My name is Antoinette. I became a vegan in August of last year in an attempt to control my pre-diabetes. I was really hoping to keep it from progressing to diabetes. But I cheated. Not because I missed meat but...some times things just looked good on tv or they sounded good when mentioned on a podcast. Then I would eat whatever it was and my stomach hurt. I'm not sure if it was my cheating or my cheating and sudden lack of exercise which progressed my diabetes. :-(

I want to add to this team (we have tons of recipes and cookbooks at home) and also gain support from the team. I look forward to interacting with so many of you.

Hi everyone. I'm new to sparkpeople - just started Sunday - and am loving it so far. As a classic yo-yo dieter, I am determined to step out of the "diet" mentality and begin making lifestyle changes instead.

I began drastically reducing my meat consumption after helping my teen do a research paper on factory farming. Since January of this year, I've basically been eating a lacto-ovo diet. I am allergic to soy, so tofu & most meat substitutes are not an option for me.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Wendy, I live in Tennessee, and I haven't had meat for 35 days now. My mom sent me a book and a DVD called the RAVE diet and it has totally changed my life. I am in the process of transitioning to a total vegan lifestyle, but right now I still eat cheese, use oil and eat some refined foods.

After reading the book and watching the DVD it was so easy to give up meat right away, and now I am experimenting with recipes and foods that I never thought about before and my body has totally reacted positively to this way of eating.

If I do decide to eat meat it will be on occasion and I will only eat grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and non-cured meats either ordered over the internet or purchased from whole foods. If anyone is interested RAVE stands for:
R - no refined foods
A - no animal foods
V - no vegetable oils
E - no exceptions and exercise

I just joined this group and hope to be educated further about the foods to eat to keep me healthy. I have about 70 pounds to lose and now that I have adopted this lifestyle I am not in a hurry and I know if done right, it'll take me a year or so to accomplish my goals.

Hi! I'm Mary. I've been vegetarian for a few days lol. Well I've been vegetarian since March 2nd for the most part with some meats here and there, until I found this!!! abcnews.go.com/Health/wireSto

This was the straw that broke the camels back. I have never been a big fan of meat to start with and always cut the chicken up into little pieces, being absolutely sure there were no veins, fat, skin, anything but white meat... I dont even want that anymore. I'm grossed out and done for good. I still eat fresh caught sustainable fish.

Its not just about weight, its about setting goals!

Hi, I am Kathleen. I live in Minneapolis. I have been vegetarian for about 6 years. I like the way Jenny_26 put it: I am really a carbitarian.

I just spent a few minutes looking at all the great resources here. I can tell I will use this information a lot as I work to improve my nutrition. Thanks to everyone who has contributed info.

Hopefully as I learn to be healthier, I can give back, too.

It's my 4th day on SparkPeople and I am so glad this group is here because it's been very, very tough to stick to my 1,200 calorie limit and get all the nutritional value I need..

With this group, I think I can do it!

Hello! I'm Lisa. I have been vegetarian/vegan/pescetarian for about 16 years off and on. I try to keep the diet at home vegan, but on occasion eat fish and dairy. I am very good with getting lots of raw and fresh fruit and veg in my diet, but struggling to lose the weight I'd like to lose. Hope to get some ideas from this group and using this site to monitor what I am truly taking in.

I'm also frustrated with Sparkpeople's algorithm for gauging carbs. I think as vegetarians/vegans eating fresh fruit and healthy grains like quinoa can put me over on my daily carb goal, but I think those foods are important for other nutrients and protein (the quinoa at least). Any thoughts on that?

Hello my name is Jenny, I'm 20 years old and have been a vegetarian for about 6 and half years! I became one because I love the animals emoticon . But until recently, I wasn't much of a vegetarian, a carbo-tarian is more like it! I really would like to broaden my horizons with vegetarian meals that nurture me mentally and physically! I'm sure I will learn a lot of valuable tips from you all :)

Hi! I have been (mostly) vegetarian for over 10 years because I love animals too much to eat them (or wear them). I guess I'm really a pesco-vegetarian because I occasionally eat fish, though I'd like to go back to being completely vegetarian someday. Here's hoping I find inspiration here!

Good morning all emoticon
My name's Crystal and I'm a new vegetarian. I decided to drop meat completely from my diet after Thanksgiving 2010 and really haven't missed it. I'm also incorporating other environmentally friendly habits into my lifestyle like purchasing animal-free shoes and I am about to embark on vermicomposting! My fiance is super supportive and even has his own meat-free days to show his support (though I don't think he'll ever give it up altogether). My only real problem with adjusting to vegetarianism is my heavy reliance on pasta and processed soy products. Eventually I want to dive into my new cookbook and really start making delicious raw and whole food meals.

I'm excited to have found this group emoticon

Hi All,

Well it's Monday and I always start on Monday. I have been an on again off again veggie for 35 years but this time it's been 6 years and I can't imagine ever eating animal protein again. I have also gained weight since switching over this time and I need to do something about it. I run two restaurants and the stress and easy access to good food makes it very hard to stick to a weight loss program. Am hoping this site and all the awesome people on it will help keep me on track.

How do I get one of those goal trackers on the bottom of my posts?

Hello everyone,
My name is Angel and my daughter and I are both vegetarians. We are trying to transition into the full Vegan lifestyle but that seems to be taking a bit longer than first planned. We do great at home but spend a long day out on the town and we give into the dairy possibly egg as well when using sald dressing not always sure what is in that stuff. We live on the Appalachian Trail in VA and love the outdoors. We have our own organic garden and do our best to recycle reuse. We make our own vegan body soap and clothes detergent as well as house hold cleaners. We make our own clothes (most of the time). We look forward to hearing all the ideas you all have to share.
Love and Peace,
Angel

Hi, everyone. My name is Stephanie and I am 32 years old and from Washington, DC. I'm here to learn how to lose weight without giving up my favorite foods - I may be one of the few vegetarians who actually gained weight when they gave up meat! :)

The reason i'm trying to lose weight is because I'm training for the Marine Corps Marathon this October, and my knees will be so unhappy if I try to run 26 miles while carrying around 30 extra pounds.

I feel like i've learned a lot already and am excited to chat with you guys about recipes and other great things about being a vegetarian.

Heya.

My name is Amanda, and I am 21 year old student from Vancouver. I've been a vegetarian for almost a year now, and am an on-off vegan (damn you, cheese!).

I'm pretty stoked on learning a bit more of this and that in this team, and on being able to share the few things I know (which mostly centre around delicious food...what a surprise).

All the best!

Hello - I am Alisson from New Jersey (the shore). I am 37 years old and a 22 year vegetarian. I am married with no children - unless you count my dog Casey (3YO black lab).

I consider myself to be a bit of a foodie and have been packing on a few extra pounds in the pursuit for good veg eats. I was previously very successful on Weight Watchers loosing 42 pounds. Since I have been off the WW wagon I have gained back half of what I lost.

While I am still at a healthy weight, I have come here to regain control before it goes too far. I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you as one of the keys to my success on WW was the supportive veg group on their message boards. Having people that are facing our unique concerns, sharing recipes, challenges, inspiration and support gave me a reason to log onto the website everyday... once on the site I would be more accountable for tracking my food and activities - win-win!

My name is Anita. I have been a vegetarian for about 4 years. My oldest two children (14 and 11) are also vegetarians. My youngest child (7) and my husband still eat meat but only rarely, usually if we go out. The rest of the time they are happy to eat the vegetarian meals that I make. Recently, I am addicted to lentils - they are so good and low calorie. My goal is to lose about 44 lbs, more would be nice.

Hi!
I've been a vegetarian for a little over a year and have no desire to eat animals~ cooked meat smells terrible to me now. I am currently in a town where my access to vegan alternatives is limited so my non-vegan foods consist of yogurt and cottage cheese for protein and the occasional chocolate. (And by occasional I mean daily). ; - )
However, I am working on eating more whole foods and getting rid of processed crud.

Good luck to everyone on their journeys at Sparkpeople!!

Hey, I'm Sarah and I'm 19 years old (almost 20). I'm hoping to develop healthier habits to bring home. Living in residence at University actually helped me make healthier choices food-wise. I'm also a vegetarian with a nut allergy making it slightly tough when choosing meals but easier to limit the amount of desserts I eat because I love my sweets! Going home for weekends were tough because there was no veggie option and less variety. My mom has been working on some vegetarian dishes for me because she's finally accepted my lifestyle choice to be a vegetarian. It's been almost a year now of being a vegetarian and I love it. It forces me to eat healthier and try new fruits and vegetables. So yeah, that's me. Looking forward to making new friends!

Hey there! I'm Jules & am wanting to go vegan. I was a vegetarian for 2.5 yrs a long time ago, then became vegan...but went back to meat during pregnancy. All these years later, my conscience is pricking me again re: factory farming.

My biggest challenge will be learning how to cook (my dh and I are divorcing & it was his forte, plus he was a major meat eater). My other huge challenge will be making vegan meals that my 2 teens will like. My son especially loves meat & is opposed to a vegan diet, but I don't think I can bear cooking it for him anymore.

I'll need to stay away from heavy soy use (hypothyroid), and I want to have a completely animal-free diet. Does anyone have any suggestions re: easy and tasty vegan meals that kids and meat eaters would like, that are low in soy use?

I know it sounds absurd, but I may end up giving my son the grocery $ to buy (and cook) his own meat if he should resist this diet. I don't want to shove my convictions down anyone's throat. My teen daughter seems more agreeable to this diet.

Thanks!
jules

Hey all, new here! I've been eating a vegetarian diet for a few months now. As a kid I was vegetarian for awhile, then I went to college and went crazy. In january I read Skinny Bitch, and that just changed me. So now I try hard to eat a more plant based diet, I've given up eggs but cheese in my weakness, though I only try to have it once a week, and eventually i'd like to focus on eliminating processed food completely! :)

hello fellow veg-heads! my name is kait. i've been a vegetarian since I was 8 years old - only one in my family, but they have always been very supportive cooking me separate meals and sneaking whey protein into my ice cream as a child just incase I wasn't getting enough. I was a Division II softball pitcher and miss being active. My weight loss goal is more about maintaining a healthy, less junkitarian diet and being as active as I was in college. I wouldn't hate having a six pack on the beach this summer either...I'm very excited about joining SparkPeople I think it is going to be a great tool!

I started out as Pescatarian at first. I ate monkfish and halibut. Pork was easy to quit, it really messes me up. Beef was harder though...I just told myself I don't need it. I am getting the same nutritional value from various analogues. Chicken was also hard becasue I also love cooking and want to be a professional chef. Chicken is one of the things I excel at preparing. I just concentrated that skill towards making vegetarian things. I quit fish eventually after a few months and was total ovo-lacto for 2 years. I just recently introduced fish and shellfish into my diet about 5 months ago. No problems. I started at 235 in 2009 and im at 170 now. It's easy to fall of the wagon...i did a few times. But you climb back on......hard work and determination.

I have been a vegetarian for about 3 weeks now and I really feel good. I do miss meat however, the way I have been feeling I am going to continue this journey.

Hello!

I've been on my weight loss journey for the last 7 years, but finally decided to put in actual effort this year to lose my last 24. I joined SparkPeople in Jan (again) and started using it in Feb. I've been ovo-lacto for the last 5 years or so. I hope to meet lots of amazing individuals for motivation and ideas.

Have a fabulous day!

HI! I am new to this program. Let me tell you about me.

For as long as I can remember, I have not been a very big fan of meat. Maybe it was because my parents weren't very good cooks, maybe it was my disgust of seeing the blood all over the raw meat or maybe it was the smell. In any case, meat has never been a favorite of mine. But, on occasion I can enjoy chicken, if cooked right.

My journey to vegetarianism has been slowly incorporated into my life for a while, but now, I want to embrace it fully. I want to wean off of some dairy products as well and feed off of more soy products and beans. I want to eat healthier and have a more balanced diet.

I am hoping that by making this change and trying new recipes I will not only be healthier, I will save money too. I think that my body is worth treating well and eating well.

Believe in what you are doing, let nothing stand in your way and make the impossible a reality.

Hello everyone, I am Larissa, 22 and I am just starting to explore the vegetarian lifestyle. I still do have meat here and there, and feel like seafood, may always be part of my diet, but I am trying to be successful on this journey. I hope meeting people who are like-minded. I have also recently started my weight loss journey. I feel I am psychologically ready at this point and that I am doing it for the right reasons.

My name is Greg. I am 55 and have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 37 years. It is a spiritual choice more than a nutritional one for me. It has had some real health benefits but maintaining weight has not been one of them for me. Over the past year I have lost about 60 pounds and want to lose another 70 for the next year. I am married with two sons, 17 and 22. We live in the midwest in a small town and I work in education. It is good to have people to chat with.

The past two days I have had a hard time getting enough calories in and I can tell in my exercise today that it is draining some energy. I don't want to eat empty calories. I rarely have days like this. Usually once I start eating in the evening I don't stop until I go to bed. Anyone else experienced this?

Hello Veggie-Spark friends!! :)

I'm a 27 year old female and I've been a ovo-lacto vegetarian for many years. I've never really balanced my meals so that is the main reason why I am currently unhealthy! This site is really helping with meal ideas but I figured being part of a group with the same lifestyle would be even better! ;)

Looking forward to sharing this life changing experience with all of you!

Cheers!

Hi! Welcome, Jennydom43! I'm also new (again), and looking for information on the very thing that interests you; how to find tasty, low-card vegetarian meals.

I'll be sure to join that thread when you start it; thanks for offering!

See you around, and good luck! emoticon

Hey!
I'm re-introducing myself to this forum...I've been a vegetarian for about 13 years...I have two kids and since the last one (now almost 4!!!) i've really been struggling with my weight...yo-yo-ing a bit, and in the last year have GAINED 15 lbs...so, here I am.

I thought i'd come back to good ole spark people and really try again this spring. I came back to this forum because i was recently looking into "low carb" diets for veggies...i read an article about "atkins" type of diet for veggies...i think i really eat TOO many carbs...i'll start a new topic on just this topic, but that's why i'm here :)

Thanks everyone!

Hi Everyone, I just joined SP. I was an on-again, off-again vegetarian for the past 12 years, but 5 months ago I went fully vegan after reading The Kind Diet and watching Earthlings. I love being on a vegan diet because I feel clean, light, and nourished, as well as feeling empowered to make choices I feel are better for the planet and my peace of mind.

Hello everyone! I'm going to try my hardest with my best intention to become a vegetarian. I thought I would jump right into being a vegan but that takes a lot of discipline. I have signed up for the 21 day intro on the PCRM site starting in April. I need to use discipline in my eating big time. So I already feel better about a gentler kinder life style. emoticon

Hey everyone! My name is Nicol and I am just starting to venture into the world of vegetarianism... I"ve been thinking about it for the past year or so and I have FINALLY made the decision to give it a try! I don't know anyone that is a vegetarian and I thought it would make things a little easier if I could surround myself in some way with people who are...

Hey all! Just wanted to introduce myself! I joined sp a couple months ago, but didn't really start using and taking advantage of it til last week. I am 24 years old. I became a vegetarian when I was 6 years old when I first learned about animal cruelty, and I have never looked back. I am also a type 1 diabetic, and everyone in my family has to eat gluten free... so meals are interesting around here at times.

I joined weight watchers in college, lost 20 lbs, then gained it all back plus some when I started nursing school, which despite everything i've been through, was the hardest time in my life. My starting weight this time around is 225 lbs.

Now, I have been an RN for a year and I want to get control of my life back. I want to be healthy and happy. I have discovered countless areas on sp that are incredibly motivating, and I hope to make a few friends on here despite the fact that I'm usually a bit of an introvert (but im better with writing then talking... obviously :)

Write me if you want a buddy! It's good for us to support each other through this!!

Hi All!

I'm brand new to sparkpeople as of today. I figure, what better day to start than the first day of spring?? I've been vegetarian for 6 years now, but I've always struggled with getting enough protein when I begin an exercise regimen. Right now I'm looking to shed a few pounds and tone up my lower half for summer. Last year was the first time I didn't go swimming once, and it made me really sad considering how much I love the water. I'm tired of waking up and feeling like every day might be the day I make a change for the better. I want today to be the last time I wake up wanting to change.

Any and all recipes (especially quick ones I can throw together after work!) are greatly appreciated. I'm always looking!

Best of luck to everyone here with their exercise and diet goals.

I have been a vegetarian for almost 2 yrs. I am excited to find spark people because it helps me have a structured plan of eating. I am proud to be here and glad about the inspiration I have been receiving.

Hi all,

I have been on SP for a while, but I recently quit eating meat. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I'm happy I've finally started down that path.

Hi, i'm Tea!
I was raised as a vegetarian from birth, but my parents allowed me to experiment with meat in my teenage years. I started eating poultry and fish largely due to peer pressure, since i was constantly teased about being vegetarian. After a couple of years i went back to being vegetarian again because i just could never get used to the fact that i was eating an animal. My mom did all the cooking at home, so i was very healthy, got a huge variety of fruits, veggies, beans legumes. Once i got married, my diet changed drastically. I had no idea how to properly cut and chop vegetables, much less how to cook them. I'm the type of person who has trouble boiling water. Since i was having so much trouble eating right, i ended up giving up and just buying and eating boxed pastas and rice with an occasional bagged salad.

Also, since i rarely cooked, my husband decided we should eat out/ get fast food instead of having me try to cook. So, i started eating chicken again, occasionally fish late in 2004. I never eat it at home, (i can't stand looking at raw meat) so i only eat it when eating out, in a form where i can't see it. That means i'm eating fried chicken or fish at least once a week. That has been the majority of my protein intake in the last 7 years, with an occasional peanut butter sandwich or veggie burger thrown in. My diet has been horrible, largely due to my laziness and ignorance about cooking which has led to a huge weight gain. I'm looking to change my eating habits now, and go back to being a proper vegetarian, instead of just a person who eats carbs all day. emoticon

I'm back on SP after a long absence...and I'm embarking on the "Vegetarian experiment" as well. I've had phases of vegetarianism for the past couple of years (more as a detox), but this is the first time I've considered it as a permanent change. It's only a week and a half, but I feel better already and don't miss meat at all. I think my approch this time has been a lot healthier and more sustainable than my past attempts. My husband and kids are all still meat eaters though with no desire to change, so I know it's going to be up to me to find new recipes. I'm looking forward to it!

Hi, I'm Chrissy and I'm 19.

Two years ago, I weighed 200lbs at 5'3". I wore a size 16 in jeans and a boy's large shirt size.Now I weigh 110lbs and am between a size 00-1 in jeans.
However, I'm getting married and have fallen into the stay and home fiance role while my fiance goes to school. I was 103, and have gained 7 lbs of pure body fat all over. I want to correct that before may 5th, my wedding date.

We have six cats, three rats and three fish, and are vegetarians.

Hola!
