeople. The first time was wildly successful until I got sick. The second time was not as successful and I became frustrated and quit. Third time's a charm??

I'm hoping we can connect and use this group for good. I think it's important for us to celebrate and support our journey together and provide the support for each other and ourselves like we would our clients.

Renee

Hello! emoticon My name is Glenda. I live in beautiful WA. I received my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling last month! emoticon I'm a National Certified Counselor, and will begin working toward getting the hours I need to be a LMHC sometime in the near future. Now that I'm all done with grad school, I've come back to SparkPeople and am looking to reengage. The last time I really took the time and put the work in, I lost 40 pounds and then maintained for more than a year. I've since gained all that (and then a little more!) back over the past almost 2 years. I'm looking forward to getting to know some others out there who tend to give more to others than to themselves, and working on changing that!

Hi Team! My name is Sarah, I am an MSW who moved to England 18 months ago. Prior to the move, I was working f/t + with private practice and completely overloaded. The move here has allowed me to step back from that, however I am having real difficulties getting certified here which limits my income and puts alot of strain on the family finances. The move and stress meant I gained about 20 pounds on top of the 30 I already had been hanging onto since having children. So far, I'm doing pretty well with the spark people program but haven't really found a team. emoticon

Hi all! I'm a child trauma therapist in Massachusetts and a returning member after a several-years-long hiatus from the site. I have gained 60 pounds in 7 years in the field and I'm realizing that my self-care just isn't what it used to be, so I'm seriously re-committing to it and looking forward to feeling supported by other social workers and therapists who hopefully know what I'm talking about! Nice to meet you all.

Hi Everyone!

I'm Laura from Colorado. LPC and LMFT. Currently I'm working in a county jail, but prior to that I worked half-time in private practice and half-time doing psych evals in 4 local emergency departments. I am burning out :( Despite loving the actual work of being with clients in therapy, I've struggled with compassion fatigue like nobody's business. This year I gave up my dream of private practice, which was doing well and growing, because I felt so emotionally drained. I took the job in the jail because I thought it would be "easier..." ha! Anyway, I would really love to connect with other mental health professionals who have struggled with burnout. I really believe it's a major reason for my overeating. Can't wait to get to know all of you!

Hi all! My name is Tiffany and I'm a newly certified LPC (granted licensure 9/20/13). Been working as a community counselor in an outpatient mental health clinic for 6 years. I had a lot of stress getting licensed and now it's just trying to figure out everything I need to do in order to maintain it. My clinical skills are in DBT (I run groups and do individual using the skills) and am now working towards certification in TF-CBT. My first passion has always been kids, trauma is a new field for me to explore, I tended to focus on behavior problems earlier in my career.

I'm a sucker for the drug rep lunches we get and of course all the pot licks we have as a clinic and the sweet treats we bring in for holidays and just because.

Really happy I found this team and I can't wait to get to know all of you :-)

I am a Substance Abuse Counselor and am going to graduate school for Mental Health Counseling. I am excited that there is a team for the helpers! I gained a lot of weight with my current job, stress eating has been my downfall. Sitting all day has definitely not helped. I have made some changes, such as taking a downstairs office and going to Zumba 3 times a week. Glad to be a part of this team!

Hi Susan:
Funny! I am at a VA and specialize in PTSD and learning CPT. Trying to learn overall CBT skills. Maybe it's stress that is holding me back... What ever it is I'm so used to it I can't separate it from my everyday self. I just get home and crash....I don't want to move, talk or think. I am all client contact. How do you refresh yourself from your day?

Hi Team. I just joined this team and just returned to Sparkpeople a week or so ago, hoping to lose weight for health reasons. I have been a social worker for more years than most of you have probably been alive, believe it or not. I received my MSW from UB in 1969. My current position, for the past almost 11 years, is with Hospice Buffalo. I see from reading the posts that I have a local colleague (Jenn) on this team! Best wishes to all, Rose

Hi everyone!

I have a MS in Counseling, and have a private practice as a MFT intern, and work part time for a community college district in california where I do counseling for students with disabilities. I recently went through the stillbirth of my first daughter, and then a non-viable pregnancy right after that. I am on here because I know on an intellectual level there are things I need to do to take care of myself (...things I would suggest my clients do...) but it's harder when it's for yourself, ya know? Anyways, glad to be here.

Good Morning everyone. I have been with SP off and on for awhile and am hopeful that I remain motivated this time. I was a child protective caseworker for 13 years and recently changed jobs. I am now working as an adult protective investigator. The change has been really positive so far and I am trying to make really positive changes in my life. One of the things I missed most about SP was all the support, teams and challenges so I am excited to be back.

Hi everyone. My name is Samantha. I earned my MSW a little over a year ago and am now working as a home-based therapist. I was so excited to find this team because if there's one thing I know about us social workers, we know how to be supportive!! And that's exactly what I need right now. I'm starting (over) on my weight loss journey and I'm trying very hard to meet my goals this time, but I need support along the way. Anything anyone can offer in terms of support or advice would be well received, I promise!

Hi I finished my MSW last August and I am still looking for a job :( I live in West Michigan. I am an emotional eater which is not a good attribute when looking for a career. Hi there.

Saw this team posted at the bottom of the counselors sparkteam.

Interesting that you have a team goal for doing something good for yourself once a day since all of my supervisors (former and present) are constantly on me about self care.

Been an LPC-A since last April and recently renewed my license until 2014.

Firebender, that is the best thing about this site is that you can come here when you have the time or just to need talk, or whenever you need inspiration or motivation, and if you are busy, well, we will still be here when you get back!

I love the nutrition/fitness trackers as they really keep me on track, but the best part about SP are the people! and all the support and encouragement, and even, friendships that I have made here!

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating with my MSW this June, and beginning the search for work that will support my goal of licensure. I am also finishing up an internship where I am providing individual counseling.

I enjoy this site! This is my first purposeful attempt to lose weight both by changing my diet AND maintaining an exercise regimen. I'm a bit concerned about keeping up the momentum, particularly as spring term picks up and graduation draws nearer.

Glad to find this team. :)

Welcome, Addisons-Nana!
You work in a very hard field, but it must be so rewarding when you can help children! This is a great place to come everyday to take care of yourself! There are a lot of teams on SP that are very active and I know for me, they are very therapeutic too! I don't know what I would do without SP and all their great encouragement and support!

Good day everyone,

I am coming to you from Ontario Canada where I work full time for Family and Children's services....I have worked in child welfare for almost 12 years...it is tiring and although extremely rewarding when I am able to faciliate change within a home it has also ,I believe, contributed to my weight gain and unhealthy life choices...after a stressful day I would console myself with food..and the hectic pace of a day left little time for making sure to sit down and eat mindfully....I am changing that though!

I do believe those of us who help others on a constant basis often neglect ourselves and the effects of VT are also evident in my circle of coworkers....I sometimes feel I must get better at practicing what I "preach".....take care of myself first....I am not sure if anyone else here works for the child welfare system....but it seems where I work anyway the " they" don't always encourage self care....so we the frontline workers are left to "do it on our own" which sometimes is hard...when the environment in which we works does not support it 100%...

But no more excuses....I am going to get healthy once and for all!

Looking forward to sharing and learning with you all....

Hi all. I'm just joining this team today after finding spark people last Tuesday. I'm working in our school district doing social work after lots of time away from the field. It's funny how having an MSW can be a curse when you're looking for work after a long absence. I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi everyone!

I'm a music therapist and I work with children and young people who have survived abuse and neglect, and their foster carers. It's stressful but so worth it.

I joined up here again two weeks ago (after a false start over a year ago) and want to learn how to take care of myself as well as I can.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi everybody! I just joined in November and am trying to get back in shape and make my own health a priority again. I'm really looking forward to being able to hike my favorite canyons & mountains again next summer. I work with domestic violence victims at a women's shelter and I love it but it can be really stressful sometimes.

Nice to meet you all, Heather

Hello! I've been on and off with sparkpeople for the past couple of years. My most recent bout has been the past four weeks and it is coming along nicely.

As we all know it is important to take care of ourselves as we help others and that is what I'm doing here at sparkpeople. For me, I have found my obesity has determined my lifestyle and this is no longer acceptable. I am creating the ACTIVE life I want for myself and the side bennies are losing weight and being healthy.

I've been in the social work/counseling field for four years. I'm currently working as a chemical dependency counselor in a non-profit clinic running group and individual therapy sessions. I also have experience working with severely emotionally disturbed mentally ill youth in a community residence. Part of my near future goal is going to graduate school for my msw and applying for my CASAC within the year. I have a BA in Psych, from SUNY University at Buffalo.

I can't wait to begin exploring this group site- I am looking forward to getting to know you!
Debbie

My name is Mary and I am a Licensed Master's Social Worker in Columbia, SC. I work with dual diagnosed adolescents and I have been doing this work for the last 13 years!!! Truly, I love what I do and believe it keeps me young! emoticon

Currently, I am in supervision for my independent license and will finish in 4/11 and then sit for my exam later that year.

Joined this team as we help others and believe that we can help each other reach our goals!

Hi! My name is Manda and I'm new to SP. I will be graduating with my Master's in (Clinical) Psychology next month. I have worked in various jobs in the field and with several populations (adults with dev. disabilities, children and adolescents with various diagnoses, and now adults with D&A addictions). I will be starting a job as a D&A counselor after graduation. While I look forward to it and am confident in my abilities as a counselor, I feel like I need to gain confidence in other areas of my life (body image for example). I also know that there will be stress associated with gaining certifications, testing and exams for licensure, and getting married--all in the next year (added to graduation, starting a career, and buying a house all before the end of July!). I want to be able to handle all of these things in a positive way, starting with getting physically healthy.

Hi...I am new to this team and to SparkPeople. I have been a social worker for more years than I can believe! I earned my MSW at San Diego State University, and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California. All of my work has been primarily with Older Adults. I currently work for a private Geriatric Care Management and home care company...LivHOME. I also worked for the County of San Diego in our Area Agency on Aging (Aging & Independence Services)as a Licensed Mental Health Clinician attached to an Adult Protective Services Unit. The other position in the County was developing, implementing and managing our Intergenerational Program. It was during this time that I discovered my absolute love for Foster youth. I am interested in meeting you...have a great week!

I am fairly new to SP and am working on my Masters in Rehabilitation & Mental Health Counseling. I will graduate in May. I still am unsure where the future will lead as to job possibilities so that makes me cranky but I love the classes (mostly, one right now is making me nuts) and am really enjoying my Internship with MT state Voc Rehab. Ready to be done with school and on to a paying job tho! :) I take my CRC on Friday...

Hey All
I live in NY. I've done preventive to prisons. I now embark on obtaining a CASAC-Certification in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse counseling. Start training 9/9/09. I realized many years ago, helpers usually don't take the time to help themselves. I have no problem asking for the help I need today... emoticon emoticon

Hello all!

I am Heather from Bowling Green, KY. I have been on spark on and off for a few years now. I took a hiatus while I was working at a very stressful job (Family Preservation Program Specialist) and finally had the opportunity to let go of that job. I am currently looking for a new job (am hot on the trail:) and will be staring to work on my MSW next fall!

Hi Everyone!

I just joined this team. I joined SP in May 2009. I have found the site to be wonderful and full of information. I just graduated in May with my Master's of Education in School Counseling. I have been employed as a school counselor in rural Maine at an elementary school since September 2008. I absolutely love it. I have a BS in Social Work.Prior to working at a school I was a case manager at a community mental health agency for 6 years.

I have struggled with my weight for years!! I am really good at helping others and supporting them but it seems when it comes to helping myself I have difficulty. I am hopeful that I am going to be able to do it this time with the support of SP.

Hi Everyone, I'm new here, so just wanted to say hello. I am a therapist in Colorado, doing homebased therapy for individuals, couples and families. This emotional eating thing is definitely magnified for those of us in the "helping professions," I think, so thanks to whomever created this group! :)

Hi I am a Child Mentor and work for a mental health nonprofit.
I have 2 BS in Ed, but not a degree in SW, so I cannot be a case manager.
That is ok tho, because I love my job.
I work 1-on 1 with at risk kids that are receiving therapy and provide tutoring, mentoring and help run social skills building groups with a Children's Case Manager.
Do you think I fit in here?
I did not find another category that was close.

Hi I am Lorin and I'm a Speech Therapist at an urban high school in Northern New Jersey. My job can be very stressful which makes me tired and unmotivated to do exercise when I come home from school. I have trying to keep myself on track with the support of spark groups so I don't eat sugar, carbs etc. I have been drinking 8 glasses of water faithfully also. I joined Spark about a week and a half ago. emoticon

Hi, my name is Hannah, and like a few others on the team, I am also a Child Welfare social worker. I work full time at our county agency, mostly working Family Maintenance cases right now along with an internship in Emergency Response as part of the MSW I'm working on. I've been in this field for not quite two years and want to be healthy to enjoy it (???) until retirement. My major fitness activities are walking emoticon and yoga emoticon . I have a TON of weight to lose, and it seems that the helping professions seem to encourage helping ourselves to the fridge (or the three course "snacks" at unit meetings!). Maybe I need a well-written case plan...

Hi! I am new to SP, so while browsing I came across this team! I am a Social Worker with the state working with with foster children and their families. Child Abuse/Neglect is an epidemic in this country and the daily pressure has taken its toll (or I have let it take its toll) and it time to reclaim some 'me' time. I love my job - it is truly my calling - and I can't imagine doing anything else, but the daily stress x 16 years . . .

Hi, I'm Mary, and I'm the clinical director for a non-profit agency in northern New Mexico. Since I took the position 13 months ago, I have regained much of the weight I lost in '07 due to stress eating. I love my job, but it can be all-consuming. I'm working hard to achieve more balance in my life this year.

Hi!

I have been on Sparkpeople since Nov. 1st, my agency introduced us to it and we had a challenge. I am continuing on and needed to join another team to help me stay motivated. This looks like a good one to join, I know after listening to people all day, I could use some support in my own life!
