My turn to be upset that i did not follow my plan.(i had been so busy with work and work related issues that i did not do my planned exercise. And did not find the strength to do them in the evening after work. I was upset with myself and about to write about it here).

I had forgotten what i wrote on my last post. It applies to me as well.
Funny how I am kinder to others than to myself.....

I should just try to figure out how i can behave more constructively next time i am faced with this challenge.

Tomorrow is another day!

Sorry for the let down: when you wanted to have time to yourself and to meditate, you were not able to have it. So you turned to comfort food, (because you needed the comforting in the first place after a few busy days?). That is a real need and you wanted to take care of it.

As you know, there is no perfect meditation or meditator; you are doing well for yourself.

And today you are back on track! Yay you!!!

It IS impossible to ignore an unhappy cat. Poor thing, it wasn't her fault. This is why some people go on retreats: it's not just the setting, it's having a staff to take care of mundane things.

Last night I had a comfort eating episode: instead of waiting till my cooked beans and brown rice are ready, ate leftover tortellini on impulse. It was freshly cooked by DS... and some watermelon standing in the kitchen... blah.
I was upset over a silly thing: I had to twist my schedule around to meditate, and when I was in the middle of my sitting DH accidentally locked the cat in the corridor in from of my room. Poor thing didn't stop meowing... it was so annoying I had to interrupt my sitting which I was looking forward to. Meditation is about non-doing, non-clinging and accepting things how they are, and I apparently failed at it ; ) I got upset, angry and disappointed.
In my defense, is very hard stay passive and resist a desperately meowing cat, almost as hard as leaving a baby to cry.
But today is a new day and I got back on track.

Thanks, Kathleen, for your comments and suggestions.
No, this diet is not doctor recommended but is effective in reducing my allergies and arthritic pain, so i hesitate to let it go.
I guess i just have to bite the bullet and go back to preparing and freezing my meals for the week. It does help with temptation to impulse eating.

Hi Rachel. Your food limitations certainly do pose a challenge. Is your limited diet doctor recommended? If so, maybe your doc can also recommend a dietitician or nutritionist who can help you infuse some variety. It may be worth the investment (in time, and in co-pay/deductible) if it will help you stick to your healthy eating plan. Diet burn-out is a threat, for sure.

One thing I've found that helps me with planning is to cook ahead my lunch food for a week, and by that I mean I have basically the same meal every day for lunch for a week. Yup, a whole week. That reduces the number of decisions I have to make, and I'm usually not tired of that meal by the end of the week. Even if I am, I know I'll be switching it up soon.

Keep trying! I know you'll figure out a good solution.

I need help!!!!
i am on day 8, about the planning, and this also means planning ahead my meals.

I have been dieting for a year and my weight is very slowly going down.

My food choices are very limited due to health issues.
So basically, only chicken, fish, no gluten, dairy, sugars, nightshades.
And preferably cooking everything at a very low temperature.
Even though i have built a very nice recipe collection i am becoming very frustrated and yearn for more variety and choice in foods.
This is diet burn-out. But i cannot afford to not plan my food if i want to continue losing weight.

Has any of you met this type of situation, and how did you deal with it?

Atta girl, Rachel. That's exactly how the Beck approach works. We are free to see through the tricks our minds play on us to get to the true, good things.

So true, Kriszta. And to add to what you and Positive Hope are saying, the "i do not care attitude" is an excitement seeking response to some unease that we would like to forget about rather than face.(feelings of stress, emotions).

The " HALT" acronym used by AA (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Sad) is a way to remember to stop and try to understand what we are trying to avoid by seeking artificial excitement.
I know that it is easier said than done for me, but it helps me to write about it.

The feeling of "I don't care" is addictive. It can be perceived as freedom - but in my case it is just the opposite.
What is the "whatever I like" that do I eat when I just don't care? Food that is addictive and makes me want more, that is why it popped up in my mind when I was looking for some excitement.
The excitement and pleasure is always short and paler than what I expected.
The struggle and cravings that follow are longer and very unpleasant... doesn't feel like freedom at all!

The calmness and satisfaction after a good meal is a lot closer to my ideal of freedom.

Loved your statement, "the addictive feeling of abandon." Followed the road to where I abandoned myself to eating just what wanted. Saw the results and joined the journey. Yes, following only our hearts desire can easily become addictive.
Great insight.

Hello everyone,

I am at day 6 "find a diet coach" and this has prompted me to think about the ways i could be accountable and motivated. And posting here regularly is one of them.
So here it goes:
I am 69, semi-retired, challenged by arthritis, with at least 30 more pounds to lose.(another challenge is deciding what i want to do when I retire....)

So here is my victory for today:
After a year of dieting and following a gluten free diet that has been very helpful for reducing inflammatory pain, i was starting to feel really bored and eating food that was not healthy for me. And of course, the more of it I ate, the more I craved it. And today i was craving a particular BBQ chicken with the best french fries, and almost went to that restaurant for lunch.
And then I pictured myself tasting the food, and realizing that i really did not enjoy it that much. What i was craving was the addictive feeling of abandon that i would have when eating it. Same addiction as when I was smoking cigarettes; a sort of escape.

Actually i like and feel much better with healthy food.
So i got up and fixed myself a healthy tuna salad.

Looking forward to know you, fellow Beckers!
Be well.

Rachel

Heidi - I'm glad your PT is progressing so you can begin to get back to full strength.
Kirszta - way to go on dropping your mile pace. That's huge !!

School starts today in our community, so I will have to alter my route to work. I'm such a creature of habit, I think I might go the "wrong" way for a few days by accident.

Yes, fall is on its way. I've seen the sunrise the last several days, and there's just that feel in the air. The squirrels are going wild colledting food for the winter. I feel nostalgic.

Great news, congrats to the move and unpacking! It must be fun to have an almost fully functional kitchen again.

Fall is here... today was the first time I got home in dark (7:45 pm) and my travel time was 10 min longer too, school starts tomorrow and everybody is back from vacations. Another sign: in the morning I ran almost half min/mile faster than last week, thanks to cool weather.

Hi everyone! I survived the house buying, the move, the contractors, the unpacking, and the beginning of the new school year! Our kitchen is about 80% set up. We just got some cabinet organizers and plan to unpack the last 4 or 5 boxes this week. But as of last weekend, we've started cooking again, after two months of mostly eating take out, or ready made foods.

Best of all, my back survived all of this and, with a week of vacation at the Atlantic Ocean in the middle there and continued PT, has really turned a corner. Last weekend, with my PT's blessing, I did a careful version of a Jillian Michaels circuit training dvd.

Hi, how is everyone doing?

I have a day off today, will spend it with little niece and nephew and my grown up kids - either the zoo (again) or a small canopy trail park nearby.
I still eat cantaloupe in the evenings on top of my usual dinner, but not countless pieces standing in the kitchen. I measure 200 grams in a nice cup, and eat it sitting down at my desk with a dessert fork. Much better!

Good Morning!
I'm up early and looking forward to my day... I'm still working through day 16 of the Beck plan and I feeling like I just might be able to move on after today. Through this process, I am learning a lot about myself and hopefully making some lasting changes along the way.

Sharon, it's so good to hear from you!
Sounds like a difficult week, I hope your husband is well.

Mary, it is amazing you have your own apple tree, and garden grown apples... reminds me of my own grandma's garden.

My weekend was good, lots of family time (nearest and extended), leisure, workouts, meditation and a nap.
I batch cooked lentils and chick peas for next week.
We have a quiet night with my husband, DS at his gilrfriend, DD with friends.

Good Morning all!

It is a glorious day in New Mexico and even though the last couple of days have been a little shakey for me as far as my diet is concerned, I'm back in the game.

I have a beautiful little apple tree that gifted me with a couple of bushels of apples (so far), so I spent the ENTIRE day yesterday peeling, coring and canning apples. Then I juiced the peels and that turned out to be quite delicious. I was completely exhausted by days end. When I can, I take myself back to my grandmother's day and deeply appreciate all of her hard work on the farm just to keep her family going.

Good morning everyone!
It's been a hairy couple of weeks, but I feel like I can breathe again. DH has been in for extensive medical testing and they may have narrowed down the cause of his health issues. We've done some creative financing and I have a guy who's mowing the lawn now. Kriszta, I'll be emailing you later today to check in.
I hope you had a fantastic vacation!
Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.

A beautiful quote by Mark Twain...
"Compassion is language the deaf can hear and the blind can see."

I am convinced that in order to diet successfully, we need to have compassion for ourselves. Tomorrow, I jump into my full diet plan (day 15). I know from past experience that it might not always be smooth sailing, but if I can keep my sense of humor and compassion for my process, I WILL be successful.

I love Thich Nhat Hanh, he has so much to say about living a peaceful and happy life,
and specifically about mindful eating too.
My vacation weight gain is more stubborn that usual, but I'm holding on to my Beck skills, eat whole foods 3 times a day, in my normal maintenance range. I trust the process!

I read a beautiful, and fitting, quote this morning by Thich Nhat Hanh...

"Eating well is an art. It doesnt require fancy cooking, but it does require practice and concentration. Your body is not yours. It is a gift and a responsibility. To keep it healthy, we need to know how to eat."

Day 8...

The scales did NOT weigh in my favor this morning. I'm paying for my childish resistance from a couple of days ago. OK... Back on track!

Day 7 for me... I have a renewed sense of commitment. I found a lovely coach and I'm ready to give myself all the love and attention I deserve.

Holding your own while on vacation is always a victory in my mind. Like you, Kriszta, I have a vacation allowance and get back on track as soon as I am back to my normal routine.

This is so inspiring. Great that you could carry the healthy behavior on vacation with you! The one thing I've noticed so far using the Beck approach is a longer term perspective-- I'm weighing myself daily but much more focused on changing habits than the numbers on the scale. Before this, if I didn't see results (on the scale) fast-fast-fast I'd give up so easily.

Wow, congrats to both of you to your success, Jane and Susan!
You are making progress!

I'm back from vacation, it was beautiful and I was very active, lots of walking every day, plus yoga / swimming / running, whenever I had the chance.
I brought my Beck cards and completed my Beck checklist every day, it helped to stay on track.
I'm 3 pounds over my target, which is within 3%, and within the range I allow myself for vacations. emoticon I know I'll be back closer to target after a few days on my normal routine.

-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

Hi all and kudos to communityand support of healthy goals~
Back in action after being gone for five days. I prepared all food and didnt have any cravings although lack of variety was a little old. The last day I ate a burger on the way home but no fries and they looked pretty darn good....I used the mantra that I had worked hard and it wasn't worth it. Other than that one unplanned beer after a day of rafting and a lack luster scoop of icecream..ha!! All together I have lost 8 pounds in the 2 week period of starting Beck and have been off sugar completely....a miracle as I still certainly noticed the offerings when stopping to gas up, etc. My overconsumption of chocalate would usually have had me engulfing a few choices!

I am so thankful for this forum and am about to plan my food for the next few days! Congrats on the 15 pounds Jane--way to go!!! and Kbehnke81 the tea sounds great! Alrighty-- have made a fire and homemade soup for dinner on a rainy day so signing off......happy Friday to all!

Yeah Jane!!!!
I think weight loss is kind of like when kids are growing. They hold, hold, hold at one height/weight, then all of a sudden - blam!!! - growth spurt. So weight loss is maybe something like that in reverse. Hold, hold, hold, then - blam!!! - drop that stubborn pound and a couple more follow. I hope that's how it goes for you.

Enjoy your peaceful celebration of your Big Drop!!!

Oh, if you enjoy herbal tea, have you tried Celectial Seasonings Blueberry Tea? That would be a delicious, no-calorie reward for me.

Thanks to the two K's . . . Kriszta and Kathleen!
Kathleen, I really appreciate your encouragement. It was very down to earth and helpful. And positive!

SOOO . . . drum roll, please . . . I lost my 15th pound today. Finally! It has taken me over two weeks to get one new one gone . . . forever, I hope.

Kristza, you are barking up my tree! I was trying to think how to celebrate reaching this 5 pound goal. My growing up years included celebrations that were always about food. So hard to break with that tradition. Right now my funds are tight (just bought a new queen sized bed for Scott), so tried to think of a good way to celebrate. I decided that today I will allow myself to have one hour of time to myself to read in my current novel. I have a difficult time in the hub bub finding time for anything personal outside of taking a shower and combing my hair and brushing my teeth! So I will reward myself with reading time.

I'm excited that my next five pound goal will be at the 20 pound mark

Susan, sorry I missed you! Sounds like you did SO well with your food management. on your trip to the music festival. I will try to call you later today.

Hi friends, this is my last check in before vacation.
I don't take laptop so that I can't work ; )
will try to log in from DD's iPad but not sure...
I wish you all a great weekend!

Jane, that sounds like a lot of stress to deal with!
Take good care of yourself and try to steal some peaceful me-time, and try leave as much as possible to the men.Things to be managed tend to gravitate towards the Responsible Adult Female in the family, but that doesn't mean you have to do all!

Hey Jane, don't worry if you have to hover on Day 28 (or whereever you left off) for a little while as you get things in order at home. The book and the concepts will still be there when you get back to it. I'm sure you have SOME Beck techniques stored away in your memory. Do what you remember as best you can. And if you can't find your cards, make new ones. Who knows; maybe you'll come up with some additional responses that are helpful to you.

Remember, Kriszta posted a list of links to the individual days, so maybe check that out
and see if it helps you until you find your book.

Last week's binge day has now cost me an entire week. SO frustrating. This morning I finally got back to where I was last Wednesday. I am having a difficult time preplanning meals in all the current chaos. We have been working over the entire house to accommodate Scott's moving in with us. I get up in the morning and go until I drop about 11 or 12-midnight. And I'm doing all this while caring for the baby for the most part. I haven't touched my Beck book in over a week and feel so frustrated with myself . . . but not frustrated enough to eat a Klondike bar!

I need to make time today to read the next chapter. I can't even put my hands on my book or my cards right now. Part of the internal chaos involved deconstructing my home office and moving it to our bedroom. I'm slowly getting the boxes of my life unpacked and put back together. Hopefully it is isn't Freudian that I "misplaced" the entire Beck section of my life!

Hope hope hope to find that today!!

I had a nice peaceful weekend, just DH and myself. It was raining on and off, but managed to get my walk and run in.
This work week is only 3 days for me, on Thursday we are leaving for a 10-day vacation.

Today went very well for me. I'm still not using my cards like I should, but will get back to that tomorrow. We are in real upheaval at home with moving things all around to accommodate my son, so staying on my plan alone seemed Herculean. I need to find time in the chaos that this weekend promises to hold to read another Beck chapter and review my cards. Fingers crossed.

My computer has behaved today without shutting down at all. I hope I have time tonight to at least plan tomorrow's meals. That is my primary focus today. I won't have time to read blogs etc. and I really-really miss those when I get behind.

So onward to my planning . . . see you tomorrow.

Susan, congrats to your successful End Overeating exercise!
Empowering experience, isn't it?
It was life changing for me. In fact, I'm still a notorious plate cleaner, but I counter strike by making sure I only put my portion on the plate, nothing more ; ) I rarely eat out, but at those times it is good to know I can portion off the extra food and take home for another meal. I hate to waste food, so this was always difficult for me.

Jane, I admire your ability to get back on track after a slip up, and your staying within range despite thinking about food a lot during the day. One day of that is harder than following a plan for 100 years, really!
I'm glad pre-planning for tomorrow took the pressure off you.
