Renee, can you read your memory card? Also, get this information you shared with us to you sleep doctor immediately.

Kiwi, NZ is now on my bucket list. You live in beautiful country.

I have been sick for almost two weeks now since having a tooth pulled. Antibiotics upped three times. Lots of other weird symptoms not related fever or bacteria. Advice doctor wants me to return to urgency care. Frankly I don't feel up to it although the fever stopped several days ago. I think this is the only post I am up to today.

Does the setting on your CPAP need adjusting? How long since you have been checked by your Sleep Dr/Nurse?Physiologist?

Are you worried about anything? If so, have a notebook by your bed and write down what you are worrying about. Then let it go. During the day have a look at what you wrote. Is there any way you can do something about your concerns? An option is talking with your Dr and asking for a referral to a Therapist if there are concerns.

Is your room too hot/cold? Adjusting your thermostat or opening/shutting a window can help with that.

Is it too noisy? If there is excessive noise you can't do anything about, ear plugs might help, or have a little relaxing white music or talk-back turned on.

Good luck,
Kris

I have been having trouble sleeping at night no matter if I have my CPAP machine on or not. I do sleep but there are times it feels like I am not getting enough sleep. I wake up tired and I am like that all day long. Hopefully the doctor will figure out something that will help.

My house was in this a few times. Where he landed is just a 3 minute walk, if that, from home and is now almost totally covered in new houses.

My shoes/slippers area always right by my bed, and there is a pair right beside my ranch slider. I absolutely HATE walking around barefooted, even in the house (unless it is a stinking hot day inside) None of the dogs we owned ever took off with any shoes, and 2 of the dogs were pups when we got them. If I had to get out of my place because of flooding, it would be quite an issue, because the flooding would be the ocean water - I live at sea level only about 400 meters from the water LOL! That's why we have had to be evacuated one time re a Tsunami threats when there was a huge catastrophic earthquake in Samoa, and have been on stand-by to evacuate a couple other times re major earthquakes.

Keep track of your shoes! The '94 earthquake taught me how important it is to have your shoes right by your bed. We didn't have damage, but needed to get outside quickly and lots of people had broken glass everywhere. I imagine with severe storms that could be an issue also.

There were over 1000 strikes of lightening recorded in ONE hour during that storm. It was great here this a.m. and until early a/noon. Then it got unseasonably hot/humid. I was walking down my passage and there was an almighty flash of lightening. It actually lit the room up in the middle of the day! It was almost immediately followed by an equally impressive crash of thunder. The thunder and lightening has been rumbling on since then - the last 2-3 hours.

Did you find your missing shoe? Was Buds the culprit??? LOL!

WOW - that's heaps just for that.

I got woken at 0300hrs by a humungous thunder/lightening storm and real heavy rain. I was awake for quite some time and it was still going when I went back to sleep. The whole place was lighting up left, right and centre.

I looked conversion on USD vs NZD and that is an excellent filling price comparatively. I paid $300. just for the dentist to file the rough edge off my broken filling which we aren't fixing till after January. Two more days till my lower tooth comes out. I will be so glad to be back on antibiotics. I just feel sick all the time. Want to quit fighting infection.

Buds and I went to the dog fair today. Ran into my good friends I worked with for 20 years. We still see each other every couple months for book club.

Sounds like the New Zealand system is more reasonable than ours. Still not perfect, but most of us don't ask for perfect, just manageable.

I got that filling fixed today. It cost $194 .... I had allowed for about $220, so I was pleased. He told me it was a very old filling, and likely done when I was still at school. I LEFT school 50 years ago LOL!

In New Zealand MOST children under 14yrs have free visits to a GP for standard stuff, including out of hours, providing they are going to their enrolled Medical Centre. The same applies to prescriptions. Most of their normal dental work is free while they are at school, too. They have to pay for braces, tho'!

Anyone who is on a benefit in NZ who has a bank balance of less than $300 can get free urgent dental work (replacement fillings etc.) up to a certain value and we don't have to pay for it. Some of the time I had mine replaced for free, but it doesn't apply to a hygienist, and a couple times I forgot to get a quote and take it to WINZ so I wouldn't have to pay. When the Dentist realized that the last time I went to him, he cut my bill right back, which was really nice of him.

Yes, I remember the dental dams etc. and complaints about my mouth not being big enough either.

Yes to the benefits of hitting a certain age. Grateful to get the financial help for the teeth and vision. USA does not have much in the way of public health options. With our prior president we did start getting medical benefits for all children. Not sure that is going to last though.

Altho' some New Zealander's have health insurance cover, for the majority it isn't worth it. It's good for if you have to have hip/knee replacement surgery and want to get in quicker. It was good for my daughter who had to have a corneal transplant for each eye, and long-time ongoing checks. She has since cancelled the insurance because she was discharged from the Eye Clinic, and just goes to the Optician now. I cancelled my health insurance because the premiums were waaaay more than the refunds. We have free public hospitals, and a large percentage of medical practices have fairly cheap Dr's visits. Mine is $19 per visit. Once a family or single person has reached 20 prescriptions in a year the majority of the next scripts for that year are free. The downside is that we have to pay full dental costs. The only positive for me is that my Dentist told me if I need to get my teeth removed it would have to be done in a Public Hospital because I would need general anesthetic. I can't open my mouth very wide and each time to a to the Dentist I have to have a mouth block to hold my mouth open enough - (a TODDLER's mouth block ... the smallest one they have, and even that is a struggle) because I would need to have my jaw broken to extract them. 2 Dentists have told me I would not be able to manage false teeth because I would never be able to get them in my mouth.

I went to the Hygienist today. YEP - my filling is broken but the piece that broke off is wedged firmly between my teeth, so I now have an appointment with the Dentist for Wednesday. $168 for the hygienist and probably $200 or more for the Dentist :-( I'm just glad I am off my Invalid's benefit and now on Superannuation (old age pension) because I got a considerable pay rise in the process LOL!

Sounds like you are making full use of your insurance benefits this year. I have two implants for 25 years and am very happy with them. My dentist specializes in implants and even teaches them at a dental college. Just expensive.

Dentist buffed on the back tooth trying to take off the sharp edge that is catching food I can't get with the brush and floss.. It helped a little, but not perfect. We are going to wait till January to do anything about that tooth when I have more insurance again. In the meantime he is not prescribing anymore antibiotics, so thinks the other tooth needs to be pulled sooner rather than later. I have appt. on Sept. 9th to do that. Then one on the 25th to see about the implant with the periodontist.

7:30AM Dental Appointment????? MAN, THAT IS EARLY!!!

I take it you are addicted to sugar LOL!

I have a dental appointment on Wednesday, but that is only for a clean. I THINK a little bit of filling has broken off one of my teeth and if it has, the Hygienist will tell me and I'll make an appointment for the Dentist.

Ate too much sugar last night and woke dizzy again. REALLY need to remember that. I also have a dental appt. at 7:30 AM to check out the infection again. So may get this under control yet. Hope, I can actually get to sleep on time. Bud has been getting me up the last few nights at 5:30 so he can go out, but I usually just sleep walk and go back to bed till 7:00 AM. I will set the alarm for 5:30 take him out and then get ready. I can do this. LOL

Thank you. A friend thought it might be my infected tooth. It is kicking up again. I googled tooth infections and dizziness and that is a thing. I left message for dental team on Friday. No notice back from them yet. However, I have amped up the airborne and oatmeal and chicken protein a bit. And I do feel better. I should check my blood sugars with the dizzy spells. That is also a good idea. My A1Cs are like 5.2 I think. They were smack in the middle of normal last time I checked.

I've heard of others who had dangerous reactions to extremely low carb diets. Then I know of others who love it. I guess we need to know ourselves.

I don't ever recall a time when I had no appetite. Do you check your bloods with a blood glucose monitor?

No appetite yesterday, I wondered about low blood sugar so ate carbs in the form of some spaghetti from the freezer and an air fried potato from the garden. I feel so much better.

Cathy, don't ignore symptoms like dizzy and weak. If you don't want to call the doctor right away at least write down how you are feeling and then compare 3 days of notes.

dizzier and weaker today. Been trying to pace myself better and drinking more fluid. I think a nap might help. I do love the luxury of stretching and slowly getting out of bed. Very decadent like a good chocolate.

I can get right up, but it feels more luxurious (since I retired) to lie in bed for a few minutes, cuddle my cats and check messages on my phone. Generally one very early morning trip to the potty.

I'm surprised too Pre-cpap, I was a five trip a night to the loo, post cpap 0-1 night trips. They told me the apnea events trigger a reflex and hormone that makes us need to pee, which wakes us and helps keep us from not waking at all.

I need a nap, but I really want to mow the lawn first. It is cool and dry. A good combo for making the yard nice.

I have always been like that re waking, except not the grumpiness. I am worse in the winter because I hate getting out into cold air. Since the HRV has been installed it is a lot warmer when I wake. My bedroom is the South/West side of the house but the morning sun is the North/East side.

I USED to get up 2-4 times during the night for the loo but since I have lost the weight, I hardly ever have to get up. When I did the night at the Sleep Clinic, the Physiologist was surprised I didn't need the loo lol.

So glad you figured out the humidifier was the issue. Always a learning curve.

Just finished the 23&me research quiz on aging. They asked if we had trouble waking in the morning and if it was hard to get out of bed. Frankly, I don't every remember popping out of bed even as a child. I usually went through a long quasi sleep period with lots of dreams and wakings unless I was forced out of bed to go to school and then I dragged myself around the house grumpy for an hour. Even now, I stretch and wiggle for a half hour before climbing out of bed. So question: Do you get up easily or do your struggle out of bed?

PS: I don't drink caffeine and I get 7-8 hours sleep and usually never get up in the middle of the night. I am also eating healthy now and getting all my water drank.

I got my HRV installed yesterday so hopefully it does the trick of warming/drying the house in winter and decreasing humidity and temps in the summer .... especially at night time when it is generally more humid.

Ahhhh sleep is a blessing!!

My husband woke up about the same time I was trying to figure out what was wrong (filter was fine, hose seemed on correctly etc) and he asked if the water tank was in all the way?

Reseated it and it worked normally, no issues and I conked on out for another 3-4 hour hitch! yay!

Woke up with my AirSense 10 (ResMed) acting wonky... I need to break down and fiddle with logging into the Apria system to order more supplies. Long Story. So I’m a little sleepy now... not sure if it’s a filter issue or what. I know I need a new mask but this was something like the machine’s “rhythm” seemed “off”.. I’m gonna go back to sleep and see if I can figure it out.

You did some amazing volunteer work. Like you I feel a little guilty, but my health and the grandkids come first. So I don't commit to anything.

Back in my 40s and 50s, I taught Sunday School, directed the VBS program and put in a good 10 hours extra a week on my job to make sure my students had a quality program. I feel just as tired now after spending an hour on housework. Oh well, just keep eating right and getting good sleep. Luckily, I don't have to work for a living and I have just enough income to visit friends and relatives and play a little and get my medical needs met. Life is good.

Sometimes I feel guilty that I have all the time in the world but I don't volunteer anymore, but then I remind myself of all the years that I did.

I had a very quiet day for most of it today. There was no internet at all, not even my mobile data would work, so I decided I would go into town and get my groceries. I got out of my scummy clothes and got into some decent ones at 2p.m. .... Murphy's Law - the internet came back on. Still, I went I did what needed to be done, a day early, and hopefully in better weather than tomorrow brings.

The main thing I did as a volunteer was being a First Responder for St John. I did that for about 15 years and was a Divisional Manager for a number of them.

Cool about the maternity wing.

My little contribution is to paint rocks advertising "Spirit of Halloweentown" to help the local tourist economy. Free publicity for all the mom and pop shops in downtown. Also fun and free thing to do for all the kids that come to visit.

Sadly we won't have Marnie to visit this year. She has two movies in the works. I do think that we need to expand what we offer and maybe work on different themes. I kind of am getting bored with the same, same. So guessing others might not be willing to drive so far to visit our quirky little community if they think it is going to be the same too.

When I am overwhelmed with the human condition, sometimes all I am able to do is to look around and find a small way to be positive. Vote for someone who can make change happen or support those already in office who are working on it. Nothing to do with homelessness, but my small contribution the last few weeks has been working with a coalition that successfully kept the maternity unit open in our local hospital. On to my next project as a local gadfly.

It really is a shame that suitable and affordable housing isn't available for those who need it. New Zealand's seemed to come to a head after the two Christchurch earthquakes. So many houses were destroyed or damaged, that a lot of the builders and other tradies in the North Island when down to the South Island to help out. With the added immigration influx the need for housing increased even more. Then of course the Landlords put their rentals up to an unrealistic amount because of the demand, but unfortunately a lot of people couldn't then afford to stay in them. It's a vicious circle.

Our town is building transitional housing which is great, but our own people get pushed aside for the homeless from Portland. Even if they do get in it, that leaves a void on the streets. People bus in hearing the news and hoping they can also get in on the services. Our community does not have the infrastructure to cope. We really need to get that mayor in Portland to be more proactive. In the meantime, I am back to what can I personally do. Things flit around in my mind. I could volunteer at the warming center or the food bank. I could volunteer at the schools to help children learn to read and maybe inspire one or two foster children to step out of the generational poverty system. I don't know. Maybe I could research this. The heart says one thing and my body says I am over taxing it. Maybe my job is just making sure my grandchildren thrive.

Even subsidized housing is less effective than it used to be. It is called Section 8 here for the law that created it. There are not enough vouchers, the wait can be a couple of years, and fewer landlords are willing to accept the amount on the voucher when a house can be rented for much more on the open market.

In NZ the Government has often been paying for a lot of those without homes and unable to find one, to stay in Motels, but they only get a certain period of time. During the Winter, a South Auckland (Te Puea Memorial) Marae was opened for homeless. (A Marae is a Maori Meeting ground) They provided food, showers the Marae building to sleep in. They had some Social Workers involved and had more luck in finding a lot of them housing than the official channels. I haven't heard if they are doing it again this year, but I certainly hope that they are, along with other centres.

Rentals in NZ are really expensive. Even in the so-called low price areas it isn't uncommon for a basic house (that in some cases leaves a lot to be desired) to be $500 or more per week.

I am seeing more "official" efforts on the issues of people without homes, but I think when it comes down to it, mostly it is a one person or family at a time issue. I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for years, and while it does get lower income people into decent homes it does not work with homeless people. Apparently zoning issues for years kept night time shelters from providing daytime services in my area and that is now getting fixed, so more services will be there for those who want them. Housing people with mental illness is even more complicated.

I don't remember anyone being homeless in my town growing up. It was pretty safe to hike the trails to the pool and school. I wasn't suppose to, but I would do it with groups of friends. Anyway, no evidence of camping anywhere. Recently the local park closed their overnight camping because it had become a homeless camp and the parents with children started complaining. Still people were pitching tents on the perimeter of it. Walking Buds I stumbled across a tent city in a vacant lot.adjacent from the park. They also camp by the river. The showers from the courthouse are near and so are stores. Read a wonderful article yesterday. I asked google what caused homelessness. The article was an interview consisting of several different people's viewpoint including a former homeless person, police officers, different agency personnel and a statistician who tracks trends. Anyway this homeless person did not want to be homeless, but talked about the cycle of despair and how hard it was to break away and how unsafe it was. Just trying to find a place to pee safely was an ordeal. The stores all have locks on their restrooms. So you can't waltz into McDonalds unless you order $5.00 worth of food. I have personally seen this. The police said his job was to visit these camps and get acquainted with everyone and hook them up with the social services. Many don't want to leave their drug induced life. Many are mentally ill and afraid to change. Some like the woman interviewed are very grateful for an opportunity to move on. Other's tell them they like the freedom and adventure of living on the streets. The statistician was alarming. The trend has taken a severe upswing. Former foster children are frequently in those numbers. At 18 they are tossed out of the system, with the likely possibility of not learning life skills because of frequent moves. I keep thinking I should do something to help other than knitting hats. I guess I will know what I need to do when the time comes.

The homeless is one of the biggest 'take-aways' for me. I was stunned at how many were in Vancouver. My son said that it was the homeless centre of Canada because the climate is more forgiving than a lot of other places in Canada. I was also stunned at the number in Seattle. We get them in NZ, but not really in those numbers and mostly in the bigger cities.

I have not been to San Francisco since I was six. Portland used to be one of the most livable cities in the US. Now it is expensive and dirty like Seattle. I am glad I don't live there anymore, but I still love the city and drive to it frequently. It just makes me sad. I wish the mayor would do more about getting services to the homeless population and get them off the sidewalks and into some kind of safe shelter area.

What I remember most about SF was Chinatown. It was so fun and so real. Wares were piling out the door and onto the sidewalk. Victoria's Chinatown was beautiful, but definitely touristy. Portland's Chinatown is overrun by the homeless and filth. There is a beautiful arch and garden in there, but that is about it. I avoid it now.

Yes - my son and his husband are in Vancouver BC. They have gone to a lot of gay pride stuff, and in fact they were married in San Fransisco City Hall - in part because that is the Gay Capital and also because it is a beautiful place re setting and photos. I was struck by how clean and well presented most of Vancouver was when we went there in 2016 (around Granville Island and the CBD where they live), but when they took us down to Seattle for a few days, (we were around the Pike Market and the Space Needle) I was stunned by how dirty it appeared in a lot of the streets. I really enjoyed going on the Mono rail there. It was a great experience and reminded me of The Jetsons (the kids' futuristic cartoon) The Glaciers calf in NZ, too and some of them are quite spectacular - not that I've seen them in person, but they have shown them on TV News when a big one has occurred. They can cause tsunamis.

If possible, I suggest seeing as much of Alaska as soon as you can manage. Lots of great things will always be there, but it is changing rapidly. We enjoyed watching the glaciers calf (the term for bug chunks falling off into the ocean or bay), but it was also sad because it means they are warming up and melting away. A lot of wildlife can't adjust to warmer temperatures.

I am assuming you mean Vancouver BC. I am a stones throw from Vancouver Washington.

Vancouver BC is beautiful. Very clean. Probably some of that is left over from the olympics. DD, GD and I drove there last year for a mini vacation. We went through during pride week too. Very colorful. Lots of rainbows about.

One of my sister-in-law's went on an Alaskan Cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it. My son lives in Vancouver and he has said he wouldn't mind going on one. Perhaps one day when I get to go and see him again, we might be able to go on one, IF he and his husband can get the time off work.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise. Alaska is an interesting place. Two of my cousins lived there for years. One still lives there part time and writes about it extensively.

The ship itself was quite entertaining. LOVED Skagway and the train trip to Frazier. Walked around Juneau and Ketchican. Really the only other side trip I might have wanted to take was the boat trip to Sawyer Glacier. I was seasick the first two days and then fine. Then I was landsick the first two days back and then fine. Loved being rocked to sleep.

Kiwi, I hope your GS is recouping from the stones. They are bad enough for girls let alone the poor guys. My friend takes pills to break hers up although she has had surgery too. One of her blood pressure medicines was contributing to their formation. She is working to change her diet and get on top of this.

Cathy, you may want to pick one or two side trips/activities during your cruise. But don't worry too much about booking ahead. I don't think the cost changes much. We did find a good deal in Alaska for a trip at the next stop, but if you take one not affiliated with the cruise line there is always the risk that if something happens and you return late the ship sails without you, if it is an affiliated trip the ship waits or they figure out how to get you caught up. In several of the Alaska stops we just got off and wandered around town and saw a nice museum.

I had to drive down to the hospital last night re my older g/son. He went by ambulance from his home town. I stayed with him all night (he tends to get a bit anxious at times in places like that, by himself) and brought him back to him home late a.m. I was up for 28 hours straight. It appears he has a kidney stone. Hopefully it is small enough to pass but if he is anything like his grandfather (kidney stones 3x Plus gall stones) and surgical removal all 4 times because the k.stones were massive) he may need a little assistance with it. I managed a 4hr sleep after I got home.

I am on the Carnival Legend, and I noticed that about the sales pitches for all the extras they are selling just on the website. First cruise, so other than the train trip to Skagway, I think I will just have fun exploring the ship. I don't think I need bubble packages, spa packages, or other destination packages.

Wow, Lady Gaga can do elegant too. She has such a powerful voice.

My sis does transatlantic cruises and they had also booked a river cruise on the Rhine and it flooded while there, so they didn't get to do that cruise.

So, I did a river cruise on a funky little boat on the river that is seven blocks from my house. It was fabulous and more fun because it was like exploring secret rooms. Whole different perspective. Have you checked into local river cruises? They could be even more fun than a European one and you get to sleep in your own bed at night if it is just an eight hour cruise.

Ugh.... I shouldn't complain but the wailing singer just popped into the ball park and I was going to take Buds for a walk. He puts on head phones and sings at the top of his lungs to the most awful stuff. He is polluting his brain and mine too with the lyrics. The issue is that, he might have a decent singing voice if he joined a choir somewhere or even the karaoke group at the Alana club which is next to the ball park. Also yesterday when I walked Buddy too close to him he got up and started walking across the grass. He stopped picked something off the ground and put it in his mouth. I was totally grossed out because everyone in the neighborhood uses this park to walk their dogs. They may pick up after them, but you know. Ewww..... Anyway, later that evening Buds took me to the same area and there are a bunch of small high topped mushrooms growing there...makes me wonder if he isn't from the rehab place a few blocks over. Probably the only place he can sing to his hearts content. He really doesn't bother anyone other than I think he is rotting his brain with lyrics. Also the sleeper was back, but he didn't stay long. He just drops his stuff and collapses in the grass like he has passed out. I called the police the other night to make sure he wasn't in a diabetic coma. If he would just lay a tarp out under him, I would not be so worried. Again, he doesn't really bother anyone. Other people take naps. We even had a young alert college age guy spend the night in a tent. He was on his way to the beach and was hoping no one would notice.

The park is quite entertaining.

Enjoy your cruise! We did a Viking river cruise two years ago and loved it. It kinda spoiled us though. Last year we took an Alaska cruise and it seemed like they were trying to get more money out of us every time we turned around. Art sales, junk sales, extra charge meals, you name it. But it was much less expensive and we did have a good time and saw some amazing scenery that may not be there much longer. Of course the best part and the reason we chose that cruise was that my cousin was on board doing presentations about Alaska wildlife and his book.
I have friends who have gone on European river cruises other than Viking who highly recommended the others. And I think they were less expensive, so check around before giving up on the idea.

I have NEVER IN MY LIFE been to a bridal shower.

I loved listening to Lady Gaga singing with Tony Bennett. She seems to do any style effortlessly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ013viL6rs

I envy you your cruise. I've always wanted to do a River Cruise in Europe. Only problem is, they are pretty much unaffordable LOL!

Hi everyone. Trying to rustle up some lurkers with a new chat thread.

Went to a fun bridal shower yesterday. We wore crowns with celebrity names on them. GD won in less than five guesses. She had Elvis. I had Lady Gaga. I do admire her. When her and Elton John sang together, I got goose bumps. It was quite beautiful although her get up was over the top. But then Elton John always used to dress over the top too.

Only two more days till the cruise and then I may be silent for a week. Only bringing kindle. although I am going to purchase the wifi package so I have FB to stay in contact with family while I am gone.
