-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

My advantages for losing weight are many and I'm in the process of sorting them from high significance to lower. But I have to tell you, I recently had my Driver's License picture taken and I was horrified. Now I know that most license pictures are in the poor to okay range, but this really set me back. My inner picture of self doesn't always jive with the 'real' image and I wonder why. Topic for another time.

As an aside I love revisiting the resistance muscle vs the give-in muscle. I always think of those crabs with the one big arm. In my case I need to shrink that big arm a little, ;-)

Now that I am within 10 pounds of my goal weight (in the healthy BMI Range), I am pretty much at a healthy weight, so why do I want to continue to lose more and get to my goal weight (in the mid BMI range)

Because
1 I feel best and am most agile at goal weight.

2 I want to follow a consistently healthy nutrition plan = lifestyle.

3 I want to not yoyo, I want to reach and maintain goal weight plus or minus 3 pounds.

4 I don't want my emotions to influence what I eat, I want giving my body what it needs for optimal health to influence what I eat.

5 I want to find and model healthy living and eating habits to my family, especially to the young people in my family

I boiled down my advantage list into a little poem:

"I will not be frumpy. It's good for my brain.
I won't fall and break a hip.

I'm healthy and active. I feel in control.
I work out for lots of zip."

I'ts not going to win any poetry contests, but it's easier to remember than a list.

I'm taking a slightly different tone with the ARC - all the reading I've done over the past few years leads me to write these as if they are already true and complete -- more of a vision statement than an advantage list, maybe, but I'm going to try it this way.

1) I am confident
2) I am strong
3) I am lean and healthy
4) I am able to purchase pretty clothes that don't come from the fat-peoples' store
5) I can move easily
6) I am pain-free
7) I am active
8) I eat to fuel my body

In the past I wrote them as "I want to be.... or I will be....(whatever) -- but it always felt fake and ho-hum (like the teacher on Charlie Brown -- blah blah blah)

I'm trying it this way for now - I can change them later if they bother me. I have them on my laptop screen and in my dayplanner, and I'll add them to my sparkpage.

As well, I need to finish reading the first few chapters tonight.

Kriszta, thanks for leading this group.

My original list has 32 advantages. I memorized them and went through them in my mind every night before falling asleep and every morning before getting out of bed. Then I read in the Beck book that I shouldn't just "think" them, I should "read" them because reading them has a greater effect. So now I read them. But I've become a little sloppy, just reading them and not really thinking about each one as I read it. I will still read the long list twice a day, morning and night, but in addition I have made an index card with only 8 advantages, the ones that I actually felt were most important to me. I also noted that the Beck book says "Every time you read an advantage card, think to yourself, How important is this to me? Rating each benefit in this way makes you think more carefully than if you simply allow your eyes to quickly glance at the words. This active process of reflection helps you internalize these reasons and commit them to memory..." I haven't been asking myself that when reading each advantage and it seems like a lot of time when I had a list of 32 advantages, so reducing it to 8 might work better for me.

I've also set my alarm on my iphone to go off at 4:30 pm and 8:10 pm, which are times of the day when I am most tempted to something that is unplanned. The alarm is to remind me to ready my short version of advantages index card.

Here is my short version of advantages:

ADVANTAGES RESPONSE CARD
How important is each advantage?
1. I will feel proud of myself.
2. I will feel in control.
3. I will have more confidence.
4. I will look better.
5. I won't struggle with whether or not to eat something.
6. I will feel as if I have accomplished something important.
7. I will feel happier.
8. I will feel better physically.

Previously,I listed many relevant advantages.
This time, I would sum them all up by saying that I am following a healthy lifestyle because i do it for myself and the discipline makes me feel proud of myself.

Kristza, Thanks from me, too!

Here's what my October 2018 Advantages Response Card looks like:

1. Health
2. Function
3. Appearance
4. Confidence
5. Self-Respect
6. Clothes

I am currently working on blogging my "100 Days of Why" and I'm on Day 28. I'm thinking all my reasons will fit into one of these categories. Even though I've been blogging, I have not been using my card. I think reading it, holding it in my hand, at least twice a day will make a difference. I have identified "short term loss of motivation" as my #1 problem in maintenance, so I believe this step is crucial for me.

Here is what I have so far arranged for my 100 days, with my blog day in parenthesis:

I. HEALTH (1)
a. Feel My Best (9)
b. Blood Pressure (12)
c. Cholesterol (14)
d. More Likely to Live Longer (19)
e. Normal Blood Sugar (27 )

2. FUNCTION (2)
a. Run Faster (5)
b. Retain Mobility So I Can Handle Emergencies Better (10)
c. Enjoy Running More (11)
d. Winning Race Bling (13)
e. Enjoy Dancing (16)
f. Complete Chores More Efficiently (18)
g. Handle Heat Better (20)
h. Tie Shoes in the Middle (25)

3. APPEARANCE (3)
a. Love Compliments (15)
b. "Make an Entrance" (17)

4. CONFIDENCE (4)
a. I am a Role Model (8)
b. Jump on Doc's Scale, No Dread (28)

5. SELF-RESPECT (6)
a. Happier (22)
b. "Athlete's" Resting Heart Rate (26 )

6. MY CLOTHES FIT (7)
a. Can Take Off Jacket (21)
b. Folding Small Panties/Shorts (23 )
c. Enjoy Clothes Shopping (24)

"Clothes" used to be under the category of "Appearance" but I recognize that fitting into my clothes is a MAJOR motivator for me, so I gave it its own category!

I have more than 100 "Why"s (Reasons, Advantages) written out, but I'm just focusing on one a day. I'm going to continue this exercise even as I re-read Beck. But this time I'll get out my card to hold and read and ponder at least twice a day!!

Wow, this is great, so many people have posted already and it has been a pleasure reading all of your thoughts about advantages.

I decided to do a new and fresh set of cards for this reading, even though I've read Beck a couple times before. Every time I learn something.

I will write my cards on my (free!) Evernote app, and will remind myself to read my cards in the morning, before lunch and before dinner by wearing my watch on my right wrist instead of my left.

Here are my advantages. Many are the same but some are new.

I'll feel more attractive.
I'll enjoy seeing myself in the mirror.
I'll enjoy feeling more attractive to my husband.
I'll get joy from shopping for clothes.
I'll feel more self-confident.
I'll enjoy feeling lean, agile and strong again.
I'll have more energy.
I'll reduce the chance that I will suffer from diabetes, heart disease or stroke.
I'll increase the chance that I will live longer.
I'll enjoy exercise more, and increase my endurance.
My cravings will diminish.
I will be proud that I've achieved a goal that's important to me.
It will feel good to have trained my brain to soothe myself in ways that don't involve food (thank you, WARRIORSUE!)

Hi team,

Thank you Kriszta so much for arranging this challenge...I read the book before and tried to apply the tips but couldn稚 stay long because I didn稚 follow exactly the days as mentioned in the book..
I used to read 3 or 4 days and apply them then did a very wrong thing: I skipped the 14 days and started the diet using the tips all in once :-) I didn稚 have patience to go slow and ended up with being overwhelmed and I forgot about them all,

My biggest problem is the emotional eating and I hope in this challenge and following the tips as mentioned to get rid of this bad habit and change my thinking for good...

I finished the 4 chapters last days to start fresh with you...

This time I will try my best to accomplish the most important goal in my life which will affect in all areas in my personal life and my personality.

So, today is Day1:
My advantage list:
- to get rid Of Emotional Eating and Eat healthy in a balanced way.
- to feel in control and strength my will power
- to have a higher self-esteem
- to look better
- to be more active and happy
- to end my struggle with weight loss forever and feel success to overcome it finally.

Change your thinking, Change you weight!

Hi Team, this is the first post of the "Beck Diet Solution (Pink) Group Reading October 2018".
I read the book first in January 2015, and I'm following Beck principles ever since - they really make dieting easier for me.
This is the 5th group reading I lead, I do it every March and October to help Sparkers learn skills that make dieting easier - in weight loss phase and in maintenance.

Today's chapter is
The Beck Diet Solution (Pink) book
The Program - Chapter 5 - Week 1: Get Ready to Lay the Groundwork
Day 1: Record the advantages of loosing weight.

Our task is creating an Advantages Response Card (ARC), with all the advantages of weight loss, so that we can remember them at difficult times, and make better choices.
We will read our personal ARC twice daily during the 42 days of the program, and even after that.

Please share your advantages list, and tell us about your thoughts and emotions on the Day 1 thread (link below):
Day 1: Record the advantages of loosing weight

geboard_thread.asp?board=0x10071x850R>5889

Remember: we are NOT supposed to start dieting, or make any changes in our food plan yet.
In the first 14 days we will learn skills that make dieting easier,
and we will start making changes on Day 15.
If you are already following a healthful diet, that is fine, just continue what you are doing.

This is my new Advantage Response Card:
(in my case, advantages of keeping up my healthy lifestyle and weigh)
* eating my simple and delicious meals is deeply satisfactory: taste, volume, texture of my food, and the time I spend eating
*I'm free from thinking about food between meals
*I feel the best on this food plan: I'm strong, energetic, active, fresh and alert
*I look good in any clothes
*I love routines and repetition - why not?

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

Boost in self-esteem
More able to fit in airplane seats, roller coasters, theater seats (though really, they should just make them bigger -- even thin people have trouble fitting a lot of times!)

Sunshine, your response cards seem to have a safer space on your phone!
Great positive list, and Christmas in South Africa sounds like good motivation.

Here I am - day 1! (Again!)

There are some really motivational advantage response cards here. I find it tough to sit and read them. I start well, but then forget. And my toddler kept hiding the index cards. Now, I have them sitting next to me and as a photo on my phone. But, I've also been thinking that perhaps I need one that I can remember, which after a lot of thought, is 'to feel confident in a bikini this Christmas'. (We are going back to South Africa this Christmas and nobody there has seen me since I reached my goal weight in 2011. What I really struggle with now is consistency and since my pregnancy, staying on the same weight on the scale (give or take a pound or two). I do a lot of jumping up about five pounds and then down again.)

Here is my longer list:

I'll be able to fit into my clothes again
I feel better when I exercise and eat healthily
I want to feel in control of my healthy eating habits
A healthy second pregnancy (I'm having a harder time falling pregnant second time round)
I'll be able to exercise without discomfort
Ill have more energy
I'll look and feel better
I'll be a role model for my family
I'll feel good when I stand on the scale
I'll trust myself when I eat out
I'll be more assertive
I feel better when I say "no"
Better thought processes
I won't be emotionally attached to food.

Hello Kriszta and All,

I've decided to come back because of health reasons mainly, my NEW Advantages to losing weight. Mind you, I may have had some health reasons on my list but now, the older i get, well, i realize the more vulnerable I am and feel.

1. Ankle/foot pain. If I'm above goal, above that 3%, well, hello pain ;) Yes, don't need much.
2. Last physical, had blood test result of high cholesterol, don't need meds, hopefully won't ever!
3.Developed Atopic Dermatitis last Fall. The cleaner I eat, the better i feel.
4. I monitor my blood pressure, as high blood pressure runs in my father's side of the family and I measured it recently and it was quite high. I wouldn't want to take meds for that Either.
5. Eating clean 80% of the time gives me more energy and I look younger.

So I will check in from time to time and currently am reviewing the Pink book links.

Thanks so much for This!

Thank you, Krizta, for the welcome back and the wise words. I really need to get this into my being that it may not be possible to obliterate the urge to binge, but certainly I can continue to manage it.

Sue, welcome back to the team!
I agree, you need to manage binge eating - to conquer it permanently may not be possible.
On the bright side, managing it is doable, and sounds far less scary than conquering.
You deserve lots of credit for all the healthy changes you have made!

Idgie, I loved your comment about the tendency.
Congratulations to living binge free since 1996!

I was never diagnosed with binge eating disorder, but there were years in my life when I would have met the criteria. Not anymore. But still, once every 1-2 years, I have instances of serious overeating. The tendency is still there.

Idgie, thank you. I do agree, that will certainly be part of the growing up process, accepting the tendency and accepting that each day we have to be stronger than it, and say no.

Sue, maybe part of the growing-up process (for both of us) is going to be just accepting that we have a tendency that we're no longer going to indulge. The longer it gets since my last binge, the more sure I am that I can go without bingeing, but that doesn't mean the tendency toward it has just magically disappeared. It gets easier, though, it really does. (My last binge was in 1996, and my last meal that approached the scary binge place was July 5, 2018, but I managed to keep it from sliding off the rails.)

Below was my original list when I was here in March. What I have come to know in five short months is that I believe that I will always have to manage my binge behavior, rather than conquer it (happy for all of your thoughts if you feel that is incorrect thinking), that not bingeing HAS grown me up in many ways, that I feel good and also feel like a work in progress when I look in the mirror, that I am wearing clothes in my closet I haven't worn in many years, I AM taking less medication, and I am certain that emotional weight and letting that go has done EVERYTHING for my physical weight. I almost never try to soothe myself with food.

~ to finally conquer my binge eating. I've been eating this way since age 13.
I really want to grow up, emotionally.
~ to like what I see in the mirror and not constantly feel embarrassed and/or judged
~to stay off medications as I age
~ to wear the smaller sized clothes in my closet
~ to train my brain to take care of myself in ways that do not involve soothing myself with food
~ to not feel ashamed to be naked in front of my husband
~ to have the satisfaction of success
~to be able to choose clothes that are attractive and not just camoflague.
~ I want to exercise harder and have it feel good
~ I may be wrong but I feel that if I can rid myself of the physical weight I will also be ridding myself of lifelong emotional weight. That is my biggest reason for wanting this.

I felt so compelled to return to the group and to the Beck principles today.
The logic of Beck, the discipline of Beck, was just "overwhelming to my feelings" when I first joined back in April or May. Now that I am flexing my "no" muscle and being totally accountable for what I put in my mouth, I feel ready to take this next step. You have all been so welcoming to me in the past, I am happy to be part of such a quality team.
