OMG I used to do this too. It had nothing to do with any eating disorder for me, I just woke up and couldnt go back to sleep if I felt even the slightest bit hungry. I think you should consider why you are waking up. Maybe thats what you need to talk to your doctor about. Try keeping some kind of nuts on hand, eating a few nuts might just take the edge off until you doze back off or have 1 cracker. I know its hard to sleep with hunger pangs but it sounds more like a sleep disorder to me. Good luck.

Well, first off, why are you waking up in the middle of the night? You need a solid night's sleep! If changing a few things doesn't help, see you doctor about it.

Maybe your body is craving water and you just think your hungry, which is why you eat.

Are you stressed out? Maybe that's why you're reaching for the junk food. Buy some herbal (decaf) tea and try drinking that instead of eating.

Make sure you're getting enough sleep!

Also I have heard that people who are on sleeping pills get up and eat in the middle of the night, I am not sure if you might be on any, but just another thought

Just a thought: Are you fully aware of your behavior at the time? My mother used to sleepwalk and eat, and it posed a constant battle with her weight, obviously. But also she sometimes would do potentially dangerous things, like try to eat nonfood items. If you feel like you're not quite in control as in it might be sleepwalking behavior, I would see a doctor right away. Please take care of yourself!

I agree that it could be a sign of an eating disorder. I know it sounds drastic but as a former bulimic I suggest locking up the goodies in a cabinet with a lock. It may be the only way to stop this behavior.

Off the top of my head: Try having a glass of water and going back to bed?

More seriously: I think an accurate answer depends on why you're doing it. Are you hungry and just snacking on the junk food, or trying to hide your actions?

I'm phrasing this poorly.

Honestly, the thought that comes to mind is that you may want to talk to a counselor regarding a possible eating disorder. In my own recovery from anorexia I've done a fair bit of research about eating disorders (the fact that my daughter just turned 14 has something to do with it too :) ). I seem to recall eating in the middle of the night, especially if you're trying to hide it, as a red flag for one of the bulimia variants.

At the very least, please do some web research about eating disorder symptoms. I hope I'm way, way off base!
