New here and trying to retrain myself to find other alternative.

Setting healthy habits really helps. For the past month, I take 6 gulp of water instead of food and sometimes suck on an ice cube. May sound silly but whatever works, right? emoticon

Hello, my name is Teri. I am hoping to learn more about my emotional eating and how to control it by interacting with some of you! My issues stem from living in an abusive household as a teen...I turned to food to stuff down the stress, fear and anxiety and though I am now 57, it still haunts me and with any stress to this day, I still turn to food to 'fix' it. I need to figure out why I haven't been able to overcome this but will never give up. Nice meeting you " )

Hello - I've made great progress in my weight-loss/eating stabilization journey. I feel pretty confident that I have strategies for dealing with many challenges - like planning for trips, for holidays, other special occasions, etc. My biggest problem right now is that every time I start getting near my goal, I sabotage myself. So, I'm looking forward to being part of a community where I can keep on reflecting and strategizing.

And on a related issue - which may or may not be part of this team's discussion - is how to deal with hunger. Up until about 5 years ago, I lived my life with a cycle of binging and starving. I am definitely over the most extreme aspects of this, but I feel like there is something way off in how I respond to hunger. Maybe someone has advice about where to go for help about this, too!

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

New to the team. Struggling every day to make weight loss happen and to get back to healthy place again. Lost 30 lbs last year and have gained it all back plus even more. I’d like to just get on the right path again but struggle with depression, anxiety, social isolation and low self esteem. I do ok for couple days then I seem to fall apart. I just wished this was easier. All I can do is keep living and trying, one day at a time. I want to lose 60 lbs but struggle just to lose 1 lb. I go right back to starting point. I feel like I stuff food down to comfort myself and then I end up feeling even worse. I have bad eating habits but I think it’s mainly because where I’m at emotionally in my life. Had two miserable toxic relationships that I thankfully ended and was emotionally abused, I have ptsd and many other mental things going on. But I am a strong person I just need to stop making excuses and complaining about my weight and how I look and feel and do something about it. But it’s easier said then done sometimes. I live alone with my dog and sometimes I just isolate because It’s where I feel safe and comfortable. If I can only just make healthier choices with food and get back into exercise. I did take my dog on a walk to park yesterday. One challenge is finding enough time. Hoping to get encouragement and support here.

I stumbled on this team somehow, but glad I did!

I am a woman in my very late 60's. I joined Sparkpeople in the spring of 2012. It's one of the best things that has ever happened to me. It's taken me years, but I'm finally ten pounds away from my ultimate goal weight. I'm in the process of building up more muscle mass and strength.

A little history about me. I was always a high energy skinny mini type of person. That all changed twenty years ago when I developed back issues and severe pain. I became sedentary and food was my pain killer. It didn't take long before obesity set in. It only made everything worse. I feared the mirror and wore frumpy clothes. My self-esteem was shot and I became self-loathing. My life turned into a vicious cycle of pain-eating-pounds-depression-pain-eating-
pounds-depression-pain-eating and eating...

Thank the Lord for Chris Downey and his brainchild, Sparkpeople. I believe this man is not just a creative genius, but a genius with a heart! I don't know what I would have done without his Sparkpeople, I don't know what I would have done without all of you!

I still have pain, although it's tolerable. And I don't obsess about food anymore. Instead, I spend time with my family, exercise, swim, teach swimming, practice Tai Chi, walk, hike, sketch, and wiggle my hips at Zumba and more. I really don't have much time to think about pain or eating anymore.

Life is lots better.

Today, I'm in emotional maintenance mode just like when I lose the last ten pounds and go into weight maintenance mode. What I learned from SP is, there is no food diet and there is no emotional diet. There is no diet, period! It's all about living healthy. Better thinking, good self-care, healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle equal a better life. I sort of like it that way.

So, here I am. I hope to share a bit of myself and try to lend a hand to you' all on your path to wherever it is you want to go.

I finally figured out how to see this group & the postings so I can introduce myself! (hint: it's not on the app!)
I've been struggling with emotional eating and overeating since I quit drinking in 2002. I got to my heaviest when working at a state desk job in 2004-2008. I used SP then to help me lose the weight and then in 2015-2016 I went through what I call my midlife crisis + menopause (early.) I am about 10# away from my heaviest weight so I'm taking steps now to prevent it from getting there. I now work in mental health, which is a hotbed for emotional eating. That along with chronic pain and fatigue make eating well and exercising regularly a bit more difficult than it used to be for me. I'm happy to be part of this group and look forward to mutually supporting each other!

Hi! I'm Rachel. I've been on Spark before, but had totally fallen off the wagon. I'm glad to be back! I'm getting married in a couple weeks and I'm trying to get healthy before trying to have a baby. This is the biggest motivator a person can have, but I struggle with emotional eating. It's seriously an addiction!

Hi Everyone,
I just happened to run across this team and it looks like a very supportive and helpful group. I have recently started checking into Spark People again after being away for a period of time after my husband passed away.

Last week I got news that my cholesterol is too high and just started taking a statin to see if I can get it down plus diet and exercise. Luckily I love walking so I know I can always do that and also hoping to add more exercise to the mix.

Hi, I use to be a member of this team a long while back. I recently came back to sparkpeople and am really making an effort. My A1C was way to high and when the Dr added another med to the one I was already taking, it was my eye opener. I'm an emotional eater and evening and nights have always been my problem. I recently started intermediate fasting 16/8. It has been helping me to tell myself I can't eat after 8pm. I still have the cravings sometimes and really have to tell myself no, I can't have it. It would be great to be able to talk to others who are battling emotional eating. I want to be encouraging to others and be encouraged.

JMBOX1, I crave the BBQ crisps and onion dip. Now I normally buy the ones I don't like as in more like cardboard and the dip as in that jar stuff which isn't fit for my tastebuds. I feel it's like the only way I can get away from eating them. If it's the nasty stuff, my munch attack doesn't last long. I even tried the KALE CRISPS! (you're better off eating raw kale truthfully) I know better than to go for the crackers because they tell me to eat more. I just can't stop so I don't buy them. A number of times I've used just plain low-fat sour cream. The thing is I don't need to be eating those things at all.

ELFISHER56 - Lately I have been addressing my emotional eating too. Just this morning I had that bottomless pit feeling even after eating my full breakfast and still wanting more of anything. Fortunately, I avoided a binge. Are you wanting very specific crips/dips? I include chips, crackers and dips in my snack plan and found ones that do satisfy my desire. I try to buy calorie or fat reduced dips or make them and have them on hand. I found completely eliminating them was torture so I include controlled portions in my daily meal plan and do not feel deprived. I wish you the best.

I have limited mobility due to injuries that won't heal. I can relate to having my go-to exercises for my emotional well-being become non-options.
What kind of physical limitations do you have? Can you do yoga? Or maybe shadowboxing? You can do either one from a seated position.

STARDUSTD, I walk every day. I am limited due to problems with the hip and back. The PT told me to walk for a while and then go into strength training. That strength training starts the second week of June and I'm to move slow and steady until I build up muscle again. Before I became disabled I'd go for power walks if I needed to work on extreme anxiety. That worked, but that was then and I'm nowhere ready to start that again.

Hi ELFISHER. I have anxiety and PTSD too. It's really tough when those strong feelings hit. Do you exercise at all? Cardio helps calm me down when I have excessive nervous energy. Deep breathing also helps -- sometimes -- with anxiety.

Hi Everyone. I've got a problem with emotional eating. I've had PTSD for 25 years now. Since I began with SPARKPEOPLE back in March, I am losing weight. This is good. It's not too much weight at a time, just a couple of pounds a week. Right on course at the moment. The problem is when I get really bad anxiety from out of nowhere (no visible reason), my body wants crisps and dip. I don't go and buy it so I end up with anxiety all day and all night. Although I do keep water and fresh fruit around to ward off any of these type of attacks, sadly it doesn't seem to help. I go for walks and try to walk it off --doesn't work. I use music to distract myself and that just tends to make me manic. I am at a loss and I'm still wanting the crisps and dip. Are there any thoughts on how I might overcome this situation.

I don’t want to be too negative for my first introduction but I need help!
I’m the heaviest I have ever been at 11stone 5 (159lbs) at the age of 28.
I’m an emotional eater and I’m struggling!
I eat really healthy for 2days and then I can eat 2 bags of chocolate in one go. I feel so guilty that I can continuously eat chocolate.
I try to eat mostly a vegan diet but the chocolate is a problem.
I want to lose a decent amount of weight and get fitter for my holiday in June.

I'm new in that shortly after joining this team I kind of faded away from spark. But I'm back and doing well! I feel so much better than I was before. Before I felt like I was punishing myself, telling myself I could never eat foods I love because they make me fat. Instead of finding a balance I was going all or nothing. It is so much nicer to just eat less, and plan treats instead of banning myself from ever eating them. I'm enjoying it so far.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the team! I did SP about 10years ago and then got injured and tried WeightWatchers. Well, I'm back to SP, and I've figured out that I was missing the community aspect of getting healthy! So, here I am!

Hi everyone.

My name is Jessica. I have been close to my current weight for over 12 years now. I really am trying to get some weight off before it starts affecting my overall health. I have a lot of support at home, but tons of stress at work and severe depression. When I feel particularly low I struggle with not overeating at dinner time and on weekends. Basically any time I'm at home I want to eat nonstop, because no one judges me there and I haven't found anything else that's as effective at making me feel a little better. I want support from others and want to support others also. I'm hoping we can work on our accountability and strategies together.

I have been on sparkpeople for over a year now. This is my 1st time on this team. I realize I have an issue with being an emotional eater and boredom eating too. I had finally broke the 200 barrier a few months back and over this past month have gained 10 pounds back and am back up over the 200 mark. So disappointed in myself that I gave in to eating this way! I was doing so well and am feeling so frustrated with myself. I know tomorrow is the beginning of a new year and hoping to get this under control.

Hi everyone! I am a "lifetime emotional eater" so my bad habits have had a lot of time to etch themselves into my psyche. As I get older I have to work so much harder to get to and then maintain a healthy weight range. The start of a new year seems to be a good time for me to join but it will be a VERY hard job for me to work on curbing my emotional eating. I hope you all are looking forward to 2019. Mine already promises to be a year of family challenges but at least I have time to do some reflecting and planning ahead of things.

SP helped me lose nearly 100 pounds a few years ago. My food obsession and emotional eating is getting me in trouble. I need to find diet buddies and get back on track.

He longed to become Real, to know what it felt like; and yet the idea of growing shabby and losing his eyes and whiskers was rather sad. He wished that he could become it without these.

Not new, but haven't been back for several years. I am super duper depressed sometimes and I over eat. I turned fifty-one December 12th of this year. Don't know how to overcome myself and my over eating. I do work full time at a grocery store and it does help with distraction. So here I am to get some support.

Hi there, l to am an emotional eater! Although l exercise regularly, Over the last 2 years 10 pounds have slowly crepted back on..
l have heard that once you reach 60 it’s a lot harder to take it off and l am finding that to be true! I seem to reach for food whatever my mood, l guess-typically more so when l’m stressed over something or bored! Anyways l am glad l found this site.

Hi!

I lost a bunch of weight with the help of SP but I am absolutely still an emotional eater. I just moved and gained 10 pounds like it was nothing! Not a good way to manage stress! Glad to be a member of this team and am looking forward to losing my moving weight!!!!!

Starting a new day - yes, still on the couch; don't go into work until 12:30 today. But, getting organized and setting goals for today and this week. First goal achieved - logged into SP. Have tracked my breakfast and pre-tracking for the rest of the day.

Hello,
Its about a month Ive returned to SP and I notice Im struggling with emotional eating. I eat when Im bored, sad, anxious and my behaviour makes it difficult to follow the healthy lifestyle Id like to have and to lose weight.

I just got 100 days of weight loss and I hope I will find it an enlightining reading, because so far I have no idea what to do with emotional eating.

New to this group. It's been a very difficult couple of years mentally and the pounds have been creeping steady on. Trying to take back control of my eating. Need to find new outlets for my stress and anxiety. Just going to stay motivated and run as much as I can :)

Hi everyone!

I am an emotional eater. I eat when I am sad, happy, bored... Any time is always a good time to eat. I suffered from bulimia in the past and had huge binges when coming out of recovery. I am slowly finding my way to "normal" servings again, but I still turn to food whenever I have strong emotions, positive or negative ones.

I am a big emotional eater. I will go an buy a large cake and eat all the frosting off it in one sitting. I will actually plan on what I am going to eat. Then I will punish myself by running 5 miles to work off the calories. I've been told I have an eating disorder and I believe they are right.

I am 39 and live near Wichita, KS and the mother of a 5 year old. I've been married to my husband 8 years and he works 3-3 so he offers no help in raising our son. Now that he is in kindergarten I have more time.

When you want to succeed as much as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.

Its nice to meet you in this group MOMMAJACK1. I am still fairly new here but it is already helping to be here and on this group along with the new friends. I did start walking without my cane the last 3 days and started going out in the morning for a very, very slow 2 mile walk. It has been painful but helped, especially with the binge and stress eating. Starting to even meet some support in my neighborhood from new people I am meeting with my walk (we relocated here early this past year). I think you can do great here with the support of the great family you have emoticon

Hello I have been on and off Sparkpeople for to many years to count. I am a binge eater and an emotional eater. I take meds for depression and anxiety also an appetite suppresent. I have a very supportive husband of 20 years and 2 beautiful boys. I guess with raising a family I have kind of lost myself. I no longer know who I am without being a mom or wife. Looking for like minded people to help each other.

New to Sp. I am 300 lbs and have an addiction. I have also only just begin to supplement with OA each week but need to follow a diet plan. I fit this category but trying to control. My worst times are now at around 11 pm, the couple hours before and up to midnight as my husband and son work together up until midnight and i wait for them. My main goal is to learn to control my addiction and save my life as my health is gone so badly in the last few years. I am not yet 50 and getting a bit anxious how many years can be left. The pain is much worse and it shocks me how slow and sluggish with poor breathing it has become when I was fairly fit just some years ago. This is really a must.

Hi! My name is Karen. I have been on Spark for 1 1/2 years. I just realized I am eating out of boredom. I have reached my goal weight and I am trying to live a healthy and fit lifestyle. I am retired and noticed when I am not at an exercise class or helping others, I am eating more. So far, it seems to be mostly fruits and veggies but today was a loaf cake.

I guess this is a never ending learning experience that we are on.

Hi,

My name is Cindy. I have a lot of weight to lose. I as so aware it is emotional eating. Bored or just cravings, depressed or anxious. It's all there, I don't deny it. Have reached a point that I feel surgery is my only option. So I am gonna give this a try, I'm at the highest weight I've ever been and almost screamed in shock when I saw the scale said 260. I'm 10 over what I said I'd NEVER let myself get to. Wish me luck.

hello everyone my name is Judy I am 67 retired. Since I have retired I have felt not needed for the longest of time. I had an accident & almost lost my hand that caused early retirement I worked in a pharmacy for 27 years so I needed my hand to type in prescriptions..
I was told I would never use my hand again from the therapy department & my 2 surgeons.
I joined the YMCA swam for a year every day & have the use of my hand . The only problem is it feels real tight like it is in a vice I can handle that as many of our soldiers came home with no limbs . I put on 38 pounds before & after the accident.
My over eating was out of boredom & the feeling of depression as I was not working ,severe insomnia.
I have since in the last 2 weeks getting around 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night due to a medication my Docootr put me on to sleep It is not specifically a sleep aid It is used for anxiety,but with some people it helps them sleep .
He wants me on it for 90 days .This has helped my not eating around the clock because I was not sleeping.
I am trying to keep busy to keep me from eating by sitting around all day
Check into what causes you to over eat. !
Mine was boredom,stress & insomnia I am not saying I am not over eating at times since I got a hold of why I was,but when those moments come I try right then & there to be MINDFUL of what I am going to eat Do I always listen to that NO ,but it helps more than not

Hi! I'm Labradoodle mom(:Jody). I'm new to the team. I've been an emotional eater all my life. My mom put me on a protein shake diet wen I was 8. That started a cycle of anorexia bulimia and compulsive overeating that lasted into my 40s. Now I just struggle with emotional eating and sometimes, like right now, I'm having trouble getting to the bottom of my calorie range. I have a beautiful labradoodle named Molly who is 2 1/2. I have been blessed with the best husband in the world.

Right now, I have been on SP for a month. I lost 10 lbs the first three weeks and now I am gaining...I don't know if I'm eating too much or too little. I need some advice.

Congratulations on getting through 30 days. You do have a lot going on, but you can absolutely break the bond to eating over it. Having a good eating plan that you truly consider fair and that allows you at least some of your favorite foods even if they aren't that "healthy" is the best partner to your desire to have food play a more normal role in your life.

When you feel like eating, consider coming here to let us know what's going on. Or you can message me directly.

You know, emotions aren't the only reason to want to eat more than we actually need. It would be a hard life if we ate only that because we really don't need much for good health. But we're wired to like a bit more than that, and humans have used some food for celebration for generations. If we want to sustain new eating habits, they likely won't last without being able to include those.

And maybe even a few emotional eating events along the way.

Hi all,

I have been working the Spark Plan for just over 30 days. I have done well. But it is that wonderful time of the month for me and I am making the worst food decisions. I am still staying within my calorie range but the choices are awful.

I also have a family issues that is putting a huge strain on my family. I was an emotionally wreck for over 3 years. I decided to start focusing on myself, which brought me here to spark. 30 plus days later my emotional self is much better.

My son and daughter also graduate this year. My DD will be going away to college which is 7 hours away and there will be a huge hole in my life.

Anyway dealing with a lot of different things and I just want to reach out and find support as these life changes are taking place, so that I will not reach for food to comfort me.

KK, just to say, I found that finding a reasonable eating plan, and just determining that most urges to deviate from that came for false need for food, whatever the stimulus, was the most effective way to combat emotional eating. I saw that it had become more "painful" to eat outside my plan than to just "suffer" the difficulty of waiting for my meals. I didn't not have to start with a lot of restriction, as you likely will, but the payoff in increased (not total!) peace with my eating has been worth every white-knuckle moment. (I also stopped wishing for it to get and stay easy.)

Of the people I've known who kept off substantial weight with bariatric surgery, the common factor has been that they just never want to have to face the initial difficulty again. They are willing to put up with any sacrifice to avoid that. None of the sacrifice is as "heavy" as the difficult y of being obese in the first place, and the difficulty of early transition. (sometimes the difficulty didn't occur right in the beginning after the surgery, but a few months later.)

Welcome! Please know that it is totally possible to have the desire to eat because of emotions and still not do it. Yes, it can be uncomfortable, but so is overeating and all its consequences, no? It might take awhile before you feel the effects in your knees, but there will be other pleausres along the way, and it will be worth it! And emotions are not the only reason we are compelled to eat unnecessary food. You'll figure out a reasonable eating plan over time, and hold on to stick to it!

I used to use the I'm-not-getting-what-I-want-so-I-deserve-t
o-just-eat justification. It's a good one because there will probably always be something we want that we don't get!

If you have a dietician, yes, be sure to let him/her know what the plan is. Do you actually have to plan exactly what you'll have at each meal? Could you say, I'm going to have about 3 oz. of meat, a cup of starch, a piece of fruit, a thumb or two of fat, and a cup of veggies at dinner? Three quarters of that for lunch? Cup of starch, nuts, fruit, at breakfast? I keep all those things around and just rotate them on a day-by-day basis. They add up to similar calorie counts

I had another binge yesterday - because I was tempted to cave in and have drinks and break my one year no alcohol commitment so I figured it was ok to eat away the cravings. I know this is NOT the solution and waking up this morning with a food hangover wondering how to make my day ... starting this NO S thing...

I need to do meal planning for the week for my dietitian to review - I guess that will be a starting point.

Eating less often has been central for me. I ate 5 very good meals and snacks a day for seven years. It never stopped me from emotional eating. I suppose if I had just really committed to 5 and nothing else, it might have worked, too. But I've seen on Living Binge Free and on the No S diet original site forum that people who fail with snacks almost always go on to eat even more. I feel so many people are misguided to eat meals and snacks because it's become a cultural bias instigated by the snack food industry. When Americans didn't snack as much (and of course ate very little manufactured food) they were much slimmer. Slim cultures do not snack or almost never. They aim to get hungry and enjoy their meals. They are very aware of the allure of emotional eating and are careful to avoid it. Plus they don't have food out and available all the time. No Italian for French offices have muffins, candy, and all the other stuff sitting around, nor do the workers have a stash of candy bars (or their sibling, the snack/meal bar) in their desks.

Congrats on your 8 years of success! I have been a snacker and it's gotten me into trouble - even today - started out the day well - and afternoon hits and I fell to the urge/craving. I know the same principles apply to getthing through the urges as I worked it to cut out alcohol.

Thanks for sharing in your signature about the No S Diet - it makes sense!

Welcome, BFS. The motivation for managing the binge urges is probably much the same as for alcohol: it impacts your life in a way you don't want. At tough moments, remember that it takes resisting to build the neural networks that override the urges later. There's likely no other way out. Think about how your life has changed with six months sober. Let yourself yearn for good changes from sane eating. You want that life! And know that it's mostly about riding the binge urge until it crests and falls. People often give in near the top and end up making the urge stronger next time.

Having a reasonable eating routine goes hand in hand, so that we see that we really really DON'T need that binge food. We just ate good food awhile ago and will again in not too long, right? Hold out!

I just joined today - I've been a SP member for nearing 12 years this July. I am currently on a journey to cut out alcohol for a year (almost 6 months in) but now struggling with the mindless and emotional eating in the forefront. My daughter has an eating disorder and it has brought on a slew of challenges with my own emotional eating (I eat for her, or with her when she binges).

My reason for cutting out alcohol is that I felt it was preventing me from reaching my health goals and now the emotional eating is doing the same. I start the day off with good intentions but since cutting out alcohol my cravings for sugar and junk have increased. I'm also going from peri-menopause to menopause which I believe is another contributing factor.

I'm looking forward to support and ideas from this group. I have a team helping me personally (as I'm registered with a local weight loss clinic - so have access to a health coach, dietitian and fitness specialist). I log foods early in the day and by afternoon slip off because I'm too embarrassed and can't even keep track of the foods I'm eating (nor do I want to).

I know all that needs to be done to change - I personally have a certification in Lifestyle Weight Management Specialist - just need to walk the talk and use what I teach to others.
