I really hope my insurance will take a doctor's note. I wasn't referred to the clinic I am going through, I haven't had a doctor's referral so I wonder what they will do next. I go through blue cross and it seems their rules are always changing!!

The Insurance Approval Process is different for each insurance provider. You can go from just needing a doctor to say that the surgery is needed to have up to 6 months of return visits to your surgeon or weight clinic.

In my experience I had to go to my weight clinic for 6 months and have visits with at least one of their Dr's and the Dietician every month for that 6 months. After all the documents were submitted to my insurance provider the who process of the approval took only a few weeks and I got my approval letter before my Doctors or Surgeon did,

Im new to the boards and currently in the process of waiting for insurance approval. Nervous because im not sure what it takes to get approved. I was just curious about how long it took all of you for the approval time?

Saturday we left the hospital to get a bite, freshen up and get some groceries. I was notified that he passed away around 10:15 with nurses there. It has been difficult as we were Mekong plans for skilled nursing and hospice follow-up afterward. I have been turning to friends and my faith.

I am so sorry to learn of your husband's cancer. I know that those of us who pray will be adding your family to our prayers. You are right to focus on your husband. Seek a counselor to help you deal with this situation so that you do not turn to food for comfort. Ask your dietician to help you to develop a food plan that you will be able to handle as you devote time to assisting your husband.
May Gods Comfort, Healing Spirit, and Strength be with you as you and husband begin this difficult journey.

My dear Friend!
Please just keep eating healthy and continue on this journey if it is at all possible for you. The lighter you are when you do get surgery, the safer it is.

My surgery for July 31 is placed on hold. My husband was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic and liver cancer. He needs me right now. I had been on all liquid for about 10 days. Tuesday had first dinner and tried to be moderate. Lost 3.6 this week. Trying not to turn to food for comfort. Today he will start to get put of bed which he can only do with 2 nurses and his walker; when I ask what he needs, he wants to go to bed and get some rest. His infection is so high so they have given 4 different I-v antibiotics. He seems to be a little less confused. What a difference in less than a week.

I am only updating the calendar twice a month so do sparkmail me if I do not get you added. I was supposed to add a couple of people this weekend but I do not remember who and do not have time to go look through the postings.

Best wishes to all of you with an upcoming surgery date. We wish the best for you on this important date.

This is the upcoming surgery list as of 7-23-2013. I encourage team members to send sparkgoodies, sparkmail or post well wishes in the threads to these team members to congratulate them on their upcoming surgery! If you pray then add them to your prayer list.

If your name should be on this list but it is not showing, then let me know so that I can add it. Sometimes I see the post about the date while at work during lunch but by the time I get home I forget to write it down. Let me know your name/type of surgery/dates and I will add them. Sometimes my email gets turned off and I miss some posts. So do not be afraid to send me a sparkmail requesting me to add you to the list!

Does anyone have a surgery in July, August, or September? Let me know the type of WLS and when it will be. I will add you to the list.

I had RNY on 1/28/13. I have lost 90 pounds and want to lose 30 more. I just found this site, I already belong to MFP and have been there for 150 days. I am from West Chester, Ohio (north of Cincinnati). Happy to meet y'all.

For more pureed foods here are a couple of sources.

Your dietician! Yes if asked she/he will give you some tips tailored to you.

Shelly has great ideas and lots of varieties of special protein shakes. www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.co
m

Chef Dave Fouts - had gastric bypass 5+ years ago and he has great recipes. You can see some things on his website but for the best stuff you need to pay I think it was about $25/year. www.chefdave.org

The Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies is a great recipe book (but no photos!). Chef Dave wrote most of the recipes! Chef Dave has a couple of cookbooks. I own three of his cookbooks and he even autographed them for me at a weight loss surgery conference.
Go to a bookstore and browse through the weight loss surgery cookbooks. Be careful many of them have too large servings and not enough protein. So it pays to look before you buy.

You have a wise BFF, Vic! Hearing that from your X is priceless and the best revenge! Poor girl, have to feel sorry for her.
CUTIERAM, CINDY has the best advise usually. I am glad you found something that works for you. I am eating a lot of home made chicken ad veggie soup at this stage.

What made me feel decent about the whole thing is when my BFF (who is a woman also) called me to tell me how her new job was going for her and then asked how everything was going for me. I told her my adventures of the day and what I found out on the scale. She was ecstatic about the weight loss, but when I told her about my Ex her only replay to that was "You know she is going to try and work your heart strings to get you back now don't you?" Gee... Really? You honestly think so? Women aren't really like that are they? (all said in a very sarcastic tone mind you LOL!) My friend laughed and said "Ok, I figured you caught on... But I just had to say something was all."

Vic that is sssoooo wonderful. You must be feeling like a million bucks. Feeling healthy is the best thing in the world.
Seeing your ex girlfriend and her telling you how great you look and that she wants to talk is PRICELESS!
I bet you she regrets letting a solid good guy go now he is turning into such a hottie.
Good for you Brother! I am sending you a virtual High Five and a huge Pat on the Back.

Actually, what celebrating I did (if you want to call it that) was sleeping in a bit because I was up til 3:30 AM dealing with a flood in my place, then being woke up by my parents calling me to tell me that they were having issues with one of their cable boxes and didn't know what was wrong. I get there, sure enough they left the window closest to the cable box open during the storms last night and the cable box got wet. (Can we say FRIED CABLE BOX! LOL!) So I went to the cable office to exchange the box out. As I'm there who spots me? MY EX-GIRLFRIEND (My most recent one) she comes up to me and tells me she notices the change and I thanked her and such. Then she asked what how much I lost, I told her what I knew (which was the figures I had up yesterday) She then asked if we can talk about our issues some time. My answer "Talk? Sure... No harm in talking them out. But I wouldn't expect more than that. I'm still pretty upset about the situation." I came home and a scale that I ordered was sitting waiting for me to bring in. I brought it in, made sure everything was calibrated right and gave it a shot. Thursday I my 1 month follow up with the surgeon. But if the two scales are close to each other, I will be able to actually do a weekly thing now. LOL!

Congrats on leaving the 400's behind! That is a great accomplishment. How did you celebrate? New clothes, new exercise toy, visiting some place that has special meaning to you?

Forge ahead and soon you will leave the 300's behind too!

Hallo CUTIERAM!
There are amazing post bariatric web sites with awesome recipies. I am sure that you could just blitz fruit and veg into a puree, add some protein powder and be good to go? Avoid to much fat, refined carbs and sugar, I suppose?
I hope it goes well for you.

I wish this honeymoon could last the rest of my life. Seriously. I would love it if eating remains a scheduled appointment and a chore. I love the freedom of having that awful monkey off my back.
I know it is not balanced, but wouldn't that be just wonderful?!
How is your studying? Hope your brain just gobbles up all that study material, the way I did chocolate before my RNY!
Bless you!

Sounds like everyone who had surgery this month is doing well!!!!! Congrats to all of you!

Maria, Enjoy the time where food does not interest you! It is called the honeymoon period and lasts from a couple of month to about one year. So make your lifestyle changes now. Keep up with the walking and drinking! Hopefully you will become adept at avoiding jumping two year olds until everything is all healed! Some of us become lactose or dairy intolerant after surgery so you may want to try a soy or vegetarian protein powder and see if that helps.

Cutie, As to pureed foods. I made a pumpkin custard with some protein powder added to it. I used the pumpkin pie recipe and changed out the sugar and used evaporated skim milk and added protein powder to it. I had to increase liquid when I added protein powder. I also took a chicken avocado tortilla soup (only 3 tortillas to give it the proper flavor). I pureed the soup and added a little greek yogurt or light sour cream to make it creamier. I then froze it small plastic baby food containers. It lasted for a long time. I even found that I liked the pureed soup better than the original recipe! I also took my Ham and split pea soup and added a some protein powder and blended it well and froze it also. So try making a favorite food and add plain greek yogurt or some protein powder and blend it so that it becomes a puree. Put in 2 or 4 oz containers and freeze since even a small batch becomes lots of meals.

From now thru October I will have to only post the surgery update 2 times a month as I will be studying hard for a work required certification test in October. So let me apologize for letting the team down on posting the updates.

Best wishes to all of you with an upcoming surgery date. We wish the best for you on this important date.

Hi there,

My surgery was May 2nd. I'm now on pureed food and am supposed to start soft foods at the end of the month. My doctor says I am doing well. I don't, however, know what to expect as far as weight loss. I know it all doesn't just fall off but what is normal? Since surgery I have lost 12.5 pounds which sounds pretty good to me; I have lost 33 pounds total. I get nervous when I have to bend or anything because one night I woke up from a dream about a hernia. My incision sites have healed well and I haven't met any food I couldn't handle yet. I do wonder what in the world do people really eat on this pureed diet...I've been eating just whatever. Mostly grits and soft scrambled eggs with the occasional protein shake...yogurt...I feel like I'm eating just junk...

Surgery Date:
5/2/2013

Goal Weight:
140lbs

Wanting to do something and actually doing something are two completely different things

Sometimes life gives you lemons...I choose not to make lemonade but to make a little pie with mine

Cindy- No need to apologize! You do a wonderful job of keeping everyone updated on the surgery schedule, not to mention all of the other posts you keep up with and respond to.

Please take all the time you need to put your needs at the top of the list! We all appreciate you.

I agree Vic!
CINDY I hope you ace those exams! You go make us proud, and no problem if you can't get online as much. We will be waiting for you right here.
My RNY surgery was on the 14th, and I am starting to feel like myself again. I walk at a decent pace now- no more snail paced shuffling.
I am so happy that the miracle happened. I am now seeing food as something that I would either like to put into my body or not. Love the pouch.
I enjoy the smell of food, but the thought of eating it puts me off. Except chocolate, I hate that smell now.
The first two days were awful. When my two year old fell onto my stomach it hurt like heck. But I am feeling fine, and have been walking about 3km a day, I think. I am drinking a lot of water, even if I have to stay up a little later to get it all in. And still like it, thankfully.
My protein shake makes me feel wobbly unless I eat it with fruit puree and joghurt.
I will let you know what the doc said.
Thank you for rooting for me teamies!

Cindy;

I don't know about anyone else but I personally don't see it as letting the team or group down. I believe that Family First (because Family is always there), Work/Career Second (need to provide of course), everything else falls into it's place after that. If you need to cut your load for a few months because of the needs of Family or Work I know I understand that, and I would like to think everyone else can understand that too.

It is so exciting to see how everyone is doing after their surgery and how others are prior to their surgery.

The powerguy is right if you feel something is not right then ask the surgeon about it. Do not let them ignor it.

Let me say my case was very unusal. I have a very tiny throat and the surgeon had difficulty getting a tube down it which then caused swelling and a little scarring. When I woke up I could not swallow any liquid. I was kept two extra days (total or 4 or 5 days) and had to have two barium swallowing tests before they would release me. When released I still was not able to drink as much as they wanted. I still had problems with pureed and especially soft foods and had to go back for many tests. I finally was sent to my Gastroenterologist and he did a endoscopy and throat dilation (stretching the esophagus) which enabled me to swallow. He also found some of the sutures had somehow ended up in my esophagus and that slowed the food going down and caused pain when swallowing and the feeling that food was sticking part way down. He removed those and I could again swallow. If I had not been proactive It might have taken a lot longer to figure out what was going on. I tell you this not worry you as what happened to me is very rare but to encourage you to let people know if you feel that something is not right after surgery.

One thing the hospital I was at did was with every meal tray they had 1oz plastic cups (I jokingly called them my shot glasses LOL!) and they were very insistent on taking in 1oz a hour off the tray. (Never mind at that rate you never came close to finishing a tray before they brought you a new one.)

Also they may not give you any fluids until the morning after your surgery and have you go to the GI Lab and take in 2 types of barriem. In my case I was still having issues with excessive bleeding at the drain site at the time and wasn't feeling my best during some of the standing moments. But of course they quickly took me back to my floor and my team got on the situation quickly.

My advice is simple, if at any point you don't feel right, comfortable, or something just don't look right to you. Don't be afraid to say something to your team. They are there to help you and look out for you.

I agree with the others. Drink little sips of water as often as you can. Get up and walk, walk, walk as much as you can after surgery. I asked the nurse on my floor what the record was for walking laps on the floor after RNY surgery. It was actually my friend who set the record at 1 1/2 miles. I was determined to beat that. I did and walked 27 circuits/laps of the floor which was about 3 miles. I did have to rest for a little bit after about 1/2 mile. Walking helps you handle any pain better and will also help to work the gas out of your pouch and intestines. Good luck.

My surgery is the day after tomorrow. I will be travelling to Pretoria, and will have to sort out the toys, clothes, etc. for my whole family for more than a week away from home. And of course all my health admin, and things like blender and shakes and small portion utensils I will need post op.
I will not be able to log onto SPARK for a couple of days. But will try to check in when I can.
So speak to all of you soon!
Keep me in your prayers and fondest thoughts emoticon
