Can't believe I lost a quarter of a pound over Thanksgiving and birthday weekend. Got outside lights up and a few things inside. I work slow. Have a great day. Janice

Tree is up and fluffed! I'm waiting for help with the lights now, and then we can put ornaments. I've had to stop my daughter from putting them on before the lights all day!

How 'bout the Pens last night? :D

Ceeduze---That's a true Steeler fan. Some people just don't get that a true fan sticks through thick and thin. It was a very nice weekend and nowI have to start the new week by turning 66. Oh well, it is only a number. Have a nice day. Janice

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. It was a crazy retail weekend, as I suspected. Glad it's over, but it's really just getting warmed up. Next weekend should really be in full swing. I'm thankful that I get to sleep in tomorrow! I don't have to be at work until noon. Pheww!

Bummer about the Steelers game, but Dixon did great for it being his first career start!

Have a good night everyone.

Hope everyone had a wonderful 'Thanksgiving. Tried not to overeat but had to have a piece of pumpkin pie, just the filling and sugar-free Cook Whip. Now it is time to face the Christmas parties. Have 2 next week.
I would love to be in Pittsburgh to see the windows. I remeber riding the streetcar downtown and walking all over looking in the windows. Now it is a 45 minute ride in any direction to get to a Mall. I guess everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Best wishes to all. Janice

I have lots to do today. Have to work for part of the day (on my vacation) meeting the new owner of a client business. Plan to pick up Christmas cards and my DD while I am out. Then it's back to my house to finish cleaning before DS and DIL arrive to stay for a few days. That is followed by baking for tomorrow and visits from DD's HS friends.

Good morning everyone! Happy Thanksgiving Eve! OOOH, I'm so excited about Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday. I have a "short" day today, working til 4. I'm really excited. Then again, it's a 12 hour shift on Friday.

Hope you all have a great day, and if you're travelling, be safe!

Erin, I have a pretty relaxed work environment, so I can eat whenever I need to. However, during the holidays it's easy to fall into the trap of food court food and take-out. I always have plenty of healthy snacks on hand. I also wear my pedometer to make sure I'm getting my steps in. That's uually not too difficult during the holidays though! I also try to keep a water bottle handy in my back room to stay hydrated. I'm working a 12 hour shift Friday and Saturday, so we'll see how it goes.

Happy Steelers Sunday all!

We had a good time at Light Up Night. Well, except for the group of drunken young men who were next to us during the fireworks. First loud, then swearing around the many small children there, then finally one of them decides to urinate right there in the middle of the crowd. At that point several of us women said something while holding back our men who wanted to do more than just talk! Too bad there is never a cop around when you need one.

Happy Thursday indeed! So, I started back up on here a few days ago. Since going to the gym the last 3 days, I've slept like a rock. I'm feeling pretty good today, except for that I sat in gridlock traffic b/c of an accident this morning. Other than that, it's almost Friday, which makes it great :)

I wish everyone good luck on staying on track today!

OOOH, I would love to go to light-up night but unfortunately, I work in retail so I miss out on a lot of the fun holiday experiences since I am working during those "peak" times. I saw a sign the other day for a holiday house tour and thought that would be wonderful but it's right smack dab in the middle of a Saturday. That's not gonna work!

Enjoy your Thursday everyone! Looks like my Thursday hike is not gonna happen today. Bummer.

Welcome, TAURUSRISING! I'm actually from east of the city, but I am sure there are people on the team from the Cranberry area! Looking forward to getting to know you better!

Janice, where are you living now? How did everything to at TOPS? Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

LOOOOOOONG day for me today at work, starts with a meeting at 8:30 and doesn't really stop until about 6:30. Thank goodness I'm off tomorrow! I may sleep in! Although, I certainly cannot sleep in the way I used to...if I sleep until 7 I think I'm doing pretty well.

MMM...that makes me hungry for a Primanti's sandwich!

I noticed some great recipes on the Daily Spark yesterday. There was a recipe for boneless "wings" that I think I might try...it seemed pretty simple. I'll have to find the link and share. Did anyone else see it?

Basically Primanti's takes any sandwich you like - whatever meat & cheese combination - and tops it with fries and coleslaw.

ROTFL @ SEEKINGMYSELF'S joke!

I agree with breaking it down. We make them at home and get pretty close. The secret is the cole slaw. Shredded cabbage, vinegar, salt, pepper and splenda will do it just fine. If anyone is interested.

Once you break it all down, you can save it in the Nutrition tracker as a food group so that next time you can pull it up easily.

It's definitely tough to pass up a Primanti's sandwich! I love them too. The best advice I can give is to break each item down (cole slaw, fries, meat, cheeses, condiments, bread, etc.) It will take a while, but that's really the only way to do it. And even that is probably not an accurate reading, but it's the best we can do since their website doesn't have nutritional information on it.

Good luck, and enjoy the game! Should be a great one!

Hey quick question. I am going to the Steeler game Sunday and trying to pre plan a bit for food during the game. I was wondering if there is a way to calculate a Primanti's sandwich or do you have to do it separately?

Note: I know it will go against my diet but I want to enjoy going to the game with no stress and second of all there was 2 times my brother and I did not have a Primanti's sandwich before a game we went to and we lost both. Thanks.

It has been 49 years since I moved from Pittsburgh but the story of the devil and the man from Pittsburgh hit home. I laughed so hard my husband thought I was nuts. My dad worked at U.S. Steel, Munhall works on the open hearth. I formed this picture in my mind and I am sure my dad was kicked up to heaven because he had his heat on earth. A little joke -

A guy from Pittsburgh dies and is sent to Hell. He had been a horrible man his entire life.

The devil puts him to work breaking up rocks with a sledgehammer. To make it worse, he cranks up the temperature and the humidity. After a couple of days, the devil checks in on his victim to see if he is suffering adequately. The devil is baffled as the guy from Pittsburgh is happily swinging his hammer and whistling a happy tune.

The devil walks up to him and says, "I don't understand his. I've turned the heat way up, it's humid, and you’re crushing rocks; why are you so happy?"

The guy from Pittsburgh, with a big smile, looks at the devil and replies, "This is great! It reminds me of August in Pittsburgh . Hot, humid, a good place to work. It reminds me of home. This is fantastic!"

The devil, extremely perplexed, walks away to ponder the remarks of the guy from Pittsburgh. Then he decides to drop the temperature, send down a driving rain and torrential wind. Soon, Hell is a wet, muddy mess. Walking in mud up to his knees with dust blowing into his eyes, the guy from Pittsburgh is happily slogging through the mud pushing a wheelbarrow full of crushed rocks.

Again, the devil asks how he can be happy in such conditions. The guy from Pittsburgh replies, "This is great! Just like April in Pittsburgh. It reminds me of working out in the yard with spring planting!"

The devil is now completely baffled but more determined to make the guy from Pittsburgh suffer. He makes the temperature plummet. Suddenly Hell is blanketed in snow and ice. Confident that this will surely make the guy from Pittsburgh unhappy, the devil checks in on him.

He is again shocked at what he sees. The guy from
Pittsburgh is dancing, singing, and twirling his sledgehammer as he cavorts in glee. "How can you be so happy? Don't you know its 40 below zero!?" screams the devil.

Jumping up and down, the guy from Pittsburgh throws a snowball at the devil and yells, "Hell's frozen over! This means the Pirates won the World Series."

Great job Debbie! I love walking through the zoo on a beautiful fall day - we do a lot less of it now that DS is older :-(

Way to go Debbie! You had a great day for the walk. The weather has been amazing! I'd love to have this kind of weather all year.

I went back to the gym this morning after a long time off. I feel okay. It was tough. I'm hoping that I'm not too sore later!

Have a great Monday everyone!

Well, we wrote up an offer last night. If all goes according to plan and we can come to an agreement we will put our house on the market. Craziness, but exciting!

I am looking forward to the nice weekend as well. Harry the Shih Tzu likes to go walking in the leaves

Good morning everyone, and happy Friday! Welcome to all the new members checking out the chat thread. Seems like I missed a lot this week! Work is getting CrAzY! But I wouldn't have it any other way. Retail is all about the holidays...although I could do without the holiday commercials already.

Looks like today's going to be chilly but the weekend looks like it's going to be beautiful! I can't wait. I think I may go for a hike on Sunday if the forecast stays the way it is. Woohoo!

Oh, and on a side note, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Regent Square and old houses.

Have a fabulous day everyone!

That is too funny - I keep telling my Mom "well at least we all live around here!" DH and I worked at the Heinz History Center and we could have easily chased museum jobs across the country. The funny thing is my Mom is originally from Delaware and she is a worse Pittsburgher when it comes to crossing a bridge or going through a tunnel than my Dad who is the native :-)

Hey, Chris, I am just a few blocks from those schools. After having my oldest live in CA for over a year, and my middle child in FL right now, I would be happy if all were anywhere in this area! I am originally from NY and find that all the areas of Pittsburgh have their own special charms.

Hey Patricle - we were looking in Highland Park as well. There are some great old houses over there but some of them are huge and way too much for the three of us :-)

Hey Debbie - I grew up in McCandless. My parents are still there and bemoan the fact that we all live in different parts of the city (I am one of four!) I am in the Squirrel Hill, my sister is in Turtle Creek, another sister is in Brentwood and my brother is in Carnegie. My parents are near NA's intermediate and Carson Middle.

See ya around!

Hi, all, almost forgot that the November thread was started! I live in McCandless in the North Hills. We probably had about 40 trick or treaters this year. Our street is at the outer edge of an older plan - sometimes we gets lots of kids and sometimes almost none.

I really love old houses. They are so unique. My son bought one recently in Squirrel Hill. They spent a month fixing it up before they moved in. Ours is about as old as I am (51) and it has some character, but nothing like the 100+ year old ones.

Hey everyone, I never really posted on here before. I've been on SP for about a year (this time around). I live in Highland Park. We never get any trick or treaters at our apartment complex, so we spent the day up in Sharon, PA. Have a great one!

chris, you are much more industrious for me. Thats great that you can get in a workout on the lunch hour. I work at CONSOL Energy at Southpointe, and get 30 mins for lunch, but get to leave at 4,so thats nice. I usually try to get on the treadmill here at home after work, or do a Leslie Sansone DVD. Not sure which one it will be tonight.

I kinda know where you are talking about, Squirrel Hill, but Regent Square, I don't know. I should ask DH, he is a Pittsburgh native. I am slowly learning my way around. We live so close to downtown, which I like. Plus we can get anywhere pretty quickly too. My drive to work is about 19 miles, and takes 25-30, not too bad at all.

Our biggest project right now with the house, is to get the master bedroom finished so we can move into it. We discovered a broken pipe in the corner ceiling, so that had to be fixed, then re-plastered. Then we textured the ceiling. Now need to paint the walls. WE have 4 gas fireplaces in the house, two might be operable. One is in the master bedroom, with beautiful light green tile, another in the guest bedroom, one in the living room with a really big stone fireplace and the other in the dining room.
We had insulation blown from inside, in June, so it was probably good that we hadn't painted any walls. I hope we don't have any more $1000 gas bills this winter. Its a huge house for just the two of us, and two dogs!

off to tend to the spaghetti!

Colleen - that is too funny about your house! We love older homes - our first was from 1903. Our current house is the "baby" and is from 1931. We know that DS will probably go to Central Catholic for high school so we don't have to stay in the city. Our 1903 house was in Regent Square and we have been looking back over that way. The house we looked at definitely needs some plaster work done and you can see daylight through the chimney! However, all the fireplaces are in place and there is still the original butler's pantry in the kitchen and the back staircase (my two favorite things!)Obviously, we need to sell our house too - here's hoping it works out if we decide to go for it :-)

I work at Duquesne and am able to hit the gym at lunchtime - did about 1.5 miles on the treadmill. I've been trying to get back into running so I usually walk .25 mile then run .25 miles. Hope you had a great walk!

chris, our house is from that time period, built in early 1900s, and it needs lots of work. So we got it cheap two years ago. Love the hardwood floors, high ceilings, wood trim....most of the walls need repair(plaster, not drywall), and then repainting. Ongoing process!

Now Friday night's Pens game would have been the one to see. We went to the Rivers during the third period, when we were losing, were walking through the casino, when we saw the game still on and the score was 3-3 in overtime. So we stood and watched with everyone else, what an exciting game!

well, off to go walking for lunch, will check back later!

thanks for the nice welcome!

Colleen

Welcome Colleen! This year DS was 14 and feeling a bit "too old" for trick or treating :-) We took him to his first Pens game. Unfortunately, they lost but a good time was still had by all. Turns out 2 girls from his class were there and they texted back and forth until we spotted each other and waved like crazy people across the arena.

Have been looking for a new house - we currently live in Squirrel Hill right off of Beechwood Boulevard. Went to an open house in Edgewood and saw a Victorian house that we love...going back tonight with our agent - exciting times! :-)

Wow Colleen! 100 trick or treaters!

I lived in Cranberry Twp. for 25 years now (but not in a plan) and never had one ever! On the bright side, no candy to worry about eating:D

hi everyone, new to Pittsburgh(well been here 2 years), and new to Sparkpeople. I live in Elliott, near the West End.

Yes, November is here, and what a gorgeous day we have! A day for yard work, and just enjoying the sun!

We had about 100 trick or treaters last night! What a fun group!

OOOH boy, here we go! November is here! I am still loving fall, but I just realized that the next manager schedule that I do will have Thanksgiving on it...dunno if I'm ready for that or not. I guess it doesn't matter, since time is flying to it!

Did you all have a good Halloween? No trick or treaters were here, which is not a big surprise. Last year we got only one, and this year my street is closed for construction. Oh well.

I'd also like to say that I enjoyed my extra hour of sleep, but that didn't work much either...I woke up an hour early. My internal clock got the better of me!

Have a wonderful day everyone! It looks gorgeous out and I am going to try to enjoy it!
