Not sure about your special diet needs. I would work with your naturopath and dietician to see how to best meet your special dietary needs.

Hi, My name is Lish and I will be having RNY on May 16th! My husband is having his on May31st.
Right now, I'm trying to get prepared for Step 2 diet. Does anyone know where I can get some good ideas?
One unusual thing about me is I'm a lacto ovo vegetarian - have been one for about 20 years or so. I have been following a liver shrink diet for 4 weeks in preparation for surgery. Gotta luv those protein shakes

Think of this as a positive thing! It gives you more time to get ready and like Cindy said, eat like you've already had it. That will only help you when it's actually here.

Do your best each day! Eat like you already had your surgery and soon it will be the truth!
Do not be sad but be resolved to do your best to lose weight and resolve your food issues before the new surgery date!

Yeah, sadly, my surgeon had to clear his schedule for today and they moved my surgery to May 25th. I am so sad about it, but have to get over it. Thanks for thinking of and continue to think and pray for me on the 25th.

Cindy, Welcome to the team! Congrats on losing the 80 pounds!
Your weekly weight loss may slow down but if you follow the dieticians food plan, exercise more days than not and put lots of energy into the exercise, and work on moving beyond your personal food issues then you will continue to lose weight. Keep tracking everything so that you know if you are following the food, exercise, emotion plans. Do not focus so much on a specific number on the scale that is where our past weight loss experiences failed. I reached the magic number on the scale and ok I am there and then I felt free to eat again and regain came quickly. Rather think about other more long term goals.
I would like to lose 15 more pounds but if I do not I will not be disappointed. The life goal I have set for myself is to Maintain a healthy weight, to be healthy and active in my faith and community, and to exercise regularly. So at this point almost 20 months out...I am healthy, thriving according to one doctor, I am active in faith and church community, actively exercising more days than not. So I continue to be at my life goal and will continue on that path.

If you do these things you will keep losing! BTW I have been stalled at my current weight (I fluctuate a couple of pounds up and down) for 6 months. But I look great and feel great. I am active and exercising so I am ok with this stall.

Hi, I am new to this team. I had my Roxen Y bypass surgery on January 24th of this year. I started my journey last July at 320 lbs and lost 20 of it before surgery (surgery weight 299). At my 3 month check up yesterday I am down to 241 (58lb loss). Kinda nervous that this first 3 months had a very good weight loss and scared the next 3 months might not. I am still 80 pounds from my goal weight. But I am hoping and praying God will keep me in check and the weight loss continues.

OH yes, Cindy, I'm sorry. I've removed sugar and refined carbs from my diet since January first to prepare for this. I had to attend a nutritional seminar and see a nutritionist for a while before I could get approved for the surgery. She taught me how to eat 3 months after surgery and I've been doing that since. No pop here or anything like that. I knew if I couldn't do it now, I never would and it would be pointless to get the procedure. I really impressed myself. I also quit smoking since February 2nd. I have really been amazed at all I have accomplished. I am really proud of myself and cant wait to start seeing some results!

I would really recommend that you start now to get off the refined carbs (breads, sugar, starchy foods) as you do not want to go through sugar withdrawl at the same time you are trying to recover from surgery. Plus switch from pop, juice, whole fat milk, sugar laden specialty drinks/smoothies to water. A lean food plan of lean protein, veggies without sauces, whole grains, and fruit in smaller proportions will get you over sugar withdrawal before surgery which will make the recovery easier. Call your dietician and ask about this.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging words. I really needed and so appreciate it. My pre op diet doesn't start until the day before surgery so I was pleased about that. I know that's going to be super hard. I have ordered a best selling book on this process and it should arrive today. I've been looking forward to that for two weeks. I really need you girls so keep the comments coming. I've already had some great helper and got some great advise on here already.

I just joined Sparkpeople and am also glad to find a bypass group online! I had the surgery on December 14th and have lost 61 pounds since then (22 pre-surgery, for a total of 83). I was terrified, too, the last weeks about surgery. Unsure if I could commit to the lifestyle that the pouch demands, afraid of being thin after so long with my fat insulating me from everyone around me. But, I am so glad that I did this! It's okay to be afraid of the unknown, but know that we're all here with you every day! You can do this!

The closer you get to your surgery date the more your emotions will swing back and forth from excitement and anticipation to anxiety and even fear. It is normal!
Check out my blog for those just starting their journey there are some great resource books and websites. As you are getting close it is time to go out and buy a few necessities for your future. A small smoothie size blender (we eat small portions after surgery). I like the ones that are upright and find the ones you turn over tend to leak for me. Buy a few colorful fun 6 inch plates and some small appetizer forks and spoons (cheaper than totler utinsels!). They help you with small bites and small portions. A full plate tricks your mind into thinking it is full after just a small serving because the plate looks full. I also recommend looking at the baby section or online for 2 ounce and 4 oz storage containers with lids. Some glass dishes and some plastic but you will need lids for them. Then prepare pureed foods and freeze them before surgery. That way you will not have to stand in the kitchen and cook in the early days. Just thaw and reheat. Your nutritionist can give you some ideas of foods to freeze for your food plan.
I will add you to the surgery list this weekend. Looks like you will be starting the pre-op diet this week. Try to follow it the best you can. Your surgeon will be able to tell if you followed it or not. Some surgeons have stopped the surgery if the liver is not shruken away from the stomach as there is too much risk of the liver being nicked and an infection developing. I found that thought helped me resist those urges to eat something not on my food plan.

I had a lot of the same problems but for me they had trouble getting a tube down my small throat and scarred it up so that I could not swallow well. It took me 24 hours to drink 4 oz and most of it did not make it down but dribbled out of my mouth. It took me about 1 1/2 months to get beyond pureed food. Meat is hard to digest so you may find that the dietician and surgeon may not want your to have meat for a while. Check with your medical team on what foods to eat. They know you and what went on in surgery and in your recovery so far. You need to follow their directions to the letter so that your recovery continues to go smoothly.

Hi all. Sorry for the delay getting back here. Thanks all for the well wishes and goodies.

Well I spent one night in ICU D/T Increased BP and decreased O2 sat both secondary to pain. Morphine does not work for me and when I got them to realize this things moved along. from what my wife was told there was a bit of a SNAFU in the OR. once they had me under they realized that the OR table was broken and had to transfer me back to a a gurney, get a new or table and re- sterilize. I failed the swallow post op day one and did not pass until LATE day 2 so a minor set back. since then I feel all has gone well, I'm down 43 so far, I'm am having a terrible time getting food in but am doing it. I move to soft in 2 days an suggestions i am soooooooo tired of yogurt and cottage cheese. I AM A MEAT EATER...lol

Hi everyone! I haven't been around lately, been working a lot. But, I am happy to announce that my surgery will be this next Monday, April 9 at 10:30. I am a little nervous not having ever had surgery before, but I am excited too!! I'm having the lap-RNY.

Zulebenleben, Glad you are doing well! Sounds like you are having a normal recovery which is good. You are doing great on the liquids! Brace up soon you will be having pureed foods! What I did during my recovery was to get out every couple of hours and walk.
I would walk for 30 minutes with your water bottle with you and then come in and have a pureed drink, nap for 20 minutes and repeat the whole cycle. When the weather was bad I would go to the mall or grocery store twice a day and walk there.
The walking seem to make me feel better physically (get rid of gas), helped my food move through my digestive track better, and gave me more energy.

So you are doing great the week feeling will go away when you move to pureed foods. do not worry you have a lot of stored energy for your body to use until you are ready for pureed foods. I was on pureed foods for a long time as I had problems for the first two months with soft foods and had to keep going back to pureed foods. Some of us just take longer to heal!

Hi Cindy and everyone,

Surgery went well, stayed for 2 days, home, slept, lightheaded mixed with feeling weak, discovered my stomach is tolerating clear liquids only, (34-40 ozs a day and that is sipping when I am up) protein not there yet. Not discouraged, treating my system like a brand new baby, reading the signs it gives me, the way it feels and reacts. Body healing well from the holes, I can now turn in bed somewhat and not feel the pull of my muscle and stitches. Took my first long walk (big block) felt good after it and than took a nap, reading and charting, have doctors appt. on 5th.

The reaching that did me in was reaching out to pull the car door closed. It was not a heavy door either.

The treadmill sounds like a great plan. Just add a couple minutes every few days to each session and soon you will be like tracy in Ontario who is now walking 10+ miles a day. She started out walking for 10 minutes! Use the Exercise Checkin Tread if you need some encouragement to exercise. I use that to keep me accountable to continuing my exercise habbit!

Luckily it was a shortened shopping trip. I just needed veggies for my bunnies. I am starting the treadmill today. Im starting with 4 walks 15 min each. For now that is what I can do. Each day gets easier. Thanks for the reaching tip. I knew to be careful with weights. Gee so sad my hubby has to clean litterboxes for now.

Congrats on a sucessful surgery. Walking is so important. what I did was try to get out and walk for a little bit 3 to 4 times a day rather than one long walk. It gave me more energy and helped to get the gas/air out of the abdomin from the surgery. I also tried to do a little more each day.
As to grocery shopping do not forget to stop and rest on the shopping cart as you need it. Plus plan a stop for tea and a rest in a chair in the middle of the grocery shopping. Most stores nowadays have a coffee shop with a couple of tables and chairs. So take advantage of them.
Soon you will be able to walk without problems and do everything you need to do. Keep up the great job you are doing in your recovery. Do be careful not to lift or reach out for a few weeks. I was not careful enough and pulled the muscles and ripped out the disolvable stitches that held my pouch in place against the stomach wall as it was healing. I did it twice. and it set me back a week each time.

I had my gastric bypass on 3/28 and came home Friday. I think I am progressing well. I go upstairs at least twice a day and go out walking once. Today was grocery shopping. Slow and steady for 45 min. I am getting in all three protein shakes and almost enough fluids. Little things like getting my socks on feels like such an accomplishment.

I had surgery on Mar 5 so i'm about 2 weeks out of surgery now. Going shopping tomorrow for food that i will be able to eat starting monday, should be fun! Have been up walking since the day of surgery. Also had to have a hernia repaired while the doc was in there.

My reason for having surgery was to stay alive, my fatty liver had turned to nash and the doctor was happy that i still have about 70% of good liver left to live off of!! so this is a win win for me ..i lose weight ...stay alive ..oh and save money too!!

Hello everyone I had surgery on March 13th all went well, home on the 15th and doing the porch walk right now until the rain clears. I made a list for what to take to the hospital with me and did not include a microwave heating pad- the ultimate in getting the gas moving in your tummy. So put that on your lists of must haves.

With much excitement and waited breath, I finally have a surgery date of March 27, 2012.

excitement and fear you will find that you bounce from one to the other many times a day. So just keep moving forward and it will all work out! Have fun on your trip. I will try to get your date on the calendar tonight but I have a committee meeting and so I am not sure I will be able to get on the computer tonight.

Dates set. RNY 03/07/2012. Not as nervous as I was but still a little which I think is normal before any surgery. Wife and I going on an anniversary cruise on Saturday and 3 days latter I have this life changing experience. I think I am now more excited than scared.
