I didn't think eating while sitting down was going to be a big issue for me. Hm, guess again! I ate lunch while sitting, but munched on a cookie while standing, and then tasted the big pot of soup I had made for supper while standing at the stove. If anything, I'm more aware now and that's a good thing.

I am a little behind. But I might be able to catch up since I have been working on all the Beck tasks already.

Eat sitting down is a great reminder. I am going to an event tonight with snacks. I already planned not to have snacks. Instead eat dinner before I go and have a snack when I get home. Eat sitting down ties in really well, and will help me remember not to graze ‘accidentally. So glad I’m back to the group!

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

This one seems so easy until you really think about it. I do eat the samples at Costco/Sam's. I need to start thinking about people coughing near them, etc. I did this when I lost weight before and I found that it IS possible to say no to samples. I did it before and I can do it again.

I made 2 response cards. One says "do it anyway" because I tend to go through the reasons why I don't want to, how it isn't fair, etc. The other says: "Just this once" has a tendency to turn into "way too often." I have to develop lifetime skills if I want a lifetime of being thinner.

I made the 2nd one relevant to include things beside sitting down to eat all the time no matter what. I eat and drink a lot of things "just this once." I must get away from accepting that phrase.

I tend to eat in the car after a workout or on weekends when running lots of errands. Will definitely work on stopping this behavior. No more food samples at Sams Club!

Updated 1/1/19

Awhile ago, I bought a placemat that says blessed and a coaster that says grateful both at Dollar Tree. They sit at my space at the table and a reminder to be mindful. Also bought two smaller size saucer plates and a wine glass to drink my water out of. So I take my time when I sit down at the dining room table to eat.

Also, if there does come an instance where I do stop for fast food (not good I know), but I will at least pull into a parking space to eat it there so that I am sitting down and taking my time.

Day 3 Eat sitting down. Although I lost weight making healthy choices, I still have a problem with eating in front of TV watching Netflix. Working on being mindful of every bite, so I don't eat mindlessly when I'm already full. I'll be more visually satisfied with the TV off. ~ Make the most of every bite~

I thought I had it licked until I started reading Day 3 posts... : I still do sample wines at the liquor store, foods at the grocery. Sure, it does not happen every day, but I have to make it a hard rule. I am sure it will make me more aware of food.

Today i had a very hectic day and my only choice was to eat my home prepared lunch sitting down in the car. I am ok with that as the alternative would have been to have lunch at to some fast food restaurant.

Eating by myself without the usual distraction of the internet was a new experience for me. I really liked it but would feel punished if I had to do it daily. But we know this is on the program for another Beck day...

Eating only while sitting continues to be a challenging rule for me. I have been attacking it in stages. First step, No food samples ever and this is ingrained now. When tempted I think thoughts like where has that food been and that stops me cold. Also I give myself credit and I think about how thankful I am for the countless calories that have been saved.

Step two from my first time through Beck I committed to eating only veggies and small tastes as I cooked. I did okay for awhile but had some major slip ups this summer and allowed frosting, cake batter... emoticon and found myself at the top of maintenance and very glad to see this study start again.

I commit to not eating while standing but as far as in the car just most of the time. Today after subbing extra and teaching two hours of vigorous water aerobics, I ate 1/2 of a banana and 4 almonds twice, just enough to stave off a headache and finding myself too close to being an angry, hunger crazed shopper and driver far from home.

I got this one! This became a consistent habit during the last group reading. This habit also stopped me from eating food samples while going through Costco because it would have meant eating while pushing a cart around. I never take a sample in any grocery store now. Not even tempted and yet at one time I would never refuse a sample. I'm taking credit for this change.

When I feel like eating standing up, I'm going to either sit down or not eat. I will remind myself that if I don't have time to eat sitting down, I don't have time to eat at all.

I have mostly conquered this one. I still do taste food when I'm cooking, but not as a buffet-type thing -- I just taste it if it needs it so I can see if I need to change anything. And nowadays, I don't cook any off-plan foods, so I'm not eating anything that's not on my plan.

Eat sitting down. Simple rule.

I agree, it makes a difference. Before I read Beck I never thought about it.

I remember when I felt so very out of control and thought I just couldn't help myself, that I would always eat compulsively and without thinking. I read a book. It pointed out that there were places I didn't eat. Like in the shower. Come to think of it, I never ate in the bathroom. OK. I could choose not to eat.

So, informed by Beck, I choose to only eat sitting down. I also have the rule that sitting in the car, especially driving, is not really sitting.

At this point I almost always eat sitting down, but I'll be extra careful to make that 100% during this re-Beck. Hoping to make it every time from now on!!

Kriszta, what a great realization for you! This skill was one of the easiest for me to learn. It was such a simple thing yet it makes such a difference. I still slip every once in a while but for the most part, I adhere to this rule. I like to see my food spread in front of me, and Dr. Beck is right, it gives me psychological satisfaction.

Thats true! Most of our extra calories we eat while standing up! Because we dont feel it or count it as eating... sometimes I eat meals standing too when Im in a hurry... I hope I can change this habit and sit down while eating at all times and enjoy every bite.

Hi team, today is
Day 3: Eat Sitting Down

Eat Sitting Down - may sound easy, as most of us eat our meals sitting down.
But this chapter is about Not Eating Anything While Standing Up - that' more difficult, isn't it?
Instead, we should notice every bite we put in our mouth - and sit down to eat it.
First, to notice.
Second, to take our time and actually enjoy it.
Please share your thoughts (or link to your blog) on this thread!

At my first reading, back in 2011 January I was at goal weight, but Eating Sitting Down made a huge change in my eating behaviors.
Eating sitting down made me realize how much I ate standing up, and that almost ALL my overeating was done standing up, or it started with eating a few bites standing up.
Before that, I had always thought those bites do not matter - well, they did!
I continued eating the same meals and snacks as before - just stopped eating standing up, really not one single bite.
Results:
1. I felt hungry more often, for longer and more intensely
2. I started to lose weight rapidly
3. I had to add 300 calories per day to my food plan to stop losing = this is how much I had eaten standing up everyday, ever noticing it.

Since my first go-round with this, I have gotten almost 100% at not eating unless I'm sitting down, but yesterday, I was walking to the breakroom with my food, and I caught myself eating it while walking, which is doubly bad because I was in view of co-workers and students, so it's not just a bad habit, but it looks bad to others. I stopped myself right away.

I hear you, Sunshine! I used to eat a LOT standing up, probably because it helped me pretend those calories do not count, and to forget about them quickly.

I'm in denial about this one. I have to eat sitting down. Every bite counts, so it makes sense to sit down and enjoy it.
If I want a sweet treat, I tend to nibble it while walking so that my toddler won't see. It's a guilty secret!!
But being healthy is more important. I have to eat sitting down.

I like what INTUITIVEEATING posted - "If I don't have time to eat sitting down, I don't have time to eat." That sort of puts eating in a whole new category, something I need to make time for and not just do it whenever.

When I feel like eating standing up, I'm going to either sit down or not eat. I will remind myself that if I don't have time to eat sitting down, I don't have time to eat at all.

I'm going to remind myself to sit down when I eat by clearing off the table tonight and putting my favorite chair at the table.

We sit at table for family meals already most of the time. It is a time for us to connect with one another. Biggest hurdle for me is to not "taste test" while I am cooking!

I felt rushed to sit-down with square of 100% cacao emoticon Usually grab 1 square out of freezer to eat standing-up. DH dosen't want 100% cacao - too bitter. That's okay, I know how much to buy - 16 squares each bar or 2 bars/month emoticon

Eat Sitting Down

This is an easy one for me. I have conquered the urge to eat on the go quite awhile ago. My biggest challenge is to eat without distractions and to make my meals last 20 minutes while chewing and thinking about my food. -- Working on this.

I have read the lesson before about sitting down to eat.
I think I am good at this one as my DH and I always eat together.
Of course snacking is hit and miss but I am working on sitting every time. emoticon

Just prepared my lunch with no tasting or snacking. DH suggested that we go out for lunch, but I said Id rather eat at home where I could more easily control what I ate and how it was prepared. Homemade chicken/rice/vegetable soup with some left-over roastd chicken.

What a timely reminder to get back to sitting down while eating -- how had I gotten away from this good habit? Today, I ate every meal, every bite, while sitting down. No nibbling or tasting. No snacking on the run. Back on track...

I read this late in the evening yesterday. I don't think I sat down at the table all day yesterday. Sometimes I sit on the couch when watching tv. I would like to break that habit. Problem is that I let stuff stack up on the table, and it's not exactly the best place to try to sit down.

I want this habit of not sitting at the table to stop. Decluttering and sitting down to eat go hand in had for me.

I took this very seriously today, and it turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. I thought that I had more or less kicked the standing while eating habit, but I found myself picking on lettuce while making a salad, struggling not to eat little pieces of chicken from a carcass, and eating a PB sandwich on the run. I successfully conquered all of those urges. But I did have two rum and cokes while I talked to people at a memorial gathering (no food, though). I am a little ambivalent about the drinks. I did not go overboard and it did ease a situation that was difficult. It may be a question of priorities.

I rarely eat when I am not sitting down, but just did it tonight. emoticon
:
I added .25 oz of unplanned walnuts to my dessert . I keep them in the freezer, and upon taking them out, I found myself eating one before I sat down.
I really have to relax when eating; eating standing up in the kitchen is not relaxing and not as enjoyable.

But I must say that in general, this lesson has become a habit.

Eating sitting down was a challenge for me but I have turned it into a habit. The only exception may be when I trying to get out early in the morning whereby I'm sitting however, I'm in my office checking emails or Sparking.

Thank you for the GoogleDoc, Jeanne!
I tried to write down the instructions how to post a link so that it turns into a blue hyperlink for Tweety and all who want to link in their blogs.
But when I posted, my text turned into hyperlink and didn't show the instructions : (
Check it out, very helpful!

Gosh, this is a hard one for me. In school, I grew up with the fact that the faster you ate, the more recess you got. I got a lot of recess, lol. I'm not saying that's my reason for eating while standing up, but you get in a certain mindset even when the world *isn't collapsing* and it becomes an ingrained habit. How many meals have I eaten and not really enjoyed? Too many, I'm afraid. Here's to being mindful (and aware)!

Eat sitting down - and be mindful of eating - these are big issues to work on. I tend to eat breakfast and lunch and snacks while at the counter. I also tend to be reading or watching tv or cooking or something else while eating.
