Hi all!!
I signed up last week with TNT in Maryland. I'll be doing the Iron Girl Triathlon in August. I just started working out in February with the goal of losing weight and getting in shape. I figured signing up for an event would keep me motivated. I already did one 5k three weeks ago. Look forward to chatting with you all here.

Welcome to the group. I can only comment on Nike as it was my first event with TNT. It was amazing! The crowd support was great and the course was good, although if you don't normally see hills during your runs, it can be a bit tough. Extra bonus -- the Tiffany necklace at the end.

I have another TNT friend that did Marine Corps and she said it also was a great marathon.

Best of luck in whatever you decide to pursue.

Hi. I'm Beth. I'm currently debating what event I will participate in this October. It will be my third TNT event. I'm considering Nike Women's or Marine Corps Marathon. I'm somewhat torn. Marine Corps is closer to home and requires a lower fundraising goal, but it's the one that scares me for whatever reason. Decisions, decisions.

Anyway, I was so excited to see this group. It's great to be in contact with other TNTers around the country. I'll look forward to getting to know you all and picking the collective brain when I need help. emoticon

Hi, I live in Jacksonville Fl, and i have been running on an off for about 4 years now. I never was a runner when I was younger but now I find I really enjoy it. I have done a few races and the last one was February 17th 1/2 marathon. I try to fit in as much running as i can in my schedule. wish everyone luck in their running goals.

Hello there!
I have been running for 5+ years since my 2nd daughter was born. Ran a few races, but have stepped into a different realm in joining VTNT. A girlfriend and myself are doing it together. We will be running the San Diego R&R Half Marathon in June like many of you in this thread. We are very excited!! I ran the marathon at PF Chang R&R in Phoenix in 2006. Great experience, but I find I like the 13.1 mileage the best, at least right now. Also cross-training by doing lite weights and spin classes.
Thanks and good luck to all in their training.
Go Team!!!

Hi all!!

My name is Michelle and I signed up this week with TNT in NYC. I'll be running the Rock N Roll race also in June. Look forward to chatting with you all here.

Daphne: You'll love San Diego. The west coast is so beautiful, much different than the midwest (I'm from Ohio). Everything is so natural and fresh. The Rock N Roll was a blast. The finish is at the Navy base and there were soldiers at the finish rooting us in.

I'm doing San Diego this year but did Alaska last year. The course is absolutely beautiful!! If you go, I would strongly suggest setting aside one day and doing a glacier tour -- really neat!

I think I'm going to San Diego but if we have participants who choose Alaska I have been asked if I would be willing to go there instead. It was a hard decision - San Diego was beautiful but a lot of people have said Alaska is too.

Hey everyone I did my first half marathon in June 07 with team in training and now I just got picked to be a mentor for the same race! Very excited... I just love the team in training. I have never felt anything like I did that day I crossed the finish line and they put the medal around my neck! I was choked up the whole last .25 miles of that race!

Its a great experience and I believe everyone should do it!

Laresamac: I'm taking you up on your offer for more info. I've been asked to speak at one of the kickoff meetings. The only format info/suggestion I received was "Fundraising." Got anything to get the wheels turning? I only have to speak for 3-5 minutes. Is this the right thread to post this to?

Thanks, Robin

Hey Everyone,

I just joined SparkPeople last week and I am loving it! I am a TNT alumni, ran the Marine Corp Marathon, in October and it was an incredible experience. I am continuing to be involved with the Team this season, probably as a nonfundraising mentor, but then hope to fundraise for an event in the fall! I was excited to see this group!

Welcome to the team! TNT is a great program and I definitely agree with you that training with others is so much easier. I understand your anxiety regarding your fundraising. Remember, you only need to have 25% raised by recommitment and you should still have some time to get to the minimum after that. Don't panic -- talk to your mentor, see if other teammates want to work with you on some fundraising events, follow up with the people you sent e-mails and letters to that haven't donated yet, and check out some of the previous posts on this team board for other ideas. Perhaps some of the other team members here can offer some suggestions?

Hi there. I've signed up to run the half-marathon in Santa Barbara this November. I think the training program with TNT is fantastic. I did a 3 day/50 mile walk with MS and I had a great time, but there was no one for me to train with. This experience on the other hand is phenominal (sp?). August was a challenge for me. I moved to a different city and what with the packing and the move itself, I only got to train twice. I'm planning on picking it up from here.

My fundraising isn't going that well either. I lost a whole month and now my recommitment date is upon me. I'm nervous. On a happier note, I think I'm close to my minimum at this point. I also have some family members who said that they are planning on sending me a check. I've stressed my deadline. I have ideas in motion, it's just that the only time I can find to do these things is after my recommitment date. Yikes!

Taking one day at a time. Sometimes 10 minutes at a time.

Hi All,

My brand spankin' new husband and I are running the PF Chang's Marathon in Phonenix in January.

Why am I running? We lost a dear family friend to AML last year. She was less than 50 years old and left behind aloving family. What was most striking about Lynette though was that even when she was terribly ill, she sought to be an inspiration and a source of hope to others. She continues to be to this day! If she can, I can!

Also, I want to lose that last 10 pounds I didn't quite get off before the wedding and I want to do something fun with my man.

I can't wait to hear your stories and for us to cheer each other on!

Kate

P.S. I too, live in Pas...

Hey everyone my name is Adam. I am new to the team and new to Team in Training. I've been thinking about doing a Team in Training event for a while. Like many I was drawn in by the allure of traveling to races with some great support. I got an extra push to join as over the past year cancer has struck close to home twice. First through my grandmother who was treated successfully and then again more recently when my best friend's father died from cancer.

So, here I am signed up for Disney in January and ready to do some fundraising.

Hello everyone!

I'm just about to run my 4th marathon with Team In Training (sixth marathon total). It will be the Anchorage Alaska marathon. I am so excited! We fly out on June 21st, and run on the 23rd.
I have also just started my fifth season with the team. I am training for the Nike Womens Marathon (again) If anyone has any TNT related questions, shoot me off an e-mail. I'm more than happy to give fundraising advice. I've fundraised for every single season I've participated.

On the nutrition front, I try to keep to a mix of 50-60% carbs, 25-30% protein and the balance as fat. Carbs are essential when you are running as it is your main source of fuel. Protein is important too as you start to run longer distances. Your muscles will need to repair and protein is essential for this. Try to stick to whole, unprocessed foods -- fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. There is a book called "Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook" which was one of the first books I read when I started running -- it's a great resource and I still refer back to it.

You will discover what works for you and what doesn't. It's a good idea to keep a log book so you can see what you ate and how well you ran. It will often help pinpoint problem foods and make you a better runner.

By the way, 19 weeks is a good length of time to get ready for a marathon -- even for a newbie!! Stick to your training schedule and you'll be fine. You might want to consider a run/walk -- I do 9 minutes running and 1 minute walking briskly. I find I can manage the distance with this format.

I just signed up for the Joint in Motion training team for the Arthritis Foundation. We'll be running the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on October 7th. I'm not a runner and am a little scared. I did do one 5K last year. My goal was to complete it and I did. I didn't want to have to walk. I didn't exactly train for that and hadn't been running much at all, so I'm really hoping being part of a team will help me train properly. I'd appreciate any advice as I am new to this. I have 19 weeks to get ready. It's going to be quite a challenge, but I'm up for it. What do I need to know about how to eat too. I feel like I'm clueless.

Welcome KTQT817! I did Nike as my first ever marathon (both running and with TNT) and it was a fantastic race. If you live in SF then you've probably seen the highlights of the course already but there's something different about running by them. The day I did the race, the Golden Gate was enveloped in fog and you could only see the top popping out - really cool! Don't worry about the training and fundraising. I'm a mentor with TNT and the mentors & coaches are there to help, encourage and make sure you are successful. Listen to them and you'll be fine. Best of luck and keep everyone here posted on your progress.

Hi! I just signed up with TnT last night and am starting to train for the Nike Women's Marathon in October. I consider myself a runner and have done shorter races(2 5ks, 3 10ks) but this is so exciting. I will be starting my training in San Francisco, moving to Ohio for 3 months (school) and then will be back in SF for the last month to conquer these hills. I am nervous because the training and the fundraising seem very daunting to me, but I know I can do it with all the support offered to me.

I am so excited!!!

I have been training with TnT since January and have loved every minute of it (even when my knees wanted to give up after the 20 mile run!) My first marathon is on June 3rd...Rock 'N Roll in San Diego! Less than 2 weeks! Yikes! I'm so excited and can't wait to return to the team for the fall season and hopefully be a mentor. Welcome to the team (both TNT and this spark team)!! I think you'll really enjoy the experience. Hopefully this spark team can give you some fundraising ideas. I've put a few out there already -- I think it's best to start a new message for each fundraising idea so that the good ones don't get lost and are easy to find. The easiest ones to start with, as you've probably already been told, is the letter writing campaign and an e-mail blast. Take advantage of the free postage offered by TNT!! Also, make sure to include a signature line in your e-mails directing people to your fundraising website so they can just click and donate. The easier you make it for your donors, the more they are likely to give.

I'm Sara, and I'm part of Team in Training in Memphis. I just joined up last week, and our first group training is scheduled for next Saturday. I'm going to be running the full at the PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Phoenix in January. It will be my first endurance event, so I have some SERIOUS training to do!

I'm already worrying about the fundraising, so any tips from the seasoned TNTers would be welcomed!

So far I really like it. We started on Saturday (but it wasn't much training as it was the first day). They basically went through how we meet up in the park, then the broke us up into groups and we went off with our coaches. Coach instructed us as to strectching and then we did a lap around the lower loop. After that we met back up and streched with the group again and then had a picnic in Sheep's Meadow. It was fun, but I suppose now the real work begins. Tonight is the next training at 6:40 pm.(it's Tues. eves and Sat. morns.) Tonight they meet at Bethesda Terrace (above fountain, across street), they are still signing people up. If you come tonight you should come earlier, 6:25 or 6:30 and at that spot you can drop your bag with the bag watchers and then they should be able to direct you to where you could meet with a group. If you're interested, I could get you in touch with somebody to speak with before hand.

All the marathon groups train together, you get split up by experience. It's fun!!!

Hi everybody!

This is my first time with Team in Training but I think I'm going to really love it. I'm training in NYC for the Nike Women's Full Marathon in San Francisco. As I'm a bit (hahaha) out of shape and have an problematic knee from a rollerblading "incident" I will be walking this marathon. Actually I've never been a runner but I'm curious to see if I start... probably not, but who knows, right?

Thanks for forming this team. Congrats to everyone here. It is a very important thing that we're doing.

Welcome. I hope this SparkTeam will help you along your TNT travels. I'm a mentor this year and it's a great experience being able to help others get as much out of the program as I did the first time. TNT needs great mentors and you sound like you've got the right stuff.

I'm an alumni this year. I ran my first Half Marathon with TNT in April at the Country Music Marathon. IT WAS GREAT!!!

I agree the min. amount of funds that needed to be raised discouraged me after I committed because it was hard. I end up having to donate a portion on my own, but still have until end of May for the reimbursement option...and I'm making it.

It's hard over all...the training, the fundraiser, just all of it.

OVERALL THE EXPERIENCE, THE SUPPORT, THE STRENGTH ... you get from everyone involved ... family, friends, strangers MAKE IT ALL WORTH IT!!!

When you actually get to the event...it's something that you WILL NEVER FORGET!!!! I can't see me not doing it again.

The Leukemia and Lymphona Society TNT Organization in the end, makes you realize why you put forth the effort that you did.

I hope you decide to join. I'm out of the Southern Nevada Chapter, and hope to run the Chicago Bank of LaSalle Marathon as a mentor, and next year make my way to coach.

Good luck in whatever you decide in completing your goal.

My time with TNT has been fantastic. This is my second season with them (the Nike Women's marathon last year and Anchorage this year) and I can't imagine training for a marathon any other way! The coaching is good and the social aspect makes those long runs bearable. Some people get worried about the fundraising aspect. But TNT provides lots of help through their mentors and staff. You just need to be committed personnally to make it happen.

Hi. I am scheduled to run the ING marathon (NYC) in November. I had to drop out last year b/c of knee injury. I am trying to decide if TNT is a good fit for me. I like the idea of the planned training and the companionship/coaching.

What was your experience with TNT?
