Update: okay, good news, I'm finally loosing weight again! wooo hooo! Yep 9 lbs in 4 weeks, That all because I've cut out the wheat gluten in my diet, plus exercise, and also cutting out alot of the crappy foods that I used to eat because I was so stressed out at my Job (before Retirement) Yes It's possible to loose weight and be Hypothyroid too!

Hi I just recently been omitting Wheat out of my Diets... You will pretty much have to check out the Specialty food stores or I have found some gluten Free Breads called Udi's Gluten Free Foods at Kroger's but I'm sure they are in other Grocery store chains, Just look for the sections on Gluten free foods. I have lost so far 2 lbs in 1.5 weeks.

The key is always avoid the Processed Food isles!!!! stick to the Vegetables/Fruits, Lean Meat's and Diary isles. if you want to avoid Whole Wheat... make your own breads with alternatives like Oat flour, Almond flour, Coconut Flour, Rye flour. With the Rye flour you can add either Oat, coconut, Almond inplace of the Wheat as additional flour to your favoite Bread recipe.

Also, to avoid Processed foods is to avoid those isles in the Grocery stores, so avoid pre packaged dinners and also avoid those Frozen Dinners too! I used to live on that stuff, because it was so convienient. but now I buy either "Plain" Froze or Fresh veggies and steam them, And with froze Fruits, I use for Smoothies, I use the low Sugar brand of Apple juice of Mot's Tot's makes a wonderful low cal smoothie! Don't buy the Veggies that have any additional sauces (they often contain wheat) I buy lean Meats No skin, Chicken Breast and freeze them for meals later. I Bake them no "NO breading" Or I fry them in Good Oil's like Olive mostly, though I have tried Coconut oil, I perfer the Virgin Oil's as they have a better taste for my palate. All that along with my active lifestyle, no wonder I saw a jump in weight loss!

In the last year I've heard of alot of people have allergies to wheat. They feel so much better after getting wheat out of their diet. There's so many foods out there with wheat so can you tell me examples of what kind of bread we can eat,...Thanks so much.

Definitely keep ON your hypothyroid medicines. That is key to maintaining or losing weight with a thyroid issue. I went off my medicine and gained 20 pounds in three months. I can NEVER go off the medicine nor take it irregularly. That's the number one thing to do. Number two: to lose weight, stay between the calories that this sight recommends. Eat healthy foods and a bit of exercise helps also. I've gone back on my medicine and staying between my 1250 to 1550 calorie intake and have lost 8.5 pounds in four weeks. :-)

Thanks for the advice and I will certainly look for the Wheat Belly Book.
I know my stress is what is causing some of my weight gain. I am trying
hard to not stress so much. When I was happy, the weight used to come off.

YES it IS possible! I promise!!

I found out about my thryoid problem November of 2010. I had gained up to almost 190 at that point. Even after finally getting my thryoid meds optimized I still was only able to get down to 188/187. I hovered around those same two numbers for MONTHS. Even if I lost a couple lbs, within a week I was back up again. I exercised, ate right, drank water out the ying yang, etc. I couldn't maintain the loss. In August I quit drinking and was able to lose a few pounds that way. A few weeks ago, I read a book called Wheat Belly and eliminated wheat from my diet (don't knock it til you read it). I still eat potatoes, rice, etc here and there. Anyway, ever since starting that I have watch the scale inch down ever since. I also read Crack the Fat Loss Code by Wendy Chant who has some great approaches, as well.

So it is possible. I think you just have to find what your body needs. Not everyone is the same. So don't be discouraged...if something isn't working, try something new.

Hello everyone, My name is Dianna, I have had a thyroid condition (hypo) for 10 years now. My sister is 35 and has had it all of her life. Weight should not be a problem she has been thin most of her life. She started putting on the weight with the stress of twins. But she still was able to loose 50 lbs. She did it by watching her foods, and walking on the treadmill. So I know that it is possible.
I believe that if you stress about the weight it is harder to loose. Stress adds pounds. I also believe that if you believe that what you are doing is going to work the chances are better. But if you constantly believe what you are doing won't work, it won't. Believe in yourselves. Cut you some slack. My stress over my weight has made things so bad. I have gained more weight and I have stressed my adrenals so much that they are to point of exhaustion.
I have found that I can loose the weight. I believe this site will help me. One day at a time.
Hang in there dear friends it will come.

I am also hypo and have had half my thyroid ttaken out
in 2000. I have gone from 63 kilos to 90 and even with different
doses of thyroxine, cannot lose weight either.

We just have to keep trying and I think that stress is a big problem.
Since the beggining of the year I have tried extra hard and have
come down to 85.5 but it is so discouraging when nothing seems
to work.

All I can say is just keep eating healthy and exercising and make
sure you follow the doctor's advice. Hang in there and good luck.

I have been on levothyroxine for almost a year now and although we haven't reached the level we need to, I have not lost any weight. On the plus side, I haven't gained any more either. I too want to know that it is possible to lose weight with this condition because it gets to be very discouraging when you work out and watch what you eat and see no positive results.

all these stories are so encouraging to hear!! I was on a different hypothyroid team and asked the question of how much on average do you lose from week to week? you know I was just curious and a lady came back at me lecturing me on how I can't "do a survey" and expect to get the same results......uumm okay I was just curious and I know better than to compare myself with anyone else.I just know how hard it can be for us with hypothyroidism to lose the weight... anyways happy to hear some success stories, keep up the good work!!!

Saw this on a blog I just read and LOVED it!!!! I hope she doesn't mind that I "borrowed" it!!!

Well done. I just can't get the mindset to count calories but I have just started to track my food and have lost 5 kilos in 3 months and I am happy as I would rather lose slowly as there is less chance of gaining it back. emoticon

I have lost 70 pounds since starting to count calories January 31, 2009. I had tried drinking 8 or more cups of water a day and exercising but did not loose so finally bit the bullet. I have followed the calorie intake for my weight that SparkPeople recommends so my intake has gone down as I have lost.

Yes, it is possible.

So far I've lost just shy of 40lbs from when I started. It's been tough and has taken me a bit over a year and it juts seems soooo loooonng!
I do have a lower calorie diet (I try to stay between 1000-1200 a day) but am monitored by a Dr. I am trying to get better at exercising since I have only been losing about 2-3 lbs a month instead of my monthly goal of 4-5.

I'm currently yo-yoing too up and down the same 5 pounds. but I don't think I can blame the hypo. I keep going out of town for work or holiday and I can really tell when I go off my "normal" way of eating. If I could have the willpower to maintain that while traveling I could loose weight.

To loose weight with Hypothyroidism is that you really have to watch your over all daily Calories Try not to go below 1200 ( I have mine set between 1200 to 1500) Just make sure to keep actively fit with some cardio and Weight/strength workouts.

It's totally Impossible to eliminate Soy and those other Foods from your diet! If you do, you don't have anything healthy or nutritious left to eat!

I tried it, and my meals were so sicking "Bland" I couldn't stand it! Your body still needs the nutrients in those vegetables. Just limit them to 2 or 3 times a week, Avoid eating them RAW. all you need to do is be sure steam cook them fully before you eat them and It might be wise to take your Thyroid Meds in the Morning when You rise, wait 1 to 2 hours before consuming any foods.

If your PeriMenopausal or in Menopause, Actually Soy is very benefical for controling the Symptoms. But again, if your worried about it, eat or drink a Soy product in the afternoon.

Just remember, Don't get yourself to deep over the foods to avoid. It's not going to Kill you if you eat those "avoid" foods. I've been eating those all my life, sure I've gained weight and lost weight, but it had Nothing to do with eating those Foods.

It's all in controling your Cravings, Bad habits with too much of the High fatty foods, White sugar, white Flour (all your baked goods like Cake Brownies, cookies) will make you gain faster than eating the Grotogens. You have to change your eating life style. And if you can keep within limited daily Calories and lots of Exercise at least 60 minutes a day!!!!

Started losing weight when I eliminated SOY from my diet. There are also some fruits and vegetables to avoid or eliminate including but not limited to broccoli, caulifower, spinach, and carrots. Thry the book, the Hypothyroid Diet by Mar Shomom for better details. I have lost a total of 51 pounds since november 2008.

Not me yet. Up and down same pounds. Have been on meds almost 2 months now. Feeling much better. Takes nothing to make me feel full. I'm working on just feeling hungry and to get metabolism going. I too might need a medicne adjustment. It's very frustrating. It will happen, other members here are losing. We just need to get our thyroid right :) Deb

I would like to know if anyone out there is able to lose weight with this condition? I have been trying to for quite awhile and have only lost 2 pounds since Sept. I did just get my tsh and free T4 drawn the other day and my doc increased my levothyroxine.I just want someone to tell me that it is possible.I'll continue to work hard at it but I'm getting discouraged.I really don't have that much to lose but it is frustrating !!!
