GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF STRENGTH THIS MOTHER'S DAY

On Mother’s Day, we think of flower arrangements, chocolates, and sentimental homemade cards. On top of these delightful gifts from others, this Mother’s Day, consider giving yourself a gift, too—a gift in the form of strength training. 

Wait, what? you ask. I thought Mother’s Day was about relaxation, pampering, and hopefully my husband or kids making a meal… 

It is about these things, but ultimately, Mother’s Day is about love. And what better way to show yourself the love you deserve than with exercise?   

While we might think of exercise as medicine, in fact, it’s actually a gift for our soul. It energizes us and fuels happiness. It also provides an escape. It’s a break from daily pressures, where we moms do something just for ourselves.   

But in order for exercise to be a gift, we have to see it as such. “It’s important to keep in mind that how moms frame or think about exercise really impacts whether it feels energizing or depleting,” says Michelle Segar, PhD, University of Michigan researcher and author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness. “Once moms start seeing the new ways how physical movement can be a gift they start craving it,” she says.  

“Gifts typically are fun and feel good to do in some ways,” Dr. Segar says. “Strength training gifts us with strength, better balance, feelings of empowerment, and improved posture,” she says.  

Shifting your Movement Mindset 

If you’ve viewed exercise as another annoying thing on your to-do list, you’re not going to switch to seeing as a gift overnight. Start by reminding yourself that physical activity—particularly a workout that combines strength training and cardiovascular exercise—reduces anxiety and depression. “Regular activity is an elixir of life—it not only energizes us and lifts mood, it helps us think better and be more creative,” Dr. Segar says. 

There’s science to back this up. According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, doing a mix of an aerobic activity and strength training for at least 30 minutes, three to five times a week, can do the following:  

Help keep your learning, thinking, and judgment keen as you ageLower your risk of depressionImprove your sleepReduce anxiety and stress 

Both the aerobic exercise and strength training that make up the Curves workout release endorphins, which make you feel good. Strength training’s endorphin release is particularly powerful, so it’s a good idea for a busy mom to include strength training in her workout to reap its benefits to emotional health. 

In addition to reminding yourself that moving helps you feel better in body, mind, and spirit, it’s crucial that you give yourself permission to move in ways that feel good to you. “It’s time to toss out any ‘rules’ you have for exercise because they actually tend to prevent busy women from fitting regular physical activity into their lives,” Dr. Segar says.   

Here’s how:  

Embrace exercise as a gift. 

“We know moving lifts our mood and fuels us, even when we do it for just a few minutes at a time,” Dr. Segar says. “So the best way to transform exercise from a chore into a gift is to do in a way that makes you feel good and fits into your schedule.” That may not mean a 60-minute gym routine but instead, a quick but powerful circuit workout that fits into your schedule.  Segar shows us how to take specific steps to transform exercise from a chore to a gift in No Sweat.  

Work out with a friend. 

Most women don’t feel like they have enough time for exercise or their friends, so why not combine the two? Invite a friend to join Curves, so the two of you can work out together and catch up. At Curves, you always work out alongside others, which gives you added motivation and support.  Do it any way you like. 

One of the best things about exercise and the reason it is truly a gift is you can do it your way. The traditional Curves Circuit workout is available at any fitness level, so you can do it at your own speed. Want to switch things up a little? You can also take a class to improve your balance, core strength or overall tone. Or take a dance class to add in some fun.  It’s your special time—a gift! —so spend it the way you want.

Hi! I go 3x a week, most weeks. My youngest daughter, 11, now enjoys playing basketball. So I try to get out a couple days a week for 30 mins. with her. Also, we have found frisbee and chasing after it is fun for all 4 of us, other daughter, 14, and DH. It's been a great family time after dinner.

We have 13 machines and we do the circuit 2x.

I go to Curves at least 3x a week. On my "off" days, I usually go for a walk for 30-45 minutes.

I don't have to be perfect, I just have to do better. :)

About the tush factor...the seat on my bike has extra padding and has springs that absorb some of the shock. Well worth the investment!

I've got a bike too... I rarely ride it though... hmmm, maybe I can convince my DD to get me to go on rides with her more often. She loves to ride, and I never really wanted to go out... it kills my tush! But, now that I have lost 25 lbs or so, maybe it won't hurt so bad...LOL.

I go around our circut 2 times, we have 13 machines and 12 boards. I go to curves 3x's a week, walk 3 to 4 miles 5/6x's a week, and I just got a bike for Mother's Day. I'm thinking I'll ride that a couple of times a week instead of my evening walk.

Thank You Tina!!! I LOVE when I hear other members explaining the principles of Curves correctly because it means their club is doing that too!! Makes me so excited!!

You are absolutely exactly correct on the "off" days don't work the machines as hard thing. That is exactly what we suggest AND for the exact reason you said!! So exciting for me.

So, yes, you can go 5-6 days a week, just make sure to lower your effort on the machines. Or go for walks or do some other sort of exercise. Whatever works for you.

As for how many times you go around, it depends entirely upon how many machines are on your circuit. I believe if it is the basic 8 up to 10 then it's 3x around. If you have more than that, i.e. our club has 13 machines, you only need to go twice. That's the "official" answer.

I go 3x a week. Typically MWF. On the off days I get on my treadmill or if it's nice I'll take a brisk walk outside. Just remember, if you choose to go to Curves every day then you need to relax your workout on the alternating days because your muscles do need a chance to heal/rebuild. When you work the muscles, you are tearing them and the healing is what strengthens them. At least that's the way it was explained to me. So on the alternating days you would not work the machines so hard but work harder on the recovery stations to get the cardio.

Do you best and let God do the rest.

I go to Curves 5x a week. Every other day I vary the amount of strength I use to exercise on the machines.

I generally go to Curves 3x a week... I do have a 24 hour pass for my Curves, so if I miss on MWF, I can make up for it on the weekends.

I started out doing my Curves workouts MWF then on TTS&S doing strength training from the videos here on SP, but found I was burning myself out since Curves is also strenth training/cardio... so now, I usually do mostly stretching or calesthentic on my off days... no strength, or at least very little.

Oh, and now that it's getting nice outside... I have decided to start adding Walking to my routine... I did both Curves and 2.5 miles last night...

I do 3x around the circuit... but the total number around veries between each member... we have pretty much determined, that some Curves have more machines, recovery stations, and/or steps then others...so the total number of circuits very with each Curves.

At my Curves, I do 3x around to equal 30 minutes... I actually do 4 machines 2-3 times on each round though, as you work different areas depending on how you use the machine...so my total circuit workout equates to about 40-45 minutes total... then I do my abs and strength training then cool down.

Hi there. I got 3x to 4x a week. On some weeks I also walk for 30-45 minutes in the neighborhood on days that I feel like it. Of course, I also marathon shop so I stay on my feet all day on some weekend days. Hee hee... I do not like it on days that I miss Curves if I am scheduled to go. It feels weird. I go twice around the circuit when I am there.

I didn't see this so I thought I'd ask you ladies a three part question. First, how often do you go to Curves (i.e. 3x/wk)? Second, how many times to you typically go around the circuit in a workout? Thirdly, do you supplement your Curves workouts with any other workouts on your off days?

I started about a month ago and the trainer there got me going around the circuits 3xs. I have, however, been sticking to going only 3xs per week. The problem with that is I can feel a decrease in my energy levels on off days. I'm just wondering if that is affecting anyone else and what you do to combat it.
