So, yesterday I was a bit flustered because of the weight gain, but today, I am dealing with allergies and that isn't any fun. I am so stuffy. The bright side is, when I am walking my nose clears up, lol, I know you didn't need to know that. To bad I have to work or I would walk all day, lol!!! Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Thanks,

HAT_WRIGHT Good for you planning all of that canning. I am interested in how you do spaghetti sauce. Have you been successful before? Do you need a pressure canner?

I was thinking about canning some fruit but found out that to do it safely it has to by in at least a light syrup if you don't have a pressure canner plus it is a lot of heavy hot work and expensive compared to canned fruit here in Alberta.

emoticon

But I congratulate anyone who does. We canned pears, pickles, pickled beats, and relishes growing up and I miss a pantry full of homegrown goodness.

JAMBABY- Great job. You are a great inspiration - once again.

I highly recommend visiting JAMBABY's Spark Page.

Just had to share this. I went to Wal-mart and they had some clothes on clearance and well I love clothes (yes I am a clothes hoarder I know). Well they had these 2 skirts on the rack but they were a size small (3-5) and I was sooo sure they would NOT fit but I searched everywhere and could not find them in a medium sooo I decided to completely destroy my self esteem and try them on...Well I left the store with.....2 skirts!!!! They fit! I was so excited I almost cried thank you to this team and a thank you to sparkpeople!!!!

Remember, YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Needing a well do revamp on my exercise program and weight loss. I can't believe after all the hard work I gained 5 pounds. emoticon I had lost them in one week emoticon and in two weeks I gained them all back. So I guess a revamp is due. Any ideas? I walk 2-3 miles a day, emoticon random strength training exercises, emoticon eat within my calorie range. I just don't know what else to do. emoticon

Liz, someone once told me it takes three weeks to start or end a habit. Get into the habit of working out and push yourself for the first few weeks. Force yourself to go even when you don't want to, and about the fourth week, it's a natural part of your day. :)

Hi Gang!!!

So excited, after gaining and losing the same pounds for 8 weeks, I saw a new number today!!! Even though it was only half a pound, it shows me that I am heading in the right direction. It also shows that I am a person who needs to hand write my food journals as well as, track on here. For whatever reason, it just works for me. Good thing school supplies are cheap right now, because I go through A LOT of notebooks=)

Jen--thanks for the info, it's always great to get another perspective, I will be checking out the blog, later today. In the battle of losing weight, knowledge is power, and I want all the power I can get=) I have also heard about the BPA thing, I went through my cupboards and made sure everything I have is BPA free, if not I threw it out. I also only store my food in BPA free, or glass containers, and we bottle our own water. Each person has a nifty Polar Bottle, bonus they never get mixed up, won't go in our landfills, and the water stays colder longer, thanks to the insulation, and they are 24 ounces.

We also try to limit our canned items as well, sometimes this can be tough in the winter, so this year I will be ding a lot of canning of fesh item, and making my own pasta sauce, salsa, apple sauce, and jams. plus there are some veggies you can store in the freezer, so I will be doing that too. Summer fresh in the winter, yes please!!!

Have a great day all!

Goal 1000 fitness minutes/month!

I may not be to the finish line yet--but at least I am in the race!

Help!! i cannot count how many times Ive started and stopped trying to drop this weight!! I am soo tired of being tired. I went to the doctor and had some good news though. Everything is good with me just the extra weight. Went camping in June and did a 2 mile rugged hike. thought i was going to die when it came to the stairs! I love hiking and canoeing and so many other things but I cant do them. So why cant i stick to changing my life? It is sooo frustrating sometimes. I know I just needs to get off the couch when i get home and do something. so tired though! I start work at 7 am so mornings are out. I was going to the YMCA and my kids loved it but started slacking and quit. Any suggestions???

Hi I'm Jen. I was part of the Spring into Summer Challenge which is now over so I'm stopping in here until the next challenge.

STEPH - Recently I had the privilege of attending an Education Day at the Endocrinology Clinic that is supervising my weight loss. More like fixing me so I can lose weight but that's another story. They brought in a weight loss expert who is an endocrinologist and has/is doing studies in Europe. She talked a bit about plateaus and she is convinced that they happen because your BMR decreases as you lose weight. So for example if in January you were 20lbs heavier, it would be like carrying around a 20lb weight all day now, which would burn more calories everyday. But...you are not carrying around that 20lb weight so you no longer need the energy (calories) to do it. Dr. Sue suggested that diet plans need to be re-evaluated every 20 lbs. But from what you said a few days ago, you are in a healthy caloric range and are burning many calories exercising. I just wanted to share Dr. Sue's advice because it does make sense in theory.

Another area Dr. Sue has been involved in studying is BPA and obesity. There is some preliminary evidence that it is linked to obesity. BUT..OBVIOUSLY not everyone who eats canned goods is overweight, so there is more to investigate. I think the evidence is suggesting that the BPA is mimicking hormones that tell our body that there is a famine and to conserve energy. I think she said it stays in obese people longer then the thin folks, and is stored in our fat making it harder to be used for energy. But don't quote me on any of this I didn't take notes so I am relying on what I remember, but cutting it out may be another tool that helps you.

Dr. Sue has a blog that I enjoy reading it is Drsue.ca. Recently under research she posted some eye opening findings about eating a large (700 cal) breakfast. Check it out.

Since she is in Canada and we have government funded health care I don't feel like I'm promoting something for sale. I fell in love with her at our education day because it felt like she really gets some of the struggles of losing and maintaining weight loss. If posting a link to her blog offends anyone I am sorry.

Sleep problems and stress (because of cortisol) both make weight loss more difficult so if you've changed jobs or medications that could partly be the culprit to a very long plateau. Not drinking enough water could also be giving you problems.

#1 thing to be thankful and proud of yourself for - that you have continued with the habits you worked hard to establish and as a result have not regained the weight you lost.

Speaking of sleep issues it is 2am here. I need to get to bed.

I look forward to getting to know you all better in the next few weeks.

Jen

Jgloor and Stuckeyy, making exercise a habit is the first step. Sometimes just using a walking video is a great help and you walk further in less time, just because it seems to be easier. leslie Samsone (sp?) has some great walk away the pounds videos that are really easy. For me, right now, there is a track about a mile away that I drive to and do laps at least five nights a week. Now it's gotten to the point where if I don't go, I feel guilty. As Mary Poppins once said, "well begun is half done."

Determined and diligent is my new motto

Steph, after a couple of days of drinking extra water, the need to pee will definitely slow down. You will feel soooo much better. I have to admit though, as I made it to my first set of mini goals the other day, I was able to cut out two glasses of water a day!!!!!

That makes sense. Thanks. There is a track across the street from my school. I could go there and let the stress from my day fall off as I walk a couple of laps, however the weather is a deterrant for me. I don't like the heat nor do I like the cold. So I would probably go regularly in the spring! LOL! I just have to overcome those excuses and be committed I guess. Thanks for the idea to just go straight to it and not go home, because I am just like you once I get there I don't want to leave.

So I have a hard time sticking to exercise. I am a school teacher and it is summer now so I am doing better, but when my life gets busy again, I feel like I am going to fall off the wagon. What suggestions do you guys have that have worked or are working for you so that you fit exercise into your day? emoticon

You can also look into fruit infused water. You basically just add fresh fruit to your water. It gives it some flavor but it is not overpowering. You can find information about how to do it on the internet. Good luck! emoticon

Hey all

Hope youre doing well today. Yesterday was a good day - i decided i need to drink a LOT more water so i had 16 glasses of water which is a huge stretch since i think im lucky to do 6 a day normally! Its not so hard to do i just have to actually THINK about water because naturally i just dont drink even in high heat. Boy was i in the bathroom a lot though!

I also my second night in a row of a 45 minute deep water workout class and a 45 minute aqua size class. Boy i loving working out that way!

Still no weight/inches lost in the last few months but one day this has to change - its just impossible not to.

Hi Gang,

checking if from yesterday 51 minutes of exercise, and 152 oz of water!!!! yay!!! I met my goals. Today I am off to a great start as well, getting alot accomplished around the house, and have already had a healthy breakfast and been on an 18 minute walk. Heading back out in a bit, after I flip the laundry. It is cloudy right now, so I am going to try and get a lot in, since it will be 95D later today.

RelicJoe---I know they are ok in moderation, but you don't want them to be the only way you are getting in water. I too used them when I was trying to get in the habit of drinking more, and I carry a Mio in purse, so when I go out, I can just order the water, and flavor it myself, and I don't feel deprived=) Here is the ratio I used, one water/one flavored. Now I crave plain ice water, weird huh? Also don't forget about using fruits/veggies in your water. I love mint lemon and ginger combined, and also just an orange wedge. Good Luck!!!

SherryWilson--new jobs can be tough since you are trying your best to do the job well. I noticed that you throw the food out at night, could it be donated? Just thinking that if you knew you were doing something to help others, it might feel more rewarding=)

I started using those water flavorings in water. I was drinking way too much diet soda so this helps that problem a lot.

Only now I wonder what they put in those flavorings. I dont see artificial sweeteners that I know but I see propylene glycol, sucralose and acesulfame as sweetners.

They sound like artificial sweeners. Ae they dangeorus, does anyone know?

Hey Gang,
Doing my check in, I got my exercise in, but only 80 ounces of water, still better than I had been doing. It is amazing how easy it is to slip back into the bad habits.

For some reason I suggested we go to the bakery yesterday, big mistake.6 cookies, and 3 mini cupcakes later, uhhhh sugar high. I hadn't had one of those in over a year. I did journal all of it though, so that was good at least. Luckily the scale was kind to me this morning=) no gain.

Today however I a totally on track, 36 minutes of exercise, with 10 more to come since my daughter and I are going to walk to the pool. It's 6 blocks=) 82oz of water, and calories thus far are at 690. I think I might save up and have a chocolate mint dilly bar later=)
I know it wasn't one of my goals to count calories this week, but I a, trying to get better at tracking=)

Bonus--dinner will be boiling beef and cabbage, it's in the crockpot already, So after the pol when I am hot and exhausted I won't have to cook, and not break my diet=)

Goal 1000 fitness minutes/month!

I may not be to the finish line yet--but at least I am in the race!

Wow it looks like a different forum here. Glad to see people posting.

There was an article in ourt newspaper today that said "the police routinely log our license plates when we travel". I always said those cameras were there for some other reason than traffic. Its been going on for years. No one would believe me and now there is proof. bwaa ha haaa. I was right.

I am getting some needed exercise today by mowing the neighbor's grass and trimming his bushes.

And no, he is not a psychiatrist!

Back on the forum now that the Spring into Summer Challenge is over. I love the challenges, they are so much fun. I have kinda taken the last week or so off, I am now realigning my goals, to get back on track. One of the things I have learned is how hard it is for me to say, no thanks to the fun summer treats that comes with a family, and kids. The grill outs, ice cream, and smores.

So for this 1st week, today through the 24th, I am vowing to get in 30 minutes of exercise, adn 125 ounces of water. I will check in to let you know where I am at. If you want to go along with me, let me know=)

Hi everyone,

I have been so out of it lately and not motivated at all. I think my work life is slowly have an adverse effect of my health life. I am going to work out today for the first time in about 2-3 weeks; hopefully this will put me back in gear. My breakfast consisted of a Morningstar Veggie Breakfast pattie, a 100 calories sandwich round, coffee with 2 tablespoons of fat free Half and Half; my lunch will be 4.5 oz of bakes boneless, skinless chicken breast, a pita and 1 cup of green grapes. I am not too sure what I plan to do for dinner; that's when I feel the most vulnerable as fare as meal choices. Well here's to day one of hopefully getting back on the right track.

Have a great day everyone!

Maybe try incorporate that if at all possible, since it may help combat any loss of muscle that sometimes happens with quick weight loss and also combat the loose skin issue (enter scary music here). I don't know about you, but I want to do everything I can to avoid it! I already have some, but I'm doing everything I can to keep it to a minimum!

Don't feel bad! You're doing wonderful. But unfortunately yes your time will come :P sorry to be a downer. Its something we all face, but its a great accomplishment once you overcome it.

I was down about 30 pounds in 2.5 months. It does start to slow down once your body starts to get used to some of the changes. I think the bigger you are TYPICALLY the faster it comes off at the start. Enjoy the fruits of your labour and keep them in mind when things do start to slow down.

I wouldnt worry about losing too quickly as long as you're still eating enough to keep your body healthy and running properly (depends on the person but at least 1400 - 1500) and as long as you feel good. Things will even out and you will drop down to a more "normal" weight loss eventually. If you get really concerned of course talk to your doctor but i think as long as you're consuming what your body needs it will typically let you know if whats happening isnt good for you.

Cat,
I started making changes on June 5, and I've lost 30 pounds so far. The first twenty always goes quickly, but it usually slows down after that. 30 pounds in 40 days is just fast. I'm having trouble hitting the calories most days, so you would think that would slow me down, but I'm not hungry. I'm drinking twenty glasses of water a day. I get to go down to 18 cups of water in two more pounds, woo hoo. And I'm walking two miles most evenings.

Thanks Steph! Glad to be back :)

Sweetldyj:How fast is too fast? How many pounds are you averaging a week?

I finally am going back the right direction. The last two weeks I've lost 4.5 pounds. Makes me happy! Especially since I'm only working out half an hour a day. I feel pretty good about that!

Ok, I feel really bad for posting this, and I know my plateau time will come soon enough. I'm more worried right now that the weight loss hasn't slowed down at all yet. I've made major changes, and I mean major, but I expected it to start slowing down by now. I want it to stay off, and I'm afraid I'm losing it too fast to keep it off. Any suggestions? Or should I just let nature take it's course?

Determined and diligent is my new motto

Hey Fitandhappycat :)

I did change my exercise i try and get new videas from my library (yoga, cardio (kickboxing, etc), strength (kettlebells and free weights), sulpt etc. I enjoy mixing it up although ust recently i moved up to level 2 in the 30 day shred and ive been doing that each day to see how it goes.

Ive tried going over on calories occasionally and my weight immediately shoots back up - its quite discouraging. I know so many people who do that and its great for kick starting that nasty plateau, ive had little success though.

I shall keep plugging away an hoping to see results, i want to quit some days but im too stubborn lol i want that weight loss so bad!

Welcome back and i look forward to getting to know you and work through our struggles together!

Hi all. It's been forever since I've been on here. Can a girl jump back in?

Steph3443,
How frustrating! I'm sorry! Please forgive me if you have already answered these questions, but have you changed up the type of exercise you're doing? Or maybe go over calories for a few days (sensibly, of course), then get back into normal range? These are the questions I have heard before. I am just now getting out of a year long plateau. Of course mine was completely my own making. I ate like crap and only worked out a couple of times a week, only giving it half of my energy. So I can't say I know exactly what you are feeling right now. :(

I havent written in ages, although it looks im not the only one struggling to keep in touch.

I have come to lament!

I am so frustrated with my weight loss journey. I have been working my butt off so so hard and ive been at a plateau for almost 2 months now. I have increased the intensity of my work outs, i work out hard 6 days a week and walk 4 miles each day as well. I eat between 1700 - 1900 calories a day but burn around 3000 - 3100. I've been very faithful and ive lost nothing, not weight, not inches! How is this possible? My Dr's answer.. my body has found its ideal weight so just be happy were i am... yes because being 100 pounds over ideal weight medically is healthy... ARRRGG!!!

Last message was not cheerful.

The good news is we can change the future. Just don't eat!

As easy as that we can transform the future!

Life is short. Your actions determine the kind of life you lead. Do you want to spend 40 years as a fat person or as an attractve happy person. Do you want an attractive spouse or a FAT one.

I once had a girlfriend who was, well fat. She loved pizza as I do. Once when we were eating she complained she didn't have a date for the high school prom. I thought, but didnt say, well that pizza you are eating is really your prom date. She had a choice pizza or prom date and she choose pizza.

I don't enjoy pizza the way I used to. Oops there goes my trophy wife, there goes my sexy date for Friday, there goes my knees, there goes diabetis , there goes my good life, etc ...

TVP is defatted and dried soy protein-textured vegetable protein. Bob's Red mill makes it. A little goes a long way. I "tricked" my meat-eating s/o into eating vegan chili, and lots of it cuz he went back for seconds and thirds. It's really got great texture and holds on to flavors really well.

Trying to substitute yard work for exercise. But it is raining in VA now. I like to sub low impact work for exercise cause I also get important things done. Mowing, trimimg, painting, repair, weeeing, etc ... These activities also burn calories and get some real work done.

While doing it I realize I am doing exercise and not working. makes me happier about it all.

Have you ever used TVP in chili or spaghetti? It also makes pretty good taco filling.

I like to add vegetables to most recipes. Its a trick that lowers the total calories in just about any recipe.

To chili I add carrots, green peppers, onions, and celery. It cuts the calories a lot and make it more filling.

To spaghetti sauce I add carrots, bell pepper, etc and use spaghetti squash instead of pasta.

Less meat means a lot less calories and less harmful fat.

and the kids loved it. It smells awesome. I am not hungry right now, but I will have some if not later, definitely tomorrow.
