I thought I was alone in my love of hanging my clothes outside to dry. Its finally getting warm enough to do that here. Now if only the rain would stop! And I also do dishes by hand.
What I dont find so easy if making myself exercise! I always have an excuse not to do it. I have discovered fit tv. They show lots of different exercise shows so I can just pick and choose whatever happens to be on when I'm home. I have done belly dancing, yoga, and many others. Helps keep the boredom of it all at bay. I still dont want to do it, but once I get started, I keep going.

Wow Do2heal :) You have such an awesome attitude towards exercise! I've always been mentally allergic preferring to curl up with a good book... so regular intentional exercise is something i've always resisted.

I finally decided I must to avoid having to use a cane permanently or become bedridden, and i've had to start really slow & build up... and then I found that mentally I still was resistant...

i don't know but i am finally turning the corner with that.. I've finally accepted that there are compelling health reasons to exercise ~ heart health, lower diabetes, increased muscle strength = higher metabolism... slower loss of bone density & even improved bone density? not sure about that one ~ lol ~ but it sounds good.

I have been surprised to actually feel a lift in my mood when those endorphins get to rocking & a rolling...

i am still waiting for a spring in my step and for an urge/willingness deep down inside, but i'm finally accepting that exercise should be a regular part of my life and i might as well enjoy it!

& i agree, there are all sorts of ways to get up & move (short bursts of exercise) ~ it's all good :)

This was easy for me as I am already exercising. I have a collection of Leslie Sansone walk/aerobics DVD, Pilates dvds, An old stationary bike, hand weight, stability ball, stretch band-resistance bands and a pedometer. So I have a mini gym at home. Oh yea I do strength training but I don't like it. I found out while reading the beck book that not do we lose fat but muscle too. That is not good. This was not in the book but we lose 1/4 muscle after the age of 20. I hate it but I smile and bear it. Do it anyway!!! The only thing that may keep me from exercising is sickness me or my kids. Other than that I am exercising. Even when I ate my worst I could always exercise. Since I am a stress/anger eater I will use exercise, prayer to combat the urge to eat at these times.

We have a fairly new car sorry for saying this but people are lazy and don't want to walk to far to the department stores. I have learned to park far away that way my car won't get all banged and scratched up. I see them riding around and around trying to find a parking place near the store. Huh when it warms up I hang the clothes out on the line (old fashioned in these times) electricity costs. Every penny saved is good. I wash dishes by hand not dish washer. Hey every movement helps out. emoticon . I do have a hand grater and I use it but when there is a rush I do take out the old trusty food processor. emoticon

I don't do much outside activities I have wicked allergies and I don't want to get started. So most of my workouts are inside. Unless I need a change up and go to local college and walk in the student center.

Good Job, Judie! (Sorry I missed this post earlier!)

Maybe I'll check the library to see if they have Zumba so I can give it a try!

Exercise plan
Walking - I use a pedometer and add walking extra steps whenever possible -- go down every aisle in stores, dance while I watch t.v. When I started my baseline was 1000 steps a day. Now, my minimum is 5000 steps (won't get into bed until I get there --unless I am sick) and my goal is 8000 - 10,000 steps a day in order to count it as exercise.
Additions -- I am waiting for my zumba dvd's to arrive. I am hoping that I will love them and will do them 2x a week.
Weight training - For now I want to add doing this at home 3x a week -- starting today! I have copies of exercises from Spark pages. I am also going to check out the YMCA and other local gyms that have machines to make sure they have ones I can use (my orthopedic surgeon told me what I can and cannot do since I have 2 knee replacements.)I plan on joining a gym in the next month or two.
So, this week's goals
Walk 5000 - 10,000 steps every day (8,000 or more at least 4 times a week)
Zumba -- try out dvd and learn steps as soon as it arrives
Weight training - 3x
I am putting this on an index card as a daily reminder.

emoticon Day 9 Select an Exercise Plan

(does not mean i have to do it today ~ tomorrow morning really is soon enough ;)

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

exercise has always been the 3rd leg, er rail for me... as in the rail to nowhere that i avoid like the plague!!! mentally allergic yanno and terribly resistant. i have done it some but never looked forward to it... except on a few rare occasions...

so, i hope that someday the enthusiasm will well up from deep down inside someday and I will look forward to getting those endorphins a rockin & a rollin!

in the meantime... i am serious about succeeding with my goals and making my hopes and dreams a reality....

I have been good with spontaneous exercise, getting in an extra 10 or 5 mins of walking while shopping or this or that, but i tend to put off and procrastinate any regular exercise sessions.

so, i really do need to buckle down with scheduled exercise... and as they say, Just Do It!!!!

after considering all Ms. Beck had to say, I think I need to schedule it for first thing every morning.

emoticon that would be to actually schedule and do?:

emoticon water aerobics 2 to 3 times a week, M, W &/or Fri early am class

emoticon walking min 5 mins before breakfast T, Th & Sat

emoticon min 5 mins barbells and/or resistance bands and stretching T, Thu & Sat

I choose to do Body for Life as my work out program. For my cardio, I'll be doing the couch potato to 5k program on my mini-trampoline. Jogging on the mini-trampoline may not sound very strenous, but it makes me sweaty and my joints don't hurt. Plus, I get a huge endorphin rush, so I'm positive that jogging on the mini-tramp is beneficial.

For the next two months, I'm going to utilize the Bally's pass as much as possible. I start off with 5 - 10 minutes on the cycle, followed by strength training every other day, then the elliptical for at least 20 minutes (this is slowly increasing). On consecutive days, I'll just do cardio the second day. I haven't been there every day of the week yet.

I have a nice collection of DVDs, and am slowly discovering what is in our local library system and in Netflix.

Unplanned: parking further away for now (I did this tonight!). The weather is too iffy to walk into town right now.

Edited to add: just read the workbook. Daily short: Winsor Dozen followed by a short yoga workout.

Blessings Always
Elisabeth

Hi Sandy, I don't remember what NIA stands for, but it's a dance/martial arts/cardio exercise class. I find it super fun, very positive energy and not at all like exercise (even though we sweat up a storm!).

so encouraging to see to many of us that have incorporated exercise into life.

Go Shawn! Go Sandy! Go Lisa S! Go Mary!

I'm not there yet, but will have to find a way to keep it consistent.

This week, I went to a NIA class on Monday and walked briskly for 1 hour on Tuesday.

My plan is to do at least 1 class a week (either NIA or step), 1 day on my own in the gym (weights+cardio) and 1 day doing something sports/social (probably walking with a friend until April, then tennis/biking once the weather gets warmer). For now, I think doing something 3x per week is realistic, doable and not overwhelming.

so have one more thing to do this week....

Exercise is what's keeping me on the path toward my goal. If I don't do it, my mood sags and the urge to eat grows in accordance. That was glaringly apparent over the holidays.

My schedule is set so I do 6 days of official exercise. Over the past week I've changed the intensity & duration of each session, trying some new machines at the gym, longer yoga poses at home and longer walks outside.

Mon 60" gym
Tue 90" yoga class
Wed 60" gym
Thu 30" walk + 30" yoga
Fri 60" gym
Sat rest
Sun 30" walk + 30" yoga

My biggest challenge is not ending a little early because I'm tired or would rather do something else. To lose weight, I have to be willing to do a little extra for now. Later, when I'm in maintenance mode, I can follow a less demanding schedule.

Exercise is fun to me. I found a workout that I LOVE, have been doing it for well over a year, consistently. If I could eat what I want and exercise like a demon, I would already be at my goal weight. Sadly, I must exercise AND eat healthy. emoticon

I've got the exercise part of the equation down pretty well.

I've been walking 3.5 to 4 miles every day for over a year. I prefer walking outdoors, but in the winter I have to do an indoor walk DVD because I'm afraid of slipping on the icy roads. I have several Walk Away the Pounds DVDs and rotate the 3 mile and 4 mile DVDs. If I skip a day (which isn't very often), I feel like I'm missing something...like I haven't brushed my teeth or something!

I started doing a toning program called T-Tapp last March. It's a DVD that takes 50 minutes and I do it every other day.

Quoting Dr. Beck:

"Once I accept that exercise is essential and start doing it consistently dieting will be easier."

I'm willing to use weights three times a week.

I'm comfortable with spontaneous exercise (seems to work for me these days) vs planned exercise.

I'm using a pedometer, and it is making me aware of my movement and motivates me to move!

I'm doing Curves for my exercise plan. I think eventually it won't be enough, but right now I enjoy it and so that helps keep me motivated to attend. My favorite part is this big stretching jungle gym like contraption for stretching--I look forward to it at the end of my workout.
I've also begun walking at lunch again--it's hard to fit in since I only have a 35 minute lunch, and need to be ready for the afternoon with my students, but even 10 minutes is better than none and reflects back to me that I am committed to this plan.
I also want to do 1 longer walk (30 min to an hour) at least one day of the weekend. I've been pretty consistent about doing this already, and now I just need to make sure I schedule it in and commit to doing it.

i already exercise regularly-- i bought a budget-priced elliptical machine, and go to a yoga studio. what i need to do, though, is learn to not be obsessed and over-exercise. i set unrealistic standards (90 min. yoga class and 45 min. on the machine or something ridiculous like that) and get burnt out and really tired. i'm going to shoot for 30 minutes of cardio 5 days, and yoga when i can get to class, kind of like a treat. i also consider yoga most of my strength training, although spark doesn't recommend it. have a fantastic day, everyone! --jean

Jeanne,
Looks like a good exercise plan! Don't you wish you could put your dog on the treadmill with you?! Making time for exercising is one of those things you have to tell yourself "No Choice" to; it needs to be done and once you get used to it, you miss it when you don't do it.

My exercise plan is 20-30 minutes of aerobics on the treadmill (at home, my dog sits in the room with me!), 15 minutes of dumb bells, 75-? crunches. My goal is to start this plan 3 days per week and work up to 5 days per week.

This is my most difficult step to date. I have to fit in my exercising in the morning, 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m., Monday - Friday. I don't have the motivation yet to add this as "just part of my day".

I'm trying a combination of walk/running that works you up to running for 20 minutes over a 9 week period. It is similar to the Couch to 5K routine.

The dumb bell exercises I pull from a book titled "Dumb Bells for Smart Girls".

I hope by documenting my plan here that this will be my motivation to "just do it!". As I review the Beck workbook page each night...if I can't check off the exercise task then this will bother me.

Update 1/23/08: Still working this plan. It has become more routine once I did it consistently for 1 week. I'm on week 4 of the 5K routine.

I loved Younger Next Year. It took a year to get my husband to read it and now he is a convert too. That's handy because I hate to go to the gym alone.

I have also been giving copies to my brothers and to friends. It's a quick read but very inspiring.

Phoenician,
I read Younger Next Year, too! My doctor told me to and that's what started me trying to live healthier. Strength training is the hardest thing for me to add into my schedule, too.

Mazzy,
Definitely start slow! If you do too much you will hurt yourself and then you won't exercise. Slow and steady wins the race!

MazzyR - you are right to start slowly. I am amazed at how slowly you need to progress on some things. I had physical therapy once for a problem and it was a great lesson in how to progress slowly.

If you are really out of shape you will be able to see visible progress pretty quickly, so that is encouraging.

Selecting an exercise plan and actually exercising is my least favorite thing to do.

I am completely out of shape... I have tried exercise and either hurt myself or get extra hungry.

My plan is to start with 5 minutes of walking per day and slowly work up to 20 minutes. I will do weight training exercises... 3 x a week... again starting off slowly.

I started wearing the gadget that counts steps and am consciously making an effort to work towards 10,000 per day. It's a great little tool that reminds me to move more.

Luckily my huisband and I had already started doing more exercise before I started this. We were inspired by the book Younger Next Year. Since we live in Phoenix, we cannot always exercise outside in the summer - way too hot! So we go to a nearby gym regularly. Currently we are trying to go to the gym for 45 minutes on M TU TH & Fr. I use the elliptical machine and/or the walker. On Wednesdays I go to a yoga class. Sometimes I substitute a yoga class for a gym day. On the weekends we either go to the gym or take a long walk. Currently my husband is sick and I have not been to the gym all week, I hate going without him. Luckily the weather is nice now so I have been walking more and I did go to my yoga class this week. Sunday is our day off exercise although we often go for a nice walk anyway.

What I am short on is strength training although the yoga does help. Currently I am working on increasing my functional exercise. So I do standing squats (chair pose) while waiting doe something to cook in the kitchen. I stand up while putting on my clothes (helps balance). Also I am really focusing on improving my posture and I am seeing results.

Every week or so I seem to find a new area where I am shockingly weak. This week it was my ankles. So I am doing my squats and then standing on my toes and back down repeatedly. Maybe eventually I will work with weights but I am making progress that is meaningful to me this way.

What type of things do you do at the gym? I used to do circuit training there, after I did my cardio. I really enjoyed the regime of it. Now I don't have anyone to go with; a friend really helps! Good for you!

Go to the gym with my friend 3x a week do yoga twice a week.

Three things that help me succeed.
1. planning workout and meals a day or more ahead of time.
2. visiting urban mommy's page :)
3. Believing I can do it.

Three things that guarantee failure
1. fast food
2. emotional eating
3 being in a carb coma= no movement

They do have some interesting articles in there -- after you get past "I had an alien's baby!"

I'll have to do some research and see what I come up with. Thanks!

How did you find out about Harley Pasternak? I looked online and all I saw was about the diet. It sounds interesting!

I'm not familiar with H Pasternak. It does sound as if it's working for you. The added benefit of something that works with your busy schedule is important.

From what I'm understanding, consistency is a major key towards success.

I am currently using the 5 factor exercise routine by Harley Pasternak. It is a 25-30 min routine where you do strength training, core work and aerobics 5 days/wweek.

I found it by reading about it in a magazine and I like it because it does not take a long time and FEEL the results. The first week I was so sore I had to take off three days! It fits into my busy life easily and I need that to be consistent. On the two days off I choose to do treadmill alone.

A gift from my daughter was the complete set of "Strong Women" series. I had written in "Follow Strong Women on Tuesdays and Thursday.

That was my plan. Alas that plan fell under the category of Best Laid Plans By Mice And Men.

I have been riding my stationary bike daily. Sometimes the leg muscles will only last for 8-10 minutes. A couple times I made it to 20 minutes.

I make a public commitment to continue with the regimen of using the bike daily. My current PLAN-- (remembering best laid plans)

Ride the Stationery bike at least 20 minutes daily. If necessary this will be achieved in multiple sessions.

Do strength exercises. At least 2X weekly.

Between yourself and Sandy I'm persuaded I will make a commitment of doing strength exercises this week.

I've been watching the boards and noticed you have been consistent with regards to walking 30 minute daily.

Here's a glass of cyber water to drink when you return from that walk.

Sandy, you've got a nice mix in your exercise routine. Sounds as if your plan will strengthen your entire body.

I've heard the ellipticals are less stressful to the joints of a persons joints. In fact, a couple years ago one of my Doctors suggested that as the best way for me to exercise.

Hi Jan: Good for you walking everyday. I've got more than one exercise video drawing dust. You've reminded me to think about making use of one of them.

Hi everyone,

I'm somewhat consistent with getting in 30 minutes of walking everyday. I need to add some strength training. My goal for this week is to do strength training one day.

Mary, I applaud you for jogging. I just can't get into doing that.

I use aerobics dvds and walk the dog daily, when it is possible. I bought an elliptical and am trying to build up my time on it. I'm trying to be more consistent with my strength training, too.

It's a work in progress!

Hi,
Me too, I am walking. Last week I logged in 14 miles. This week I am on vacation and would like to take advantage of that. So far, 2 days = 7 miles.
I can't wait for the morning I'm doing another 3 miles. I just might hit 20 miles this week. If and when the weather is bad I have a back up walking tape that is one mile. That will fill in for me.
