Good evening everyone!

I'm 45 and have been lifting on and off since I was 14!

I love the feeling of being strong and healthy, exhibiting none of the ache's and pain's my peers seems to be finding.

There is nothing like the rush of a great set...is that bad? Nope! :)

Welcome! How exciting for you! My grandson is 2 and the love of our lives. I have a long ways to go to get in shape, but my grandson is a great motivator. Just to be safe, I didn't buy any Halloween candy. The kids will have to make do with play-doh, bags of sunflower seeds, potato chips or granola bars. None of those will tempt me.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

Good morning and happy Wednesday! My name is Marcia and I'm a 51 years young northern California girl. I have always worked out, never been seriously over weight, usually the 10-20 pounds over range. Last summer my daughter got married and I really wanted to get in shape for that. I started working out at home, then joined a gym and then ordered Tony Horton's P90X. All have been beneficial, but strength training and cardio have become my passion. I'm really excited to have found all of you! I work out 6 days a week and my goal (for this week especially) is NO HALLOWEEN CANDY!!! I cant stop at one little ol' piece! By the way, my daughter is now pregnant and this will be my first grandchild! I need to stay in shape for I hope lots of babysitting!

I think Massage Therapists are among God's chosen people. My therapist has magical hands and a fantastic personality. She has literally brought me to tears with pain relief.

I will look for Rodney Yee's DVD and hopefully that will help.

I have a dvd called Yoga for Back Care, it is one of Rodney Yee's. It works very well for me, I have a couple of herniated discs in my lower back that I keep pretty much under control with yoga, a good chiropractor, and massage. I am also a massage therapist, so I have a rather biased opinion on that, ha! I am getting a massage on Monday and can't wait.

I use ice at night while snuggled in bed to keep the rest of me warm. I actually alternate with heat. I also have a DVD I think its called no more back pain. But the guy is so dry and its such a hassle to go way forward to get to the exercises; that I give up (smile). I'll have to look for yoga for back pain.

There is a team called bachache smackache that I'm a member of here that has been very helpful

Hi Jazzy, massage is definitely the way to go. Heat didn't help at all, so I'll try ice. It's just so darn cold in the house in the morning, that the thought of icing is downright unappealing. I take ibuprofen too with a valium to relax the muscles. Flexeril is way to strong for me. I have a dvd of yoga for people with bad backs. It does help a lot, so I need to get that setup working again. Have to rearrange the furniture.

Thanks for the article. I need all the help I can get (big smile). I'm thinking that on those days when the pain makes cardio difficult; that may be the perfect time to lift some weights.

Hi:CARBOHOLIC08 I just wanted to tell you that last year sciatica on the right was a killer. This year the left piraformis is killing me. The massage does help a lot.

The heating pad is sooting. But for real pain relief I need an ice pack and ibuprofen. The stronger stuff does not work as well.

Great article, thanks for sharing it! I am ready to hit it tomorrow doing some upper body work. I soooooooo need it. This will be a huge answer to a lot of my issues. I just got so busy working that I let myself get out of whack. My job is very physical, and strength training is perfect for it (I work for UPS). I'm ready!!!! emoticon

I am getting a massage on Monday and I can't wait!! I will be trading with a friend of mine....I am a massage therapist as well.

Hmmmmm, those Amex points are a great idea. I didn't even think about using those and I have a ton from my business card. That cycling trainer might be within reach after all, hmmmm...

I am so jealous! Haven't had a massage since I got laid off over a year ago. I'm 55 and went for an hour walk today. Sciatica is acting up, but periformis is fine as long as I stay away from Hatha yoga. Guess I'll try the heating pad. With a little luck, maybe we'll get our hot tub fixed this week.

Hi There: I'm at the big 52 and my body said "just do a short workout and go get your massage" and that's exactly what I did. (smile). I did 18 min. of prevention's 2 week turnaround cardio and burned 108 calories. Average heart rate = 117 and max = 137.

The massage was so wonderful. My periformis muscle acts up every so often and my therapist is great.

I'm a big fan of free weights. SP had an article about free weights and unilateral training that was really interesting. I'll see if I can find it again. I'm in the process of trying to order a Nintendo Wii to add variety to my workouts. I'm trying to use AMEX points and it's kind of a pain, but at least I won't have to spend any money. (unemployed)

Hey ladies! I am a wee 3 months from the big 5-0, and I'm actually looking forward to it. The 2nd half of my 40's has been injury after injury...and I'm thinking 50's time to knock it off.

I'm rehab'g after knee surgery and starting to use the weight machines at the gym now that I'm allowed. Kind of nervous about free weights until the knee's a little more stable.

Do most of you use free weights? I have a book that I got some time ago that uses dumbells, and it was working for me quite well, at least as a starting point.

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

Really busy day today so I did a portion of an exercise DVD that did had a strength training segment. It wasn't much but I did 98 min of cardio yesterday. Will try to get in more weight related workouts. I took too many days off and had to catch up. I'm feeling really good, however.

I'm so excited to have found this sparkteam, iron Maidens! i just love the name! I love working out w/weights, but lacked the motivation to do it solo. i used to have a work out partner and it was fun and the results were amazing. Going on 48 (one month) and this year I became a certified spin (cycle) instructor. i work along w/my fulltime job in the medical field, at 24hr fitness. the perks are great! I recently purchased personal training package and am faithfully having him push me hard during our sessions. I love the way my body looks from the waist up and want to get my core strong. i want to develop my back more along w/my triceps. So this was my 'early' birthday present to me! You have to take the time for yourself on a daily basis, and my workouts and my training are just that, for me. I than have a better attitude and am more confident when I know I did something good for me today. I plan on being fit even as I say goodbye soon to my 40's. its only going to get better!! emoticon

Hello All: I'm so psyched and so inspired and so happy. I'm on my way. I am starting slowly as I'm no stranger to injury. I'm making progress. I will start light and work up over time. I now know I don't have to workout using a weight that is too heavy for me.

Things just keep getting better, being fit and young looking has its advantages. I started dating a man in his early thirties, and yes he knows how old I am!! Men my age just can't keep up with me!

I started a new job, women half my age are asking me how to keep fit. I tell everyone to pump some serious iron!!

Hallelujah - it's about time women began celebrating their age and their self, both...it's so nice to see y'all doing it so well!!

I turned 42 this year and am completely fine with it...if anyone asks my age, I pop out the answer...it is what it is, right?...seriously, as far as becoming fit, I think I am only getting better..I have participated in a variety of athletic activities during my life, but about 12 years ago, strength-training became my first love and mainstay...I used to lift very heavy (740 lbs. for 3 reps was PB on the leg press), but about three years ago, my body began vehemently objecting and now I lift normally...I am not defined, or cut, but I am strong and I just get a kick out of it almost daily.

I get up, or should I say my alarm goes off, at 4:30 a.m. and I am at the gym to lift from 6 - 7 a.m...after work, 2-3 nights per week, I put in a workout at the pool (I am now an aspiring distance swimmer)...I lift 4 - 6 days per week, depending on which routine I am on...I also watch everything that goes into my body, more and more and more.

I have been told that I look like I am in my 30s, which is cool, but, umm, hello - what, when women turn 40, we are supposed to go to hell in a handbasket??...uh-uh!!...now, if I didn't take care of myself, would I look that way?..I doubt it...I used to smoke, which I stopped in October, 2005...I used to consume much more alcohol but stopped because I just do not have time for a hangover..ahahahahaha...I do occasionally indulge, though.

As far as the differences I notice about being in my 40s - I do not pop out of bed like I used to, let me tell you...it takes me an hour of watching the news, drinking a protein shake and stretching to slither out of bed to get ready for the gym...and, sleep - oh, lord have mercy, sleep has become one of my favorite activities to do...I mean, really, I love my bed and look forward to Sunday mornings when I can sleep in a bit.

Recovery is about the same, I think..although, ironically, I have noticed that, if I take a break, say a week, from lifting, it hurts like hell the week that I go back...so, no more breaks..I will lift very light or decrease sets/reps, but no breaks.

I can't wait to see what 50 will bring!

Rock on, ladies....rock on!

I just finished reading all these entries and am motivated by all of you. To see so many older women like myself looking as good as you all do inspires me to also make that change and I now know I can do it because of you ladies. Worked out w/ weights for the first time last week and it felt great. Am going again tomorrow to do it again. Thanks ladies. Keep the great pictures coming. I would never have guessed that your all my age group, you look so young. emoticon

Hi I'm new here and so glad I found all of you older ladies!! I'm 52 and trying to get it through my head that I can't lift as heavy as I want without hurting myself so I have recently started over lifting reasonably heavy weights like 15lb and watching those shoulders and elbows!!(No matter what weights Cathe is using!! I always feel like a wimp LOL) Everyone here is so inspiring!! Thank you so much.

I'd look at it this way. It doesn't have to be about whether you "want to" or not. We have an obligation to God to make the temples He's given us the best they can be. Our health afflictions can be our message of hope to others who want to give up.
So glad you're feeling better, now just do it!:-)

blessings, Sue

Since July,I have had a series of health episodes that have just worn me out. I am barely making it to the gym to workout once a week. Prior to July, I was going every day and felt awesome. I have lost momentum and am really discouraged. Anyone have sage advice on how to overcome this desire to just give up?

Wow, nice to see so many older ladies here getting in shape. I got into serious weight lifting in my mid 40's and now I am going into my late 40's, competed for the first time last year, and this year gained 14 pounds of lean mass and getting ready to compete in November. I am in better shape than I was in my 20's. I need to remind myself that I am older so I won't overdo it. I may have as much energy as a 25 year old but my body still has older joints, and injuries take longer to heal when you are older.

You can still get into shape ladies, I am a trainer and I am working mostly with regular women over 40 and 50 trying to get in shape, some of them lifting weights for the first time ever...Jack Lalane is 93 and still healthy and lifts weights!!

Thanks, Shining. Good advice. I've been falling down with the consistency part. The only thing I've been consistent about is eating too much.

I've started using weights again, but they are light ones. Older joints need lots of stretching and nothing too heavy to begin with.

I'm 52 and I'm feeling out of shape. Right now I'm at my top weight and it's all flab. There has been a life event that knocked the steam out of me, but now I'm back and feeling better.

Time to lose the flab and gain some muscle!
