Glad you're back and cleared for a HM. Good advice on the ST. It's one of my resolutions this year - to get back to strength training, including my lowers and especially my core.

I agree with everyone here - ST AND XT are both key components of training. I got to the point where all I was doing was running, and look where it got me - surgery and lots of rehab.

And, yes, the clamshell is one that I do, too. It is great for the piriformis muscle.

Ah yes .. the good old clam shells!! My PT also had me doing those! Which reminds me ... I should get on the floor and do some, my hip has been playing up again!

Jodi, she now has me doing single leg squats in varying positions and degrees of difficulty. I am pretty advanced at this point as she is targeting specific muscles in my hip area. The mainstay has been my clamshells. Lay on your side with knees together at about 40 degree angle WITH a resistance band around your knees. Raise the upper knee up and put it down...just like a clamshell. Do these 20 times for 2 reps. You should feel the burn in your hips and you do! I preactically do these in my sleep and it has helped my hips tone up! That is just one.

YAY Laurie! That's fantastic news!!!

What sort of ST did she have you doing? I'm always looking for ideas, not to mention ways to prevent injury!

Happiness is not a matter of good fortune or worldly possessions. It's a mental attitude. It comes from appreciating what we have, instead of being miserable about what we don't have. It's so simple - yet so hard for the human mind to comprehend.

I wrote this for my blog today but some of you who have been following my woes have been womdering how its been going so here is my update:

After talking with PT Candi at great length today I am beyond giddy. First of all, just another visit or two and I am DONE with PT! PT has concluded that what I have been experiencing is neural tension and that my Achilles is perfectly fine. Since I experience NO pain or discomfort while running, the long nerve that goes from hip to foot is the culprit. What is causing THAT discomfort is actually normal BUT the degree that I have feeling feeling it is because of my lack of hip strength. After all of my ST she told me I am 75% to complete strengthening now. WOOT!

She said that it was a great turn of events that I came in as the way my physical condidtioning was, I would have had bad knee problems by the end of the summer. That, folks, is why ST is vitally important in conjunction with running!

Candi told me that I will be absolutely amazed at how I will feel when I hit the streets this Spring. Evidently with all my ST, my endurance will be remarkable. I am very very anxious to find out!

PT Candi also told me that there is absolutely NO reason at all why I shouldn't train for and run a Half Marathon this year. You hear that???!!! NO REASON! That gives me lots to think about as I originally wanted to run the Quad Cities Half Marathon OR the Des Moines Half Marathon. Either way, I feel like I am back to my regular running self along with my hopes and dreams.
