I can REALLY relate to Ophelia's story about lifting weights and not losing weight. For some reason, I too thought I was eating healthy and not too much. When I joined SparkPeople in June I began to realize that I was eating too much. My workouts were great but you can't loose the weight by that alone. I love weight training. Today I did a yoga stretch session, followed by a 20 minute abdominal routine and a 30 minute arm routine with weights and using the Bowflex. Nice pump. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thank you Lord for blessing our steps all the way to the end.

Conceive, Believe, Achieve!

It's my 2nd week back at the gym. It's amazing how quickly your muscles regain strength ~ like riding a bicycle.

Shuddec, Kettlebells are fabulous, ALTHOUGH I read THEY SHOULD NOT BE USED by anyone with a heart pacemaker.

As always, check with your health provider before beginning a kettlebell practice.

Many of us LOVE the feeling of swinging the bells. Kettlebell workouts are strength-training AND cardio, simultaneously! A full workout is just 15-30 minutes! Though you can go a bit longer. : )

Love the physical benefits of swinging and lifting kettlebells. Love re-shaping myself and dropping fat, pounds, and dress sizes.

Try reading Tracy Reifkind, The Kettlebell Swing. She's over 50. Lost 120 POUNDS.

Hello everyone! I'm 56 years young and discovered weight training about 5 years ago when I was still under the influence of a bad depression that nothing seemed to be improving. I had read (over and over again) the benefits of exercise as it relates to depression, but just never took it to heart. I joined a gym, hired a trainer and began. For 4 and a half of those years, I did not change my eating habits, convinced I could exercise (via walking) and weight train off what I ate. Instead, I gained weight! But it was healthy weight. Muscle. The size of my clothes did not change but my body shape and balance improved. January of this year something clicked in my head.....it's now or never! I re-committed myself (as I was getting rather haphazard with my appearances at the gym), increased the intensity of my walks/treadmill and changed my attitude toward weight training from something I "had" to do to something I "wanted" to do for myself. I joined SparkPeople in April and am now reaping the rewards of changing my diet along with my new found commitment to physical activity. I recently got to drop a clothing size because I was losing inches. Inches that were not reflected on the scale. Woo hoo! SOLD! This SparkPeople plan does work. My diet is now permanently modified. I learned a valuable lesson.

Oh, and those 4 and a half years of weight training with no weight loss? Paid off big time this weekend. Put on my (dare I say it?) TWO PIECE swimsuit and headed for some rays to grab some Vitamin D, and dear hubby says to me, "I can really tell you're losing weight. Plus you look more tone." Thank you for noticing! As the fat falls off me, my muscles are beginning to show! I want more of this! No bulky muscle for me though, I love my curves. I just want to look toned and healthy. Today's gym day (after a rather lazy weekend). Woo hoo! Onward!

Who's joining me?

Go for it. My husband was a power lifter in his 30s, but there were men and women there right beside him well into their 60s. You may never set a world record, but with careful training you just might surprise yourself - and you'll never have to think about that pesky, "I wonder how it would have turned out if I'd....."

Pray to God, but row for shore.

Back in the gym! Yea! I didn,t have the strength to do much of a work-out while I was off. I understand about the ankle , had that 4 yrs ago on other ft. I can do weights and bike ride, walking is slow, Back to squats and lunges too. Getting my books out to motivate me! Just remember everyone to stay balanced and eat clean. Cherie

That's what I trained for when I first lifted in the 1980's. I loved going for the big weights. Go for it, you'll never regret at least trying for the time it takes to prepare for a show or competition. You aren't comitting to it forever. You choose.

I'm interested in trying kettle bells, have watched a few videos demonstrating how to use them.

How are they working for you? What's the most positive change they have contributed to for you?

Hey EDWARDSC93 - You may want to consider using the down to time while recovering from ft surgery to focus on upper boddy work. You could lift weights while sitting. Keep the weights manageable (hand weights) but focus on more reps and more sets. When I broke my ankle, 3 mos non-weight bearing. When I graduated to crutches...it was my best ABS workout ever! Something to look forward to!

Net net...hang in there...don't get too down...and think of ways to keep yourself on a modified plan. You'll be back on your feet soon!

1) Can HIIT be done with weights too?

2) What about eating before or after?

3) Does it hurt if you do Core, Upper and Lower Body all the same day 3 or more days a week or is it best to break it up?

4) When is the best time to do Weight Lifting, morning or anytime?

I don't go for ache- I go for solid and good form advancement.. Do a 3 day split program so never using a group of tired muscles.. When I return to the particular day, doms is not a problem.. If I have to roll around on those rollers and crap- better option take a rest day- will get more out of muscles then thrashing dead horses..

Hi, I did about 6 wks of weight training, then I,ve switched to a higher rep but where I struggling with the last few, from station to station, then a 3-4 station cardio, rest 3 min, and do it all over again. Day 1, upper body, day 2 lower body. I do this 3 circuits. Not easy, but you,re working both! I like it. Good Luck! Cherie

Hi Robin,

Most women will not get "bulky" muscles unless they're taking testosterone, so you have nothing to fear from lifting weights.
However, it is thought that for l-o-n-g-e-r leaner muscles, lighter weights and higher repetitions is best.

Hi all! Been WT and increasing weight, except for what I lost when I sprained My ankle 4 wks ago. I,m so proud, yesterday, on my 5th set, I went from 15 to 20 pound lateral raises. Last set was only 5 reps, but I did it. Was afraid, but no assist. This month is gonna be a fat-burning month, circuits. My ankle still can,t take a lot. I love seeing muscles! Hope you are all doing well! Cherie

Just aiming to go as heavy as I can at the gym.. Just about ready to move past 100lbs front pull downs and now doing 110lbs for cable rows comfortable.. 70lbs Chest press and 110lbs dead lifts..
I find sumo squats and one legged lunges a particularly nasty nice combo for my legs.. Add 75lbs of dumbbell to the sumo squats, next day is dom city, but it works better than the leg press lol..

Being able to do the deadlifts has improved my vertical leg raises, almost hitting myself in the chops getting my legs up to my chest.. Newest addition is chest dips, my triceps burn like heck efter doing them, took me 2 years to get them a done goal..

I love my tricep pushdowns, 88lbs isn't to shabby and 40lbs cable bicep curls also do the trick.. I ain't in no hurry to advance but it has ticked a couple of other body builder women off at the gym I have improved my muscle mass so fast.. Fast I guess is what I had down since 2007 to what they have been doing most of their lifes lol..

@ Goriana-when I finally got back to it I didn't have the time or inspiration to rededicate to the gym rat routine, I looked around until I found a bootcamp(inside) for women based on weight training. We have a pretty hardcore free weight range from 7's to 50's, no pink two pound weights here! A squat rack and a b-/tri pull down/row etc...It's one hour a day and alternates super sets with cardio. Our fitness trainer keeps track of WHAT we are working out so it's brainless, one hour and I'm done...5 days a week. I run a little on the weekends so that when the "fun" runs pop up I'm good to go...I'm not usually a fitness class gal but this one is great!

I'm bumping to ST 4x/wk instead of 3.
2=Upper; 2= Lower and 4=Cardio.
(Cardio/Leg conditioning on Sabbath).....so far - so good.

Desk job makes for easy muscle wasting. Determined to avoid that.
I didn't notice it so much when only working 8hr/d....but when I upped to 10-14hr/days - I really feel the difference .... combined with menopause -- not good.

I'm so grateful for my weight room.
Everything from 1# -- 35# dumbbells and a lovely weighted vest for an additional 12-24#......
I'ts gonna be a GREAT winter. :o)

Hi Smies! Nice to see you :)

I need a little motivation myself, I have been jogging but not lifting lately.

Upping time isn't always the best way. I regularly change my routine & up the weight I lift.

Needing to remotivate myself.
Since Menopause - my muscles are shrinking - and my fat cells are expanding.
NOT GOOD.

The job requires more sit-on-my-butt time....so I have to begin focusing on upping my weight lifting time....More Muscles - more energy burned just 'being.
