I like that story, Tish!

Hope everyone will enjoy their Friday and the upcoming weekend. I, for one, am looking forward to turning the clocks back this weekend. It is a rainy day here, but I don't have to go anywhere, which is good. I have to re-record my CD for this month. I used it yesterday, and it would stop almost at the end of a song, then come back on and play the last few seconds. I just got a new machine, so I'm thinking that's part of the problem. I'm also selling my big machine, because it's heavy and just not what I had hoped for.

Have a great day and God bless! emoticon

A Halloween story.... One year I was practicing my flute inbetween doorbell rings for trick-or-treaters. I had recently bought a ghost thingy that makes noises when you clap or slam a door. I was playing my traditional halloween fare (some eery music) and decided to play some scales. I was home alone. The ghost started going off all on its own and it freaked me out! That is, until I figured out it was set off by my highest notes in the scale, haha!

Hi, KELLCO123 and welcome! I just had to order a new karaoke machine for my singing. I have had one for over 4 years and it's starting to crackle a bit. I also have a PA system that I use for recording CDs and other 'stuff'.

Sang at a TBI residential facility yesterday. I really do enjoy my 'work'! God bless and have a great evening!

I am so thankful and happy to be able to start singing again. I was supposed to go to a nursing home and assisted living last week, but couldn't stand that long with my swollen ankle. I went to a nursing home this morning, and it always makes me happy to be able to sing for the residents. I have six 'regular' places each month, and get some calls for other places some months. I sing mostly southern gospel and the old hymns. It is wonderful to see some of the residents, especially ones with Alzheimers, come out at times and start singing along with me.

Have a great day, all! emoticon

Today I signed on to join a band! Wow. Never thought I'd do that. We'll rehearse for 3 months and then give a performance, maybe with another 1 or 2 bands. This will definitely take my music to a new stage. A local music school organizes these bands to encourage fledging musicians to develop their performance skills.

Let me blow my own horn here for a minute. (Pun intended) I just made it into an auditioned vocal ensemble here in Birmingham. The choir is Colla Voce. and is dedicated to performing sacred music from chant to modern. There are 36 members in the choir which is conducted by Dr. Tim Banks recently retired choral director from Samford University. I'm excited to have an opportunity to sing some really excellent and challenging music outside my church job. Ok, what does that have to do with diet and exercise? Did you know you get cardio points for playing an instrument? I assume that goes for singing as well. I'm just sayin'.

Not much music-making in my life for the moment. Gave our last performance on a play saturday where I played the ukulele and sang my own text to "the nickelodeon". Itīs time to start thinking about next summers music...

Hi, I just joined this group and already have been MIA and will continue to be. My dad passed unexpectedly last week so I've been up at the farm cleaning and making plans with mom as to what she will do. Going back up this week, and will bring her home next Saturday to stay with us indefinitely.

Hi, looks like this is a good place to say hi I'm new to this team, fairly new to SP. LOVE music! I play flute and piano. My daughter plays flute also. My son sings, plays guitar, writes his own songs, is heavily involved in chapel with a major in worship ministries at college. Husband sings, plays guitar. Gonna read down now and see what's up with everyone else here :)

I directed my first choir rehearsal for my new church job last night. It was exhilarating to get behind the conductors podium once again. I love choral work. This church has a great bunch of singers in the choir and they love traditional choral literature. Hey... do I get cardio for conducting?

We could establish the SparkPeople Music Conference in some central location. Preferably in a resort area so we could have some extra curricular activity. Make it a two or three day event with two or three conference leaders, concerts by Music Makers Team members, and of course play. There could be music sessions as well as nutrition and exercise sessions. We would all get to meet one another face to face, share our mtual musical talent and get healthy doing it. I know, I'm dreaming, but it was a fun dream.

That WOULD be fun ~ so many different instruments and styles. But we could be at whatever weight, age, and stage we are; music and our journey toward health would be the things that bring us together.

Hey, wouldn't it be cool if everyone on this team could come together at some central location and put on a concert. Just think of all the different instruments and abilities represented here. Oh, and we would all be thin and trim while doing it. Now that would be really cool.

My 4th of July was the best ever! Played a concert on the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor. We supplemented our orchestra with members of the military band. It was fun having Navy uniforms intermingled with us. They were great! Toured the ship and hung out with musician friends. The bad part is I caught a bug and am now very sick with no energy. We walked a lot on Hawaii and I was hoping to keep the momentum going when I returned home but all I can do is read for about a 1/2 hour and then I have to sleep. Hope this is over soon because I need to get active again.

Happy Father's Day! (My father is deceased and my husband is working so no celebration here).

Going fluting with friends today. We get together once a month for a reading session with about 10 flute players.

HI, just started and found your team. I started learning to play the clarinet in February. It's fun and frustrating. I found some books with cd's to play along with which is helpful for timing especially for me!

Had a good concert today. It was our finale concert of the year. Off from that until September. We had a good line-up (wind ensemble):

American Overture
Selections from Wicked
Country Gardens (Grainger being "bad")
Russian Christmas Music
(Intermission)
a French military march (very unusual)
An American in Paris
Incantation and Dance

Next for me is playing on the USS Missouri ship for our military in Pearl Harbor (70th anniversary) and a concert in the auditorium in Honolulu. It is such an honor to play for this--it will be very moving I'm sure.

Oh, I love the oboe and flute interplay in that one! So sad that our oboist who played it with me was killed in a car crash at 26 years old. Such a loss, he was a huge talent. That was over 10 years ago.

I am dreading the different key of the piccolo part to Stars and Stripes that I will be playing this summer. I usually play the band version but will be playing the orchestra version in Hawaii on the Missouri ship for 4th of July Salute to Valor. I am so honored.

Tonight I rehearsed with a pianist for over 3 hours. Great fun. Read through a bunch of music to plan a flute/piano duo concert in a week and a half.

I ALSO had a busy weekend of performances! I performed in a fundraising event at a church on Friday and Sunday night, playing an Easter Cantata. On Saturday, the community band in which I perform traveled to Nashville for a festival, and I received a lot of excellent reviews from my fellow band members, as well as from members in other bands, for my solos in Rossini's Italian in Algiers Overture. It's a tough piece, especially because I had to learn it for Central City also, but the band arrangement is in a different key!

Auditioned for the principal oboe spot of the Central City Opera last Monday! I didn't win the audition, nor did I advance out of my round, but I was up against some pretty tight competition (including the former principal of the Houston Grand Opera, who won the audition), so I wasn't disappointed. I was actually very proud of myself. The other oboists were fabulous...this was definitely the most competitive audition I've taken to date. But I feel like I really held my own! I didn't let their technique or tone get me down, and in the audition I was confident in my playing. I felt like I was an equal to much of the competition, and although some people were stronger in certain areas of playing than I am, I had something of my own that they didn't have to offer. I also felt AMAZING about my reedmaking skills. I've never thought that I was a good reedmaker, but for the past couple of months, every reed I've started has been playable and concert-worthy. For the first time, I felt GOOD about not winning an audition because I know I'm getting better at the process! I feel like my success with Sparkpeople over the past several weeks has given me the confidence in many other areas of my life, and that's really important!

I'm kind of taking it easy this week. It's spring break (yeah, we had ours late this year). Going to see my daughter's senior recital this weekend. Looking forward to it. emoticon

We had our final rehearsal before our concert last night. Things went fairly well.
We will be performing the 2nd and 4th movements of Dvorak's Symphony in E minor plus we have a couple of young ladies who perform with the Madison, WI opera singing with us and will perform Habanera and Sequidilla from Carmen. I am looking forward to the concert on Saturday night.

Have a nice evening.

-Julie

Welcome, Julie!

I haven't posted on here for a while, although I've been active on SparkPeople, so I thought I'd chime in.

I am a middle school band director and right now my 2 concert bands just finished playing for our state festivals and both groups earned superior ratings. I was very proud of them!

My symphonic band (top group with 80+ 6-8th graders) is now preparing for our upcoming performance in the National Adjudicators Invitational in Chicago at the end of the month. They are playing 2 newer compositions that i really like:

Spirit of Troy by Ralph Ford
Spitfire! by Gary P. Gilroy

Have a great day everyone!

I'm new to this team so I thought I would say Hi.

I play the cello in a community orchestra and a string quartet. I play for my own enjoyment.
Our spring concert is coming up in a few weeks.

Have a good evening!

Julie

Fun concert! I love Frank Tichelli! We recently played his Angels in the Architecture. Awesome piece. Glad your concert went well! I love wind ensemble music. Our next wind ensemble concert is in May. The first rehearsal for that one is tonight. Fun times!

Here is an overdue response. Tomorrow we (a wind ensemble) are playing:

Heroic Saga - Robert Jager
March, Op. 99 - Prokofiev
Amazing Grace - Ticheli
English Folk Song Suite - Vaughan Williams (a classic!)
Fanfare Prelude on "God of Our Fathers" - Curnow
George Washington Bicentennial March - Sousa
A Touch of Cohan - Applebaum
Variants on a Medieval Tune - Dello Joio

I subbed for a sub in a community symphony this week. It was interesting, especially when the freeway onramps were closed when I tried to drive home!

Sounds great, Bill. Nothing special planned here, but hoping to play and sing with friends this coming week. Spring break and I will finally get some quality time with my guitars. Yay!
