Jennifer don't beat yourself up, it doesn't do any good and I've done that for both of us already. I got my diagnosis on November 22, so its been two weeks today. I am learning everything I can about managing this disease. I am still overwhelmed with information, but my goal is health.

This is the link to my web page telling about my first book.

Hi. My name is Jennifer and I am getting my A1C results back this week. I had gestational diabetes a year ago with my daughter, and now I believe I have full blown diabetes. My doc thinks so too. I was borderline before I got pregnant with my daughter. I have a home monitor from my gestational diabetes time, and my fasting sugars are always high. Like around 180. My dad has suffered with this for decades and I am really worried. I am very upset that I waited this long to do anything about it. Life just kept getting in the way.

I hope to be really active on this team. Good luck everybody!

Hi,

I was diagnosed a few months ago. I followed the food plan for about 2 weeks and lost some weight off of that but then went back to my bad ways. I'm here now to try to restart that meal plan and eventually add some exercise to that too. Hopefully I will be able to manage this thing and get my glucose back to normal levels.

Hello: My name is Jo but most everyone calls me Ladybug. I was diagnosed with borderline diabetes two weeks ago. It really wasn't a surprise to me, my mom had type 2 and we think my brother has it too. although he hasn't been tested for it (I think).

The few people and things I have read, borderline is now called pre-diabetes, either way I have it. So now, I will meeting with a nutritionist to work out a good meal plan that will help me. My doctor also said this will help me lose the much needed weight that needs to come off. My cholesterol was also very high and he hopes that will come down too.

I hope to get to know some of you and we can exchange ideas, recipes etc.

Have a wonderful day

Our Parish has a collection bin for cancy left over from halloween. A lady who has ties to the poorist of the poor makes sure that the candy is a special treat for children who may not otherwise ever get to taste such delights. If it were not for this, I would probable eat every leftover piece in the spirit of not wasting food. (HA-HA)

Hi KSTEVENS140, welcome to our group. Please don't let that feeling of failure surface again. Sometimes, through no fault of our own, things like this happen to us. From experience I am learning it is trial and error finding what works but you will be getting help from everyone on Sparks. I am still learning and asking questions. Glad you had some counseling I think that is a great way to start.

LADYBUGVIV, I'll try to find that book you mentioned. I try to read as much as I can.

I was given a book by Gretchen Becker Titled Type II Diabetes, the First Year. Chapter 1 is called "It is not our fault." I suggest that everyone read it if you can. Please visit my Page and read my story! emoticon viv

I've been pre diabteic for 5 years. I was doing really well I exercised, and ate better then I ever have in my life. But that doesn't make everything better liked I hoped it would. As of 2 weeks ago I was put on insulin. At first I didn't want to tell anyone I felt like a failure. But then my brain came back to visit and I realized that I have fought a good fight, and I can continue to fight. I went and saw a diabetic counselor this past week and that helped also. So here I am trying to get my blood sugar under control. Here's to starting a new phase of life.

Good for you getting to those classes. I hope they were helpful. Some here have had them and others have not. Who know having diabetes would help your math ability. Reading labels has become a full time job it seems sometimes! All that hidden sugar in things is just crazy!

Hi I am a new diabetic I was diagnoised in August. I had the classes and take my Metformin. The carbs they gave me was 3-4 per meal and that is 15 grams = 1 carb. Which has done wonders for my math ability as I am reading all packages and figuring the carb counts. I get 1 carb for a snack, I am not a snacker but found out if I don't have a snack I am reading on the low side. I hope to learn to control my readings and lose some weight besides. Nice to meet all see ya soon. Oh I am a late night person so I am usually on late at night.

Welcome back to Sparks. We all need a break now and then. Congratulations on doing well so far. I am glad you have been successful with diet and exercise.
I was on medication but now am trying to deal with it the same as you.

Was Missamel on here before, had to take a break, but now I'm back.

This is me:
Just joined yesterday. I'm a 30 year old female from Houston. I have been big all my life and that has finally caught up to me, as I was diagnosed with diabetes in december. I am not currently on any medications and am trying (so far successfully) to beat this through diet and exercise.

I was doing really well until a recent move threw me off track. I am so far down 62 pounds from a starting wieght of 283. My doctors wants me down to 150, I would be happy with 180, since I don't think I've weighed that since middle school.

I live with my 5 year old daughter, and my significant other (I hate the term boyfriend). He is working with me on this, but since his isn't a health issue yet, he is not as devoted as I am trying to be.

I work in the mental health field and will hopefully go back to school soon for my LPC.

Don't be offended by my frank analysis,

Think of it as personality dialysis

Steven!

I know the feeling of getting hit by a ton of bricks when you first find out. I only found out for sure about a month before you.

What I am finding that helps me is to look at your situation not as a negative but as a positive step towards being the healthiest you possible. Or in my case it was the kick in the pants I needed! Just know that you are not alone and feel free to contact me if you want a friend who is more than willing to listen and share information with.

Hi all! I might have actually joined this group a year ago when I was truly 'newly diagnosed' - but since then I chose to bury my head in the sand and ignore the cold, hard facts. I turned 40 yesterday and decided it's time to take care of myself before my children have to take care of me!

I dug out my testing kit and meds - of course they are all expired now so it looks like I'm going to have to be all grown up about it and set up an appt with my dr. I've been reading about the lack of medical support and have found the same to be true. Basically my dr told me to get on her diet plan (which inludes no potatoes or pastas EVER and weekly vitamin injections) or go on South Beach. And that was all she had to say on the topic. My next appt will be with a different dr and I'm also hoping to get referred to a local diabetes class or at least get a little more information about what I'm supposed to be doing.

For now, I will make a few dietary adjustment, start counting carbs so I at least know where I'm at and begin daily exercise.

I just found out Friday (September 30, 2010) that I am diabetic. It hit me like a ton of bricks but I am determined not to let it get the best of me.

I found SparkPeople while looking for applications for the BlackBerry to help me track my blood sugar and other stats. Looking forward to using the tools and the community and help control my diabetes so it doesn't control me.

Hi LadybugViV, Sorry you are "official". But it seems to be something of an epidemic now doesn't it. I am sorry your medication is making you feel sick. I know most of us have some weight to lose, but not that way!

Welcome to the team. We are trying to "revive the chat" so maybe you will come visit us there.

At the end of August my doctor told me that it was now official. I have been borderline for years with my A1c hovering between 6.1 and 6.9. I hit 7.1 and suddenly everything is different. I was started on Medforim (?) and over the past three weeks have gotten sicker and sicker. Did not feel sick with this disease until I was put on medication for it. "Bummer". Only good thing is that I have lost 8-10 pounds because I have been too nauseous to eat!

New to this team but not to spark people. I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few days ago. Rather upsetting, that. Tomorrow I'm going to the outreach clinic for new diabetics locally for an intake interview, and an assessment, and private diet counseling after which I'll attend a total of 9 hours of classes (evenings0 to teach me how to manage my disorder. I was favorably impressed by the support and education set up in our town. My Dr. wants me to lose 15 lbs, increase my exercise, and manage the disease with diet.

Hey there!! I just got the call and blood work back. You have diabetes. No medications yet. The doctor thinks that I am managing my diabetes well with diet but he wants me to exercise and lose some weight. I go back in December to see if there is any improvement. There needs to be improvement. I joined SP back in 2009 but hadn't really taken an ACTIVE role on the site. That all changed this past weekend. This is all new to me, so I am open to suggestions and looking for support. Hope to see you all around. Take care.

Hi, I joined some time ago, but never really got into the site at all. I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes (July 22, 2010) and obviously need to get control of my lifestyle. It helps me obtain goals if I write things down. I was successful on Weight Watchers as long as I was recording points everyday. I need to lose about 100 lbs and have a good start of about 16 lbs. I look forward to getting inspiration from others and staying educated about my newly acquired disease. No one in my family has ever had diabetes. Taken totally by surprise here.

Hi, I am Stacey,
I joined spark back in 2009 but, life got very hectic. I have a daughter with some serious emotional issues that needed my attention and until she was OK. I couldn't think of myself. I weighed 295 in May 2009.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes April 2010 at 270 lbs. The diagnosis was a wake up call. My doctor is great. He is very positive and supportive. He put me on some oral meds and said that when I get under 200lbs I will be off meds. As of today I am down to 236 lbs. So, just 36 lbs to go! I'm excited to be just about 1/2 way to this goal.

I'm trying to focus on my short term goal of losing 10lbs a month and reaching 200lbs rather than trying to lose 110 lbs which seemed pretty impossible a few months ago.

But, each 10lbs is attainable. emoticon

Hi everyone,
I am new to this whole thing too. I am a 52 year old mother of two. My weight has been an up and down issue for me... just thought it would be ok.... Dr. wanted to put me on medication for type 2... I asked her to give me one month to get the weight off and the exercising up.. the month started yesterday... I signed up here to get a meal plan so I would know what to eat. However, my Nutrition page does not have a meal plan button. I am assuming it is because of the Diabetic designation. Is anyone else having this challenge? Does anyone have some diabetic meal plans that they could send me... or that I could import? Really confused... please help.

Hi - I started SparkPeople on 5/25/10 and had lost 22 pounds doing the South Beach diet when BAM, I'm in the hospital for a week diagnosed with diabetes. I'm just back to work this week and still getting use to everything. I give myself 4 insulin shots a day. I see the endocrinologist for the first time this Friday. So, I'm very, very new at this. I'm finally under 300 pounds but gained 5 pounds back due to the fluids they pumped in me. I'm not suppose to be looking at the scale the doctor said...he only wants me worrying about getting the blood sugar under control first...but I couldn't help it and got on the scale this week and was glad to see I'm still under 300 pounds. I'm glad I found a Spark Team to join.

WOW sounds like this team is the one I need so we can lrean together. My fasting # was 6.5 over all 198 but I have no idea what any of that means. I also have very high BP although last visit it was great 110/70 and weight was down 15 pounds. But Kidney fuctions way down for 3rd time in a year so seeing a Kidney DR in August. I am so lost watch this and that and the other thing til I feel like I am going in circles. Questions I have started a list for next visit #1 one thing I have to get on top of is soduim BUT how much is alright? #2 is fat OK think I got that one under control but alot of low fat are high in soduim what to do!! #3 weight get it off well if that was so darn easy it would be done as I have fought it all my adult life and I am 60 so that has been a while! Water water and more water been trying for 90oz a day but what counts a water I understand caffine doesn't but what about things you can put in water like crsystal light? So many things I am so lost and so scared that if I don't figuire it out I will be in bad shape or dead! SO Looked for a team who might be in same boat I am and this is what I found. Wow, I wish I had found this team a couple of months ago when I checked out the diabetes teams. Awesome. Type 2 diagnosis in the spring with first A1c of 10. Metformin and glimiperide for the first two months, then just metformin. Lots of exercise and food changes. Just got my second A1c, down to 6.6 and down a little over 30 pounds lighter with 15 to go.

more- There are no diabetics in my family on either side. My second child, 23 years ago, was just under 11 pounds- gestational that went undiagnosed because I didn't have health insurance? I was told I was prediabetic a few years ago but not given any info that would encourage change. My first finger stick, nonfasting, was 408. I have health insurance and an awesome family doc and great endocrinologist now but will probably lose the insurance soon, a trade off for stress reduction in my life, so I am trying to get as good a grip on self-management as I can as quickly as possible.

Hello- My name is Amber, I was recently Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes a couple of weeks ago. So far my BS is staying low 300's to High 200's which is freaking everyone out. I was put on Metformin and am noticing each week that my BS are lowering The last couple days its been mid to low 200's with a couple spikes to 3. Doc says not to worry yet, as it takes about a month for metformin to do its thing. I just hope it starts working soon! Watching what im eating trying to go for different meals. My biggest fight is some days I just dont feel like cooking and want an easy meal. I walk almost every day with my dog. And I think I am going to start doing turbo jam again. I suppose this is a bit of a book. Anyways Hi, theres my story. And look forward to talking with you all !

Hi Team,
I am Wendy from Edmonton, Alberta. Just got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which has grounded me from my job as a pilot. I'm trying to sort through the information available and get through all the testing so I can get stablized and back in the air. I look forward to feeling better, learning lots, and meeting all of you.

Hi everyone - I just came across this forum and thought I would introduce myself also. I'm Holly, was just diagnosed with Type 2 last week and I haven't told hardly anyone yet. I always figured I was at risk, since my Dad has it and it runs on his side of the family, but I was surprised that it happened this early. I know I didn't do myself any favors with the lifestyle I've lived until recently either. Trying to turn all of that around the last few months already, but now I really need to step it up.

Anyways, I will read more of your posts and try to get involved, I just wanted to post something to start out.

I will say this - it will be SO great to talk to other people in my shoes. I haven't been able to tell more than one friend so far and it feels rather isolating.

Thanks for letting me ramble. :-)

I totally know what you mean about the emotional eating and getting the diagnosis was a huge wake up call. Stick to it. You are worth all the effort. We can manage this thing day by day!

Hey everyone! I am 41 and I was diagnosed with Type II about 45 days ago. I spent the last 45 days working on learning about food, eating better and adding (ick) exercise. I still struggle but I have not had a starch in so long I think I have forgotten how they taste. I gave up my favorite vice of all time "Slurpees" and I am trying to right by my poor little abused body.

I have a doctor who wants my fasting blood level consistently at or below 100 and I am struggling with that. Today I woke up and it was 104 and I felt like a huge failure. I keep getting inconsistent messages between the doc, the dietician and things I read so I am confused but still willing to try and figure all this out. I hope you all will be patient with what I imagine will be many many questions. :)

Thanks, and blessings to each of you!

Hi, I'm Lorrie, and the doctor just called with my diagnosis of diabetes2. I've been expecting it, but I've been able to dodge the bullet so far, until now. What's frustrating is that I've been faithful in taking my other meds and dieting since my last bloodwork, and even though my total cholesterol numbers came back good, my triglycerides were still elevated and my blood sugar was elevated. Then they ran and a1c, and my three month average was 143. I don't want to have to stick myself daily, but like somebody else said, I have no choice. I'll go see the doctor again on Monday. My husband has it too, so I know some things about it already. Anyway, here we all are to support one another.

Hello all! I'm Kristin, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last week. Although it was not a complete and total shock since diabetes runs in my family, I've been working on eating healthy and working out and did not expect it at such an early age (I'm 29). So now I'm learning a whole new way of eating, testing my blood sugar daily, taking metformin 2x day and increasing my workouts. It's overwhelming, but I have no choice but to be up to the challenge!

Hey there...my name is Mell and I was diagnosed last Friday with Diabetes. I had no real warning signs...I had stopped drinking Diet Coke last November and been drinking pretty much water since...so I figured the frequent bathroom visits were because of my increase in water. A few weeks ago I went in for my yearly and mentioned the frequency so she ordered a urine test...and said I was spilling sugars...Then I went in for the glucose test and after fasting I was still spilling sugar and my blood glucose was in the 300's, so they canceled the test and did the a1c test...which was 12.something showing my average at about 355 over the last three months. TOTALLY a shock for me. I am reading up and praying that I get in with the Endocrinologist very soon. The doctor was very positive and said after losing nearly 40 pounds she doesn't think this will be a huge deal for me...but after doing some research I have myself a little bit worked up. I see this as a blessing as I have been plateauing and it will hopefully be the kick in the rear I need to lose again. I am searching for GOOD information, things like how to manage my diet and such...so if you have any links or anything like that...please feel free to pass it on. Thanks

Hello all, I have just been diagnoses with Type II Diabetes this month and have started on Metformin twice daily. I am learning how to eat the right foods and trying to get some excercise in. This diagnosis has really scared me. I am taking some diabetic nutrition classes to get better educated on the types of foods I can eat. I am an emotional eater so learning to cut back is difficult, but now I have no choice.

Good Morning! Well I was diagnoised with type 2 back in Feb.2010. What a shocker huh? I had run some blood sugars that were elevated but it was still the realization of getting the actual diagnoises that suprised me. The blood sugars still weren't that high as far as I thought but numbers are numbers. lol
My Doc put me on medeformin(?) as I was also having the dips with the highs. The meds are working good.
I still have problems with my eating but am now working on that! I also have many other health conditions, but this is the newest.
Looking forward to meeting new people!

Hi I too was just told I and type 2 diabetic at this point my dr wants me to try diet and excersice so I have 3 months to really work on this or go on metphonin(not sure about spelling) my a1c was 6.8 and my blood sugar was 129 So I have joined a gym and go 3 days for strenght training and 2 days cardio I work out between 30-45 min which is very hard I am 52 with osteo arth. in my left knee and overweight and asmha I am on my second week at the gym the first week I was sure I would die. I really want to do good with my diet and excersise but it is a big change and alot to learn very overwelleming. I get discouraged very easily like this past week I thought for sure I would have lost 5-6 lbs but when I weighed myself (do every Sunday) I only lost 1.7 lbs I know the changes I am making have to be life changes forever and I am worried I won't be able to do this emoticon

Hi I was just diagnosed today that I am diabetic. Not sure what that all entails but I must be positive and get as much education about this. I can use any help and direction anyone wants to offer.
Hmmm,,,Where to start ????
