I ditto what Morti says. It works. When the low fat diet came out, I ballooned. It took my sister to point out what triggered my weight gain. (menopause had a lot to do with it, too) Carb is a 4-letter work with me;)

I'm a retired R.N. and even did some diet counseling too. As we both know there are a lot of really obese nurses so knowledge of healthy eating doesn't always translate to healthy eating. LOL. In other words no one is perfect and we are all human and you have nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, I love meeting a down-to-earth, sensible, intelligent dietitian, which you obviously are. No offense but it seems to be lacking sometimes in your field. I've met too many dietitians who went to school in the 70s and their education never went beyond that. I've encountered many who state that South Beach is a fad diet as well as Atkin's. Poor old Dr. Atkin's was treated like a kook for many years and now most scientific evidence is proving him to be the enlightened one. I was one who bad mouthed him years ago and have since eaten my crow. LOL. My sparkpage is testament to the fact that diets like South Beach are life savers for many people with certain medical problems. Going lower carb is probably the best thing you will ever do for yourself. I blossomed into a blimp and almost died on the traditional diet that most M.D.s and dietitians are pushing. I would suggest due to your cancer that you keep your South Beach plan as clean as possible and go easy on processed foods but I'm sure I'm already singing to the choir. Those 4 1/2 cups of veggies, beans, low fat dairy, healthy fats, and healthy proteins are just what you need right now. A survivor like you needs high octane fuel to get back to full speed. You will be there in no time with the Beach.

Welcome to the team and good luck with your goals. Menopause is a hard time to lose weight. I've had problems since. My weight is very unstable, and so is my calorie intake. It's even harder with meds. I weighed this am and lost. I started SB Phase 1 yesterday. I know it works and it's easier than most, because after a few days cravings go away. It's true, the less junk you eat, the less you want. That's why I love SB.

Lots of my family members are diabetic. It's better for me to stay away from quick carbs and this team helps me.

Welcome, Dee! There are a few members here struggling with insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. You should find that the South Beach way of eating works for this. When my hubby was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago, his dietitian told him to eat my food. I hope you'll contribute some of your knowledge to the team, too. Join us on the New Year Challenge.

emoticon to the team! I think you will find SB a very well rounded lifestyle way of eating (once you get thru the phase 1). Join us on the challenge thread since many of us are starting (restarting) tomorrow!

Hi there ~ my hubby and I are going to be trying the south beach diet.

I am a registered dietitian and I actually specialize in weight management - which is a bit embarassing since I am really struggling with my weight right now since I was diagnosed with breast cancer in april. I was fortunate since I caught it at stage I and it had not spread. Still, I had to have a double mastectomy and four rounds of chemo. My last chemo treatment was 9/7 ... I am taking tamoxifen and really having a hard time losing. I've been staying within my SP calorie range and working out 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day for at least 5 or 6 days a week and in one and a half months I only lost 3 pounds!!

In doing some research I've learned that being in early menopause because of the tamoxifen that I may be insulin resistant and it is suggested that I consume a low carb diet - so that is why I am going to try south beach.

It is not enough to simply show up. You need to step up for results.... keep on stepping! Dee
