I'm prepared for tomorrow weigh in although I don't expect to see any decrease in weight because of an emotional binge last night. today is a better day, and I'm back on track. Maybe I'll be surprised --- but whatever I get, I'll deal with it. I've come a long way and have a short but difficult road ahead to shed the last few pounds.

Just what I needed to read. I am on a temporary upward trend that is going to stop right now and begin the downward trend I was experiencing before the travel and turmoil of a family visit!

Day 35 - Get Ready to Weigh In

I am really pleased with how my numbers have been going down and I am thankful for every pound. After putting on more than 10 pounds since last Fall I was feeling pretty down and really didn't like what I saw in the mirror. Now I am feeling better and have the controls back. Hooray!

Prepared for the scale tomorrow. Kriszta, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am creating a response card that has this part:

"...I have no power over how much I weigh on a certain day, it is result of my past actions, but I can choose actions that will determine the number I will see 1-2 weeks from now or later."

Prepare for tomorrow's weigh in - we should be ready to see the number on the scale as a data point that helps to evaluate the past 1-2 week's eating behaviors.
If I'm happy with the number . keep doing what I have been doing.
If not happy with the number - check if I practiced my skills properly or is there anything I can improve.
Either way, I have no power over how much I weigh on a certain day, it is result of my past actions, but I can choose actions that will determine the number I will see 1-2 weeks from now or later.

-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work

I'm 2 days late for Day 35 Weigh in, due to travel.
Day 15: 59.5 kg
Day 21: 59.4 kg
Day 28: 59.1 kg
Day 37: 59.9 kg and this is OK, I planned that I'd gain 1 or 2 pounds, as I always gain a little during travel despite eating well. Plus this is mid cycle time which always adds a few pounds.

This is my SP weight graph (start of BDS reboot marked with red):

That's awesome Jeanne. I hope to have that situation to report next year this time :)

Yay for maintaining and getting back on track, Kathleen and Strongdawg.

written Nov 4 - getting ready to weigh in
There are 3 possible outcomes, be ready how to respond.

Change what you are doing if you need to. Establish a calm and steady response.

I expect not to have a drop this week, because of not filing an eating plan the day before and eating away from home on Tuesday and Wednesday and hosting a dinner with friends on Thursday. If I stay under 130, I will be happy and try to lose 1-2 pounds next week. If I am over 130, I won't be as happy but I will do the same thing, try to lose 1-2 pounds next week.

Written Nov 5 after weighing
I am the same as last week, yay, 129.5.
My first 4 Beck Trek weigh-ins 130 – 128.5 – 129.5 - 129.5
I started the Beck Trek at 133 and the first weigh-in is 14 days into the Beck Trek. I broke through a 6 month plateau of 134 +/- 3 pounds. My goal weight is 122 and I am 5'4".

Some of the new habits are starting to show themselves. I am refraining from eating a bit more when my sabotaging thoughts say it is just a little bit, it won't matter. I am learning to tolerate hunger that is normal for weight loss daily calories. I am learning to resist hunger that is cravings or desire. I have more habit changes a la Beck to go, but I am giving myself credit for improvement from when I started this trek on October 1.

Due to travel, I'll weigh 2 days late, and I'm prepared to see a higher number on the scale, or the same at best. Despite walking 3+ hours daily and eating quite well, this is what happens always on vacations.

I've been very good about staying within calorie limits for the past few days. For the first time since my injury in July, I've been running in the evening. It feels good to be back at it. Despite this, I'm scared to weigh-in. It's been very hot this week. My ankles are swollen so I know I'm retaining water. Fingers crossed...

I am handling the weight-in well. I know that it will go up and down and sometimes I will not like what the scale says BUT I am committed and this is the way I am going to eat and exercise for life, so no matter what I just keep keeping on. Eventually the scale will go down.

I really liked Mazzy's reminders and the paper towel story.
When I weighed in I was a bit disappointed, but the good news is I have put the brakes on gaining and am staying the same. Soon there will be downward movement.

I tell you what i am really appreciating is the Weight Loss graph. I've never really stuck with doing one of those, and i started one this month, and even though i maintained one week two weeks ago, overall it's going down, and it looks great! That's very encouraging to be able to see the bigger picture.

I have it hanging on my fridge!

Losing weight is a tricky thing. Sometimes you work your butt off and your body is stressed so it retains water and you gain weight. Other times you feel you've eaten way too much but for some reason you lose. I just try to figure that if most of the time I'm eating well and exercising -- it will eventually come off. Hopefully before I'm 90!

this week, i'll remind myself that weekly weigh-ins provide me with the info to effectively manage my weight and that this is a long term habit. no more, no less...

having said that, this week will be interesting as i've made some adjustments to both my eating (increased calories cuz i felt run down) and exercise (adding weight lifting).

(snagged) cy of the paper towel story & shared below in prior post...

wow, the paper towels are really a good analogy. I've heard weight loss also described like peeling back layers of onions, but I've never quite heard it fully described....

emoticon a picture's worth 1,000 words, right? I've always enjoyed visual things that help me realize how much... like what = 10 lbs? my fav is having my pic taken holding a 10 lb bag of taters! I hope to have them piled at my feet when i'm done!

emoticon I think weight loss is a result of the actions we take over time... it was hard for me to realize that because i used to expect to see downward motion all the time.

emoticon after I weighed and tracked daily for about 3 months I began to realize it really is true that hormone fluctuations = water retention patterns and other things like salt can truly affect our weight... sometimes in recognizable regular patterns, but we are so very busy looking at the 1 result that day that we are crushed or feel terribly disappointed...

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon and for me, that disappointment often led to me throwing down the towel and eating myself silly for hours, days, weeks, and sometimes even months before i would finally try to "diet" again....

i reached points where i couldn't take it and would hide or jettison the scale...

emoticon ~ i go through different periods now... after I saw that my weight ping ponged like a bouncing super ball after I tracked those 3 months, i kept tracking and eventually quit feeling yanked by those daily fluctuations...

but this year, i've backpeddled more than not and regained what i had lost, and so seeing that real weight gain again feels like failure, like I can't do this... I will never do this, this feels so impossible!!!

emoticon but see, there's that old stinkin' thinkin (sabotaging thoughts)... that just aren't true.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon i did it before, i CAN do it again.

emoticon I just need to keep walking the walk, stay focused and keep doing all the new, healthy happy making kinds of things that help me, instead of all the old kinds of things that pull me down....

emoticon ~ also thought I'd share a link about the things that can affect our weight on the scale. It helped me also understand that this is a complex process...

(snagged) from a friend attributed originally to a "Bob White."

Let’s assume you go out and buy two rolls of paper towels, each with 112 paper towels on it. You put one aside, and keep it for future reference (your “before” picture). The other one represents you (I’ll call your paper towel “Ed”). The core represents the lean Ed. The towels represent the fat that is covering the lean Ed.

For sake of argument, let’s say that Ed wants to lose 28 pounds of fat, so (112/28) each sheet represents a quarter-pound of fat lost.

Let’s also assume that Ed loses his fat equally during each day of the program.

Each day during the first week, you tear a sheet off of Ed, representing the fat he has lost for the day. Next, you put Ed next to the full roll (“Big Ed”) for comparison.

No noticeable difference! Even at the end of the week!

"This can’t be working for me! This program sucks! "
But, you continue to follow your fat loss program. At the end of weeks two and three, you continue to compare Ed to Big Ed, and still notice very little difference.

But Ed is determined! He continues to work hard!

Three more weeks go by, the sheets peeling off day after day, before Ed gets up the courage to stand next to Big Ed again.

Now there’s a big difference!

By the end of the program (112 days), Ed is down to his lean dream, or somewhere near it. Big Ed is still - well, big.

The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around. And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area – just like that outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area.

While the outside sheet may only cover one layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you four times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the same – your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!

Let's keep removing the fat one sheet at a time.

Get Ready to Weigh In!

Reminders:

Keep expectations realistic. Today I should probably weigh somewhere between 1/2 to 2 pounds more or less than my last weigh in.

Use the scale as information to guide my efforts.

Remain "problem solving oriented."

Remain objective.

Reminder: Read NO CHOICE, IT'S NOT OKAY cards, and plan to practice different techniques when I recognize sabotaging thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

Limit myself when eating out... plan ahead.

Mistakes... Get Back on Track... NOW

Awarness Practice... Awareness consciousness... Observe thoughts.

Get Ready to Weigh in.

Quoting Dr. Beck:

"Once I develop realistic expectations for weight loss, dieting will be easier."

Before getting on the scale I remind myself to keep my expectations realistic.

Last week I weighed 159.5 on 12/10/07.
Today I should probably weigh somewhere between 1/2 to 2 pounds more or less than that.
Today's weight: 160.5
Weight Change: 1 pound up

OH, WELL... accept it and move on. I did.

Reminder: Remain "problem solving oriented." Review menus and calorie intake for last week. Decide to decrease my calorie intake, or exercise more, or continue the same.

Reminder: I'm learning to use the scale as information to guide my efforts.

I know how you feel, Mazzy. I really think I've been doing a good job eating and I've been moving constantly! But I'm sure it'll even out someday!

Get Ready to Weigh-in:

Last week I weighed 159.5. Today I should probably weigh somewhere between 1/2 to 2 pounds more or less than that.

I weighed myself today... I remained the same. I worked hard this week, however, for whatever reason my body did not release any weight.

I went through a string of emotions initially, however, it's time to give myself an OH, WELL moment... accept it and move on. And I will.

I agree, Mary! It is wonderful to get excited about seeing the people and not just "what's to eat!"

Hey everyone here is doing so well for this time of year. I'm proud of all of you
My weighin is Friday and I am preparing for it. Sandy, I know how you feel. I always had the mindset of thinking about what I didn't eat and not what I did eat.
Funny how we could find a way to rationalize overeating isn't it? This is turning out to be a wonderful Christmas season. I am not so focused on the food but more looking forward to getting together with family and friends. There will be food there but it is not so important. Getting down to a weight where I will no longer be obese is very important and its just 8 more pounds away.

I know what you mean. I gained 0.4 lb. this week; I'm pretty sure I'm PMSing or it could be that I'm exhausted, but in the past I would've said "Forget it, I passed up all of those cookies and I still didn't lose -- I'm eating!". And would've gained 10 pounds till New Year. But I know I've been eating pretty well; maybe a few extra picks at dinner that I should cut out -- but I know I feel better and I'm sticking with it!

I think making friends with the scale and learning to keep my expectations realistic is another step that is helping keep me on track.

I never thought I needed to get ready to weigh-in... I used to get on the scale and be happy if I lost or disappointed if I didn't, however, the fact is that too many times I didn't like what I read on the scale and it was enough to sabotage my weight loss efforts.

LOL... so these days I'm learning to get ready to weigh-in.

Good Job! I'm weighing in tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it. I seem to be PMSing; I'm menopausal and you can have the bloating and weight gain without the actual period. So I feel slighty puffy. Maybe it won't be too bad, but I don't want to go back to the 190's. Even if I do though I know it's just temporary. My eating has been pretty good and my activity has been really good. Oh well!

before I got on the scale this morning, I too reminded myself that I weighed 181 last week and that I expect to be plus/minus 1/2 to 2 pounds. I don't know that I believe that yet, but I'm going to keep reminding myself anyway and eventually I'll believe it!

Before I step on the scale tomorrow, I'm going to remind myself:

Last week, I weighed 163. Today, I should probably weigh somewhere between 1/2 pound to 2 pounds more or less than that, however, I faced several food challenges, and I may need to accept another scenario.

My plan is to keep my expectations realistic... have an OH, WELL response ready and move on.

Quoting from the Beck Diet Solution:

"Once I develop realistic expectations for weight loss, dieting will be easier."

I'm really starting to see the scale just as a tool that provides information. I now have the tools to respond to any sabotaging thoughts provided by the scale that may trigger frustration, disappointment or discouragement... "OH, WELL... I don't like this but I'm going to accept it and move on."

Sandy that sounds good. I just found the exercise one today and figured how I had to copy it and edit it. We really need that now that we are at the end of the book. Sandy you do such a wonderful job here on this forum. Thank you so much.

Yay!! I was thinking of making a chart for weigh-ins like the one for exercise -- where you keep marking it in the same post -- to make it more visible?! What do you think?

Wow, this chapter marks the end of the fifth week using the Beck solution. It has actually been 9 weeks for me. I started it and then found this group here and started again. I made myself the graph in microsoft excel and I am marking it now. Looking at the graph does reinforce positive emotions. It shows me in black and white that I am working this solution and losing weight.

The longer you are in your weight loss / healthy eating regime, the better the chance that you will eventually hit a plateau or not lose as much as you think you should. This is one reason why I don't like to weigh too often; although with that new digital scale it is more tempting. I would rather gauge my success in eating by how good I feel; have I been making good eating choices? am I still exercising? If yes, I'm successful -- no matter what the scale says! Of course, it's great when it keeps going down!!
