Hi everyone,
I left the Beck team for awhile (although I don't have a good reason) except that I thought I had too many teams going on and dropped a few.
I still practiced Beck principals as they never leave you once you made them a good habit.
I actually bought the book Beck Diet for Life and found that I missed all the good information this team provides.
Soooo, I hope you 't mind, but I am back again.

My daughter had been sick. I can't say it's the virus or not. She's not serious though.

I totally forgot tracking. I've been too involved reading and getting myself situation and taking notes of Beck and some other weight loss devotionals. Regardless, I'm setting myself for success. I'm creating meal plans, so I've been busy planning daily meals. I use the SP tracker to create a meal, and then write all the macros and calories both for the entire meal and individually. That way in the future, I don't even have to use the Sp tracker. I just have to select my own meal plan and I know exactly what I'm eating. A lot of work now, but it'll be easy later. I eat the same things anyway. I have the time now, so why not!

emoticon Carolyn!!

Susan, Hope you see you around a little. I'll be posting here!

Trina, I like that you are really trying to figure out a way to overcome challenges. You have the obstacle of hubby changing his mind last minute. In my case, hubby makes most of the meals and usually I donít know what he going to make until last minute. I really appreciate him cooking dinner (he started doing that when he retired), and I want to be careful to not sound like I am interfering. My best weeks are ones where I sit down with him and plan the menu for the week together. Then at least I know what to expect and can work around it.

Regarding another challenge, I will have poor internet for the rest of the summer, and it is difficult to check in on a regular basis. I am still doing the biggest loser challenge too and starting to feel like I want a break from challenges.

I'm really trying to get the Beck principles to work for me. Sometimes my DH changes his mind at the last minute what he wants to eat and that throws me off. So I'm writing meal options. This or that. Plus, I'll give myself the morning to plan before I eat. Sometimes you do have to make the principles work for you and your situation, otherwise discouragement sets in, and you give up completely. I totally get that Beck requires things kinda "set in stone" strict, and that's what I need, but I also need to make it work within my family dynamics. So for the dinner, I'll have 2 meal options planned or even 3 if I have to and go based on what my DH wants. Obviously, only choose 1 dinner, LOL. Besides my main problem is the eating around the dinner, not necessarily the dinner itself.

Yesterday was an off day. We've had sore throats and my daughter has been nauseous. Hopefully it isn't anything. Despite my diabetes, I'm the one in the family that's pretty healthy, immunity wise. My DH was really sick twice and I only had very minor things. My shoulder problem, but that's about it. Grateful for that!

Thank you Susan!! I'm really trying to get in the groove with this. Not just tracking, but doing the planned and unplanned eating. It's easier to track after you eat than for me to write out a plan.

Any thoughts of another challenge? I wouldn't mind continuing this one.

The Green Book is really an at your pace in stages. Going by days, I always felt rushed and a lot to soak in. This all slowly builds.

Interesting is creating an Advantage Deck. Each of your advantages is placed on a 3x5 card to create a deck as opposed to one card. I love how you write planned and unplanned food in a notebook that you carry with you. Plus, your have a memory box and a distraction box. I'm using 1 box for both, a recipe box to hold 3x5 cards.

I forgot I had Kindle on my PC, so I downloaded it and it's easy to see the charts. Plus, I took a screenshot on my phone and I'll write out in a 3x5 card the daily checklist for each stage. Can't move on to the next until 7 consecutive successful days. I really love this approach, and wish I would've gotten it earlier. Plus, overlooking the diet has a decent one. It may be high in calories, as the lowest is 1600, but as she said, that calorie level leaves people not yo-yoing with hunger and going of the diet.

The P90X fitness program calorie level doesn't go under 1800, so I may go with that and see my weight loss or drop it to 1600. I'm going to do doubles with both P90X and Body Beast. My shoulder is improved, so rather than lift heavy, I'll increase volume and do both. Plus, I need other cardio options besides walking.

Great job everyone in tracking!! I forgot to pay my tracking, but that's ok as I'm super excited with the Green Book!!

So far I'm REALLY liking the layout of the Green Book, Beck For Life. It has all the concepts, but instead of going day by day, it's set into stages, so you gradually learn the concepts.

For example, Stage 1 has you write on paper your planned food and unplanned food besides that. The difference is that you don't start with the amounts, just what you're going you eat. Stage 2 has you write the amounts based on your calorie level. The thing is that you can't go on to the next stage until you master all the tasks for 7 days. I like the daily approach, but at times felt overwhelmed. I know you can take it at your pace, but I really like the 5 stages approach! This is really exactly what I needed! I'm so glad I got the book.

As I get more into it, I'll start a thread in the Green Book for the 5 stages.

Amazing, thunder storms every single day this week. It's been in the 90's also, so I don't care. At least the vegetation won't be scorched.

I bought the Green Book, Beck Diet For Life. It was only 2.99 on Kindle. The actual book would be better since it has charts and stuff, but that's ok. I like that it's set into stages and you fill out a daily to do and adds more add you go along.

It's all about portion control and had a "formula" you follow for meals and pick from a list based on your daily calorie level.

You know, I have diet plans, but since I'm focusing on Beck and need portion control, I just may as well have it all in one spot. Certainly couldn't hurt, for just 2.99!

I'm reading and going over days 14 and 15. I desperately need to make these silks set in stone with me. Need to make these habits without even thinking twice about it.

Now I have all the Beck books. All on Kindle and 2 in hardcover, LOL

Trina, you are so right. It is amazing how much stinking thinking can keep you locked in your same patterns of emotional eating.

Iíve always used food to comfort, reward, distract, entertain, postpone doing something else, satisfy cravings....my biggest challenge is to change that thinking and find alternative ways to deal with emotions and think of food as fuel for my body, not as a drug for my brain.

Stormy the entire week here.

I haven't been prefect on the tracking, but working on it!

I have been reading a book, Food Triggers. I forgot her name. It is a Christian book, but I have never come across a book that explains WHY I'm overeating. I started overeating as a child soothing myself from my parents divorce and then again while in an abusive relationship, but I didn't realize the extent of my emotional eating and bad thinking that had kept me in a bad pattern. This book helped me to connect my thinking and my behavior throughout my life span. Pretty eye opening. Didn't realize just how stinking thinking can keep you "locked". Beck principles certainly help that, but I've had to identify and DEAL with those emotions. That's been the missing link.

Maria, Same here. I don't make progress unless I track. Need to get into the habit of tracking daily.

Susan, Thank you!! I've heard of Noom, but never really looked into it. For me, keeping protein and fiber high and calories are my key. Keeping it simple.

Trina, you are doing great with the tracking. Good job getting back to it after a busy time.

I went to the cottage Tuesday and just got back today and I could not get more than 1 bar internet service the whole week and that wasnít enough for me to connect to SparkPeople. So I tracked just by writing everything down, however I couldnít calculate the calories.

Have a good week everyone!

I am pulling out the pink book once again. I really need to make these things a habit -- they say it takes 66 days for something to become a habit. One thing about this program is that it changes the way you think -- as long as you take over what you think, Reminds me of a quote: "You go where your thoughts go"

Hey! Phew, long day. 12 hours babysitting! Sorry I've haven't been here. My daughter was sick. We didn't even go to church Sunday. Nothing catchy, but she gets migraines and abdominal migraines. Plus babysitting. I'm beat! I took 2 days off tracking, but I'm back at it!!

Miamrin, You track however works best for you! Even writing down somewhere what you're eating and amounts (even eyeballing portions) works! Make it work for you!

Susan, I still can't thank you enough! Working on making habits! I realize I can't do it all at once, but stack habits on top of each other.

Have a super Thursday!

Hi,
I'm having a very hard time tracking. I don't always cook for myself and have no idea how to track what is cooked for me. I think I may have to start from scratch like a Spark newbie.

TRACKING CHALLENGE

Anyone want to join us this week? Tracking can make a difference!

So far, Carolyn is in the lead with 3 out 5 days tracked. Everyone might not have posted yet. I did 5 out of 5, but I consider myself ineligible because I created the challenge and have more pressure on me to practice what I preach.

Trina, weíll have a Spark Party when you get to ONEderland!!!

In addition to tracking, my plan this week is to focus on tolerating the discomfort I experience when I try to resist an urge to eat that is not caused by hunger. Desire, craving...whatever...if I have an urge to eat but I am not physically hungry or I believe I am hungry but it hasnít been long enough since I last ate to actually be hungry, resisting that urge makes me edgy and tense and I struggle with that feeling that I really need something to eat, or I really deserve something to eat. I want to prove to myself that I can tolerate those feelings. I am hoping that the more often I can resist an urge by just letting myself feel those uncomfortable feelings until they dissipate that I will gain confidence and be able to develop the habit of successfully resisting. I found a sheet of star stickers in my granddaughtersí room at our house and I will give myself a star for every time I successfully resist. I couldnít find any devil stickers for the times I donít. Oh well, I should focus on the positive anyway.

I've been busy cleaning before babysitting on Saturday. With my recent shoulder issues, I've have forgone some cleaning.

BUT I've been tracking!! I've really needed to do this, but struggled to get into the groove. I've even discovered how to make easy chili for one meal to track instead of cooking one big pot. It's much easier to track that way!

I haven't gone over my daily list yet every day. Just focusing on the tracking as that is the most vital element (besides getting fitness in) for me.

Susan, I thank you SO MUCH for starting this!! Sticking to this challenge, I'll owe you a goodie, as you are a vital role in my success to get to ONEderland all these years. Perfect timing!!

Do you want to know a way to motivate yourself to track or to work on any other habit? I discovered how this week. Just post a challenge! Even though there were days this week when I didnít feel like tracking, I felt I had to because it would look bad if I created a challenge and then didnít do it myself.

My headache is getting better!

So, I wrote and printed out my diet plan(s). I have 2 plans that are similar. The main difference is counting carbs. If I see progress on the 1st plan, I'll stay with that one. I'd rather just focus on calorie cycling than calories and carb cycling. Makes it easier. Plus, both plans have phases that reflect reverse dieting. I start on the lower end of calories and end up slowly getting to maintenance calories at goal weight and then work on muscle gain. I took 3 plans and spliced them together.

Susan, As a leader, you can do as much or little a you want. It's just easier to do things like pinning chat threads and posting long responses on the wall and sending out team emails.

Exactly with the SP tracking. I've tried other places, and they don't compare to the SP. Plus, the SP recipe app syncs with your account, so whatever recipe you plug in appears in the recipes in the app or on the website, but I love both of the SP apps.

Gail, That's AWESOME!!

Trina, I hope your headache goes away soon....that is no fun. I didnít know about the Spark recipe app...sounds like a good idea. Thanks for mentioning it. Thanks for the Leader offer. I will let you know when I want to do that. Iím going to do a little research first to see what is involved.

I track using the Spark Nutrition Tracker. Most of the foods I eat are in my Favorites, and I have combinations in my Groupings. I really like the tracker because once you get your usual foods entered it doesnít take much time to track.

The past 2 days I've been under the weather. My son didn't feel well Monday. The past week of pet sitting a mini farm was a lot. I certainly had to deflate, LOL

Tracking didn't go to well yesterday. Really bad headache. Today is a better day, but still have the headache.

I'm downloading SP recipe app so I can plug in my combined "recipe" for soup or chili and get an estimate on what I'm eating. I don't use recipes, but the app is good at breaking down the calories and nutrients. Only bad part is determining serving size in the total dish unless you scoop out 1cup servings and see how many you get. But at least it's better than nothing. Unless I want to use a recipe and match it close. The app is still better than nothing since I'm tracking this way.

Waiting for my headache to go away.

Susan, Intuitive eating is definitely something I can't do. I don't even eat as much now for emotional reasons, but I'm so used to eating, that it feels natural just to eat! Intuitive eating has kept me in trouble. Can't do it. By the way, just let me know when you want to come on as leader. Would be happy to have you anytime!

Thatís great Gail! Good for you. Itís not easy to stay on track when isolating and your routine has changed.

I preplanned and tracked today and I had a very good day.

I know some of you use Intuitive Eating and donít track. It would be great if I could do that, but if I donít track I eat too much. My intuitiveness doesnít seem very good. Emotional eating gets me into trouble. I would like to someday be able to eat intuitively, so I am always interested in hearing Intuitive Eatersí suggestions as to how to get there.

TRACKING CHALLENGE

Did you miss the beginning because of the short notice?

This first week you can make up 2 days by tracking Saturday and Sunday this weekend, and count those as if you tracked Monday and Tuesday.

I am happy to see the participation emoticon

I am doing much better today. I have preplanned everything for today and I have that good feeling of being in control.

Tracking Challenge. I tracked today and it was definitely a reality check. I now realize that the tuna sandwich I have been having for lunch has way more calories than I thought, and those little snacks here and there add up, and I need to preplan my menu for the day. Today I did not preplan, I just tracked after I ate. Hubby cooks dinner most nights (lucky me!), but I often donít know what he is going to cook. Tonight was a high calorie dinner That put me way over my limit. If I were to check with him earlier in the day to find out what he plans to have, or help make the decision, then I can work my other meals around it. If I were to track my food before I ate it, I would have a chance to make a better choice.

Iím glad I am doing this challenge, because I obviously need to be more aware of my intake, and I need to take more control over planning my food.

Trina, thanks for offering to make me a leader. I will give it some consideration. I am usually at my cottage a lot in summer with poor, intermittent internet, so I think it is best I wait until the Fall.

It is good to review the To Do List and choose the ones you know you need to practice and you know are important to your success.

I am loving your commitment! Great attitude. It is not always easy to psyche yourself up, so give yourself credit.

emoticon Happy Monday! A great week for progress!

I'm starting fresh with my reading. Fresh commitment, starting anew. While the first half of this year was rough for me physically, I've made progress in other areas. Now, I'm starting fresh and really making this a priority to get to goal weight in a year.

Susan, Thank you! I took a lot at the end of the book from the To Do list. Especially the ones I know will have the biggest impact for progress. As I start this, I may add more along the way that are helpful or rewrite to make them more effective.

Great thinking in the tracking challenge!! I really need to track also. Maybe even until I get to goal weight or close to it. I don't think I'll have to track for years and years either, but at least until I have better control of myself and have learned to effectively meal plan and stick to it. Thank you so much for this and your involvement!! Would you like join as leader? If not that's ok, but please consider!

See Goals Forum - Tracking Challenge - July 2020.

I need to get back to tracking to make me more aware of what I am eating and help me control my eating. Sometimes I can fool myself into thinking I am staying within my calorie range, but it is easy to underestimate my portion size or forget about a snack or something,

I donít believe I will have to track for the rest of my life, just until I develop the habit of eating healthy, and maybe periodically if I feel I need it.

I would love to have others join in. I know this is last minute, sorry about that. I just thought of it tonight and decided why wait.

If we find this challenge helps, then maybe we can pick another habit for an August Challenge.

Trina, I am impressed with your post. You are really putting some thought into this. Your commitment will pay off! I also appreciate your Daily Tips. emoticon

Here are the questions I decided to ask myself daily to keep myself on track and accountable. The ARC cards and and planning my meals and serving size either the night before or in the morning after I weigh myself, are going to be key to my progress.

Daily Journal Questions:
I read my Advantages, NO CHOICE, It’s Not Okay, Get Back on Track, and Believe It! Response Cards as needed.

I read my other Response Cards as needed.

I wrote out a food plan for tomorrow.

I monitored everything I ate in writing right after I finished eating.

I did spontaneous exercise at every opportunity.

I did planned exercise.

What did I do today to avoid unplanned eating?

If I deviated, what happened?

What sabotaging thoughts did I have?

How did I answer back to those sabotaging thoughts?

What can I learn from this for next time?

I said, Oh, well, or NO CHOICE, whenever I wanted to eat something I wasn’t supposed to.

I responded effectively to thoughts and situations that get me emotional and discouraged to want to quit.

Reflections:

Susan, Yes, I miss her presence here. She is certainly a Beck testimonial. I mainly can on as a leader to post the Beck Diet tips on the wall. I don't want this team to go on the wayside, so I'll be as active as I can. I have my books and cards next to my living room chair, so I'll be reminded to check in pretty much daily. I need to make progress, so I'll be practicing the Beck principles! Doesn't matter of I have time or not. I need to make progress and I have to stick to my plan. Without Beck, it's slim if I do! My ARC cards are going with me wherever I go!

Happy 4th of July to our American members!

Trina, happy to hear from you! Iíve been sidetracked with Biggest Loser Challenge and havenít been checking in here as much, but try to keep up with reading posts.

Not as many posts in the check-in section, but still a lot actively blogging, which I like to read.

I agree about needing to get the team going in the right direction again. Really miss Kriszta! She was so good at keeping things going. Iíll give some thought as to what will help.

It would be good to get some input from our members as to what they think would motivate them.

Happy 4th of July for those that celebrate!

Hi! Welcome!

I am not good at checking in, I apologize! I'm surprised Kriszta hasn't been here either in awhile.

I keep letting life "get in the way" of reading and everything else. I can't let that happen anymore. I haven't done a good job practicing the Beck principles. I'm going to have to learn to be my own coach. I need someone to kick my butt, and tell it like it is, but that's going to have to be me. I admit, I've had a bad attitude about my eating habits as well as everything else regarding my health and fitness. I need to work on changing this.

I'm restarting reading and I'll be posting daily and checking in. Just to keep myself accountable.

I'll be back to posting the Daily Diet Tip on Monday also.

I'm going to write up a Daily check list with accountability questions. I'll post that either later today or Sunday.

Need to get this team going in the right direction again, too! Any ideas, I'm an ears!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

welcome!

My son got married the other day and we hiked to a waterfall for the wedding. there was 16 of is. it was the most beautiful wedding ever.
the hike was considered "moderate" and there was some scrambling over rocks and small creeks. we went slowly so my new daughter in laws mom could do it.
I did it with minimal effort and I had to slow down because I was forging ahead. I know its because I've lost so much weight and have gotten my health back on track.

This is the main reason I wanted to lose weight. so I could be healthier and do more things.
I am pleased with myself.

this gal was hiking with us. she's my new daughter in laws cousin and I was telling her that my main way to lose was portion control and changing what I eat and how I view food with cbt and beck diet solution.

Hi!

I'm new here, but not to CBT. I spend 3 weeks at the Mayo Clinic being treated with CBT and other therapies. It was life-changing. I have been improving mentally and physically ever since. One thing I gained from it is, "When you work it, it works for you". Simple, isn't it?

Anyway, I'm glad to be here. I hope to make some friendships, get healthier, and even have some fun!

Thanks!

Well, I'm feeling even better today. I'm doing what the book I just got on shoulder pain said to do, and I already see an improvement! What a relief!!

Getting back to my Beck reading!

Susan, Are you still reading? What day are you on if you are.

Annette, What a way to get you to slow down!! I've been guilty of that too. Especially with hard shell tacos. Scary, isn't it?! So glad you were not choking!!

Trina, Good luck in finding something healthy on that restaurant list.

So about 4 weeks ago, we ran out of our favorite bread (natures own 100% wheat bread) at the store because of covid and I had to buy some other wheat bread to replace it. I came home and ate my sandwich with my usual speed of eating. (I have been told by my husband, my mom and my sister that I eat to fast. The only people that probably could tell me this, as they are the closest to me. ) I knew I ate too fast, but on this particular day four weeks ago, this bread was dense. Real dense. I nearly choked. As normal for me, I took a larger than usual bite than other people take, I swallowed and I wasn't choking but it was stuck in my throat. It was in the right pipe, but the bread was dense and dry, causing me to say " am I choking???" I was not so I drank a little water and calmed down immediately. Because I am need a second maybe a third :-) reminder, I took another bite and it happened again. It hurt. So I slowed down my eating and took bites the size of a dice (about a square inch). Every time I took a bite, even small, this bread seemed to grab me by the throat literally. I found my other bread eventually and threw this loaf away. Now even when I take a bite with my other bread, I seem to choke slightly. This has forcefully caused to me to become aware of all breads now, to eat with smaller bites ( 1 inch) and slowly as eating fast seems to cause the same problem now for some reason.
I am done with fast eating and eating too large of bites. Pain unfortunately started this but fortunately has solved it!

Oh dear! My DH is a food pusher! He wants to go get take out. We never get take out. Just when I committed to tracking my calories! Never fails! emoticon I'm at an all time high weight too. Can I ever catch a break?! emoticon

Ps, it's at a restaurant down the street and they don't have nutrition values. Plus, it's very southern food: meaning deep fried!! Like fried chicken and waffles! Oh dear! emoticon

Susan, Thank you! My shoulder pain is at its all time worst, but at least it isn't all over pain like it was. It certainly is hard to work through pain. It's so easy to just lose focus. Regardless, this isn't going to be any better if I keep going in the wrong direction with my weight for my diabetes.

Well, I'm feeling somewhat better. And if course, my weight is even higher!!

I found some things that may help, so I'm giving it a shot with exercises to help my shoulder. Plus, I'm getting a rumble roller that should be here Friday.

I haven't been tracking food on SP. I am reading a book, Fat Loss Forever, and ice been bucking against tracking. If I want progress, I have to and stay in my range with a deficit. So, I now have my diet in place!

I should be here more regularly. I'm not sure what made me feel so awful, but I pray it doesn't return!!

that's a great idea. non food rewards.

I need to get back to my 1200 calorie days. I've been higher ... closer to 1500 for weeks now. A few lower and those are my non wine days where I then want butter on my popcorn days.

Sorry, these past 2 weeks, I've been feeling terrible. I'm in constant pain and it spread from my shoulders to neck and shoulder blades. I literally feel like a walking time bomb. It just hit me like a ton of bricks and got worse suddenly.
Hopefully this won't last. I pray it doesn't. I can't handle it now.

The_Fae, I start every day with good intentions too. I am only disciplined enough to keep off the weight I have already lost, but not enough to lose more. Plan A is to hope for a magic way to lose weight. Plan B is to keep checking in and keep practising the techniques, because I know if I donít I will go back to my old habits and put the weight back on.

Right now, I am working on building my resistance muscle. It was starting to get pretty weak, and I know the only way to make it stronger is to actually practice resisting. The more times I can successfully resist, the easier it will be.

I agree with the comment we check out instead of checking in when we are feeling out of control.

I am half heartedly reading my response cards, but I am. I am kind of tracking. I do track. I do plan my meals for the day and then I blow it at night with wine and popcorn (and the cookies my daughter baked). I could have been at 1200 calories, but I got 2 cookies. dang it.

I start my day with good intentions. and I know what I need to do. when my alert goes off to remind me, I am reminding myself that I need to focus on the long term health of not gaining weight.

the discipline I learned from this book/program is helping in many ways so I'm not totally out of control, but I'm not being as effective as I could be. this is why I am here right now.

this check in is good medicine for me.

Jean, good to hear from you! I think we all tend to ďcheck outĒ instead of ďcheck inĒ when our eating is out of control. The fact that you checked in shows you are ready to work on being in control. Good luck with your training to be a thin person. Each habit or negative thinking behaviour you change will get you a step closer.

I am very, very bad at keeping in touch, especially when my eating is out of control. Today I am supposed to find a Diet Coach. I think the most I can promise myself is to check in at least once on this thread each day, and go from there. I have read the pink book and can see how this is different from any other 'diets' because it is a way of learning to be a thin person. I'm training to be a thin person!

Trina, what a breakthrough! Congratulations! I am very happy for you. You have a great attitude. Wishing you success! I am on Crystal Tigers BLC. Team. I havenít done BLC before.

Iíve had a couple of lax days, sidetracked by other projects. Tracking, for me, is so important. If I donít track, I fool myself. I need that accountability. I should make it a rule that I must track ďbeforeĒ I have something. It might help me make a better choice.

I got behind a couple of days, so today is Day 8 Create Time and Energy. I should have read this chapter last night, instead of late morning. Iíve wasted time. I will plan my meals for the week, and place a grocery order online today. I have a schedule already.

Hey sorry about last week. It was so busy! But it was really great. My 20th anniversary was the best and my son had his 14th birthday as well. My DH and I got to do a lot of talking because he was taking a week long counseling class. He takes his final today. I figured out WHY I started using food to insulate my emotions as a kid and why I have continued to do so foot all these years. Those issues are now resolved. I feel healed. I'm sure Beck will be even better now. I can't believe after 40 years, I'm healed. I'm SO excited!!

Fae, Even with the little weight gain, it sounds 6 you have been doing really well!! I don't drink wine, but I have gotten that same attitude at night and I eat popcorn too. I love popcorn, but not always the best at the moment with my diabetes. I need to get that better controlled first. I'm scared to death getting that virus. I'm not sure I'd survive it if I got it. I always tend to get bronchitis for 2 months at least with the flu. I'm an ex smoker and I've inhaled lots of chemicals in college working in the chemical stockroom and stuff.

Susan, Wow, 51 years!!! That's very special!! Here I just had my 20th. I'm on 2 Biggest Loser challenges. I'm on CAMO and the Purple Phoenix team. Now since I have my biggest emotional eating issues resolved, I think it may be a little easier with that road block removed. At least I hope anyway. Obviously, I still have habits and emotions to overcome, but working on my mind to renew my thoughts will be easier. I can be more factual now instead of letting my emotions rule my eating. I think Beck works better on the factual part instead of the dealing with the emotional part. Although Beck Blue book does and works on creating escape plans for your emotions. After this reading, I'll read the Blue book.

I'll catch up writing out my past reading days.

The_Fae, I need to give wine a time-out. Yesterday, I had a small glass of wine and a small portion of munchies. I felt like I was controlling my portions. I was tracking the calories. But....wine gives me a relaxed attitude and I ended up having pie and ice cream after dinner. It doesnít take much wine for me to throw caution to the wind. Youíd think Iíd learn! So, no wine at all for me for the next 2 weeks. We will be celebrating my birthday and our 51st anniversary at end of May and I will be allowing a glass of wine for that, then will go back on a no wine diet.

Day 7: Arrange Your Environment.

I have some pie sitting on my kitchen counter that I have to get out of sight (hubby will want to eat it and he doesnít have weight issues, so I donít want to throw it out). Hubbyís snacks are in cupboards I donít usually go in, but sometimes I do, like to get the munchies to have with my wine, so I need to put a sign in there ďNot My FoodĒ to remind me. The wine bottle is going down to the basement today. Iíll put some fruit on my kitchen counter to make it more likely for me to reach for that. Iíll cut up some carrots and put them at the front of the shelf in my fridge, eye level.

I am so glad I picked up the laptop and log on here.

@suzyb, it sounds like your daughter had the virus. I hope that it's over with. I have had a few friends who've had it. It's horrible.

MY younger son is getting married in a few weeks. It's been in the plans for a year now. And the date is my parents' anniversary so it's very special.

They've made some changes. I need them to contact me for the details. But what I am understanding is that they are going to have a few folks meet and go hiking a few miles and then get married at a waterfall. I feel good with that ... but afterwards they are planning have a small barbecue/party in their back yard.
I feel okay with the hike and the ceremony in nature, but not sure how to do the party. I'm actually a bit anxious about that part.

I've gone up 1.5 pounds since this all began. I initially lost weight and now I'm up 1.5 from the lowest. So, wine is the issue. I drink it, empty calories. I eat toasted sourdough bread w pesto and then popcorn late at night because I'm relaxed from wine and have a small who cares attitude because of my apathy. I need to get over that. Yeah, I'm not over my calorie max allotment ... but I'm over my lower end calories and I'm not exercising enough to make it okay.

it's the calories from the wine ... and then that bread. I"m going to put my sourdough starter in the freezer. It needs a time out. LOL

I am a maker of things ... I make natural handmade soaps/body care, toxin free nail polish & botanical perfumes ... And a fiber artist who weaves textiles & spins yarn obsessively. Pack leader to 6 dogs, 1 cat & an assortment of humans.

Day 4 Give Yourself Credit

I start to do this but I only do it for 1 or 2 days and then forget. Today I gave myself credit for 9 good choices, and because I didnít make any bad choices I added that to my credits and got 10 today. I decided to tie giving credit to my twice daily walks and also to review my Advantages during my walks. Iím hoping that doing something that I want to do routinely but donít to something that I already do routinely will be helpful.

Calories today: 1157
Steps today: 10,295
Weight down 1 lb today.

I signed up on the waiting list for the Biggest Loser Summer Challenge that starts on June 1st. I know I will never be the ďbiggestĒ loser....Iím too much of a turtle in this game of losing weight! But I just felt like I wanted to take on a challenge. The waiting list for the summer challenge is on the Biggest Loser Spring Challenge Team site, if anyone wants to join.

Trina, thatís good that you are making things handy, yes it works! I have never had frozen fruit, but I think I will buy some to have on hand in case I run out of fresh. Now that I shop online and canít really browse and choose what I want, I sometimes have a shortage of fresh fruit and vegetables. Sometimes a fruit or vegetable that I ordered turns out not to be in stock but I donít find out until pickup day, so have to wait until I place my next order. And if I order too much, some goes bad before I eat it. So having some frozen fruit on hand would be good. What do you do with your frozen fruit? I was thinking of mixing it with my yogurt. I will check out Leslie Sansone in audio. Iíve watched the videos, but I think I would find the audio convenient.

I was on track today with 1210 calories and 11,638 steps.

Yes we can do it!

Day 3: eat sitting down. This is one technique that I have actually mastered. An easy day for me.

Susan, Thank you! Funny you mentioned the fruit. I fast, so I don't have a bunch of fresh, but frozen, so I don't waste as much. I'm waiting for my new freezer to arrive and I'm putting my foods in there so it's more accessible. Plus, I just arranged my counter to make my smoothies and shakes easier. Having things handy and in view makes it easier doesn't it! Plus, you're right, I do need to plan my meals at least the night before, if not sooner. I have Leslie Sansone walking in audio, so I listen rather than watch. Much more convenient and no excuse to get my walking in. It's easy exercise and I love hearing her anyway.

We can do it!

Day 2: Diet plan
I'm doing intermittent fasting and counting calories. Some days are 500 calories on fasting days, and up to 1900 on non-fasting days.

Trina, you sound determined to get healthy and in control. That is great. Fresh start! First priority, as you said, is to get healthy. So make sure you have healthy food in the house, and have it in sight if possible, on the kitchen counter, or prominent spot in fridge or cupboard. For example they say you will eat more fruit if you put the fruit in a spot that you walk past and in a place that is within armís reach. It works, Iíve tried it. I moved my fruit from the hanging fruit basket to the counter. Preplanning your meals for the day also helps. Once you are physically feeling better, you will be able to increase your exercise. Baby steps for now, you donít want to aggravate anything. I didnít carry through with group reading last time either, even though I committed to it at the beginning. I got distracted by everything else that was going on.

Day 2 choose 2 reasonable diets. Mine will be calorie counting 1100 to 1400 calories, and alternative will be Weight Watchers Green plan.

Happy Motherís Day, everyone!

Susan, That's a good idea to narrow down your advantages list. Right now, my main focus is feeling better. I have such pain from the tendonitis, it's awful. My health is very poor right now, except my immune system seems to be good. My husband was sick twice and I didn't get sick at all. Reversing my diabetes is number one!! Good thinking on the cookies too! I have to bake a cake for my son's 14 birthday this week. As much as I want to share with it, that just wouldn't be a good idea! My number one goal this week is to not eat it. A better gift to him is not eating is, right?!

I haven't read Day 1 yet, but I will today! I'll rewrite my advantage list too. I think I'll focus strictly on my health and what I'll miss out on. I need serious motivation to not eat things to make me feel worse in the long run. Right now, I can't allow certain foods. I just can't.

Hey! So yesterday, I tried using my computer as we just got Wi-Fi. I guess there's something wrong with the wiring. I live in a rural area, so ATT does not run fiber optic cable out here. I couldn't even hardly load up the SP page. It took forever. I do all my Sparking on the phone. What a bummer to spend all this money and cans even use my computer. I can use it to stream video on a phone I no longer use, but nothing on my computer. What a bummer!

I sprained my foot in March and I was in a boot for awhile and gained weight. Is was so easy to gain resting my foot every day. I gained 10 lbs. I wanted to really push myself during April with fitness, but now I'm starting at square one. Plus, I have a recurrence of bicep tendonitis that's really bad from my diabetes. So I need to focus on my eating.

I'm really trying to figure out how I feel physically when hungry and trying to distinguish between hunger and desire eating. That's really the key for me as I give into desire eating rather than to eat when my body needs nourishment.

Susan, So glad to have you join me!! I started the last reading, but didn't finish. So many things to deal with. I need lots of practice and reminders, or its just too easy to "fall off". Things need to be continually fresh in my mind, or I forget things easily. That's cold!! Brr!

Sukey, How scary for your daughter and you!! What a relief she's on the other side! I hope that clears up soon!

Have a great mothers day this Sunday!!

I re-read Day 1 today and re-wrote my Advantage Response Cards. My old list had over 30 advantages. I decided to narrow them down this time to the ones that make me feel the best, thinking that if the list is shorter I will read it more often.

Hubby baked chocolate chip cookies this week and I thought I was strong enough to avoid them, but they are sitting on a plate on the counter and I have found myself impulsively taking one now and then, and it showing up on the scale. So today I will put them in a container and put them out of sight in a high cupboard.

Thank you For your thoughtful wishes, Suzy.

Iím glad your daughter and her partner got through their brush with Covid-19. I hope your daughterís residue of shortness of breath clears up soon. That must have been scary for you.

Good to hear you are doing okay with eating and being aware of hunger and desire. That is so important.

I also live in an area where I can go for walks and maintain social distancing. I look forward to those walks now more than ever. Today was 28F, and snowing, and a neighbour called out ďMerry Christmas!Ē Ha, ha! Weird to have snow in May!

That is so thoughtful of you to do things to connect and support people who are less lucky, and to do work to address inequities.

You are a special person.

Thanks for posting.

Trina, good to hear from you! Thatís great that you are doing okay with the Covid thing and using the time to sort things out. A 4 lb loss is fantastic. I think I will join you in your re-read fathers Beck book. Iíve been realizing just how important it is that I develop habits that are important to me and reading the Beck book gets me practising, and practising is what I need to do.

Thanks for posting. Good luck!

Hello- Just want to say that I hope that people are safe and well in this scary period. My family is OK, although my daughter and her partner did have a brush with virus - probably could be considered a "moderate" case. She had quite a bit of trouble breathing for a few days. Fortunately the worse passed with a need to go on a ventilator and she is now on the other side (although interestingly with some residue of shortness of breath at times).

I've been doing pretty well with eating. Not really trying to lose weight, but have folded awareness of hunger and desire into a general commitment to daily meditation and mindfulness. Fortunately I am in a place where I can take daily walks and stay socially distant. I'm also trying to do some things to connect and support people who are less lucky. And, I am also trying to do some work to address the amount of inequity in our country.

Please take care of yourselves and keep the people you love in your heart - always.

Sukey

Susan, Yes, I've been AWOL! I've had SO many challenges to work through and one obstacle after another I just couldn't seem to mentally get past by myself. I'd do ok, and then something else would hit and take me rugs back to where I was. I think I'm finally past it. I'll certainly be posting here and hope others will too!

I've been getting back in the groove with things. This quarantine hasn't been a problem for me at all. Is had actually helped me work out some things, and I'm in a much better place!! Gratefull to give my health journey the priority it needs!!

I've lost 4 lbs this week! Restarting Beck (Pink) reading and making response cards this weekend! Lots of places I've found tidbits that I need to keep reminding myself about sticking to my plan.

Have a great Friday!

I bought 12 bottles of wine for a baby shower planned for March 22. Between Covid and Mom having baby 3 weeks early on March 21, the shower never happened. However there are only 7 bottles left. During self-isolation I was beginning to develop the habit of having a glass of wine before dinner...not a habit I can afford to have if I want to lose weight. I donít lose weight unless I get my calories down to to under 1200, so I canít afford wine calories. My resistance to snacks also seems to weaken when I have wine. Lately I have been having flavoured zero calorie sparkling water before dinner. Better choice.

Good for you, Fae, for staying mindful, and for counting your calories, and making better choices than your fantasies. If you like eating plants you should watch the movie The Game Changers on Netflix, an interesting movie about the benefits of plant-based diets. Your sourdough bread and turkey Reuben sandwich made me drool a little, my mind is having its own fantasy now!

I sometimes comment here and what I say is something I'd like to share in a blog post and I do a copy and paste.

I'm starting to reel it in a bit and get kind of back on track. I was drinking more wine than usual and that isn't healthy. so I've cut back. I did make 2 loaves of sourdough bread and then nommed it last night after having a turkey reuben sandwich and a chicken burrito yesterday. that's more grains than I usually do. I didn't totally blow my diet ... not how I used to eat.

I am still at the upper end of the range I prefer. Still trying 1200-1550 .... But I'm still more mindful even though I have fantasies of just binge cooking all the delicious indulgent foods. Instead, I go and make something else.
I also have fantasies of eating just plants because it's spring and the fresh bounty is happening.

Iíve been pretty consistent about tracking my food and exercise. I think I could cut back my calories by 200 a day and that might do the trick to start moving the scale in the right direction.

When self-isolation started I felt like I didnít want to waste my time or get bored, so I used a whiteboard to set up a schedule of things to do each day which included things that happen every day as well as any project want to work on. I check things off as I get them done. The next day I just have to erase my check marks and remove the non-daily items if I have done them and add in new non-daily items. I am finding it easy to manage and it is motivating me to get things done. One daily item is to clean and organize a drawer or closet. I canít believe how many spaces I have organized. When I retired I did not have any daily routine and often felt unproductive. Using my whiteboard checklist I am discovering that a routine is taking shape and certain things are becoming automatic. My morning walk just before lunch and afternoon walk just before dinner have become automatic. It feels easier to just go for the walk than to resist or put it off. When I get dressed, it is automatic now to clean the bathrooms. After I brush my teeth it is automatic to brush the dogís teeth. Every night before bed I put on the timer and spend 3 minutes tidying up. It is like one habit gets linked to the next. Like the TEDTalk on Tiny Habits. I like the way this routine is developing. I am getting more done. And feeling more productive and more in control helps me to be more in control of my eating and exercise.

I have been reading the posts, but havenít been posting myself. I find it hard to come up with something post-worthy lately. Maybe it is the Covid-19 worries and self-isolation and the seriousness of it all. How do I post something cheerful or funny when so many people are suffering? How do I complain about going off track or gaining a pound when it seems so trivial?

Our team has always been pretty good about being active with postings and I do miss that. I think it would be good if we could get back to that. Our support for each other is so important.

Personally, I have been staying on track for the most part and meeting my 10,000 step goal most days, but I am bouncing around in the same 3 lb range, and I need to figure out why I am stalled.

Is anyone else stalled, or gaining? Do you have any ideas as to how we can get the scale going in the right direction?

Does anyone have suggestions or ideas that have helped you that you think might help us?

Our lives have changed due to Covid-19. How are you coping? Have you found different ways of doing things, like exercising, shopping for groceries, meal planning? How are you coping with working from home, not working at all, having children at home, loneliness, missing family, anxiety?

Our mindset is so important to achieving our weight loss goals. Letís help each other and get back to the active team we used to be.

A funny story would be helpful too.

I check in, but I appear to be the main poster right now ... so I just end up not saying anything and going to my page.

I am struggling to not gain this hard won weight I lost back.
I have been eating a bit heavier since my daughter is home and lately not moving as much as I should. not good ...

It's that old I want to comfort my child so let me do this and that if that will make them happy. So, I'll do this and that. and it's usually food related. Last night it was a pizza. yeah I cut calories by not eating all the crust part, but I did make it more indulgent than I should have.

I know that is addressed in the book. Where we do something to please others and it doesn't help our own program. So, I am going to go back and read my responses and my notes and remind myself why eating less, watching how much alcohol I consume and moving more is important for me.

I guess C19 is upsetting things, since daily checking in doesn't seem to be happening! I hardly come here because I'm not aiming at weight loss. I did adjust my plan for health reasons and quarantine actually helped increase my resolve, plus used several Beck strategies that I also used to lose 40 lbs. years ago. I mean, if Anne Frank's family could do survive on so little food for two years... but I admit it's different when you're not forced. I have to harken back to my advantages list. I don't weigh except at the turn of the seasons these days, but I know pants are looser since mid-March. Just a side effect. I went grocery shopping for the first time in weeks and I could feel my jeans lower on my hips and the hem dragging. I can pull the waist of the jeans out pretty far, but I still love 'em. I'll wait until I can go back to the thrift shops before I consider replacing them.

Hang in there! I used to read my advantages list multiple times a day when I first started 10 years ago. When I would get tempted, one of them would often pop into my mind, and I would be able to hold out!

Seven years of maintaining a 20% weightloss and counting.

just blogged.

I am grateful for the skills I've learned from beck. I am really working on my mindfulness. I have had some slip ups ... drinking more wine than usual and indulging a bit with my daughters baked goodies ...
but I am still reading response cards and trying to pay attention to what I'm putting in my mouth.

I am not as together with it as I was pre pandemic, but this focus does help. I don't want to put this weight back on.

trying times. the only thing we can do is stay home and try to find a way to be as healthy as we can.
I am of a mind that we need to eat as lean and green and healthy as possible. add that to the advantage cards.
I'm glad that I don't get bored at home. my biz is slower, but I'm still working and making things. it does help. and I'm really working hard to heed the tools that I've learned from my readings and this group.

I apologise for not being here. Life has been nuts. I'm in a foot boot, and that has been super hard on me. My DH got laid off from work, and my babysitting is coming to an end. Interesting times we are in! I certainly don't mind staying at home! We just weren't expecting the lay off. We thought he would get transferred to another place, as he's a supervisor for a cleaning company.

I've been absolutely devastated that I haven't been able to follow my workout program with my foot. Exercise had become a stress reliever. I've been able to figure something out for exercise with sitting on an exercise ball.

Sue, I totally agree with Desire eating. I don't really have cravings at all, I just despite to eat. I don't even eat foods outside of what I normally eat, I just eat too much! Too much healthy food still doesn't give weight loss. Sometimes I'm not even eating for emotional reasons, I just want to eat because I desire to! How to nip this in the bud, I'm not sure yet for me. I'm certainly going to try and make some response cards for my desire eating.

Today I moved onto Day 19 Stop Fooling Yourself and it is perfect timing for me because last night we were invited to friend's home for dinner (with social distancing, of course) and my eating was far less than stellar! I have been writing out my menu plans and then going back and noting in red ink what I didn't follow as instructed in our D15 lesson. There is a lot of red showing! Out of 18 meals I have notations on 6 of them. Giving myself credit for the 2/3 win. This will give me a new kind of goal to work towards in the upcoming week - I want to see less red!

I am grateful that I found this beck solution. I am down 62 plus pounds and I initially wanted to lose 40. I am at the best healthy weight I should be. i think being at a healthy size and focusing on eating clean and healthy foods and moving will help me in the long run.

I am moving more, I eat less, I am finding other things to do when my brain tries to convince me to make unhealthy choices (not just food, but exercise or even having a second glass of wine).

emoticon Fae! We took a Road Trip today checking out a couple different towns I Florida. It was exhausting for me mentally - decisions, decisions, decisions! So I wanted to take a nap too, but pushed through it! emoticon

For two days now I have been leaving food behind at each meal until dinner last night. We had Fajitas with grilled Sirloin and Roasted Veggies over Brown Rice w/ Quinua. I had 2 Lite beers before dinner that I didn't have on my plan and I added Lite Sour Cream to the Fajitas which also wasn't planned. Then I had took seconds and cleaned my 0plate even though I noticed my fullness. Gotta mark this day as a "Most Of The Time" kind of day.

I did push myself to go for a walk after dinner with our dog while DH cleaned up the kitchen. And I resisted thoughts of night time TV snacking. I actually noted myself mentally reviewing if I was hungry, having desire, or cravings. Since I couldn't come up with anything I felt like eating I decided it was just a desire and put the thought out of my mind!

I did 30 minutes of stepping while watching outlander today. It's raining and so I wanted to nap. I decided that I had NO CHOICE but to exercise because my health is important.
I gave myself a pat on the back for taking care of me and doing what I needed to do.

I had some sabotaging thoughts yesterday afternoon. I really wanted to join my DH for a beer (or 2) outside on the patio, but I managed to stick with my water. And at dinner as I practiced the End Overeating task of leaving food on my plate I noticed thoughts about eating more. As a matter of fact, I did eat one more ravioli and then I caught myself and stood firm - No, Sue, you do not want to eat more!

Social Distancing and the Stay At Home directives are letting me feel calm, peaceful, and focused.

Good Morning!

I am moving through the pages a lot slower than the group. I miss being "in the now" with our review gang, but find that I need more than 1 day for information to sink in before I move on to cramming more information into my brain emoticon .

This approach finds me doing Day 17 (End Overeating) today. My first thought was "How is this any different than yesterday's lesson?", but as I read and reread the two I FINALLY got it! Day 16 is about making my Yes mean Yes and my No mean No with my meal planning. While Day 17 is about portion control.

Two different things and both that I need help with. I usually don't have any trouble coming up with a plan, but I frequently change that plan as the meal approaches. I did it at dinner last night - 5 shrimp won't be enough - add a bit of steak; the salad needs a bit more of something - add shredded parmesan, chopped celery, and red onion; a glass of white wine sounds good (and it was!). I will keep working on eliminating this pattern of adding to the plan I devised.

I have had to put the book up because I'm doing some last minute scrambling to make money as I feel like it's going to be worse before it's better. My markets are canceled and my gift stores are closed. I have 3-4 local gorcery stores which sell my items. I am delivering there when they order. I am not going in if I can help it.
I am home now for the next while. I work from home. I can ship. I can bring to customers cars.

I have lost 2.5 pounds .... it's interesting. I got chubby from eating too much and also stress eating. Now I am not stress eating. I actually was eating less (and that's a bit of stress and scrambling to get work done), but I do give credit to my new way of thinking.

I am still doing the beck principles for eating. I read my cards (just did for this am) and I'm sitting to eat. I am eating to point of mild fullness. I changed my definition of full. I have observed and made decision regarding wanting to eat vs needing to eat. And also I have had moments where I've said, this isn't an emergency I am not going to starve. I remind myself to move and that this is for my longevity and my health.

I have also put this way of thinking into place with respect to this whole pandemic. Cognitive behavior therapy really is good. i'ts helped to keep me calm and focused.

Kriszta, it is helping me too. I was starting to eat too fast and not tuning into when I was satisfied. Worries about the Coronavirus and my DIL (37 weeks pregnant, with complications) were distracting me. Yesterday I focused on mindful, slow eating, checking my hunger level frequently, stopping when satisfied and leaving food on the plate. Later in the evening I had a strong craving for frozen yogurt that was persisting, but I convinced myself I could tolerate the edginess and that it was not hunger and I could make it through the evening without eating...and I did successfully resist the craving.

This is the 9th time I'm reading the pink book, and this time it is super helpful.
Before I started, I fell back into habits of eating standing up and quickly, which lead to desire to eat between meals, even cravings, and overeating.
Now I'm happy to report I eat slowly and sitting down again, and after saying NO to cravings a few times they diminished, and I didn't have any in the past two days-
I'm so happy dieting is easy again, and I don't think of food between meals.
My Advantages Response Card is becoming true!

so, social distancing is happening. i have a home based business and have been shipping orders and have delivered the last few wholesale for a while ... maybe. not sure.
I make soap, so I hope folks will buy my soap during this time if they can spend money. I will continue to make and pack and ship.

I just got in from a good walk. I took one of my dogs and was walking her and used her as a spacer if I passed any one. and moved aside. got a good half hour in.

I've been not stress eating (and that's a good thing). I haven't stocked up on groceries I wouldn't normally eat. I am tracking my calories and moving more.

This pandemic is effecting every person on earth! I sure feel for those of us who are losing the income they need to survive. Every day the reality of this sinks in a bit more. I hope everyone can stay strong physically, mentally, and in spirit.

I am behind everyone in the lessons also. Moving at a slower pace. Did the skipping lunch exercise yesterday. Day 13 is about overcoming cravings. In the past I was unhappy that Beck doesn't do a better job of Overcoming Desire. From what I read it seems to me that a majority of us struggle with Desire (eating food because it is there) more than we do with Cravings (a hunger for something specific). I suppose we can use the techniques for both issues. Just wish she had spoken to the problem of Desire a bit more.

Fae - I hate it when I lose a Streak I have going! ! ! It is so upsetting to me when I do that is makes me wonder if I'm not better off without them. Shows us there can always be a new day!
