PLease give us another chance. i was away from SP for a whlle so this team did not have an active leader...although some wonderful die-hards kept the chat thread going. Check in and speak up....II promise I'll try better to be around. So far I have a 76 day streak going so hopefully wiil be present more.

hi Julie
I sincerely apologize for missing your "getting to know you" post from last year. I had been away from Spark for awhile and although i was still officially the team leader, I only stopped in once in a while and usually on the chat thread. I hope you will come back and give us the opportunity to know you better.
Again, I'm really sorry. I'm trying to get things going here again but need some people to speak up so it's not just me talking to myself.

I hope your goals are being met here at Spark and that you have been seeing some results. Check out the thread NSVs (non-scale victories) and encourage us by posting .

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday? 49--June 1

4. What are your hobbies? Reading, writing, anything artistic, music--flute & saxophone

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): Married to Mr. VampBard; together, we have 6 kids: 24, 23, 21, 20, 17, 16. Three cats...but two are named Puck & Loki, so we get what we deserve.

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? Special education teacher, English teacher. Author/editor.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? Move every day--even when it's killing me. Track food & exercise.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Not wanting to be like this forever.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? stationery recumbant bike, elliptical when I can.

10. When were you diagnosed with RA? I was 19 when I was first diagnosed. Gold therapy & NSAIDS back then. In 2006, I went to a rheumatologist b/c I was out of remission from having & nursing my babies. He said I didn't have RA because I didn't have an RA factor. *laughs* My family doc started me on MTX in December 2016 while waiting for a rheumatology appt (which I didn't have until February '17). I also have Raynaud's Phenomenon, and maybe Fibro--my new rheumatologist will make a determination once my RA is controlled.

11. Which meds are you on? MTX--20mg injection currently. Just went off Mobic, and will start weaning off 5mg prednisone daily in a week or so. Not confident the MTX is working, but I'm done taking NSAIDS and steroids.

12. Which part of your body is typically the most painful? hand, wrists, knees, feet.

13. What works for you best in keeping the pain down? I try to take a bath every night with epsom salt and essential oils--hot as I can stand it--and it seems to take care of enough for me to get to sleep.

14. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you. I am a bestselling author who writes under a pen name because I'm also a teacher ;-) Mr. VampBard is my other half--he hates the fact that I'm in pain.

I'm here because 'normal' people don't know what it's like to have an autoimmune disorder.

4. What are your hobbies? Cooking, Playing Piano

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): widowed, 3 adult kids, 2 grandkids,1 dog, 2 kitties

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? I was a wife and mom for most of my adult life. I spent 7 years in the Air Force and was discharged after a back injury left me unable to do my job. Now I'm just taking care of the house and making new friends.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? I'm working to lose 100 pounds. I set my goals to be consistent with exercise as much as I'm able to do based on pain level. I track my food and exercise and try to stay within my goals.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Not really sure anymore. I guess I need to figure out what the rest of life is going to be like.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? Rowing, walking when I can, strength training with body weight and small dumbbells.

10. When were you diagnosed with RA? I've tested positive for RA for about 6 years but was only given a full diagnosis after my X-rays showed deterioration in my joints 1 year ago.

11. Which meds are you on? Leflunamide but it's not helping too much. Might need to go back to full strength which they lowered due to stomach problems.

12. Which part of your body is typically the most painful? Hips, feet, hands and shoulders

13. What works for you best in keeping the pain down? So far I have not had much luck with anything. I have a jacuzzi and even that isn't helping with the pain like it did 10 years ago. Hopefully getting some of this weight off my joints and getting my meds regulated will finally help with the pain.

14. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you. I've lived in Germany and Guam and moved 35 times. I'm an expert packer!! LOL I played for 32 weddings one summer sometimes 3 in one day. It was quite a fun time.....but busy learning all the new music for different couples.

1. What should we call you? Kelly

2. Where to you live? Northwest Arkansas

3. How old are you and, yes, please include birthday? 53, August 28

4. What are your hobbies? Computer games, jigsaw puzzles, I like word games, binge watching shows I like - huge fan of The Walking Dead - coloring.

5. Short bio: Been married for 28 years next month. We have a teenage son and one dog, a chipoo named Kozy. He was named after a chimpanzee from the Animal Planet tv show 'Escape to Chimp Eden'.

6. Job/Career: SAHM Used to write/edit for a small town newspaper and before that I worked at a larger newspaper. In between those, I was a word processor for WalMart Corp.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? I just want to get as healthy as I can. Took a lifetime to put this much weight on, I know it will take a long time to get it off. I tend to lose weight quite slowly and I know this. I've tried to lose weight many many many times before without much success but I'm trying again because I need it more than ever.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Number one is my family, I want to be here to grow old with my husband and see my son grow into the amazing man I know he is going to be. And I really want to do whatever I can to better my health as much as possible.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? I can not do much 'exercise' right now due to the pain in my hips and feet. I hope and pray for the day to come soon when I can go out and take a real walk.

10. When were you diagnosed with RA? Looking back I had symptoms for many years but kept being told it was something else but in 2013 the symptoms came back, worse than ever and never went away. I was officially diagnosed in 2014.

11. Which meds are you on? Methotrexate, Etodolac (anti-inflammatory) and I have recently begun Rituxan infusions. I've had the first 2 and am scheduled again in April. I've also tried Enbrel and Simponi Aria infusions but neither of them worked for me.

12. Which part of your body is typically the most painful? It's pretty much all over, all the time. Neck, shoulders, arms, hands, hips and feet. Occasionally my knees join in. Rheumatologist tells me my RA is very active and it's been difficult to find anything that works so now I am determined to work on the diet and see if that makes any difference.

13. What works for you best in keeping the pain down? Honestly, not much. My heating pad is very comforting, and I frequently use BioFreeze, pain meds, rest is about it. My pain level stays at about a 7 on the pain scale, the only time it seems to change is when it gets higher.

14. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you: I can't really think of anything 'special' right now, maybe I'll come back to this one later.

''I felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days the rain was unstoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

Yeah runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me

Runnin' down a dream'' .... Tom Petty

1. What should we call you?
Kate

2. Where do you live?
Pretty much the exact center of the US, for now

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday?
34, but I don't tell anyone my birthday ;)
UPDATE: I'm 35 now!

4. What are your hobbies?
Hobbies? What are those? Teasing. I love anything scientific, especially biology; good literature, writing, making art, being crafty (crocheting, sewing, cooking, etc.); anything outdoors, including digging in the dirt, hiking, camping; learning new things, and watching the universe unfold

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?):
I'm divorced after 10 years of marriage. No kids with my ex, thankfully. I want to be a mother very, very much though. I've been dating someone seriously for about a year now. I have a dog (age 11); also, my boyfriend and I added a kitty to our family (kitty is now about 18 months).

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day?
I'm a PhD candidate and research biologist. I spend my days doing research, writing, computer programming, and sometimes teaching. I will be finishing my phd in the next few months (finally).
UPDATE: Life is even crazier and I'm now doing even more teaching! Still trying to finish that PhD...

7. Have you set any short/long term goals?
My short term goals are to stick to my diet plan everyday, increase my daily exercise to 60 min total, and to keep on track to lose 100 pounds by Jan 1, 2018. That will put me half way to my ideal, healthy weight. I restarted this journey with 200 lbs to lose. It took me a couple months to get going, but I'm making solid progress now.
UPDATE: Reset, as of 8/21. I've totally fallen off the wagon (but didn't gain). I really want to drop at least 100 lbs to help my RA and other health issues. Plus, I want to raise children in the near future (even if they're not my bio kids). I want to be a healthy role model for them.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated?
I want to learn to love and respect my body. I want to be a mother, and as such I need to be as healthy and committed to myself as I can be so that I can teach my children by example how to love and respect themselves. I'm encouraged by my boyfriend and my father. I am inspired by my aunt who, despite RA and other even more serious health problems, has outlived her life expectancy by sheer will alone. She and I keep each other going.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week?
Swimming a couple days a week. I would like to make time to swim every day. I would also like to have more options for exercise I can do with my high pain and fatigue. I would like to keep adding chair and gentle exercise routines, try tai chi, yoga, and begin resistance band training. I currently can't hike or lift weights like I used to do just a couple years ago. It's not my weight stopping but my increase in pain over the past few years.

10. When were you diagnosed with RA?
December 2016, just a few weeks ago. It came as a shock. It wasn't the first time I'd been tested for it (the first was when I was 25), but I've always been seronegative. This time is no different. However, based on degeneration in my spine and symptoms, I've been diagnosed with RA or possibly ankylosing spondylitis. I have also developed what they think are rheumatoid nodules in both hands. I went in to have a hand specialist look at these painful nodules; that's how I ended up at the rheumatologist again. I've been referred to her twice in the past three years to "rule out" RA. This time she said she wasn't comfortable letting me wait and see what happens any longer, and she recommends I begin medication immediately. :/

11. Which meds are you on?
I don't know yet. She said it would be either hydroxychloroquinine or methotrexate. I currently take way too much naproxen.

UPDATE: Hydroxychloroquine was a no-go. I was only on it 2 months. I'm up to 15mg of MTX weekly (started at 10mg for 3 months). The goal is to go up to 20mg by the end of 2017. I still take way too much Naproxen. We should address this at some point.

12. Which part of your body is typically the most painful?
SPINE! Followed by hands/wrists, hips, shoulders, ankles/feet, occasionally knees

13. What works for you best in keeping the pain down?
No medications, including the narcotics I've tried, manage the pain sufficiently. I do take tons of naproxen to get through the day. I stay away from the stuff that makes me sleepy if I can. Instead, I focus on lifestyle changes; make sure I'm getting plenty of sleep, water, stretching; trying to do more gentle exercise. I keep heating pads everywhere too. I make sure I don't sit in one position too long because I'm always worst after being stationary awhile, as I'm sure you all can relate!

14. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you.
1. One of my greatest dreams is to through-hike the Appalachian Trail with my best friend, her two beautiful daughters, and hopefully my own children. 2. I was born with a physical disability that has impacted everything from what activities I can do to what careers I can choose -- yet I've managed to hide it incredibly well with only minor accommodation. As I have matured, I have worried less about the stigma of having it and more about fighting for equality for others with disabilities. Even so, most of my colleagues still have no idea what my life has been and is like; no one knows that I have periods when I can't dress myself or even walk. Sometimes I wonder what they would think if I suddenly exposed them to it?

My Meyers-Briggs personality type is INFP, but people I meet would assume I am an extrovert because I am very outgoing & talkative. But I need my alone/quiet time every day to feel like myself.
I would love to turn our yard (small at just over 1/4 acre) into a mini-homestead with chickens, lots of fruit trees, etc, but chickens aren't allowed in city limits and there are only so many things I can tend to, so for now my little garden has to suffice :)

Hello. I am Elle. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband of 29 years and my two adult daughters27/23. we have three dogs-all Boston Terriers and three shelter cats.

I am interested in all types of activities and hobbies. Currently, I am really enjoying adult coloring books. I use pencils, crayons, pastels, ink. It is creative and relaxing.

When my hands stiffen up, I just use a coloring app on my iPad.

I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome and raynaud's syndrome. I also have struggled with depression/anxiety.

I have finally decided-again-to take complete charge of my life and my body. I have returned to SP. I am moving more and working on improving my eating, my exercise and mental outlook.

I wish everyone health and happiness.

Keep the faith...
Never give up

I love going to see plays at our local Children's Theater seeing children's books come to life and seeing the reaction of the kids to their seeing their favorite books being acted out on stage!

What should we call you? Ronni

Where do you live? Sunnyvale California

How old are you? 53

What are your hobbies? Bead Craft, Paper Craft, sewing, cooking, gardening, reading, self-improvement, daydreaming

Short bio - Married just past our 17 years, Mother of 3 biological, 2 adoptive girls. Grandmother to 2 boys, 3 girls. Geekette/Nerdette, tomboy type with a twist.

Job/career - Been self-employed now since first of the year and it is not working out. Have been in High tech software development for over 25 years. Going back into the space but looking for the right place that has some Green/contributing to the betterment of the planet concepts.

Have you set short/long term goals? I need to get more weight off my hips. I have such a hard time walking and I don't want to become wheel chair bound. But I just am not making the progress, nor getting the stamina I want to get this off.

What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Right now, just knowing that I could end up in a wheel chair just doesn't sit right with me.

What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? Yoga, chair exercises, range of motion, Bowflex - all sparatic due to pain

When were you diagnosed with RA? 2005

What part of your body is typically the most painful? Hips, shoulders, fingers - spine.

What works best for you in keeping pain down? Rest, meds, yoga, stretching

List 2 things we would never know to ask about you? My husband is 10 inches shorter than me and 8 years younger than me. I am transgender (medical issues testosterone high, secondary characteristics) but decided to stay the physical gender I was born with. It makes for a very interesting headspace and I can honestly say I know what it is like to be either gender...(though it is hard sometimes. I clearly don't have a very female body - try as I would like)

Breathe - Live - Love
I am Imperfect and I am enough. I am worthy of love.

What should we call you? Nan or Nancy, I'll answer to either

Where do you live? In the SE part of London, UK

How old are you? 48 - 14/2

What are your hobbies? Reading, playing around on FB, and knitting

Short bio - I'm recently divorced, mother of 3 boys ages 9, 11, and 25

Job/career - I was a stay at home mum throughout the marriage, am now on disability for severe depression, anxiety and arthritic pain
A lifetime ago, I was a nurse and I have served as an energy (20 yrs)and shamanic healer(2 yrs).

Have you set short/long term goals? Complete training as a Soul Midwife, be in less pain, find and go to a local weight loss support group

What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Sometimes, sheer pigheadedness. Friends who held me up when I couldn't find my own strength.

What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? Right now, not a lot of anythng. I have too much pain and stiffness, and am driving 2 hours a day taking boys to and from school which doesnt help matters.

When were you diagnosed with RA? Originally, back in 1994 but there was a lot of faffing about in getting me the right sort of treatment because I have an atypical presentation - I've always shown up negative for RA factors in the blood and xrays dont show changes. The rheumatologist says it's sero-negative RA.

What part of your body is typically the most painful? Hands, wrists, fingers, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, head.

What works best for you in keeping pain down? Rest, moist heat, pain relief medication, gentle stretching, and I use energy shielding constantly to block my mind from feeling the pain (when I unblock in order to give my doctor a realistic pain level I find the pain levels unbearable, but can generally muddle through otherwise. It is quite exhausting though.)

List 2 things we would never know to ask about you? I am originally from Kansas. I find cooking relaxing.

1. What should we call you? Kit is fine. My real name is Patti.

2. Where are you from? Bloomington, Indiana

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday? 54...March 24, 1959

4. What are your hobbies? Reading, gardening, dancing (haven't done a lot of that in the past few years tho), making jewelry, crocheting, can my cats be a hobby???

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): Single, never been married. Lived with a guy for a few years, things just didn't work out. No kids, but I have some nieces and nephews that I love with all my heart. Pets...two crazy cats who are, at this moment, chasing each other up and down the stairs...Spooky is 7 years old and Scout (aka, Baby Goat) is 1 year old.

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? Job...Operations Manager for the Bloomington In Michaels Arts & Crafts store.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? Short term health goal...lose another 20 pounds by the end of the year, get back to exercising at least 4 days a week. Long term health goal...get below 200 pounds...that would have to help ease some of my pain. I also have a short term writing goal...complete 70,000 words in November's National Novel Writing Month. Long term writing goal...get at least one of my books published and out there for you all to read.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? I'm motivated when I set goals for myself and see myself making progress.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? I walk (right now I'm awfully slow) and alternate ST (upper body, lower body, core) daily. I also do range of motion exercises and stretching. Would love to get back to dancing...my true fitness love.

1. What should we call you? Kris

2. Where are you from? Springfield, MO now, but grew up in the Chicago area

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday? 48 -- July 23

4. What are your hobbies? working out, working around my house, singing in church choir

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): Divorced for almost 7 years, 4 kids (girls 22 and 20, boys 18 and 15), three cats (Levi, Artemus and Ebony)

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? Job - Project accountant for a construction general contractor full time; accountant for a construction subcontractor part-time

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? Short term - lose at least one pound per week. Long term - get weight back down to 175, which is where it was before my knee surgery 5 years ago

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? I've started dating, and whether I like it or not, men around my age want a woman who is thinner than I am now. And I want to BE thinner than I am now. Having to pin my waistbands because my pants are too big. People I see on a regular basis tell me they can tell I'm losing weight. Doing the weekly posting on our community board.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? I joined a gym and get up early to work out in the mornings before the boys get up: alternate strength and cardio 4-5 days a week, and "off" on Wednesdays and Sundays.

10. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you.

I used to be super-type-A competitive about most things in my life, but I have lost most of that motivation since my divorce. I'm slowly but surely regaining my self-confidence, and have learned to temper my competitiveness in most areas of my life.

Thanks Joanna! Good idea.

2. Where do you live? Arlington, MA, 8 miles from Boston

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday? 59, April 9

4. What are your hobbies? Painting in watercolor (my website brilliantgraphics.net www.brilliantgraphics.net has some of my work but hasn't been updated since about the time I got RA.) Sudoku puzzles, cooking, reading (book club at church.)

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): Married 27 years, one son, 16, with autism, learning disabilities, and such, two cats.

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? Used to design video graphics and animation before motherhood. Some logo design now, mostly paint and exhibit, sell paintings, note cards, etc.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? I've lost over 60 lbs, would like to lose at least 40 more. Am trying to get into New England Watercolor Society juried shows.

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? Thinking of the sheer weight... what I weighed before losing was like carrying 4.5 cinder blocks everywhere I went. Life would be easier with a couple fewer cinder blocks.

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? At the Y: tai chi class, lift weights, swim and do deep-water workout with intervals. At home: SparkPeople DVD, tai chi, dumbbells and therabands, Joel Harper workout, Zumba on my son's PlayStation. Outdoors: walk around local reservoir.

1. What should we call you? Erin, although I answer to Beautiful. ;)

2. Where do you live? small town in western Iowa

3. How old are you and yes, please include the birthday? I'm 34, my birthday is 12/2

4. What are your hobbies? reading, cooking, napping (does that count?). I love to write but don't have much time right now for it. I also am learning to play the piano.

5. Short bio (ie married, kids, pets?): Been married to Art for 13 years. He's the pastor of the Baptist church in our town. We have 3 kids-- two boys, one girl-- who I homeschool. They are 10, 8, and 4 at the moment, but we have birthdays coming soon!

6. Job/Career? or how you spend your day? Homeschooling is pretty much life right now, that and trying to keep up with the housework! I'm also active in our church working with the children and youth and playing the piano.

7. Have you set any short/long term goals? My ultimate goal is to lose about 20 more pounds. Right now my short-term goal is 165, which would put me at a healthy BMI. However, I'm sort of plateaued right now, so I'm working on appreciating non-scale victories. :)

8. What motivates you and keeps you motivated? new clothes. Shopping for a size 14 is so much easier than shopping for a size 18W, especially when you get most of your clothes at garage sales and thrift stores. LOL. Being stronger and having more endurance. Visible muscles in my arms and legs!

9. What do you do, exercise wise, in a typical week? I do a lot of Leslie Sansone videos. Her older ones especially are very low-impact. Sometimes I do other stuff. I also have been doing more strength training, using workouts from a girl on Tumblr whose user name over there is Back On Pointe. I can't do everything, because my wrists will not allow me to put weight on them for things like push-ups, but I am able to modify a lot of them in order to get my strength training in. I try to work out 5-6 days each week.

10. List 2 things we would never know to ask about you. I don't know. I don't think I'm a very mysterious person. LOL. I guess-- I'm a really bad housekeeper and also I can't keep plants alive to save my life.

Erin
