Remember: At this point diet is way, way, way, way, way more important in your weight loss battle than exercise. Having said that, kudos to you for realizing exercise is a part of the equation and being willing to incorporate it.

First of all, if you have not already, check with your doctor before you undertake anything new. I know this is an oft-said rule of thumb, but it's a good one: At higher weights there are often skeletal issues and other things going on that people are not aware of and should be taken into account to ensure safety and being able to not only keep it up, but improve.

When you get the clear from your MD, I highly advise that you start very slow and with little/no weights for your lifting moves. I mean no insult whatsoever, and please don't take what it as such, but it is wise for you to remember that your body is a weight in and of itself, so doing body-weight only moves at this point could very well be sufficient to get you started with muscle gain. As time goes on and you find the moves easier, it's time to slowly raise the weight. And as you lose weight you will also need to add weight to what you are currently doing to help make up the difference. :-)

You have GREAT things ahead! I'm so excited for you and to hear about the marvelous changes you are about to witness in your own body! :-D

Hey everyone!

So I have been on Spark for a little over a year and have some success and some failures. Unfortunately I am back to square one at a lofty 305 pounds.

Le sigh.

I want to start getting in gear and really getting into fitness and building muscle. I do cardio every now and then - and I love to weight lift but I don't know what types or how many or any of that.

I am into roller derby and I have recently started swing dancing - but I know I need more!

Please help!
