I have set my target date....September 15, 2010. That is the magic day, because I will be traveling to the "Smoke Free Zone" for my grandson's 2nd birthday. I call it the SFZ because my daughter and her husband do not smoke, and there is no smoking in their house or on any of the AFB property.

everything/one must start out with Baby Steps. One Person, One Idea, One Reality at a time.

My quit date was March 28, 2010 due to severe chest pains and a 3-day stay at the hospital. I haven't touch a cigarette since that morning, nor do I want to now. I don't feel like a slave driven by my master anymore and I can do things that I never imagined before. I didn't want to quit before because of being over-weight, but heck I only added about 10 lbs by the time the cravings stopped, so don't give up or make anymore excuses. It is a prize in itself!

Today, August 30, 2010. I left my cigarettes behind on purpose so I wouldn't have them at work. Chances are my roommate will probably smoke the rest of them by the time I get home.

1newmrs,

I can relate to you! I will be smoke free for a year 9/16, but I have gain 30 lbs as well! I went back to smoking and lost the weight that way, but whenever I quit it came back. I am planning on giving my body time to adjust, and I hope to lose the weight while staying smoke-free

Good luck to you, and me too!

My quit date was 10 PM on 9/11/09 for my son's 8th birthday - he was born on 9/12/01. I have not smoked since. Most days I am happy with my choice not to smoke. My husband and my adult daughter both smoke, so there is rarely a day when I am not confronted with the thought of having a cigarette. I have gained 30 pounds since quitting smoking and I was already above my desired weight so that is what led me to join SparkPeople. I am hopeful this group will help me back to my goal weight without returning to the smoking habit. The cost is just too high!

Hi - -

My Quit Date was on March 17, 2010.

I just made it to day 102 today. I do also recommend the Quit Smoking Support Site: www.quitnet.com

I couldn't have gotten this far without them. But I didn't find this website until the beginning of June.

I am getting my mind ready for the quit because i know its like a game of ping pong in the mind.. I can do this and I will. :). I am setting up a support network and personal plans when a craving comes at me.. Its called the nicodemon.. that nicodemon does chatter in the head .. But it is very doable to get over the nicodemon

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. I wanted to say Halloween, but I was just talking to my friend and I said: "Why is it we have to say I'm going to quit Monday, or after this pack, or carton, or right after my next cigarette. Why can't I quit NOW? I guess it's hard to picture my life without just one more." Well.... I just finished a pack, and today is ALMOST Monday. I think that's close enough. I'm going to call my mom and cancel that order for a new pack.

Genius doesn't follow the rules and it doesn't create them, either.

Monday, May 24th. I have been an on-again, off-again smoker since I was 14 (so, going on 22 years now). I am setting a horrible example for my kids, I hate how it smells, I am beginning to hate how it tastes, and I really don't like how I feel in the morning. Let's see if I can do this.

I'm determined to quit smoking. I've tried a couple of times, with the help of Chantix and failed. This time, I'm going to try it with sheer will power. I'm setting my quit date as 5/25/10, which is my daughter's first birthday. I don't want her growing up with me as a smoker. It's time to do this, and I know that I can!

Hey Gemini! You and I are at about the same point in our non-smoking. I know we can do it! I too have felt cravings at particular times of the day. BUT I can ignore them! The patch has been really useful, better than the gum in my opinion. I'm still working on the new routine. I've just been working through the cravings to help ignore them. Going to start my new workout routine soon, so the benefits of working out will be another way to motivate myself though cravings. Why do I want to backtrack on the workouts with a cigarette? :) How has you first week without cigs gone?

My quit date is Monday, May 17...I'm starting a stricter exercise regime, riding my bike to work, and starting a new project to distract myself. Wish me luck!

I've been smoking forever it seems but decided that today Mothers Day will be the Last for me. Smoking and Zumba just don't mix LOL! emoticon Is May 10th !

my quit date was May 4, 2010. i'm on day 6. using the patch and going to follow step down process EXACTLY this time (as it is my final quit!!!)contrary to popular belief you don't have to be crabby when you quit. i am happier!yes a little more airheaded-but who cares!the biggest problem i have is getting through times i normally smoke. it feels weird, but forming new habits and will feel natural soon i know.i am a non-smoker yeah!!!!

I have almost made it a week! Had some small cravings, which I could for the most part easily ignore. I can really tell the cravings before I leave for work and after work. I put June 30th as my quit date. By then I'll be done with the patch and once off it I will have relearned how to do things without the cigs!

Made it 48 hrs! I know it's not a lot, but I had a major test tonight. Had a couple beers with supper at a bar. So not only did I have the after a big meal, after a couple beers cravings, but also the second hand smoke cravings. The patch is working! Helping me re-learn my habits without going crazy during the cravings.

I quit on the 16th of last month, and I've continued to lose just over a pound a week since then. I definitely stepped up the exercise a little after learning that your metabloism does slow down after you quit, but you can make up for that with just 20-30 minutes of cardio a day, which is easy to fit in with all the extra time you have now that you're not smoking all the time!

My quit date was 12-19-2009. Yes I did gain a little weight after I quit but mostly because I did not do anything to stay active. It was winter and I had just gone on my honeymoon (where I binged BIG time). I also used cigarettes as a coping tool instead of my emotional eating for a long time. When I stopped I ate when I was sad/angry/bored until I realized what I was doing. Now when I feel like I want a cigarette or to eat because of my emotions I go for a walk. Now I hate the smell of cigarettes. I had a couple after my quit date being out with people and after the last time I was so grossed out that I cant even be near it without my stomach turning. My clothes and car smell so much better- Now, that i dont smoke I can understand why I was told that my "me-scent" smells sweet- because it does!
Good luck with this! You can totally do it! Dont let it discourage you. Quitting is a process and once you get to a point where you find your happiness outside of it that little bit of weight wont matter because youll be able to do so much more healthy fun things without cigarettes (and lose weight doing it).

I am going to try on May 8, 2010. I am so terrified of gaining weight. I think if I keep with my healthy diet and exercise I'll continue to lose weight at the pace I have been. Has anyone ever gained weight while stopping smoking and not changing their eating/exercise habits?

June 30th. I've had a bad run with allergies this spring to the point that I think my allergies cause mild asthma. That's my wake up call that it's time to quit. The cig at 5pm didn't even taste right today. I know that my biggest hurdle will be the psychological need for the routine of a 5 min break that having a cig was. Going to try the nicotine patch to get through the cravings.

Thanks so much!! Yes even if I just don't gain that is a plus. I know that later on there will be time to lose the weight.

Good luck Lou! It's a huge step, and it's hard, but it's SO WORTH IT. I quit 2 weeks ago, and I'm already down to just 1 or 2 cravings a day. Exercise was the crutch I leaned on for those first few days. I even managed to lose a couple of pounds since I quit! (I was willing to call not gaining a success!)

It has been a month and my goal is to be off cigarettes completely by May 1. It is hard but my grandchildren live with me and they don't need the second hand smoke!

May 1st 2010! I don't want to smoke anymore! I joined the couch to 5K team and I'm starting that on the first as well...to help keep me focused on why I NEED and WANT to quit and stay smoke free!
