emoticon to the team, MARJIMAC63. I'm sorry to hear that you are still struggling with emotional eating. So many of this team struggle with this concept. What helped me was to use the H.A.L.T. practice. That is, before I eat anything I try to ask myself if I am Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. If the answer is Yes to any of the questions then I need to find something to do besides food. I find that this is a great time to try to squeeze in some exercise. Just try to find something that works for you!

When a psychiatrist told me that I was depressed, it was hard to believe it, because I felt that "this is the way it's always been" or at least that my emotional state has seemed to be the same since high school/college--an enormous burden of guilt/responsibility.

Counseling and medication over the last 4-5 years has definitely helped as has exercise, but I still wonder what "normal" feels like. Am I there? Or do I have more to go?

I joined SparkPeople because eating continues to be emotionally satisfying. Sometimes it feels like everything--I feel safe, happy, and loved....I deserve this because....this cake (pizza, bag of chips, you name it) doesn't judge me...

I need to lose weight for my health, both physical and mental.

emoticon to the team, DIZZYDICE aka Patricia. I'm so sorry to hear of your difficult past. Know the medication can be the same as a cast for a broken arm. It simply can allow the body to "rest and recover" for a period of time. Sometimes it it exactly what a person needs to be able to move forward into a new life. Yet this is a decision you and your doctor need to make together. In the meantime, feel free to lean on us during your difficult times.

Aloha,

My name is Piper Selden and I'm 44. I am married with two children and live in the state of Hawaii, on the Big Island. Might sound like paradise, but even people in Hawaii have anxiety and depression.

I have had anxiety issues, mostly due to a very busy life the past few years. I finished my BA late in life (English) and then continued with an MA (also English) and an MFA in Creative Writing. Two years ago I was accepted to the PhD program at my local university, but the university is not on my island, requiring me to take a plane to and fro several times a week. Stressful. I also have a 14 year old son with autism and an autoimmune disease (SLE Lupus). All said, I've been managing on my own for the most part.

And then my daughter was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. She was diagnosed a few days after her 11th birthday and within a few days, we had relocated to another state for her treatment. We lived at the Ronald McDonald House near Seattle Children's Hospital for a year and ten days, away from family and friends. We made new friends over time, but all within a highly emotional, stressful environment--a house full of critically ill children and their families.

My daughter had 6 different operations, the first to remove the tumor, along with most of her left femur. She received a donor bone and then started chemo. Each time she checked into the hospital, I went with her. She was so scared. So many sick and dying kids.

We're back home now, but have to travel back to Seattle every 3 months for follow-up scans. She has spots on her lungs, which isn't good. And I don't even want to discuss recidivism or the fact that treatment itself makes her highly susceptible to a secondary cancer within 5 years. She is only 12 and my heart breaks when I think too deeply about the reality in which I find myself.

I write for stress relief and "therapy." I kept an intermittent (as time and energy allowed) blog while we were in Seattle. My doctor recently put me on an anti-anxiety medication that has secondary help for depression. But I have to wait 4-6 weeks for full effect, according to the literature.

All this to say: I really appreciate this forum. I'm sorry that I over-shared, but appreciate a community of folks who also struggle with anxiety and depression. Knowing I'm not alone provides its own form of solace.

We return to Seattle for my daughter's 6 month scans at the end of this month. I'm dreading the trip: nervous, scared, and depressed to be back in the gray of Seattle, even if it's sunny. And that... in a rather LARGE nutshell, is my introduction.

PS: September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the gold ribbon. Go Gold for kids!

emoticon to the team, MERILEE5. Working the graveyard shift can be so challenging. The good news is that this team is here to help you along the way. If you haven't already seen them, there are a multitude of threads on the team page where you can ask for advice, motivation and support as you move forward on this journey to a healthier you. Try beginning by setting some small goals and work slowly work towards bigger, more challenging ones. Most importantly find some exercise that is FUN and you are more likely to stick with it.

emoticon to the team. DEBORAHDOWDAL. You are so not alone. Nearly everyone on this team has struggled with the motivation needed to start their exercise. A couple of tricks that have been mentioned are these: Sleep in your workout clothes so when the alarm goes off you are already dressed for exercise. If you aren't able to exercise in the morning due to work, have all your exercise clothes by the front door and do it as soon as you walk through the door. Remember even 10 minute sessions of exercise are beneficial so find what works for you.

Hi, I'm also new. Trying to get my life back on track while going through a divorce, and hoping that exercise and healthy eating can help keep my depression and anxiety at bay (especially since they tend to be worse in the fall and winter). I'm feeling optimistic about it right now!

emoticon to both Spark and this team, ADDY20 aka Addy. I'm so sorry to hear about your medical struggles and the weight that resulted from it. It must have been and still is a frustrating situation. Thankfully you have found this site. Set a few small, healthy goals to get you started. Then as they begin to replace your unhealthy habits, set a few more. Little by little, you will find that healthier you. While you are working towards your goals, don't forget to stay connected to your teams. There is a lot of support and motivation to be found on the threads. You are definitely NOT alone on this journey.

HI, so this is about my second day on the site. I hope that it helps me reach my weight goals, I will be 21 in October and I hope to have healthier habits by then. About a year ago I just started getting really sick, the doctors still don't know what it is exactly but I have been diagnosed with asthma, acid reflux, depression, anxiety, i have awful allergies, and I gained like 100 pounds in a matter of months. I seem to have my lungs and my allergies under control all thanks to various medicines so now I'm going for my weight.

Greetings everyone. I'm Karri, fairly new to SparkPeople (I signed up Monday night) but not new to dealing with depression. It's something I can hide from most people fairly well but some days it's definitely overwhelming. I'm also an emotional eater and tend to put a lot of pressure and stress on myself both in regards to my diet/workouts as well as life in general. For a long time I was in denial about the depression just saying oh it's a funk it'll pass or the feelings of being lost will go away. However that's not the case, don't get me wrong, some days are awesome, but then I also have days that I'm feeling super low. So yeah that's me, feel free to friend me on here as I'm looking to motivate and support whomever I can throughout this journey! We've all made steps to be here for our own reasons but we're in it together now. Sorry for the tangent! =)

If we haven't welcomed you, then emoticon to the team, IAMTOLOSE. The members here really care about helping each other succeed, offering support and hard earned tips. I too eat when upset. I've found that drinking club soda over ice helps me feel full, feel like I'm having something special, and helps me avoid eating something calorie-laden. It might work for you. Good luck and hang in there!

emoticon to the team, FOZZY2014. Emotional eating is such a big issue with many of your teammates. You are not alone in this battle. The good news is that we are here 24/7/365 to help you squash the urge to emotional eat. Just log on to SP and write a blog, read some articles, or respond to a thread. Any of these activities might help stop the urge and give you a healthy habit to replace the emotional eating. (Also if you don't know, there are Spark Teams that are solely dedicated to college students and the issues that you face.) If you need anything at all, please ask on any of our threads.

Welcome to the team. We are here for you. Any questions ask away?

I can relate to you as I have been depressed for most of my life. I shut my life off, I stay in the house and won't go anywhere except to go to the Drs.

Hi, I'm new to this team. I have battled with depression and anxiety from a very young age, but until recently have been able to control it. However, the last few months have been overbearing and I realize I resort to food to cope with my problems. I am looking for a way to change my lifestyle so that eating is not a self medicating process. I would really appreciate help and support, as it seems no one around me I have discussed this with can seem to identify with my problem. Thank you!

emoticon to both SP and the team, 3COLLEENA21 aka Colleen. You are right! Together we can become healthier individuals. One of the keys to success is staying connected and finding through others the motivation and support we need to put one foot in front of the other. Don't forget to ask for what you need along the way to that healthier you!

emoticon to SP and the team, MEGAN1359. You are so NOT alone. Many of us don't feel like getting out of bed much less exercising on some days. The good news is your SP teams are loaded with threads to participate in that offer motivation, support and care. Many times just relating with someone else who is in a similar situation is enough to jump start one's motivation. Feel free to join any of our threads as we support and motivate each other to a healthier us!
