That's really surprising that she didn't tell you anything especially since you two posted so much together. Hmmm, not sure what to think about this!

That does happen, though it seems odd that she just left, with no word to anyone on the team.

I still see her profile on my friends list but it doesn't let me click. So maybe she left Spark?

Hi SWEET_CAROLYN - That's nice that you volunteered. I will have to go look at her profile and see if she's posted lately. I don't think that's like her to just disappear. I hope everything is okay with her.

Good morning, MARIENOW!

I don't know where SASSISPRING went; I noticed she hadn't posted in 43 days or so (at the time) and there was no leader, so I volunteered.

I'm hoping to build a good space here, obviously with everyone else's help!

LESLIELENORE, I don't have a support system at all. I need to change that though. I just don't have people in my life that I feel the need to get closer to. I have family but there's baggage there. I would really love to meet a nice man who has a huge family so that I could have people to bond with.

And WOW, a 10-day migraine? That sounds like torture.

Did SASSISPRING leave? I just noticed she wasn't the leader anymore.

Sorry about the passing of your Mom. I can understand how you feel because my Mom was my best friend. It's been very difficult to be without her. I was at a family event this weekend and it was difficult not to have my Mom there. I had to deal with everything on my own including having to talk to some people I was estranged from. Certain family members I would really rather not have anything to do with but I'm sort of forced to when I see them. I dealt with it but I would have really loved my Mom as a sounding board. She would completely understand how I feel. I wish I had good advice to give but all I can say is remember that the love your Mom had for you is still here. You just have to tap into it when you forget that.

Hi. I've been off of Spark People for awhile due to a job that is just nuts and trying to help my Mom. Well, my Mom has passed and I'm concerned for me for the same reasons you list. I have a very small social circle and no close friends. My close friend was my Mom and now she's gone. My chat buddy, my sounding board, it has all ended and I'm really at a loss. It is very hard to make friends. So, I'm hoping there are some suggestions for how to make friends and re-build my social circle? Thank you.

During the wicked 10 day migraine that I had, I had very little appetite... and I lost 12 pounds in those 10 days. Not a suggested weight loss method! Since the migraine broke my appetite has definitely returned, but I lost another 2 pounds. Weird.

I was reminded of one of the difficulties of living alone during that ordeal. I had to call upon friends and family to help me out, and it was awkward to ask my friends for help. One of them helped out of the goodness of her heart. Another helped for the drama factor, and so she would have some ammunition to make me feel obligated to do what she wants me to do (whether I have the resources or capability to help her out, or not). My family members came through for me without question.

I guess my point in all that is that I may be single with no kids, but I was reminded that I still need to cultivate a support system. Living in social isolation (which happens at times because I don’t have a partner or kids, and have trouble making meaningful personal connections with friends), is a dangerous place to find oneself in an emergency or crisis.

I know that many of my acquaintances who are SNK, don’t have the same trouble that I do making friends, or simply asking for help when it’s needed. But the experience definitely brought home to me the importance of the social network.

Do you have a healthy and active social network in your every day life? Or do you struggle with that like I do?

Thanks Chandra!

I agree and generally try to be better about using measurements beyond the scale... sometimes it gets the better of me. I have a lot of experience with plateaus - not so much with maintenance (someday...).

Maybe it was Murphy's Law that after I vented about the stuck scale it started to move! I ended up hitting my medium term goal today - the exact date I had been aiming for. This has never happened for me before despite years of disciplined eating and exercise. I was so happy that I nearly cried. The number isn't nearly as important as the overall health improvement I'm experiencing, but it was a concrete item that I saw in an instant.

Whatever the psychological reasoning, I'm in a pretty good mood and just set my next goal marker for the end of April.

I hope everyone else is doing well as we all keep chasing down our goals!

I don’t know, but a partial win still sounds like a win to me. Sure the number on the scale dropping, dropping, dropping, is “sexy” and motivational and meets some visceral and emotional completion bias we have as humans (well most people tend to have, though not necessarily all). But the way we FEEL, our measurements, our health markers (BP, glucose, cholesterol, resting HR) are all more useful indicators of how successful we are being at changing our bodies. That said... I totally get the frustration of the scale not moving much despite your concerted efforts. I have been there! I didn’t like it either, lol. I had to give myself a stern talking to about the value of all the things I mentioned above... and it still only partially worked. lol. We DO get so attached to seeing that number on the scale go down, down, down. I think that’s what makes both plateaus and maintenance so dang hard!

So after all that extra hustle the last three weeks.... I lost ONE pound. Talk about frustrating - especially since I'm so close to my next goal.

However, I also took my measurements today and during the same time frame somehow I took 1.5" off my waist and 2" off my hips. I still want the scale victory, but I'll call this a partial win.

Thanks Chandra! I really appreciate someone else knowing what this feels like. I can't really talk to many people about it in person because they respond with "but look how much you've already lost". It's nice that they recognize that I've been working on getting healthier, but doesn't do much for the current obstacle.

I've decided to keep my target nutritional levels (already habits) the same, but layered the 'Spring into Shape' bootcamp challenge from SP onto my usual salsa and gym regiment. Hopefully adding some extra burn to my days will start moving the needle down again.

I have been there and it is so frustrating! You can either change something up hoping to give your system a jolt and shift things back into weight loss mode, or keep doing what has worked for you and be patient. Generally things will start moving again after a time. At least that has been my experience. I have tried both ways... Either way worked for me. But, I am trying to build life long habits, so being patient worked out better for me in the long run.

What do you do to jolt your body back into weight loss when it gets stuck? Over the past three weeks I've been bouncing around in the same 3-4 pound range but not losing despite high activity levels and sticking to my calorie range.

Just feeling frustrated these days...

Oh no, I hope you feel better fast! A really bad cold/flu has been going around Boston and a ton of my salsa friends have been hit with it lately. (I'm taking copious amount of Emergen-C and hoping it passes me by.)

Sounds like you avoid the empty cocktail calories year-round :-)

As of this morning, I'm less than 5 pounds away from my next goal and it's starting to sink in that after years of false starts and plateau brick walls, I've finally covered some serious ground! I still have a ways to go before I'm where I ultimately want to be, but for the first time in a very long time it feels possible. I want everyone to have this feeling!

I always do a dry January. But that’s because I cannot drink with the medication I am on. lol. I have managed to catch a viral infection (I think). If I am still sick on Monday I will call the doctor, but right now I am just feeling cruddy.
