when i started, i was doing about 2K a day. now i'm generally past 10k a day and sometimes actually do 10 miles in a single day (walking/rebounding) but those days are occasional, not my norm. when i regularly get in my steps, i feel better. moving from a 2K a day step count to over 10K regularly took doing movement all the time. i also take mini "work out" breaks when ever I need anything (use the restroom, get an item for dinner, get water, get coffee, get tea, etc) usually even when sitting still, i'm not still--toes tapping or something still moving.

HI Val -
Yep, I remember reading about the Japanese marketing company and their 10,000 steps promo back in the 1980's when I was married to my first husband and bought my first pedometer!! I'm thinking I had read something fairly recently from SparkPeople about not needing 10K steps, but I had already seen this other article in our monthly AARP rag...

living/inf

nough.
html

And I must be old enough for it to take effect, because I've noticed that when I do actually make 10,000 steps in one day, I am just BEAT the next few days. Whereas if I just walk however many steps I actually walk (or what FitBit and my other trackers "claim" I "actually" walked, to cover the block or two around my house (which always comes to JUST UNDER 30 minutes, like 25-28 minutes. I'd have to make partial loops around my driveway I guess, to make 30 minutes... but I usually skip it...

In any case, if I just walk that little bit 20-25 minutes, I'm not so beat up by it all...

FYI, 10,000 steps a day is arbitrary - a random number proposed by Japanese marketing firms for pedometers many decades ago.

Some interesting facts based on scientific research:

- 8000 steps a day is recommended for women over 60 - see www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/0

080111231316.htm
)
- 6000 steps a day were shown to be correlated with a lower death rate in men in a Harvard Study. - see walking.about.com/cs/measure/a/locke
12
2004.htm
.

See my blog from May 2019 that discusses the findings of a recent study that advises steps between 4400 to 7500 a day can help elderly women live longer: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_p

I like combining walking and rebounding... although somedays even doing that still makes the 10,000 seem hard and I'll be wiped out the next day. Some day I will learn and finally understand the concept of "pacing myself"... You'd think I'd have already learned that by now!
