Hello, everyone! I've finally made friends with the treadmills at the gym (since running outside on ice really doesn't work well!), and I started the walk/jog last week. Since I up my weights on Tuesdays, my "day 1" for each week will be on Thursday. So far, so good!

And in my other life, I knit. craftygryphon.blogspot.com

Hi, I'm Nicole and thought I would give this a shot. I also signed up for the Virtual Race but now sure how to find it again. I don't see it under Fitness. Anyone know how I am supposed to find it and log in my time?

Hi! I am 54 years old, 40 pounds overweight and have always been a walker when I did choose to exercise. Over the past few months, I have had the urge to run, which I have never had before in my life. One day I was walking really fast and just started running. I couldn't do it for very long but it felt good.

I just found this 5K program this morning and decided to give it a try. While it's still cold I will probably just run around inside the house but when the weather warms up I'll take it outside. I'm happy to have found this resource and look forward to getting in better shape through running. I can use all the help I can get!

Good Morning Everyone, My name is Theresa and I'm 62 years old. I joined this team because I've always been a walker but inside I've always wanted to be a runner.

A few years ago I did a 5 day, 100 mile walk and in 2009, I started to walk a marathon. Unfortunately, due to poor training and anxiety, I was only able to complete 16 miles. I'm determined in 2012 to do the MDI Marathon again and this time I will finish it and will run/walk the entire race. So I decided to do it right this time starting with training and doing a 5K and working my way up from there.

I've found a 5K here in Maine on April 2nd and I'm going to sign up today.

www.racetherunways.com/

I guess the first thing I need to do is go out and purchase some good running shoes. Have a great day.

Jaime, in the very beginning I had these very same thoughts and it is very normal. You can do this! There is nothing like the feeling when you cross the finish line for the first time and it is at that moment that you will be hooked! Best wishes with your journey to running a 5k race!

Hi everyone! I'm Jaime and I joined the team yesterday. Running has been something I've been considering for a few weeks now and with this program It seems like a goal I will be able to reach!

I am excited to say I've joined the 5K program. The program starts you out slow of course transitioning you into running. Now I can't help but think 5K impossible! But some of you have done it! That makes me think that I can do it too.

Julighter, CONGRATULATIONS on making this wonderful decision for YOU. Losing my mom to breast cancer in 2008 was the biggest reason I started running as I wanted to be proactive with my health. If you see in any of my photos, I always race with something PINK in honor of Mom. I truly think you will be ready and most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

Hi,

I signed up for the walk/jog program for 5 weeks. I would like to participate in the breast cancer walk in Columbus, Ohio in May. Most people run that I would like to at least begin walk/run and then step it up to a run by May. The Virtual 5k is in April, so I should know what I am capable of by then.

Eastern time.

Hello! I'm Annie and I have had it in my mind to run a 5k for about a year, but I've been afraid to try. The 5k I want to run in isn't until May, but I'm hoping by doing this training I can be ready by then to actually run the whole thing. I'm excited to try!

Hi, all. I am looking for something new and am excited to try this. I walk 5ks on the treadmill already but wanted to incorporate more jogging. So here I go. I used the training module with 4 walk/1 jog today to do the 5k ans shaved 2 minutes off of my best time!!! I am excited to see where this takes me.

Peggy, I did not start running until I was 50 so it can be done! I started June 2009 and ran my first 5k race that August. I successfully trained and finished a Half marathon September 2010 so it can be done with patience and consistency. With your asthma, listen to your body and don't push beyond your current capability. You can do this!!

Chrisy, with your weight loss you will notice a difference in your running. I feel that you have that fire in the belly that is necessary to start back with running. The first time you cross the finish line you will be looking for another race. LOL been there and done that! Best wishes!

Hi! I'm Chrisy! I usually walk 5-6 miles several times but with the winter weather the last few weeks I havent been able to. But am soooooooooooooo ready to get back at it next week when it is supposed to warm up and ready to start jogging, which I haven't done in a while because of knee problems. But am ready to try it again since I've lost some more weight and strengthened muscles.

Hi, my name is Peggy. I have recently started a new Bible study at my church called "Run for God." I never ran before. I had been walking with Leslie Sansone. I did not think I would be able to do it because I'm over 50, and I have asthma. I'm doing fine so far. I've done the C25K for 4 days. After finishing week one, I decided to repeat it again since I was still have so much trouble getting my breathe.

My name is Peggy.
I live in TN, EST.

emoticon Hi! My name is Melanie. I walk 2 miles at least 5 days a week, but would like to increase my speed. I walk about an 18 to 19 minute mile. I have signed up for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Jackson, MS in April. I have also talked my husband and son into doing a 5K when we go to Hawaii this summer. I plan to walk/jog the one in April but would love to do more jogging/running in the one this summer. I started the C25K last year, but did not make it past week 3!! I am fortunate to live in town and can walk/jog around the neighborhood as well as use the track at the high school. I'm really hoping this will motivate me to start moving a little faster!!

Hi my name is Tressie and I can't jog at all! I want to run a 5K and hope the program will help me. I don't have a treadmill and it is freezing out, so I am going to layer up and start walking this week, and hopeful lead into the walk/job next week. I really want to lose the weight for my son's graduation in May! I have a lot to lose, and I hope running will help! I had a dream last night that I was in a 5K running, so maybe deep down I feel like I need to accomplish something, you know.

Hi to all!

In the beginning of July I weighed 335 lbs. At that time, I started doing Spinning Class at my wife’s urging. I discovered that Spinning is very similar to running. I was a high school and college athlete who after college ran 8 to 10 miles a week until the birth of my 3rd child in 1990. Then between both my wife and I working and having 3 kids in 4 years and our children being athletes, I stopped making the time to run. I ballooned up while in a yo-yo dieting and gaining situation. Spinning has reminded me why I used to enjoy running; to me it is mindless, me-time exercising where I can basically think about whatever I want to think about plus I like how I feel afterward. I love the endorphins!

I now weigh 295 lbs. and have set a goal of jogging a 5K in April 2011. I want to lose the weight and become a runner once more.

Pearl, welcome to your training program and of course I think you made a wise choice! While there are no guarantees, I truly feel this may get your metabolism moving again so you can lose more weight. Any time you shock your body like that, it can get the scale moving.

Best wishes with your training and if you ever have any questions just simply ask!

Hi everyone! I'm Pearl, mom of five and age 43. I joined Sparkpeople last year March. I am almost at at 40lb loss, but I am at a plateau for four months now. I just found this and joined the walk/jog program. I think this will kick me off this plateau and get back to losing more pounds. I've got two graduations, both for my kids and a high school reunion that I want to amaze the ones who were skinny minnies in high school and now have gained a few pounds here and there. emoticon I will start this Monday. I just came home from the gym and did 1.6 miles in 31 min, but would love to improve on it. emoticon

Dana, CONGRATULATIONS with discovering running! I promise you that your life will indeed change in many ways if you stay with it. Running at a track like will indeed start to cause problems and you really need to watch it. Whenever I am at a track (usually high school outside) I will reverse direction every 4 laps if I can but simetimes you can't for whatever reason. You will not have that problem on the road, street or sidewalk.

You have already figured out the secret to safe running and that is to start slowly and allow your body to adapt to the rigors of the sport. Best wishes and enjoy your running!

Hello team. My name is Dana and I started the Couch to 5k three weeks ago. Started on the indoor track at the YMCA. Because I was only allowed to go in one direction I felt my left calf was getting sore. Even though I did a five minute warm up and the exercises suggested. So I started the walk/jog at the park. The calf still bothers me some.
So I am looking forward to slowing down and starting with this team on Monday for the tips, suggestions and learning more. I have to admit I was "on top of the world" when Week 1 was completed ~ (Walk 90 sec Jog 60 seconds) It was a great accomplishment!!! I like this program because it also slowly increases the time. For the past three weeks I only go for 20 minutes and I know I need more time than that.
Best wishes for everyone as we start out

Laura, always remember that when you first took that step from walking to running you actually became a RUNNER! It took a long time for that to sink into my head, but it finally did and I feel so empowered by it. Like I always say now...it RAWKS!

Candy, your timing is perfect for a summer 5k! Don't forget to take your walk/run outside because running on a treadmill and outside running is indeed different. In cold weather climates though the treadmill is a great tool or when you have little ones and very restricted to when you can leave the house. Have a great time with running and ultimately running your first 5k race!! Best wishes!

I truly love to walk so I might just do what you have been doing walk/jog intervals. I do enjoy doing that and I'm not sure if I will ever be a real runner. I don't think my body really likes running very much! lol. I do enjoy the intervals though! I'm so happy to know that I'm not the only person who enjoys walking and isn't much of a runner!

Hey - My name is Candy and I just started walking/jogging on the treadmill, so this is perfect. At this point I can only run for 1 to 1-1/2 minutes, so I have a ways to go!! I would love to be able to participate in my first 5K this summer for my 48th birthday!!

Laura, welcome to this training program. I have been running since June 2009 when I was a walker that became bored and wanted more. When you start to actually walk/run you may like it so much that it will be more desirable than straight running. I am 52 and will always use the walk/run method because I feel like the Energizer Bunny LOL. The option is always there for you. Best wishes with your journey!

Hi my name is Laura.
I have always been a walker but would like to be able to if not run at least jog for awhile during my workout!
I joined this team to help me become a runner. I also joined the SparkPeople 5K rookie running team but I think I will put that one on hold for now until I can at least jog the 3 mins. at the end of this program. Maybe this will help me be a stronger runner down the road.

Linda, when I started running that one day in June 2009 I could manage to wog about 1/2 mile adn that was it. With patience and persistence, it did not take long for that distance to increase. At age 52 and a year and a half later I finished my first Half marathon. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish. Take it one foot in front of the other and have fun with this!! Best wishes!

Hello there!

My name is Linda and even though I am a personal trainer, I have just started trying to jog. Right now, I can run maybe 30 seconds to a minute only! I do know that is not even a mile. I can only jog about a block right now, but that is still something. I do jog a little bit to Leslie Sansone's 2 mile jog/walk. Since I started that DVD, I feel like I have actually lost weight in my stomach! YEAH!!!!

Best of luck to everyone here!

When I am ready to do the 5K jog/walk, I will ask where I can go to do that... There are no runs or marathons in Simi Valley, however, I would really like to start one here!

Jenny, I have used the walk/run method since day one of running for me which was in June 2009. My current interval timing is 2 minutes run 30 seconds walk and will be using that for my Half marathon #2 in 2 weeks. It works!! Best wishes to you as you start this training program. See you at the finish line!

Hi - Another Diana here (and DianaG, this is purely coincidental but I did chuckle when I spotted you got here first!).

I completed a couple of 5Ks back in 2005-6 for Race for Life - the UK Cancer Charity- and the sense of achievement and companionship is fantastic. My DD helped train me and was my running buddy. However the last 4 years saw me slump into a kind of 'Empty Nest' stupor and I started this year at a real low point. My knees aren't brilliant but my physio has cleared me for gentle jogging and I can already walk the distance. My dream would be to run with DD in a race over where she lives now, maybe in the summer. She would be so thrilled!

I'm relatively new to SP. I started in Jan and have already lost 7lbs and completed a couple of Challenges. SparkPeople and the support here has brought my Sparkle back and I'm looking forward to joining you in 5K Your Way Walk/Jog.

Diana, welcome! This is the perfect time of year to start training for the Spring races. If you have never run a 5k, you will be hooked after you cross that finish line for the first time. Trust me!!

Hi my name is Diana. I started the couch to 5K last year, and got to doing it fairly well. Decided to do this again, since I want to be ready by Spring. Just like being challenged!

Hi Laurie and Jen! I have been off running for just over a year now, due to injury. I love that this team came along just at the point where I'm back to walking (just last week). I hope to begin running soon, but haven't been given the go-ahead just yet. But when I do, I will definitely be following the Spark plan this time around.

Welcome to your SparkPeople Official 5K Your Way Walk/Jog Program and congratulations on your decision to RUN! My love for running started one day in June 2009 while I was out walking. I grew very bored with walking and decided to break into a jog and immediately loved the feeling. My life has changed in so many ways since that day. I started running at age 50 after never being even remotely close to being an athlete. I am proud to say that I am now a runner! I am a Jeff Galloway runner which means I use the walk/run interval method. I run for two minutes and walk for 30 seconds using a timer called a Gymboss. You do not need to use the Gymboss but it is available and costs about $25 w/ shipping.

It is my hope that I can help all of you in the beginning of your running journey. As I found out, there is so much more than simply lacing up your tennies and heading out the door. If you want to run for years to come, you will need to ease into your running gradually in order to remain injury free. That is where this wonderful program comes into play. It is designed to allow your body to adapt to the rigors of running that it will experience.

More than anything I want you to simply have fun with running. Once you experience that first 5k race you will be hooked! You will come home after finishing and look for another 5k to sign up for. Trust me.
