I'm David. I dig the Grateful Dead [so howdy to all you fellow heads out there].

My kidneys are out to kill me [poly-cystic kidney disease] and when I found out last august [or late july I think] I did some research and read that it'd be best to go on a mostly vegetarian diet. So since then I've been on and off it and eating better in general - since I got out of high school in 08 I lived mostly on fast food. The only thing I used to be able to cook up a mean grilled cheese [and I still do] and hamburger helper. Gross, right?

I try not to eat meat when I can. Occasionally I'll relapse - back in mid october through most of november some things happened and I was back on s*** food again and now when it happens it only lasts a day or two.

Since August I've come into even more reasons to not eat meat and these days because of some other changes in my life my will for it is even stronger for it.

I am getting my s*** together.

I am a compassionate vegan. Answering the sweets problem. Me too with the sweets but I find high protein and fruit helps. Try the greek or organic yogurt and frozen organic fruit and then I put fiber Splenda in and it taste like ice cream.

I did that in high school and I found out that the more veggies I ate and the less meat, I actually felt more healthy. Good luck.

I am Jenn. I am doing a "Vegetarian Experiment" for the duration of Lent. I would like to make sure I do it correctly and right. I have know too many vegetarians over the years that have really turned me off to ever trying out vegetarianism or made me think that I was already eating more veggies than they were, so what was the point in being a vegetarian? hah. IT was just painful and annoying to see vegetarians in my life eat only french fries, ice cream, fritos, etc... and refuse to eat most common and good veggies.

Anyways, I am doing this for health reasons, and hopefully I will keep the junkfood at bay as much as I can. I'm only on Day 3, so far so good at least on not eating meat, but did have pizza (with peppers and tomatoes, very yummy!) I hope I can get support here.

Thank you

Hi, I was a vegetarian years ago when Captain Carrot was doing classes in Sacramento, CA. My sister and I decided to stop eating animals. Raising a family quickly put a stop to that. But now as I am older and much wiser I decided to go back to being a compassionate vegan. I eat products of animals that are given to us by the animal. I walk through the store now and say to myself "ouch" when I look at meat. I grew up on a farm but it was a no kill farm. We ate eggs and milk but mostly fish and vegies. I am taking care of my 91 year old mom and we have 3 dogs. I really like to keep track of my food just to know how much protein and fats I am taking in. I need to lose about 20 lbs and am 61 years old. I have lost 20 lbs in the last year.

Hey!! I've been a vegetarian since I was 7 years old. I grew up in India so of course it's easier being a vegetarian there but now it is just my way of life. As I travel around the world I notice how much meat is part almost every meal for most people and I often get asked why I don't eat meat. A lot of people try to convince me to eat meat and say it is healthier but I realize that it has become so much a part of who I am that I do not want to betray that. Of course if I was stuck in a jungle and the only food around was meat I would eat it to stay alive. However, in this society I believe I do not need the meat (or fish) to sustain my health as long as I get the right amount of vit B, iron, and protein.

I believe my diet is quite healthy but I am alway looking for more ideas on how to make it even more healthy.

Hi everyone! I'm so happy to see this SparkTeam, and I'm very excited to interact with fellow vegetarians. I had been a vegetarian for about nine years when I started eating meat again about two years ago. When I became a vegetarian, it was for ethical reasons, and when I started eating meat again, it was a choice for my health. I was a poor vegetarian in that I didn't take the time to make sure my meals were balanced properly, and I suffered several health problems as a result. Anyway, I'm tired of feeling guilty about eating meat, so I'm back on the vegetarian wagon, and this time determined to do it properly. I've also recently gone lactose and gluten free due to intolerances, so I'm really struggling with creating a solid base of recipes, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello. I just joined SP a few days ago, have been a vegetarian for a year and a half, and am fully aware that my dietary downfalls are sweets and cheese. If it weren't for eggs and cheese, I would be vegan now. I have successfully cut everything else out of my diet and have been experimenting with batcIh cooking for the last six months or so. It has been working out well. If only I could stop baking! Short term goals are to reduce sweets and cheese to a few times a week and reduce eating out to only twice a week.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Lisa. I've officially started my Vegetarian/Vegan Lifestyle TODAY! Yeah! Every since I was little, I never liked the taste or texture of meat. Matter of fact, I didn't like looking at it. Once I got a older and in Middle School, I started looking into the Vegetarian Lifestyle. At the time, it wasn't right for me. Now, I'm in College. What really drew the final straw was this past Thanksgiving when my Mom was cleaning the Turkey and taking out the neck and things. Yuck!! She wanted me to rub the spices on the turkey before she placed it inside the pan. I got all squimish and said "NO!" I pretty much ate everything at the table for Thanksgiving except that Turkey and few other things. Also a few weeks later, my Dad was grilling Chicken Legs and other parts, I saw them before he place the marinades and things on them. I got all nauseated and such. I then started thinking how all animals were killed and the process of them turning into meat. I said to myself, "That does it! No more!". Unfortunately, that didn't last on. I was back to eating burgers and tacos.

Fast Forward to now, I was eating baked chicken, a steak sandwich and other things, and got really sick. I said to my family last night that starting tomorrow(Today: March 6th), I'm going Vegetarian if not Vegan. Most likely I will go Vegan. Because I haven't had Cow's Milk since October last year and I've never really like Eggs and Cheese. But really looking forward to trying new substitutions(soy cheese, yogurt, etc) I have a long way to go with my Weight Loss Journey.

Hey guys! I was raised a vegetarian, and now am mostly vegan--no dairy, just egg whites. Clearly new to SparkPeople, but enjoying the workability of the site a good bit. Interested in using this team to swap food ideas--am struggling to up the protein and lower the carbs. Only so much tofu one can eat, no? :)

Hi everyone,
I'm new to vegetarianism, I've been lacto-ovo-veggie for a month now. I must admit, my body already feels better, and everything tastes so clean to me.I have alot of weight to lose, so I also only eat whole wheat and avoid sugar as much as I can.I have many health issues, and this step is hopefully one step closer to a healing me!
I'm looking forward to reading the many things this team has to teach a newbie like myself :)

Hey Veggie, Vegan, Vegetarian team! I am joining this team today after reading the Eating Protein Without Meat article. I was not aware at the beginning of my joining the SparkPeople community that the veggie vegan vegetarian team existed; it was probably an oversite any way I really am happy I found this team I can truly relate here.

I have been Vegan for several years probably since childhood; I was born with a bad case of pnumonia and milk provokes this by increasing mucus. As a child, my Nananas never gave me milk, I was usually given more vegetables. As I grew and matured vegetables were my choice. We, my family and I, prepared and cooked meat and meat by products still I rarely consumed them, however, that might make a small difference. I enjoy the lifesyle and there is no adjusting to it for me. Currently, my adjustment is affording the meat protein that I have to have to keep my iron and hemeglobin at a healthy level.

Its good to meet all of you. I am sure I will fit in okdokey in this team.

Hey all,

I'm from Sweden but live in London. I've been a vegetarian for about 3 years now. I mainly started for health reasons and haven't really been ill at all since I gave up meat. Pretty neat.

Hi all
I am a lacto-ovo-veggie since Oct 2010 and it's been the best thing I could've done for my body. I used to get eczema everywhere and it has cleared up and I only have a bit left on my scalp, which beats my entire body.
Now I'm looking to give up dairy, but it's rather hard because I love cheese and I'm not sure about which replacement products we have in South Africa.
In the meantime, hope to lose 21kgs. Wish me luck!! I need all the support I can get :)

Hi Everyone,

I STARTED TODAY!!! I've been thinking about making this commitment for quite a while. My daughter told me she was going vegan, so I decided that we should to it together. I spent the weekend cooking meals so that I'm not tempted to stray. I also threw out meat and junk foods.

forget about tomorrow - right now is about a good a time as ever to start.

Hey everyone, I'm Danielle. I have been a vegetarian for almost 2 years. At first I was eating really healthy but then I got lazy with preparing such elaborate vegetarian dishes and fell into the lazy junk food category of vegetarianism. Now I am changing things around, looking for new recipes and healthier options (almost anything is healthier than mozzarella sticks and veggie burgers). I am looking forward to what I can learn and get from this team.

Hi everybody! Let's see... After my Italian Catholic Grandmother died in 1992, I gave up red meat for Lent in her honor (I'm not Catholic). I found I had much more energy! After I went back to it, I had a horrible dream regarding the way the cows are treated, in life and death, and decided that was not an energy I wanted to put in my body, nor was it a practice i wished to support.

Every year for Lent, I gave up another food. Most stuck:
'93 Chicken/poultry,
'94 Pork
'95 Seafood (I felt AWFUL during that period - My body needs seafood!),
'96 Dairy (Again, mostly just felt depressed! Decided my Italian blood needed cheese to function, so I stopped consuming milk and only eat ice cream on occasion in small doses, but I do eat cheese and yogurt.)

So, yeah, I'm an Ovo-Pesco-Vegetarian for personal health and environmental reasons.

Lately, I've been working on eliminating as many GMO foods as possible. Spirit save us from Montesanto!

Hi. I have been eating mainly raw fruits and veggies lately. Just a few days, I decided that I would intake whey protein shakes since I am working out and have not learned the ins and outs of vegetarian nutrition yet.

I know one thing. I don't crave doughy food like I once did. I was a really big rice eater and I have been getting full off of the raw string beans, salads and fruits that I have been eating.

Hi, all. I'm Lila. I'm not a vegetarian, by any means. I am a picky eater, however. A light bulb went off recently that most of what I eat are grains and veggies. I do love a good steak (but its not like you can eat that on a daily basis)! I have decided to slowly transition to a plant based diet. I don't drink or eat any dairy products, but I do love eggs. Right now, I'm going by Alicia Silverstone's book, the Kind Diet - I've tried some recipes and they're awesome!

I would love to completely jump off the occasional Steak and eggs bandwagon - so I'm excited for any new ideas and motivation from this group.

Hi there! I've been vegetarian for 22 years, currently vegan. Would love to share recipes, helpful hints, and updates on latest nutritional research.

Although I wouldn't mind shedding ~10lbs of chub, I love and accept my body as is. My focus is to improve strength, endurance, and flexibility for healthy aging, which includes a well balanced, nutritious plant based diet.

Hello to everyone - I read Kathy Freston's books recently because I've been thinking of changing to a plant-based way of eating for a long time and finally decided to try to do it. As she suggested, I'm slowly incorporating changes, see what I like, what will stick, and not trying to become vegan overnight. So my first change this week was buying Silk vanilla flavored soy milk instead of skim milk. Love it, so that's a keeper. And I can buy it in bulk at Costco. Well, happy to have joined this group and look forward to exchanging tips and ideas. - Donna

Just do it!

Hi everyone! I am new to SP and this team. I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 1 yr in college and I ate very terribly!! Anything that was fast & cheap. Well, I've decided to go back to being a vegetarian, but I now have the time to eat better. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a good website to find fast and easy recipes for lunch and dinner. I work so I need to pack a lunch and I get home at 6pm and I have to workout, so I need to make something fast for dinner. It's just me, so I don't need to make a big dinner. If anybody has any good recipes or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'm so glad I found this team to help me be a healthier vegetarian this time around. I am open to vegan recipes, too!!!

Take care all!

Hi everyone... I am a 33 year old mom of 2. My boys are 2 and 3 and keep me on the go. I have been a lacto-ovo-pesce vegetarian fro about 8 years now and love this choice. My husband is very much a carnivore but loves to grill so it works out for us. I just joined SP last week when I decided that it was time to really start trying to focus on not just my weight but my overall health. I want to my boys to have a healthy lifestyle and they need to learn it from me! It's nice to meet all of you!

I've been vegetarian since I was 17, but for a long time I was definitely the sort of vegetarian that ate more fried-potato than any other kind of vegetable. Looking for healthy ways to up my protein without *too* many beans!

I've been checking out SP for a couple of days now. I have been doing a diligent workout schedule for 26 days now, but I recently realized that I really need to track my food intake if I am going to get the results I am hoping for.

About me... I am a 35 year old Christian Mom of 2 girls and one step daughter. My husband is a carpenter/woodworker. I've been a lacto-ovo-vegetarian for over 11 years now. My daughters have never eaten meat or fast food aside from Subway. We live in the hills of New York. I have been pretty thin my whole life but metabolism seems to be changing a lot as I go through my thirties. This year, my pants have been strangely becoming tighter and tighter. I am determined to do what I need to so that I do not have to buy bigger pants or live in elastic waist skirts!

Aside from keeping the home and homeschooling, I have a huge passion for promoting Compassion International. We have 9 Compassion children in our family and they have changed us in ways I cannot even describe. It really weighs on me when I am gluttonous and some of our Compassion children are eating just one meal a day. You can read more about me at meeshimama.blogspot.com

I look forward to utilizing SP to reach my goals!

God bless,
Michelle

Hi Everyone. I'm Amy..new to sparkpeople. I converted to veganism about 5 months ago. Started low fat veganism around 2 months ago and have lost 23 lbs. I'm trying to lose another 30, but weight loss has slowed down....guess I'll have to finally add exercise. Hopefully this week I'll be starting a new position at my workplace that will give me more time to exercise in the morning and give me more days off. I also may be able to cut back on the hours at my 2nd job. :)

Hi everyone. I just joined sparkpeople earlier this week and haven't had a chance to post anything. I've been an on again off again vegetarian for several years and have flirted with veganism. I'm back on the veggie wagon and focusing more on vegan eating this time. Anyway, just wanted to say hi! Look forward to getting to know you all! :)

Hey! I am new here. I am 44 yrs old and some 65 lbs over-weight. I have been following a vegan diet since Jan 1 of this year. I am choosing the vegan lifestyle NOT to save animals, though I do love them dearly, but rather because of the health concerns I have been reading about for years. I don't believe the government/FDA's recomendations on what we need to eat to be healthy. I appriciate their studies but I think they have alterior motives for all they say and do. I truely belive in whole foods and their nutritious value for out bodies. I am struggling with coming BORED with the salads and veggies I have been eating. I fear failure simply because it has been a part of my life since I can remember. I always give in too temptaions! My biggest problem right now is that I still have to feed my BOYS (husband and 2 sons) with the standard American diet! They want the meat and fat and all the junk they can get! They allow me to follow my diet, yet don't understand that the temptations in the kitchen are making ME miserable! Yet if I remove them...they would be miserable. HELP! any feedback will be MUCH appriciated!

Hi all, I joined SparkPeople a couple weeks ago but haven't really gotten going yet. Sounds like I have a lot in common with Scarlett - I have been mostly vegetarian (still very occasionally eat fish), sometimes vegan, for 14 years and eat sugar far too often. My sister-in-law is on here and I found out about SparkPeople when she suggested some of the vegetarian recipes on the site to me. She is seeing wonderful success with her weight loss and health in general since joining SP, so I'm excited to do the same - if I can just get off my butt and get started. I purchased the book The Spark the other day and am excited to start reading it (hopefully today). I am ready for change and want to set a good life example for my children - I've been in really good shape before, and want to get there again and this time STAY there! The keeping it up is my difficulty.

Hi Folks! I just got on this site this week although I've been trying to lose weight for about a month now. I gained almost 30 pounds last semester on top of some extra weight from forever. My dog was ill with Cushing's and the stress and lack of sleep just make me inflate like an emergency dinghy! SO, now it's time to get on track and start paying more attention to what I eat, how I eat, and fitness. I can't wait to start getting to know everyone!

(Also, how do I get one of those cute weight tracker bars at the bottom?)

Hello All,

I started this journey last month. Let me put my cards out on the table and hope that you all will still welcome me with open arms . . . I am more of what you would call a flexitarian (actually I found out about this term via one of the articles here on sparkpeople) . . .The majority of my meals are vegetarian however, I will eat meat on rare ocassion if I know if is antibotic free, preservative free etc But I do not ever eat or drink dairy products .. . . I love almond milk and I can't wait to try tofutti!!!

I joined this group because via sparkpeople nutrition software I do not get enough protein and I need ideas of getting more into what I eat.

Thank you all for being so understanding . . . emoticon

Hi my name is Nataha and I just became a Vegetarian. I am working on my way to becoming Vegan by replacing milk with soy milk, yogurt with coconut milk yogurt and so on. I am doing it slowly because becoming Vegetrain and eating a bunch of whole grains and then putting Vegan on top of that would be just too difficult for me right now so I am taking things step by step.

I am 25 years old and I have been overweight for about 8 years now. I am ready to put my life back together though. Feel better about myself while helping the enviorment and helping little and big critters along the way. :)

There's few things you control in life, one thing you can control is what you eat and when you work out. I now have full control over that.
