Yup, a backache is my worst enemy. I suffer from degenerative disc disease. Lately, the docs have been telling me that all women have it. But I can't even lift my small grandson any more. I'm just so tired of the pain.

Hi, I'm relatively new to SP....joined Aug 1st and stumbled onto this team. I'm from Mississauga, Ontario.

I've had back problems, since my late teens. Mainly the sciatic nerve gets pinched. When its bad I have the pain shooting down one or both legs. In addition I get Wry neck....my husband makes jokes it should be rye....which is incredibly painful as well. Late 92, to compound the problems, I hit a sheet of black ice and fell 17 steps, hitting my back on almost every step on the way down. To say I was laid up for awhile with a major misalignment and pulled muscles and ligaments.

Due to these issues, I've found walking difficult at times & forget certain types of aerobics. I have a wonderful chiro and also use a TENS machine at home.

Right now I'm relatively pain free and working on strengthening core muscles.......knock on wood, so far so good! I know I do have to be careful. Look fwd to any tips and strategies that have worked for others.

Oh, like I said, the expense has kept me from it too, but like SF pointed out, it's all about the cause and it's likely to be different for everyone. So that part I really liked.

I would have to agree SF! I'm new to this whole sciatica thing, but my doc was very clear that we needed to find the underlying cause and see what treatment worked for me. I don't need an expensive program to explain that!

Sciatic can result from pressure anywhere along the nerve so there are a lot of different problems that can cause it. It is important to pinpoint which problem you have before you embark on exercise and treatment plans. What helps one person might aggravate someone else's problem.

I agree with the "Lose the Back Pain" website in that you need to identify the cause but all the exercises in the world won't reduce your pain if it is due to bone formation that is pressing on the nerve (which is what I had). I need to focus on strengthening my core muscles - especially my abs because if they are strong with will help to reduce the stress on my back. Some weeks I do better than others on keeping up with my core muscles (:-P)!

Hmmm.... You know the old saying if it looks too good to be true it probably is? That's the feeling I get from this website... I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has tried it. Maybe someone could start a new post asking about it?

Oh, sorry. :) I wasn't sure if Spark allowed links to commercial sites.

Also, Sonia, I just watched the Dance in the Rain movie. Very nice! Are you familiar with the likes of Louise Hay or Wayne Dyer? Maybe they would be helpful to you as well. (I'll bet there's a team for them too.) emoticon

Hi again all! Hmmm, that is unfortunate that none of you seem to be finding any relief. My back and hip pain are ongoing, but luckily my sciatica has been short-lived when it surfaces. Have any of you heard of Lose the Back Pain? I keep meaning to try it because there are rave reviews on the website and I think they offer a money-back guarantee! But it's expensive and keeps getting bumped from my list. Anyway, maybe that's something for you to look at?

Hello FAYE45 and GIRANIMAL,

I also have Sciatic nerve problems on both legs mostly my right one. I am not as lucky as you, my pain doesn't allow me to swim (Which I miss so much) I have done physical therapy and pain management and for me it did not help me but others it has help a great deal.

What has help me a great deal was stretching slowly and getting on the gazelle a few mins a day.
I am sure others will be in shortly. Hugs Sonia

I have tried physical therapy, I do go to a chiropractor I have had acupuncture didn't seem to help, this is a been going on for over 15 yrs, my old Dr. used to give me cortisone shots when it go bad but my new Dr dont give them. I found they helped alot, also swimming is a great help.
I had to deal with depression, because of the pain, an its hard for people who dont have any problems to understand that

I'm new here too, and new to sciatica. I've been having back problems off and on for the past year and my doc diagnosed me this time around. I'm positively miserable and wondering how this is going to affect the rest of my life. I'm a mom to 3, stepmom to 2, work full time and go to school full time, plus running the household! Everyone has been very helpful this past week, but I feel so useless and depressed. And no painkillers have worked at all - I won't take narcotics due to past problems. I'm just bleh!

Hi Faye! I am new here too. emoticon Have you tried physical therapy? If you can, I highly recommend it. It's helped my low back and SI joint pain (which included sciatica awhile back) a lot in the past. In fact, I just yesterday started going back and already got some relief. (I know that sounds crazy, but it's true!) Or perhaps chiropractic? I've had some success with that too. I have yet to try acupuncture but I hear great things about it. I know your frustration with the pain meds. emoticon Mine also stopped working (two of them) so I've been off them for over a year now.

I am new here an am hoping that some people here can help me, I have been having sciatic nerve problems for the last 15 plus yrs. an it seems to be getting worse. The one thing that I have found that helps me is swimming, I don't have the pressure on my hips an knees. This last couple of weeks have been bad the pain just sucks the energy right out of me. I take pain meds to help but there are time when it just don't work.
I find it very frustrating, an hard to make friends, most women like to go out shopping at the malls an that is my worst enemy walking on the floors in malls I have been to our local mall 5 times in 5 yrs not the place I like to go.
Any way if their are any of you out there that can give me any help I would love to here from you
