This is a great question. I've now been working on weight loss for almost 5 years. I've taken maintenance breaks and gone up and down here and there, but I've generally maintained a downward trend, or at least a maintenance trend. My motivation has changed over the years, which I think is good.
1) My wake up call came when I was shopping for a bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding and none of the dresses fit. Initially, my motivation was based mostly on my negative body image. (Turns out, getting comfortable wearing a bikini regardless of my weight was probably one of the best things I did for my body image. This was a key part of my motivation changing.)
3) My motivation changed about the time I started using SparkPeople. I also started running. I was inspired by the idea of starting small. I also bought motion control running shoes, which honestly changed my life by allowing me to run without pain. I went from not running at all to a 10K trail run! I was hooked. Next, I did an 8 mile run, then a half marathon! I was motivated by meeting increasingly difficult goals and I was extremely proud of myself. I lost about 15 lbs during this time.
4) Since starting law school, my weight has gone up and down some, but I have maintained my fitness level. I ran another half marathon and I do more strength training. I am also considering training for a triathlon. I've learned to enjoy the stress relief and "me time" that I get from exercising--so that's a big motivator.
5) My sister and brother in law began losing weight and running. They said that I inspired them. That was a huge honor and is motivating for me because I don't want to let them down. I love the fact that I can help inspire my family to be healthy.
6) My latest motivation is my wedding! I feel like this is the catalyst I need to finish the job and finally get down to the weight I should be. I want to be as healthy, strong, fit, and confident as I can as I head into my marriage and a new stage in my life.
