My last two A1C tests showed I'm pre-diabetic. It crept up from 5.9 to 6.0 in the last 6 months.

No one on my side of the family has diabetes. I talked to my doctor yesterday about my options and how I can improve my situation. I will get this under control.

Restarted 9/22/2019 and fell off. I have new dietary changes. Not only Type 2 diabetes, but also kidney issues. Have to monitor my phophorus intake and no salt. So meal planning is still rough. I cannot eat any process foods, canned, boxed, cured. No chocolate, or dark colas. Limited amounts of cheese and nuts and other phophorus foods. Anyway am going to try meal planning, not able to follow the dietary plan listed for diabetes, just makes it a little more difficult to meal plan, when starting over again. I have more testing for my kidney and High blood pressure.

I can do this, need to stay positive and be excited for each goal I meet. emoticon emoticon

Hi All! New here...first week. I was just diagnosed as diabetic a couple of weeks ago and have an A1c of 6.6, which most of you know is just barely over the cusp, however, I have been dealing with pre-diabetes for a number of years. I am committed to change and because of other health concerns have been practicing a new lifestyle change over the last 12 weeks and have lost 22#'s and got my lipids down to 203...the lowest its been in 20 years! I am currently participating in a diabetes prevention class and have committed to that for a year. I also am going to strength training and balance class twice a week and try to to get out for a brisk walk almost every day. I am 62, semi-retired with an online hobby business selling vintage jewelry on Etsy. I love to spend time with family, gardening, bead work, and reading. I live in north central Idaho.

I've been a member of Sparks now for 10 years. Sparks has helped me loose weight and live a healthier lifestyle many times. I'm getting back on track again. I have CHF and was recently diagnosed as diabetic. Currently I'm trying to eat healthier, taking metformin checking my sugar every morning and going to rehab 2-3 times a week. I try to get exercise of some sort in the days I don't have therapy,

Hi, starting SparkPEOPLE, again and this 8-week Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge. I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesteral and my trigylcerides are high. My 1st A1c was 6.4, after watching my food intake my A1c went down to 6.1, then I had my teeth pulled so I could get dentures, and just had my A1c rechecked last week and it is now at 7.1. I was trying to figure meal out by myself, but would get overwhelmed, so I decided to start again and follow the meal plan here. Make thing simpler. I am 59, married, 6 adult children, 4 that are married, and 7 grandchildren. I like to crochet, sew, cook and read.

Good morning. Im Ellen. I was diagnosed type 2 three years ago this coming October. I have been to nutrition classes and I was still struggling. Currently a1c 7.0. However, by using some of the ingredient swaps I read on here, my two week average is down to 134. Which is a terrific result. I still struggle with fitting in activity with work and 100 degree days. But I am hoping to keep improving so I can get off the pills. Have a wonderful Sunday!

Day 1...Again. I'll be 70 July 24 and have a Prediabetic diagnosis: A1C 6, up from 5.7 last year. I am "only" 6 pounds from a healthy BMI but I get right down to within a couple of pounds and yo-yo back up! I do well for awhile then slide back into old habits when I am overwhelmed with too many stressors, and there have been many this year. Sometimes all it takes is a church fellowship with too many homemade goodies to get me off track. . emoticon

Hello-Hello!!

I'm Lisa, 53 yrs and I am getting back to getting healthy. I was diagnosed with T2 Diabetes in 2013 and took the bull by the horns and lost 80 lbs. Sadly, life happened; I lost several important people in my life and fell into severe depression accompanied with anxiety and ptsd. I gained back all the weight I had lost, plus an additional 20 pounds...putting me at my highest weight ever, 414lbs. Since January 1, 2019 I have lost 50.2 lbs and am feeling so much better...but I still have a long way to go. I AM determined to continue on this healthy path...I still have a lot of mischief to get into!!

I am a single Mom of 7 kids (36yrs-15yrs) and a Grammie of 9 (11yrs-6mo)!! I still have one at home-shes my miracle child!! So I plan to be around a very long time!!

I have owned an in-home daycare for 30+ years and LOVE my job. I also write poetry and adult literature on the side. I love to garden, paint, renovate and cook/bake. I love music of all kinds and worked as a DJ way back in the day. I've kept an online journal for over 15 yrs and recommend journaling to everyone.

I am super excited to do this challenge and to continue my weight loss journey!!

PS: How do I get myself one of those weight loss tickers??

HI Sparkers,

My name is Jenn. I am 46 and been diabetic for 5 years. My doctor calls it Type 1.5 because it has components of both types. I am fully insulin dependent. My weight has been stable at between 185 and 190 for the 5 years that I have been going to the doctor regularly. I look forward to learning some tips to hopefully lose some weight and maintain my A1C numbers where they have been.

On a personal note, I am self-employed grandma of four with one more due in May. I babysit my granddaughters (four yo twins and two yo handful), every evening during the week while their parents are working. I have been blessed with the ability to help my kids with their kids, work from home and still be able to do what I want.

I look forward to getting to know everyone!!

Jenn

Hi I'm Brenda. I'm pre-diabetic and 100 lbs overweight. I've had neuropathy for years and metformin has not helped my numbers go down. I'd like to get to normal numbers, lose weight, and stop the neuropathy from advancing!

Hi!

I am Carla and I was diagnosed with Diabetes in December - 2 months ago. My husband is also a diabetic. He has very bad neuropathy and can't walk long distances which makes it difficult for both of us to get a lot of walking in - but now that I have it too, I am just going to have to walk and work out on my own so I can beat this and not suffer as he is. My goals are to lose weight and get off the meds through a lifestyle change incorporating nutrition and exercise. I have tried for many years to lose weight but diabetes is giving me more motivation to get moving. I had a jump start by losing 25 pounds while my sugar was high and out of control. I am hoping this 8 week challenge will help me more accountable and stay on track with the nutrition changes and exercise.

Hi Everyone,

Just joined the challenge and new to the group.
I'll Be turning 39 in two days and been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes since 2009.
We never really been able to get it under controlled for more then a couple of months straight until it started to get way back.

I'd like to start my last year in the 30's working on this and leaving it for my forties with success in controlling my diabetes.

I have moderate to severe neuropathy already along with many other health issues non-related to diabetes but impairing my ability to stick to a workout routine and I'm seeing my doctor back in 3 months and I need to be able to show some improvements.

Currently working with an AC of around 9 he said and taking Metformin, Glumetza, Forxiga and Lantus insulin to try and get it down.
Even though I am following healthy eating guidelines 90% of the time, my body is resisting for some reason.
I am hoping that working out on a daily basis like this program is suggesting that it'll give it the shock it needs to get in the right direction.

Really happy to be here and looking forward to getting to know you.
Have an awesome weekend.

Hi!

My name is Shirley, I was diagnosed with Type II five years ago. My A1c was 7.7 when I was diagnosed, my doctor gave me 3 months to get it down with diet and exercise. I got it down to 6.1 and it's stayed around that range ever since without any meds. I want to learn to eat healthier and take better care of myself.

Hi, I'm Marie. I was diagnosed a year and a half ago with type 2 diabetes. I did great for about the first nine months then I broke a toe and I let it derail my exercise routine. After it healed I made a few attempts to get back into a walking routine but have not been consistent. I'm here to get back on track and take care of myself.

I am Kumar. My fasting blood sugar in general has been around 140. I take various medications. Today, after a long time, I checked my fasting blood sugar and it was 112. I plan to monitor my blood sugar every day this week to know what my consistent blood sugar is. I came back to SparkPeople after 2 years and hope to be on it regularly to help myself and to cheer others on as well.

My name is Marilyn. I am returning to SparkPeople after a long break. I was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2006 and was put on Metformin. I have been able to keep A1c down below 6 for some time so Doctor took me off of the Metformin. I go in for Blood Work in February 2019. I came to this challenge because there is a goal where I can keep record of Daily Blood Sugars.

Hello SP Friends! I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes several years ago, but I acted like it wasn't real and continued to do what I wanted. Luckily I didn't do any permanent damage to my body in my time of denial, and I'd like to keep it that way. Right now I only take Metformin and am trying to control my glucose levels with diet and exercise. I want to lose weight and avoid insulin if possible. And if possible, I would love to reverse having Diabetes.

Hi! My name is Mona and I am recently diagnosed with type2 diabetes. I am VERY overweight and have osteoarthritis. Also heart issues. But I am not throwing in the towel. I'm 71 and my cardiologist, orthopaedic and family doctors say I can be healthy.

One big problem is cooking for one. I am a widow who has relied on tv dinners for a long time.
Will try to keep up with challenges.

i was diagnosed with type 2 in July 2017, I've lost 35 pds and went from 1000mg metformin to 500 mg in January 2018. I was doing really great but haven't lost any weight since January. Yesterday I got on the scale and had gained 8 pounds since January. So now I need to get serious. My blood sugar has been good but every time I start cutting back my blood sugar drops around the 80's. So I today I had a small treat in the afternoon and was able to exercise when I got home from work. So I'm hoping this challenge will help me learn how to control my lows and not eat too much to bring it up. And most of all not be so discouraged trying to lose weight and level out my blood sugar

I'm not there yet but closer than yesterday

Glad to have name for you Julia. One pound is progress - I play "yoyo" so much with a few pounds --but much more serious about getting carbs down now and getting the FBS down and trusting the weight will come down with them. My life is really too busy right now but will be for a couple months then quiet for the winter - I just try to keep the food choices planned and kept most days- I know I don't feel good if I get too much carb so am learning to make better choices and better foods each week. That busy-ness is partially because I have to move so very slow - takes me so long to do anything. Deep breath and lets fight on together!!

Hi. My name is Julia. I am on week 2 of this challenge. I've been with SparkPeople almost 2 months. Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for many years. Wood like to get my A1c down to where I can get off some of this medication. I had a spinal cord injury in 2010 so my exercises are limited. I would like to lose about 40 lbs. Have only lost 1 so far.

Encouraging you - I am up to week 4 but I keep checking back knowing the value of NOT FEELING ALONE in these battles - I am also at Pre-Diabetic phase - trying to avoid meds and advancing numbers.... Have learned much about decreasing carbs... reading some KETO articles have helped me with ideas of meals---NOT going Keto but learning from them.
Keep writing notes and I will check in with you. Blessings

Hi. My name is Sherri. I was diagnosed with diabetes just before Christmas last year. If I can't get my A1C down, my doctor wants to put me on insulin. I am currently taking medication. I am hoping that losing weight will help me to lower my A1C and keep it down. I am hoping that this challenge will help me with this.

Hi All
New to the group, but not to Sparkpeople.
I just saw my recent blood results and was not happy with my A1C results..my numbers went up.
emoticon
I see my Doctor next week and I'm sure she will read me the riot act. I don't want to go insulin, but if I don't improve that is what is she has been threatening me with.
I recently loss pounds and I put them all back and I'm sure that contributed to my rise in numbers.
I'm hope to get my mind focused, make better food selections, eat smaller portions and that my Doctor will let me try to make a difference on my own with the meds that I am presently taking.
Looking for prayers and encouragement.
I have done this before..but as I'm getting older it is getting harder to lose the weight.

New to Spark People but not new to Diabetes, eating healthy, being active, or this lifelong battle of fighting food addiction.

I'm 36 years young and was diagnosed with full on Diabetes in my mid 20's. I have struggled with weight my whole life, regardless of an active lifestyle.

I've ran Marathons, competed in triathlons, lots of 5ks, joined so many classes where I danced and spun and punched my self into a frenzy of sweat.

Losing weight is not as simple was "walking" around the block a few times for me. Pushing myself to the limit with activity has been one of the only means of success.
Low Carb has been the most successful and easiest to follow plan for my lifestyle.

I am currently move than 60lbs lighter than I was at my heaviest, however according to medical "charts" and standards I still need to lose at least 50 more pounds to be considered with in a normal weight range.

I commonly ask myself "Is it even possible for me to weigh 145lbs?!" In my entire life I have no recollection of weighing less than 193.

Me before and me currently. I've come a long way, but I have still over half way to go!

I attempted this in 2015 and failed. I am going to try again. I am a type 1 on an insulin pump. I have been a sloppy diabetic for 57 years. This probably lead to my triple bypass in 2015. I got a staph infection from the bypass and was in ICU for 3 weeks. I only have half of a sternum. My husband stopped them from pulling the plug. It took me several months to learn to walk again.
You would think that after that I would have learned my lesson. But once again I have become a sloppy diabetic. I am joining this challenge to keep from dying. I know that I can get support here if I just message. If I do message on a daily basis, no matter how simple the message, I am going to do it. Thanks

Hi everyone, I have just been diagnosed with something called Insulin Resistance, my dr said it’s not officially diabetes yet but will probably turn into it. My fasting sugar is 135 but my A1C is 5.8 so I am a little confused. I have been trying to lose weight for awhile but it is very hard. I seem to lose maybe a pound or 2 every 2-3 weeks so I am hoping this team will help me to understand the Insulin Resistance and the foods I could eat that might help me.

Hiya folks. I'm an old time SP member who has been inactive for much longer than I care to admit.
But yesterday I was officially diagnosed with diabetes. I've battled being "pre-diabetic" for about 5 yrs now. I had finally gotten my levels in the normal range for the last year. But I let myself slide back after a major tragedy and the subsequent grief of my younger sisters death.
I have other auto immune diseases (lupus and r.a.) that I have just started getting some relief from since my doc put me on humira injections. Hearing I'm now diabetic has been a hard hit. I suspected it was happening, feeling sluggish (more than normal considering other health issues), extreme thirst, lower legs swelling for no reason.... uncontrollable gerd/acid reflux is what actually made my doc do my a1c and sugar levels on the spot. I did not know diabetes could affect gerd/acid reflux. Are there others that have this issue too?

Either way, I'm here to finally quit messing around and get my body into better shape. Not just weight loss but more control of my newly dx diabetes, plus help my other diseases with muscle toning, better nutrition and just whole body mind and spirit.
Nice meeting ya'll.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.

My name is Amanda and I was diagnosed last Thursday. I see my doctor tomorrow to get all the details, but I'm trying to be proactive with this.

I have a HUGE family history of diabetes on both sides, so it was never a question of "if," but "when," so in a lot of ways I was more prepared for the diagnosis than maybe other people would be.

That doesn't mean I'm giving in, though! Remission through lifestyle changes is my goal! emoticon

Hi, I'm Bonnie. I have type 2 diabetes and have managed to keep my A1C at 5.5 for 18 months. Last fall, I started putting on weight....gained 15 pounds...even though i joined a hiking club and have hiked 10-2 mile/week; and have a standing, walking, lifting job 24 hours/week. I have started to feel it; notice more swelling around my socks. Very thirsty. Got to get back on the chain. Got to get to the finer points of Diabetes self care. Up til now, I've been successful without a lot of work. I dread the next A1C...probably be 8! I've started logging my food...but not cutting anything out. It's a start. Also got a new body weight scale that tells muscle, fat, water content of body....I like seeing facts instead of Mom's opinion, or anyone else's ...lol.About to turn 73 and some of these body changes are hard to take...arthritis is much worse lately;
skin very dry and thin...that kind of change. So, time to get serious. Thanks.

Hi. I'm Elayne, and here we go again. Time to get serious about my Type 2 diabetes.I've been with Spark since Aug 6 of 2006.I was diagnosed with diabetes in June of 2016.I need to get serious about it and log my food, exercise, blood sugars. I've tried this before but quit telling myself I can do it on my own. WRONG! I'm fortunate to not be on any medicines, but I don't want to get to that point. Looking forward to this and making new friends here. emoticon

Good morning all. My name is Donna. I've been here quite a long time. Today is my 58th birthday and I check my sugar this morning and it was 165. Not good since I didn't eat after 6pm last night. I have a lot going on right now in my life (closing of the agency I have worked for for 27 years, my younger sister passed in Oct 17 unexpectedly) and I know stress plays a HUGE part in diabetes as well. I'm on no med's currently and my last AIC was 6.1 (also not too bad) I'm just trying to get back on track. Wish me luck emoticon

I just got on sparkpeople a few weeks ago and just saw this now. I had type two diabetes lost 80 pounds and my doctor told me I no longer had diabetes.
I got pregnant even though I was told I never would and got gestational diabetes and gained 50 pounds. Now I have type two diabetes again. I've lost a about 30 pounds of the 50 I gained but need to lose way more to get to a healthy weight and hopefully not have diabetes anymore.

@Fire27 - I too am a long time SP member who has newly re-committed to the program. I'm aiming to address issues in pieces and build on them. I find if I try to change everything at once - I become overwhelmed and discouraged. I started by tracking food and water and looking to get exercise in some form 2 Days/week. Then added this challenge and aiming to participate 2 days/week.

Best wishes to you for a successful journey!

Long time member but short time activity. I started SP when I hit 50, that was 7 years ago. My weight has gone up and down. I do not like exercise or diets so that is where I am today. Fast forward 7 years and I am in bad shape. I started SP and lost about 20 pounds but brought it back and more. My department physical showed pre-diabetic. My primary care doc said the same thing. So now if I don't control the sugars I will not be recertified next year. So here I am. I know I have to change food and start back at the gym. Stress in the past 7 years has taken a toll and added the weight. Today I started on a plan. water, gym, track my food. My goal is to drop 40. If I can lose a pound a week I would be ecstatic. I know it will be a long road. My vices have to go or be moderated. Anything I do will be an improvement. So here I go................
