Maria, Love it! What do we want more? Easy to answer.

"Oh, well" works well for me often. Especially with something I want to eat. "Oh, well, I can put it on my plan for tomorrow and have some." "Oh, well, I can handle a little hunger. I'm to eat again in another hour." "Oh, well, that store sample looks good, but I'd rather stick to my plan and be thinner."

Maribeth, You're so right...one bite leads to another! I like your mantra too. emoticon
I have used "Oh well" and other phrases in the past and they all helped but I seem to need a more militant response right now.

I found myself having ST's about wanting an unplanned snack last night and I had promised myself that I would write these ST's down if they became overpowering. Not wanting to get up to do this I asked myself in a very firm voice, "what do I want more, to keep working on my goal to look and feel my best or to eat something?" It worked. I have written What Do I Want MORE? on my ARC and reminder cards.

One bite leads to another with my trigger foods. It's easier to avoid the first bite then resist taking another. Say ~ emoticon "If it's to be, it's up to me." emoticon

Day 22, Say "Oh Well" to Disappointment is about accepting that life experiences are not always satisfactory, and yes that includes food-related situations.
We can't have it both ways, for a person who wants to reach and maintain a healthy weight, and to live a healthy life, it is impossible to always eat whatever they like.

"Once you truly accept that you NEED to follow the steps in this program, your struggles will diminish and dieting will become much easier."

Saying "Oh well... this meal was not as satisfactory and fun as I expected, but this was it, there is no more" is not easy. But it is easier to say at the end of a planned meal, than saying after the first unplanned bite, because once I started eating off plan, it gets harder with every bite.
The fullness I feel will increase in the next 20-30 minutes, and the desire to eat more will diminish,so the longer I resist, the better chances I have!

What are you thinking?
Please share here!

I love this concept but I don't like the phrase Oh Well very much.
I prefer "I don't wanna but I hafta" by @WATERMELLEN
Or just say That's Life!

I too find people got used to the fact I don't eat unplanned food.
I love when someone offers me a goodie, and people who know me say "Oh, she will not eat it. She never eats between meals"

It's funny how many of these lessons are things I've started doing already as a result of deciding to take my food plan seriously and make myself comply even when I don't want to. This one is basically what I do every day. Partner is eating something fried that smells great? Oh, well. Boss made cake for the office? Oh, well. I'm getting good at this, and people have stopped making a big deal about it because I don't treat it like a big deal unless I have to. (If someone pushes food one time too many, I say "Sorry, my cardiologist said not to eat that," and they shut up quick.)

Week overall down -3.3

I do have fluctuation day to day and the scales don't always reflect how compliant I am being or how compliant I am not being.

I do have to look at a bigger perspective then my day to day weight and the number on the scale. I was down for the week, but up from yesterday "Oh Well". My overall trend is down and that is what I need to focus on.

Day 22 "Oh Well" to Disappointment --

I have had a few really big disappointments in my life and what I have learned over the years is you might as well accept what is -- and move on -- because it is easy to get stuck spinning your wheels if you don't.

So "Oh Well" may sound a little like giving up, or giving in -- but I have also come to know it as -- Oh Well - Just Do It--. When I am able to start positive momentum from a place that feels stuck, I know I am able to keep the positive momentum going. I have a chance everyday to practice this by passing by food in the store that looks delicious, by getting up off my butt and doing my exercises, by cleaning the house, by paying the bills, by doing anything that I might be procrastinating on.

This year I had a difficult time doing my income taxes. I put it off for the 1st of April. The main reason that I put it off was that I didn't want to have to hunt for all the paperwork required to do the taxes. Funny thing is, I had forgotten that last year I had decided that in order to not have that happen, I had actually made up a folder for all relevant papers and had been filing them away most of the year in this folder. It was only the final 3 months of last year and the beginning of this year that I had all the paper unfiled. -- So once I said, Oh Well, and started gathering up the information I had a huge surprise. I was already 3/4 of the way finished with my job. -- I had to laugh at myself because I then remembered that I had had this feeling last year and had declared, I am never going to be in that position again.
So once I finished my taxes, I started celebrating how clever I was and already filed away papers for next year.

Oops a little off topic, but it is a way that I can see how disappointment doesn't always really mean that you have steered off course. It might just mean, Oh Well, what opportunity is awaiting me around this corner?

If you really want to get philosophical, if life didn't present us with OH WELL moments, we would never know how awesome the rest of our life is.

BECK Day 22 - 2nd weigh-in and lost 0.7 lbs. Really hoped for more. I can say “oh well”, but actually feeling it is harder. BUT... I didn’t exercise as regularly as I should have, and with the 2 Easter celebrations in 8 days, an 0.7 lb. loss is realistic... I can feel myself getting more positive already.

So... I planned to drop my husband off at the arena this morning, and run errands with our granddaughter, then go for a walk this afternoon. I checked the weather forecast and rain is predicted this afternoon, so instead I will get him to drop me off, with the stroller downtown, run the errands with Aria and then walk home.

To reach my goal weight, I need to follow the plan every day... there is NO CHOICE. I CAN do it, and I WILL do,it!

Today's lesson always gets me.

The first time I went through the Beck-niques Day 22 lesson, this jumped off the pages at me:

"Once you truly accept that you NEED to follow the steps in this program, your struggles will diminish and dieting will become much easier!!!"

During this lesson Beck talks of her youngest son. Beck's son is MY hero ... for six(6) years he followed the ketogenic diet due to his epilepsy!! Six years … every day … and as a child!!! Beck and her son coined the phrase ... Oh, well ... when her son was faced with foods he could not eat.

Yesterday ... well, we aren't gonna talk about it. Today ... it's a NOT MY FOOD day.

Oh, well ... kiddo.

Every time I go to the grocery store, I get a chance to practice "Oh well, to disappointment." I live in a large metro area. The local grocer has a bakery with fresh pastries just as you walk into the store. Next is the sushi bar with free samples. And if that's not enough there’s a chef preparing something that smells delicious a few yards from the sushi. On weekends one could have a whole meal just by eating the store samples. But I don't. I want to but I don't. If I want to maintain a healthy weight, i have to do some things I don't want to do. As tempting as it may be to try some of the cheese samples, I resist, and you know, I feel so good about it once I get home!

Tutunan described my struggles when she wrote about expectations that my meal should be the thrill of a life time.
And it reminded me that I have to eat in order to live rather to live in order to eat....

Today's (Day 22) chapter is about accepting that life experiences are not always satisfactory, and yes that includes food-related situations.

Hey Sunshine! What about a phrase like "That's life," "Such is life," or, to be really fancy, "C'est la vie?" It doesn't sound so give-up-ish, but is short and easier to say than the fleshed-out version "I don't like this but I'm going to accept it and move on." Kind of like short hand.

I've done something similar with my ARCs. For example, the short-hand version of one of my ARCs is "I'll feel more in control." The fleshed-out version goes like this: "I don't feel compelled to snack when I get home from work. I resist cravings for chips and candy. I control my emotions and keep things in perspective."

You've got this!!!

"Oh well" feels a bit like giving up. But "I don't like this but I'm going to accept it and move on" really works for me. I'm going to need to work on connecting "Oh well", with "I don't like this but I'm going to accept it and move on". Because I really like this premise and I think it can be adapted to so many other situations in life.

I'm down 2kg and feeling confident. I was a bit wobbly a few days ago, but feel I've got this, now. 2kg to go.

Thanks Kathleen. I just hit 125 today, now I have to find a day for the all-day hike. Maybe next Wednesday. The last few days today, yesterday, the day before ... 125 - 126 - 127.5 - 126.5 - 127.5 - 127. I'm feeling really good about that :) :) :) Now to balance out and maintain and then continue toward goal weight.

Cat, you are the only other person in my experience with the Beck diet solution who has mentioned and felt inspired by Beck's story of her youngest son and how he maintained a very difficult diet for 6 years while he was a child. This story is one of the things I keep present when I feel a going-off-plan rebellion brewing.

I like my diet coach's "Oh Well" summary - "oh, well... I don't have to like it but if I want those advantages on the card, I need to do it."

In Beck Pink, Beck talks about her child who was put on a very restrictive diet and his life was in peril if he ate "fun foods" that most kids can eat and they don't get fat because they are active (and probably because they eat less at regular meals) foods like candy, cookies, ice cream, or any other food that contained sugar. Surely if a child can adjust to such a difficult diet, I can at my leisure follow a slightly negative energy balance diet that allows me to lose weight slowly and steadily. When I want to eat off the plan and indulge for pleasure, I can think how silly and self-sabotaging that I don't have the strength to do this and a child does and did.

My weight today is 9 days after Day 15 because I didn't do a Beck trek every day. Speaking of eating off plan, my Day 15 weight is a high of 131.5 due to a few days of binging, my weight was averaging 129. Then I made some changes in my diet which are being very effective. I was eating generous protein, low carbs, healthy fats, but not watching how much fat. Now I am watching fat closer and I am eating more carbs (although no sugar or flour) and because my fat intake is lower, I was able to add more food and still have a lower daily calorie cap than before - about 2000 calories then, about 1700 calories now. My weight today is 127.5 and my weights for the previous 5 days are 126.6, 127.5, 127, 129, 128.5. I am happy with the current trend - goal weight is 122, my reward for touching 125 is and all-day hike and my reward for averaging 125 for a week is another all day hike. I really hope to average 125 by the end of the 5% Challenge I am participating in, which ends December 2.

So this Beck day is about dealing with disappointment, and I know I will need these responses, but right now, everything is going tickety boo.

Weighed in and recorded, no change, so this get to use the simple but important concept from this chapter, saying "Oh Well" and moving on.

For today
-Read ARC twice
-Ate sitting and mindfully most of the time, and gave myself credit. Monitored fullness after each meal and if I could take a walk.
-Did Sun Salutations this morning and gave myself credit.
--No cravings
--Stayed on plan, No Choice
-Took an unplanned walk today
-Have planned my meals and snacks for tomorrow in Spark Nutritional Tracker and gave
myself credit.
-Read my “It’s Not Okay” and “Get Back on Track” response cards twice
- Weighed myself, recorded my weight on my weight loss graph, no change, so got to use my “Oh Well” and move on.

I've been busy taking DH to hospital every day for IV antibiotic treatments and my body is getting tired as is my constitution!! Instead of complaining about it I think OH WELL, there isn't much I can do about it at the moment, and this too shall pass. So Oh Well is a suitable term to use in instances other than food or "not my food!!" Have a great day everyone.

YOU Mtn Kitten are not a child. YOU chose to address YOUR behaviors that led to and keep YOU overweight and unhealthy. This is ... uncomfortable!!!!! OH, well ... kiddo.

Any body with me???

Oh well is very timely. And not easy. I guess if it was, I would not be overweight.I am saying timely because I could feel a certain rebellion brewing after a few "good" weeks.
True too, that eating the best quality food we can afford makes dieting easier, and not like a punishment.

I weighed 1 Kg less this morning than last week, despite my extra food of last night.

However, I am becoming more aware, when I read your posts, how "just" going over by 150 cal daily can add up very quickly and show as a weight gain.

I am learning so much with this trek. And this is not my first reading; my first reading was about 10 years ago. Since then I slowly lost some weight, but this time around I want to get to my goal weight of 140lb.

I'm down 2 lbs from last week's weigh-in. That's a normal fluctuation for me, but it also tells me that what I'm doing is working. I'm back in the Green Zone (see my Day 21 blog if you want to know what this means).

I'm staying away from sugary snacks for the most part. Because this Beck reboot has increased my awareness, I've dropped my average daily calorie intake by about 150 calories compared to last month.

As far as "Oh Well" goes, I have this to contribute. I like ice cream, but I do not eat it. It hurts my teeth too much to endure the yummy taste. Oh well. When someone at work brings in DQ Dilly Bars for the crew, I say, "Thanks, but no thanks." Oh well. Other goodies "hurt" my waistline, so I can just as easily say Oh well to those.

p.s.
I agree with you, Rhonda, that "having sugar out of my system makes saying "Oh Well" a heck of a lot easier."

Day 22 - Say "Oh Well" to Disappointment

This is another good mantra to have at the ready. There are so many situations where you can't have what you want and need to make different choices than your friends or family. Saying "Oh Well" and then giving yourself credit is a good strategy. Today we had lunch out with friends and I ordered what I wanted.... but I didn't finish it all and left some on my plate. It was good quality and very tasty and the DH got to enjoy some of my leftovers. He agreed it was delish and that he would have ordered it given another opportunity. Last night I passed on dessert when everyone else was having homemade camp pies. Having sugar out of my system makes saying "Oh Well" a heck of a lot easier. I just need to remember to tell myself "Not my Food!"

Update: I need to remember when I buy food that I am wort h it to eat to get top quality. Buying good tasty fruit, veggies and condiments makes eating healthy much more enjoyable and less diet like.

My weight is the same today as it was last week.

(Here comes the excuse. Listen for it.) I am not exactly disappointed because we dined out last night and I think I am seeing salt weight. However it is time to be accountable. And accountable I am. Unlike a lot of Sparkers I need more accountability, not less. Oh. Well.

Kriszta your affirmation that after 20 minutes I will feel more full is so very true!

Weight is one pond less than last week - may be "real" loss or just fluctuation, but it is nice to see a number very close to my target.

I actually used this today. NO CHOICE and Oh Well.

Then I just walked away and forgot about it.

Good Day!

Day 22 - "Oh Well" to one bite of unplanned food. "No choice" I will not overeat and start over tomorrow. Desire to reach health goals is stronger than desire for food. Since Oct. 2017LCHF plan reduces cravings and hunger. First heard of ketogenic diet at college in 1999. Watched several films:

Like WalkMama, I use the "oh well" in other situation as well. It's helps me--kind like an acknowledgement or acceptance of what I need to do to reach my health and wellness goals "Oh well," no choice" and getting back on track" are all part of my daily mantras. At this stage my biggest struggles remain eating slowly/mindfully and tolerating hunger.

As for the weigh-in I'm at 199 lbs./90.3 kg. No weight loss from last week but -3 lbs./1.4 kg from three week ago

I use "oh well" for other disappointments, too, not just for things directly related to sticking to the plan. Agree with GOING-STRONG that this is a handy mantra to have.

I like the phrase, "Oh, well" it just works for me. Maybe because I don't see it is as disappointment. Can't have this or that in huge quantities like I did in the past, oh well, at least I don't weigh what I did in the past. I overate, oh well, I can get back on the diet next snack or meal...it just works.

I have broken through the plateau by being patient. I "only" lost .6 of a pound but it was a loss! I am feeling motivated!

This chapter ... had a life changing effect on me. To read of Judith's young son following a strict diet due to his epilepsy ... just lite me up.

I am following an elimination diet for 4ish months that my doc recommended due to my hypothyroidism, insulin resistance and pernicious anemia ... which are all intertwined. I am 6ish weeks into it.

My attitude is ... just do it. No questions. No excuses. Just do IT.

Oh, well kiddo.
