I have secondary infertility due to hypothyroidism. It can impair your ability to have children, as well as harm the baby.

Hi,
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 5 years ago. About 2 years ago I decided to stop taking synthroid because I felt like it wasn't helping and I didn't have the extra money at the time to pay for a drug that didn't "feel" like it was working. I was gaining weight instead of losing. Well, Monday I saw my doctor because I was sick and she got on me about not being on synthroid. I am recently engaged and she said that if I don't get back on it ASAP then I could have trouble getting pregnant or if we do have a child and my TSH levels haven't been normal for long enough then that child could have mental issues. I just started taking synthroid again because that shocked me into it.... but... Has anyone heard of this problem or experienced it?? I didn't know if it was just a shock method my doctor was using on me or if it was for real?
