Hi everyone , My name is Margie and I am doing the Atkins or low carb. I try to keep my calories under 1400 also and eat lean meats, or fish. I find that on this program I do not get hungry and do not crave foods. I am retired from law enforcement as a 911 operator . I am a senior citizen and have 30 lbs to lose. My knees have been really telling me about my weight. So here I am and would like support . emoticon

Hey honey, just had a thought, with all the children you have - you sure are going to have numerous grand kiddies.
How will you ever remember all their names and birthdays? I'm hard put to it to remember all mine. emoticon

Hi there Sunflower Gammy, so loving your name and very happy you have joined our team.

I too found that cutting those foods out of my eating plan completely was a great way to lose weight and deal with assorted medical problems which I had when I joined Spark.
The plan I was on was for fibromyalgia, but also dealt with diabetes and BP problems as well. I was delighted. The other thing I let go of was caffeine, cant remember exactly why now - but it was part of the basic plan.

Loving these memories ladies. I have always been Nana and still am with the great-grandkids.
Had my first grand daughter when I was 40. Looking back it doesn't seem possible where all the years have gone. That was 34 years ago. I could be a great-great nana before very long. emoticon

Mine just turned 4... she is a total hoot! They say the 1st grandbaby names the grandparents.. it is totally true in our case. My husband was supposed to be Grumpy, and I was supposed to be Grammy. When my Granddaughter turned 2 she went on a road trip with us, and she was fussing and Grumpy, it sounded like she said Dumpy, he says I am Grumpy not Dumpy... well he is Dumpy now! lol

Hello! I am new to the group. Joined today 9-12-13 emoticon I have been overweight since the birth of my first child (70 lbs) second child (50 lbs) third child (no weight gain at all but was 300 lbs the day I found I was pregnant with him and 300 lbs the day i had him). Menopause has added another 40 lbs in addition I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and have been medically disabled since 2009/2010.
I decided to join this team because the only time I ever lost a significant amount of weight (lost 100 lbs) I was on a food addictions plan that was sugar, wheat and flour free but very low fat and my hair began to fall out so I will not be going as drastic with the fat but reducing carbs , eliminating sugar and wheat completely and weighing measuring my meals is my plan.

Breakfast: 1 serving each, fruit, dairy, protein, starch
Lunch and dinner: 1serving each, protein, starch, vegetable cooked, vegetable raw
Before bed: 1 fruit and 1 dairy
Fats: up to 3 servings per day but no less than 2 because I done want to go so low fat that I start to lose my hair again!

Please stop by my sparkpage and say hello,
Sunflowergammy emoticon

Hi there Michele, so pleased to have you join us.

I too got totally confused getting round this site when I first joined. Low carb is a great way to go. All that stuff you mention affects me in a 'not so good' way.

Great news that you are doing something about it before you regain all the weight you lost.

Look forward to getting to know you.

Hi I am Michele I just joined SparkPeople this week. I never had heard of it until I was reading someones blog (I don't remember who) I am 51 almost 52. Several years ago I lost almost 100 #'s, needless to say, after a lot of history I have gained about 45 of that back. I love to do lc, my body feels better when I don't eat a lot of sugar, flour and stuff like that. Of course I really LOVE to eat that stuff! I like to walk, and do weight lifting. I haven't done a lot of it recently because I hurt my knee, but am getting back on track with that. I just thought I would introduce myself. Bear with me I am learning how this website operates.

Hey Sandy so pleased you have come to join us on this team. I am so like you 4 years ago when I joined Spark. I started off with the regular spark planner, but the carbs just got to me. I too would happily live on them with no hassles. emoticon Guess that's why we are here.

I love Spark People and have made some really good friends. We all share our own tips, ups and downs etc.

Please feel free to jump in on any of the threads, I am thinking they may look a bit clique (good golly is that how you spell it), but we love having others join in. Some of us have been here for a long while, but the conversation is general, just hop in any time and you will be so welcome.

I too am eating a low carb plan of my own after all sorts of trial and error, and I do change from time to time to keep my metabolism on its toes. I personally do use sweetener, but many do not for health reasons and also because sometimes it sets up a craving. I do not have this problem with it and enjoy desserts, also I never feel deprived because I know I can have a faux fix lol any time I choose.

I have started exercising only recently. Two weeks ago in fact. I am 74 and was disabled, so my idea of exercise is regaining my balance - which is going well and walking about a 1000 steps a day.

Good luck and looking forward to getting to know you.

But the others do all sorts of different things. Also our range of carbs per day varies widely according to what each of us can handle and whether we are losing or maintaining.

You will fit right on in. There is a recipe section if you are interested.

Hello everyone, I joined SP with the idea of counting calories and of course, I ate almost all my calories in the form of carbs because they taste so good and they are really all I like to eat. I'm not much of a meat eater, but I love cheese, vegetables, and shellfish, so I will be okay. For my health and life I know I need to eat low carb. So I started LC last night. I know LC works if I stick with it.

My plan is my own based on books, internet, trial and error. In general, I will be 20-30 net carbs per day.

I look forward to getting to know all of you. Have a good day, Sandy

Hi there Beckie, I too found the standard eating plans or Spark did not work for me, but found a plan that did and I use it here.

Low carb is a great way to go. We are on several different plans here, so whatever one you are following, or not, :) its fine.

We all have one thing in common - we are doing variations on a low carb system and we are a friendly bunch. We will be very happy to have you join us. The monthly chat thread is where we tend to hang out most. But check out the threads and if you fancy any of them just post and it will bring it back up to the top.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hugs Wispy.

I'm an oldtimer with Sparkpeople from about ten years ago. I dropped out when the high carb route had the opposite intended effect (egads).

I'm into my second year of Wheat Belly, shifting to lower and lower carb to continue the good results and better health I've sustained. I'm interested in the new nutrition research (Taubes, Phinney & Volek, et. al.), relearning yoga (I think one is /always/ relearning yoga). Wondering if SparkPeople is going to be a good community for low-carbers like me.

Still learning the new interface here at SparkPeople. Wow, it's changed!

Thanks Wispy for the welcome.

As I have said in other posts here I am currently involved in three separate challenges here on SP. Two will end in less than a month and I will be able to devote more time to this. The bottom line for me is the more I move the more I lose. The more muscle I build the more I lose of fat. The better I eat in terms of good healthy nutritious food the easier the weight comes off. If that is a "plan" then that is mine.

I have discovered that when I do cardio (and I am doing chair aerobics) 4x a week for 30 minutes duration, I lose an average of 3.2 lbs per week. I weigh myself every day (and have for two years). I record it in a pocket calendar. I don't pay too much attention to it except the first and last day of the month. I have managed to lose around 8.4 lbs the months that I consistently work out.

So, it is just finding the energy to get that movement in: that is my objective now.

Pam

Hi there Pam and welcome to the Team. Happy 60th - you spring chicken you. emoticon

I too enjoy the low carb way of life for similar reasons. We are on several different eating plans here - all within in the low carb range.

I am 73 and finding it harder to lose these days so keep in a low carb range more to maintain, but I do have celebration days along the ways.

There are several recipe threads, I too enjoy cooking and look forward to getting to know you.

Hi all! emoticon

I just clicked on the Join this Team button a few minutes ago. I will be 60 on the 19th of this month. I discovered (by a visit to the eye doctor) that I was pre-diabetic in 2010. Since that time, I have been on again and off again with different kinds of food plans. It has only been recently with me being in the 8 week Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge here on SP, that I would like to give low carb a try again. Needless to say, I am all over the map on this one. I also have advanced arthritis and I noticed that by reducing my blood sugar (now 103 FBS) and by doing chair aerobics as well as strength workouts, my inflammation is a lot better. Yes, I too would love to get off the NSAIDS or should I say my stomach would love that!

My natural inclination is more protein, less carbs and at the top of fat for being "low fat". When I do that, I just plain "feel better'. I think you know what I mean.

I will check out your monthly daily threads and I look forward to trying some recipes since I love to cook (and eat!)

emoticon Debbie! I am diabetic also. Working hard on controlling my carbs! No pills. Only used insulin while pregnant. And hoping to get off of my blood pressure and cholesterol meds. I was under 20 carbs for a while but just did not feel good last week- too much stress. So I'm doing under 40 for now. And back to under 20 later.

Hello there Kelly and Debbie, nice to meet you and welcome to the team. Looking forward to getting to know you on the chat threads.
We have a new general chat each month, so it will be something with July in it soon. Up the top where the discussion threads are. Also there is a Daily record for May, which we never changed to June, but still post daily for those who enjoy doing that.

I have been on holiday and just not quite back to posting yet. :)

I am pre diabetic, or maybe diabetic, but not on pills yet thankfully and that is thanks to eating low carb/low cal I believe. Also got off bp pills which is a big relief as they did not agree with me at all.

Hi team members, I am Debbie and I have been diabetic for 4 yrs. insulin dependent for 3. I have made great stride in getting my blood sugar levels under control and have since achieved that and now I am working to devise a diet plan uniquely for myself. After years and years of dieting I have come to learn what works for me and what most definitely does not.
Eating less carbs and more lean protein helps me to lose and feel satisfied at the same time. So that is what I am working on under the care of my family doctor presently.

I wish you all much success and am delighted to be a part of this team and share in your journeys. Please visit my spark page and teams I lead: Laugh a Lot, Journey to a new You and Where the Spirit Leads as well as Sparking in Ohio!!!!
Your always Welcome.

Hello ladies. My name is Kelly, and I have to admit I am not 50...yet...but will be in December. Please don't kick me out!!! LOL I started a low carb diet in March 2012. I stuck with it really well and lost 30 pounds. Then during the winter I developed bronchitis and it kept reoccurring...with the steroids and other meds I was on I gained back about 10 pounds...got discouraged..and kind of lost my way with low carb eating. Although I didn't lose all my habits, many of the high carb foods found their way back into my diet. I have been using a low carb diet designed by a local nurse...she basically gives me a list of foods designed around what I like to eat and I follow the plan for the week. but...I sm looking for low carb recipes and support and wanted to try to do this without having tI go to the woman and pay her to tell me what to eat. I think I can do this on my own with a little support and some ideas for eating. My first week I basically ate meat, cheese, eggs, green beans, and green beans. I lost 8 pounds. After about four weeks the nurse, Anne, started adding new foods to my list. I continued to lose...about a pound a week...sometimes more...sometimes none, but the weight was coming off...and prior to low carb eating I was having at least 3 sugar drops a week...since eating low carb I have only had three...and it was because I ate only carbs for a meal! I now know that I cannot handle the amount of carbs I was eating and need to be low carb...for my weight loss and health. I look forward to getting to know you ladies on this team and getting the support and encouragement I need!

"June in Blessed Beauty Abides" is the chat thread for this month, it changes every month to a month related heading.... sorry I hadn't realised it was further down the list. We changed leaders of the team, and I guess the old thread is still on the sticky list which brings it up to the top. Koshie is our current leader. :)

I do not know much about Atkins as it is not my programme, but Koshie has been doing it for a long while, I am sure she will be happy to answer any questions. You could post that either on the June in Blessed Beauty Abides, or the May Record thread where she and I have been posting daily for the last several weeks. She checks in to both of those daily. :)

So pleased the fluid is going Nowyoudidit, it sure has helped with all my aches and pains as well.

Im off on holiday and will not be back till the middle or maybe end of next week. See you all then.

Bye bye for now.

Thank you for the introduction. Which is the chat thread? I looked but neither "Post your links here" and "What did you do today that is good for you?" seemed like a general chat. Also, do you have a link to a good introduction and explanation of Atkins program? I don't really want to buy a book and thought there may be something good online? Thanks emoticon

Hi there ladies, so happy to have you join the team.

On this team we use assorted versions of low carb that we have individually found helpful. As someone said on another thread. It is not a one size fits all.

Atkins I guess is the best known and is a good basic programme, especially the initial induction period.

I use an eating plan for fibromyalgia relief, which has also kept me off meds for pre-diabetes for the last two or three years and got me off BP pills. It is basic low carb as well, and I have described it on another thread.

Look forward to getting to know you all. Come and join us on the chat thread which is the very first one at the top of the General Discussion Section. Look forward to seeing you there.
Feel free to ask any questions and we will help if we can.

Hugs Wispy.

Hello
I am 60 year old and I have been a member of Spark for more than two years. When I started, I immediately reduced my weight by almost twenty pounds. Since then I have been "stuck" at the same numbers even though I have continued to eat healthy and track my food and I have exercised regularly 90% of the time. I believed that what I was doing was healthy, but I could not understand why I could not reach my goals. I recently went to a "weight loss doctor" who suggested that I reduce my carbs to less than 50 grams per day. I have not been tracking carbs at all, but I believe that my carb levels are relatively low. I am willing to go lower if it will help me reach my goals. So here I am. I have been doing research about the low carb lifestyle. I am looking forward to sharing and learning from this team. Ironically, the doctor I am seeing recommends SP to his patients.

Hello! I am 56 with PCOS and MS, now starting the icky menopause.
I have done LC for years due to my Insulin resistance. But I'd always quit.
This time I can't, my blood sugars are creeping up!
I had my last baby at 46 and had my now 9 yr old at 47. I want to see him turn 18! (when he was born my other birth kids were adults- ages 28,25,23, but we had adopted kids at home)

So this is it!
I love SP, I had been told about it for years but didn't check it out till this last May. It is great! I love my nutrition tracker- it beats a notebook!

Hello Everyone emoticon
I'm not off to a very good start, I posted my introduction in the wrong place (sorry) and now can't delete it so I decided to post again in the right place. I haven't been on a low carb (or any other "special") diet but have considered it since reading it was helpful to someone on my hypothyroid team. Since going through early menopause plus having my thyroid removed my metabolism is really slow and weight loss efforts have been pretty unsuccessful. My OB/GYN told me, "With your family and medical history weight loss will be very difficult, if not impossible." I've resisted extreme dietary changes though because my husband (who is not at all overweight) is a type 1 diabetic and I cook for both of us. My first husband died at age 48 from type 2 diabetes and Rod (my current husband) has his diabetes under very good control so I'm hesitant to "rock the boat" with his diet. I'm not even really sure what defines "low carb". I don't like sweet things so already don't eat any junk food or other things with a lot of sugar, I don't even like fruit because it tastes too sweet to me. I do like vegetables (especially salad) but vegetables are carbohydrates and I'm not giving those up. On the recommended Spark nutrition guidelines carbohydrates are what I have trouble getting the recommended number of. I use the nutrition tracker and my daily calories are usually between 1200 and 1300. At this point any help I can get I'll consider.

Hey Diane, that was my start off point too. My fruits were limited at that time to lemon and berries. Wishing you every success. It seemed to work very well for me, also with the blood pressure. :)

Hey there and welcome to the team. There are some of us on here who use flax and other alternatives. I mostly use oopsies (eggs and cream cheese) that turns out like bread products from Atkins basic plan.
Check out our main chat thread which was April showers, but will be changing to May something probably with the new month.

Others have lots of helpful advice on other substitutes they use.

I find that cornflour is OK and also rice flour. I use thinly shredded cabbage for pasta and grated cauliflower heads for rice.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi! Low carb or no carb? I am trying to maintain a 50 pound weight loss through which I normalized my blood sugar. Now I find I can't eat any type of grains. Anyone else out there in the same situation? Thankfully, veggies and fruits count as carbs. All advice is most welcome! I'm looking for ideas to put some variety in my diet without the usual rice, oatmeal, pasta, and bread.

Hey there Jilly so happy to meet you. I too am diabetic the same as you and Dakota and have found this way of eating is wonderful for keeping the meds at bay. My bloods and bp work out just fine and I am so happy for that. Although I do not eat a strict caveman plan these, it is how I started my journey in Sparks, not for diabetes but to deal with the pain of fibromyalgia. On my particular plan it was a very strict 3 months cleansing period, and I have really never looked back since then. After the first three months, each of us individually had to find how much of other foods like grain, lactose, sucrose and additives we could tolerate without activating the symptoms. It seems we all vary in what we can handle. I am so happy to have found Spark and this way of eating that suits me and I can live happily with. I have been maintaining now for about a year and know how to lose if I want to, but being free of the food obsession is far more important to me than anything else, so I can live and enjoy life in the way that I want to.

Hope to see you both on the April Showers thread. We start a new chat thread every month.

Jilly & Dakota, ain't LC GREAT?

Jilly, you've probably got a LOT of questions (or will when they pop up!). Be sure to post a new thread when that happens. Handing out on the Introduction thread won't typically get your questions answered. But it is a great place to meet "buddies"!

I just joined this Team, as I am definitely 50+ and definitely on Low Carb.
.

I also have been insulin dependent for 3 years.

On Monday I started on the Paleo Plan...... the caveman diet of real food only and no subs or additives of any kind, just veggies, fruit, meat, eggs, olive oil and in moderate portions. No sugar subs of any kind, the food fresh or raw and with no processing.

This is a radical way for me to eat, I have never even thought I could do this, but I was so sick and at my wits end and after 5 days of eating this way and no insulin today my blood sugar was 110, which is great for me. Its NEVER that good even with insulin.
So I am pretty happy today
I am very glad to be here!

Just for today ..... it really is one day at a time
