it is ALL about moderation.
If you drink on occasion, its fine.
But every day is going to add on a few extra calories. if you drink every day, than work out for an hour longer to compensate!
that way, you stay on track and you don't have to worry about counteracting your day.

I drink all the time...I don't want to give up a part of my lifestyle just to lose weight. There are plenty of people who are in really good shape but still drink a lot on weekends. I'm from Wisconsin where beer is the staple, so we tend to focus on trying to generally eat well and keep up the fitness level so that the loads of beer we drink Thurs-Sat doesn't affect us as much. I tend to trade in my 'dessert calories' for beer and aim to never get hungover. I can get pretty drunk once in awhile and avoid a hangover by drinking plenty of water before, during & after a night out (and getting electrolytes through coconut water or Gatorade). Most of the time people gain weight from drunk eating (which is my major problem) so I have been working on not getting so drunk that I feel like I have to eat something to "soak up" the alcohol. If I notice I party too hard for awhile or ate a bunch when I shouldn't have, I just spend a week eating really well, a lot less carbs, and a whole lot of veggies ^^

I think its great that you' ve had none in a month. Now when the holidays are over, I'll try not to drink any liquer either (till next holiday or birthday) too much empty carbs plus its slows down the metabolism, I've been working so hard to increase:) PS The 10 bottles will only get better with the time, don't feel bad about not drinking them

It is very rare for me to drink! I haven't had one in months. Its sad because we have about 10 bottles at home that my mom and I bought on our wine tour a couple months ago.

Its probably depends weather its dry or sweet, dry is less calories, but red wine contains more antioxidants than white

I try to limit my drinks to weekends only, and will usually have vodka with diet tonic. Diet tonic is zero cals.

I don't drink much but unfortunately for me (and it sounds like you too) I drink hard liquor with juice i.e. Mailbu Bay Breeze, Flavored Vodka and soda/juice, etc. etc. Alcohol is a big calorie waster. I finally got myself off of soda and juice even and only drink unsweetened iced tea and water...and coffee which is my weakness. I say try to cut out alcohol all together. It leads to a much healthier lifestyle. Go workout instead ;)

I have a couple of drinks a week. I agree with SUBOLA87, it doesn't take much for me to feel dehydrated and groggy the next day. I used to drink more regularly, but my tolerance has changed now. That's fine by me - I'm saving plenty of money and taking better care of my liver, as well as learning to enjoy other options when I'm out.

Husband and I tried to give up drinking to help get fit again. It doesn't work for hubby, he's an alcoholic so we came up with a work around:

He gets one beer for every mile he runs. We've allowed a holdover system: If you run two miles but can't drink due to work or homework (like me!) ONE beer carries over for tomorrow. He doesn't usually save his, but I'd rather he run 5 miles and get a little sloshed before bed than NOT run 5 miles and drink them anyway :P

Not a perfect fix, but we're getting better. I don't drink more than two a night when I do drink. I'm a one beer, or one sipper of port, kind of girl.
Now, if it was a mile per bowl of ice cream... I'd have issues...

Also, I'm curious to know: did anyone give up alcohol to lose weight and then try to drink again? I only recently allowed myself to drink again and my body seems to be disagreeing with the alcohol most times. I used to have such a high tolerance and now I feel hung over after one or two drinks.

I used to be a BIG drinker, but when I started trying to lose weight last October that was the first thing that I gave up. I hate it because my boyfriend and I recently had went to the New York wine trails and had 20-30 bottles of wine. Now they are just sitting around our apartment tempting me. My friends also go out to bars just about every weekend - just another temptation.

Like other people have said, I enjoy alcohol in moderation (extreme moderation) and try to take what I'll be drinking into account when eating and working out for that day. Hitting the gym up for an hour or so before going out for a few gin and tonics makes me feel a little better about it. emoticon emoticon

Prior to SP I drank beer. That changed once I realized that just drinking one or two can throw off a days calories! I was never and am still not a big drinker, but there would be a few days a month that I would have 4-6 beers....that's an enormous amount of empty calories (even if it's "light" it's still 100 cals/drink). I swapped beer for wine and I find that since I don't enjoy wine as much I drink less when I do choose to drink and have less of a desire overall to drink alcohol... it's pretty much a win-win situation. If you are a heavier drinker it really can ruin weight loss efforts. Yes, occassionally it's okay to "account" for the extra calories you know you will be drinking, but it's just not healthy to only eat 500 calories of food on Saturday because you know you are going to drink 800 calories of beer that night (just as an example). The key for me has been moderation.... good luck to everyone! emoticon

I am a social drinker. But even when I go out, I share a drink with my boyfriend. I have a habit of drinking too fast (with certain drinks like margaritas) so it helps to share. I also eat an apple and drink water before going out, the fiber from the apple helps.

Hi guys! I do drink alcohol a lot, which I believe is making it more difficult for me to lose weight. It's hard because at my age (20) most of my friends especially at school go out 2 or 3 times a week, and I want to do so as well!

Yep - my hubby and I are home brewers, so there's usually beer in the house. We also like to get mixed six packs of interesting brews at a great bottle shop near our neighborhood and split one with dinner once in awhile. I also love red wine! Mixed drinks are a rarity, but sometimes I'll make one on the weekend. However, while I used to have a drink almost every night, I now only have about two a week.

I love love love wine or a good mixed drink. I live alone while my fiance is deployed, so I usually have a drink or two every day with dinner. This is especially true when I ate calorie rich foods that a good wine complements. A lot of my friends are wine connoisseurs too. But, alcohol is a ton of calories so I am going to seriously cut my alcohol intake. I'm going to start with once a week only if I am eating at a nice restaurant or at a friend's house. I will not purchase any wine for myself unless I am planning to have guests over. I think this is will make drinking a little more special too, when I only get to have it on special occasions. I won't completely deprive myself either, so that will make the transition easier. I'm hoping the calories I cut because of this will show!

Today is my first day, and already I know drinking is my biggest weight loss obstacle.
I drink...light beer or wine. 5-6 drinks Saturday nights..3-4 Sunday nights. I usually drink 2 (sometimes 3) days during the week, usually 1-3 drinks with dinner. I have like 15 drinks a week!
I'm already thinking about how I can cut calories out of dinner to incorporate 5 beers tonight.

I have always been a bit of a drinker. Wine, beer, vodka whatever. My husband constantly drinks beer but is ridiculously fit because of his crazy labor intensive job (ironworker) where as I join him and then only am active at the gym, what about the other hours of the week? Yeah something had to give so I cut beer out completely 3 months ago and lost a lot of bloat within 2 weeks. Now I am including wine in my calorie counts and that is helping too. I wont abstain completely but definitely cut back!

Coming from a family that welcomes social drinking, this has always been a struggle. I used to drink 1-2 drinks (wine or beer usually) every night but that's how I got to where I am now. Currently I'm trying to cut it down to one night during the week and 2 nights on the weekend. My boyfriend is also a Wino and that hasn't made anything easier.

Once I stopped drinking for a week to hydrate for a 10k race. In that one week I lost something around 5lbs, so I know it's a huge factor in my diet.

Cutting down has really helped.

This a tough decision. My husband owns a restaurant that's known for it's wine list, so our lives include a LOT of wine. When I met him, I put on about 15 pounds in 6 months. I blamed the wine. I've tried to cut down and have been doing okay but it's SO hard. I find that I have to stay away from the restaurant altogether which sucks for my social life but is good for my waistline. I wish there was some sort of low/no cal version!! I miss my cabernet!

I usually drink a glass of red wine when I go out (maybe 1-2/week). I made the mistake of drinking too much at a friends birthday party the other night and almost made a huge mistake, though. Someone brought eclairs and I put one in my mouth but caught myself before I bit down on any of it (thankfully!) and thought "this is full of gluten AND fat, what am I doing?". I definitely think when you drink a lot your rational mind goes out the window and you eat junk. Luckily (maybe not that lucky) gluten has such a bad effect on my body that I realized before I ingested it.
I suggest if you are going to drink that you eat something healthy before hand or bring healthy snacks in your purse.

I have a margarita now and again (just one, and I enjoy it sooo much!) but that's it. I don't let myself get into a habit of it, or do it more than once every 2 weeks or so. I actually crave it (I don't know if it's the lime in it or salt or what...) so I struggle with wanting one, especially on my period. But I deal *shrug* makes it better when I do get to have one. I drink one and don't feel guilty.

If you're going to drink I hear it's best to drink clear vodkas and rums that don't already have mixers in them. And have them on the rocks or as a shot and do not mix them with anything...except maybe rum and diet coke.

I used to drink all of the time. I gained almost 20 lbs over my first two years in college from drinking and eating poorly. When I met my boyfriend 2.5 years ago I has just turned 21 (he was 26 at the time) so we ALWAYS went out to the bar. Too many drinks means too much crappy food late at night. Since I have gotten my exercise and food under control (and lost a lot of weight), I find that I hardly drink anymore. I used to have a few glasses of wine at night, but I had two glasses with dinner a few weeks ago and just didn't enjoy it... and didn't feel well the next day... from two glasses! My desire to drink has definitely gone away, finally! I find it more enjoyable now to get up early and go for a run, rather than stay up late and drink all night like I used to.

I drink a few beers or have a glass or two of wine every night to help "unwind" as I call it. This is definitely the biggest problem I have with weight gain. I gained 10 pounds my first year of law school and I know it was all from drinking at night. I just started Jillian Michael's 30 day shred program and I'm going to cut back the drinking to maybe just 3 nights a week and low calorie drinks.

I drank probably 5 nights/week during my first year of law school, and I definitely gained weight way too easily because of it. During my 2nd and 3rd year I cut down to maybe 3 nights/week but still struggled with losing weight. After law school and post-bar exam festivities, I gave up alcohol for 6 months and lost about 5lbs. 1.5 years later, I rarely drink anymore. When I do drink it reminds me of how crappy and messed up my life had gotten during law school and how many poor decisions I made. And I hate feeling sick in the morning. When I do drink now it is usually twice/month and maybe only 1 or 2 beers. I don't really have a tolerance for it anymore either. I feel so much healthier too.

I think this is the hardest part of the whole thing--but it's gotten much easier! Honestly I just started cutting back a little on the girls nights and the crazy partying. I gained over 25lbs in college and I can pretty certainly say that it was entirely from drinking. I never drank in high school and had zero problem with weight.

That being said, I do enjoy a glass of wine (or two) now and then and my dad brews beer, so I'm constantly a "taste tester" for him. In my opinion I'd rather have one stronger beer for 200 cals and actually feel like I've had a drink than 5 light beers. You save calories in the long run if you limit yourself to one but still have fun when you get a little bit of a buzz :)

If I go out with my friends, I stick to lemon drops (a shot of vodka with a lemon slice and a pinch of sugar). As far as munchies go, I find that it is best to be prepared. When I went out this past weekend, my sister and I packed ourselves sparkling water, special K crackers, and pretzel slims, so we wouldn't be tempted to go to Wawa and buy a bunch of junk food.

YES!!! I am a very social person and enjoy having drinks with my friends. However, I limit myself to only have a drink or two on the weekends. That way, I can still have a fun time (without feeling left out) AND meet my own goals! emoticon

Working at a bar doesn't help much when at the end of the night, dealing with the rest of the drunks, all you want to do is unwind and have a beer. But after gaining 12 lbs in 8 months, it's just not worth it. No more jager or tuaca bombs. I am getting serious!

I drink pretty much once a week and try to stick to budselect, or vodka. They just made a new budselect 55 which is the lowest calorie beer in the world. If your trying to get drunk then this is not the beer for you as I drunk 8 of them and just quit because all I was getting was heart burn lol. But it is good to drink if your just doing it to participate in the social drink scene ect. Or just to have the taste of it and relax and unwind. Alcohol like most others have said usually make you gain due to the food you choose while intoxicated or hungover. As long as your not drinking sugary drinks such as cocktails, margarita's and such then you will be fine on that note just don't go to McDonalds and Taco Bell when your done lol!

Also if you want to ensure you don't have a hang over in the morning, take 2 advil liquid gels, eat 5 crackers or a slice of bread and drink at least 3 cups of water before you go to sleep. Have a bottle of water to sip on in the middle of the night as well. Oh yeah and one of my secrets to not gaining while drinking is to go out dancing while drinking then come home and have some extra credit exercise with your man! emoticon

I recently found out that I have a systemic candida overgrowth and as a result, was told that I had to cut out all beer, yeast and candida-feeding foods (certain carbs, etc).

Since I refuse to consume artificial sweeteners (they may be good for weight loss, but not for health!) I spoke to my homeopath about a friends birthday that was coming up. I wanted to partake in the festivities but wanted a better alternative... She suggested vodka, club soda and lime. It took a little getting used to but after 1 or 2, who knew?? :)

Oh and a nice side effect? I lost 5lbs in under 2 weeks.

I definitely notice that when I drink alcohol, I maintain; when I don't, I lose weight relatively quickly. This is a lesson that I must constantly relearn - alcohol is a really big social temptation for me. And I love the taste of beer and cider. *sigh*

The only way for me to lose weight, is to cut the booze!

Need a boost? I'm a diet cheerperson! No training, but plenty o' spirit! :D

I do and I wish I would cut back. I'm still in college so my friends are binge drinking every other day, but I stick to once a week. I'm trying to only do it every two weeks on Fri or Saturday. It's haaaaaaarrrddd! emoticon

I try to keep it to only once every 2-3 weeks. Usually just consider it a cheat day.

Think it and it will be so.

i agree with a lot of the other posters here, its not so much the calories in the wine/beer, but the reduced impulse control which makes digging in to the spinach dip, ings, etc seem like it's ok! also, while i am focused on losing weight and my calories are so low, "spending" 200 cals on 2 drinks is a bigger percentage of my overall food and hard to get all the nutrition in 1000 cals a day

I turned 21 last June and since then had been drinking pretty regularly (at least once a week). Now it's more like once or twice a month, and usually just a glass of white wine. It's kind of nice, and I don't have to think about all those empty calories!

my new goal is to not drink at home during the week (ie. no "nightcap" of wine at the end of the day), and try to limit myself to 1 drink when i'm out.

this is the first time in years i've had a social life (i used to be a full-time athlete), so i'm trying to enjoy myself but stay within reasonable limits.

a few drinks a week is OK, i think. and maybe one night/day where i got a little wild is OK. as long as it is infrequent. and i keep up my workout schedule ;)

I just turned 21 this past july, so yes, i drink too. i try to steer clear of beer for the most part except for really light ones like MGD64 and Coors Light and I have to really be in the mood for it. I'm a big fan of red wine, which is good for your heart but can trigger instant cravings if I'm not super careful with it.

moderation with drinking is definately key so i dont think a little bit does much damage.

I definitely drink alcohol. Going out and having drinks is typically my friends and mine excuse for getting together. I would love to start to change that a bit more but the problem is that most of my friends are guys and that I love watching sports. My boyfriend and I have tried to drink a lot less at home but that is about it.

One think that has made a large difference with me and my weight despite still drinking is that I now make sure I have a good meal in my stomach before I start and that I don't allow myself to eat when I get home (or try not too). If I am too hungry to not eat I will limit myself to things like lean cuisine pizza or sweet cereal, etc depending on what I am craving. I am determined to reduce this happening over time... emoticon

I drank most weekends this summer, at least three weekends a month. Now that it's fall and we're not on the boat every weekend, I've really cut back. I think I have some drinks about once every 2 months or so. I've lost some weight, but that's also been from exercising more and watching my intake a bit better.

Alcohol does add the calories though with 7 cals/gram, it's almost as much as fat!

Hey Guys,

I think like all of us who have posted in this forum realized quickly that in college we drink. Its pretty inevitable, and the kegs are always in abundance and making the switch to hard alcohol in attempts to cut back on calories can get pretty messy. I think the best advice is to just have that one night a week or every two weeks, where you throw back at the frat. And when out at dinner, alternate from alcohol to water, it will prevent the midnight grease munchies, keep you hydrated and help the metabolism. Otherwise its the sad but honest truth that the alcohol is probably at the core of a lot of our weight loss issues.

Hi! I am also new here and I have the same questions regarding drinking... I have decided to see if cutting back on my consumption of beer and cocktails would help. So far, I am on day 3 and yesterday at dinner with a friend, she had ordered a beer for me before I already got there... but it was Light and instead of having another or two, i switched to water. I guess a few glasses of wine and stuff in moderation shouldn't be as bad as the crazy binge drinking that lead to hangovers that usually lead me to double quarter pounders with cheese...

Unfortunately drinking, for many, is a part of staying social. As a college student I too have had my experiences with the "freshman 15". Over the last 2 years I have worked my butt off to lose it and here are a few things I do differently now as opposed to what I did 2 years ago.

1. I only drink on the weekends and I try to pick just one night to drink.
2. I cut out beer. Not only is it calorie packed but it takes a lot to get a buzz.
3. Mix a shot of alcohol with a 0 calorie drink (my favorites: Sprite 0, diet coke)
4. Drink lots of water before you go to bed or hit the fridge. This usually fills my stomach so I don't feel the urge to splurge.
5. Take a Vitamin B complex with the water. Not only does this help with hangovers but it acts as a metabolizer.

I hope this helps!!!

Hello All ~
I am also new to Spark and have been struggling with the drinking vs. weight-loss issue. I live in Korea and almost all social activity revolves around some form of drinking (at dinner, at the bar, at karaoke, etc.) and it is very rude to decline a drink offered by someone older, or more respected, than you. This means if my boss pours me a drink ... I must drink it. In order to avoid offending my boss and those who are older than me I was wondering which drinks have the least calories/carbs etc? If I must drink to be socially and culturally sensitive (it does sound odd to write but it is indeed the case) perhaps I can at least be drinking the best possible "health" option. Any suggestions?

I have alcohol once in a while. We don't keep it in the house really. I don't think it's that bad if you only have it on occasion, and then not much.

hey guys,
this used to be a dilemma for me too. when I was in second year university, I had already gained the freshman 15 and then some. I wanted to lose weight but drinking was just part of the atmosphere and I just decided that was one thing I wouldn't cut out. I hit my heaviest in third year, at 144lbs. In fourth year, I moved out of my house of 6 girls, and essentially stopped drinking, except maybe once every two weeks. Without even trying, I dropped to 130 in about a year. Sooo, I would try sticking to one or two drinks a week, it might be worth it!

Drinking seems to be my nemesis when it comes to losing weight. It is something I need to do less of because it is a lot of empty calories and when I drink I tend to snack and eat greasy foods.

I still drink more than I should but I drink less of the sugary, calorie-packed drinks. Now I stick with light beer, wine, and liquor and diet coke.

I have definitely cut beer out. It is loaded with calories and so I am usually the one that brings MGD 64 to the Tailgates or to watch football games. I have noticed that I feel better at the end of games. I am trying so hard to watch everything I eat.

When people ask me how I lost weight, my boyfriend cuts me off and says "She stopped drinking alcohol." Which is in part true. I have a drink on the rare occasion, which tends to make the the DD on the weekends. But calories in drinks add up, and alcohol is metabolized differently than food (http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutri
tion_articles.asp?id=563). All in moderation and try to refrain from snacking- that always gets me when I do drink!

I try to only have a couple of drinks otherwise it leads to snacking as well. I don't know if it has an effect on your metabolism but it definitely adds up quickly in calories...

If I save enough calories I'll have a glass of wine in the evening. If I wanted to go "out drinking" with friends or whatever, I'd skip dinner to save calories, but turns out that is BAD NEWS. After a little alcohol poisoning I don't think I'll try that again. I've heard rumors it slows your metabolism, but I don't really know.

I do drink alcohol, mostly red wine one or two nights a week. I can't comment on the nutritional/biological effect of alcohol on metabolism, but I can say that the behaviors associated with drinking can often be as much if not more of an issue as the calories within the drinks themselves. For instance, if you went out for an evening of drinking, it's more likely you'll eat something snacky late at night or crave something greasy in the morning! (at least for me!) That's one reason I've cut down a bit on even just casual drinking with a meal, as it always loosens up those inhibitions!

First off I'm new to spark! My mind is racing with questions but one that I have yet to come across is about alcohol. Do any of you drink and how much? I hear it slows down your metabolism, but if you're eating healthy will you lose, gain, or maintain the weight you are? I understand juice has a lot of sugar so I usually use crystal lights instead and order vodka water barlimes when I go out..

thanks!
