What a dumb thing to say. You obviously know what you're doing and certainly don't need his help.

I cannot believe a trainer said that to you! He's obviously not doing well for himself. Perhaps this guy should try another approach...like being helpful and nice!

By the way, I'd love to be 17% BF. If I got that result I think you'd hear me scream a state away! Tell 'em to go fly a kite...just average...whatever!

I just joined my gym and although personal trainer sessions are advertised I have never been approached to sign up, neither has my husband and he has been a member for over a year. There is always a trainer in the strength circuit area to offer advice and make sure you are doing things right but they are all really nice.

I am looking forward to booking a personal trainer session in January when I have the cash, but I would not be very interested if I heard negative feedback from any of the trainers. I want constructive criticism and encouragement and that's what I have received so far.

I am glad I've found a good gym.

THEREALDINANE - Oh so true! It is a true love/hate relationship. Pretty much hate her during my assessments and while she nags me over my posture... but love my results. We are actually good friends as well. BUT, I understand where you are coming from. Great point.

GymRat - I think the more one "hates" one's trainer the better job he's doing! I say all kinds of nasty things to my trainer. He's "evil!" But I'd recommend his "torture" to anyone.

WOW...I am just amazed at such behavior and arrogance. AND NOW, I am so grateful for my "little" gym and my personal trainer that although she is blunt, straight forward and no-nonsense and sometimes referred to as a B!tch... she is nothing like what folks have described through the blogs and on the forums as bad trainers. I would be so upset and devastated.

There are some really good ones out there. WOW. Makes me grateful and thankful.

Wow, that is really an awful experience! No wonder why you dropped them.

I would complain but I haven't seen the guy there at all since the incident, which leads me to believe it didn't work out w/ him and the gym.

Have you talked to anyone about his behavior? We'll gladly listen to you vent here, but I wish I'd told my (former!!!) gym how their trainers' hard sell was not good for business. I used my two free PT training sessions at the gym thinking they'd help me learn to use the strength training machines. Instead, they tried to sell me more sessions at $110 a pop! I got one okay workout and a lot of undermining talk -- I have too much fat on my 114 pound frame, I should eat fewer carbs and try out their branded meal replacement bars, I can't do the exercises we just did because my form is awful and my posture is bad and I'll hurt myself and form bad habits. When I was sitting there listening to her talk about stuff, I was thinking "Thank goodness I have SP or I'd think this was good advice..." I did try to learn how to use the machines by going to the Y and hanging out with a friend who teaches Zumba -- spending fifteen minutes with her before her class was much more helpful than those two hours with my expensive gym's expensive trainer. Even after that, I went to the gym 20 times in five months, never integrated it into my workout schedule and dropped it this month. In those same five months, I started taking adult gymnastics lessons twice a week and I have better posture, nice looking triceps, my resting heart rate dropped to 64 and I probably have lost that "extra" fat off my frame.

I wish I'd complained because I would have said my piece, but I'm glad I'm not paying them any more of my money. Your gym needs to know that their business practices are a turn off. Even if you send them an email or write up something on Yelp, at least you'll have said something that someone over there will have to read and respond to. Gyms think that the hard sell is what motivates people to buy packages with trainers, but that sort of stupid stuff is exactly the sort of behavior that ultimately drives off customers.

At least you took him at face value and could see what he was trying to do. I really feel for the people that get pulled into his hard sell and fall for it parting with their hard earned cash to not get any benefit from it! Shame!

You look amazing by the way and if i looked like that I would have told him where to get off!

Good Morning

I have reading your messages for a year thanks for being a huge part of my life. 3weeks ago I felt a shooting pain in my right calf and continued my cardio on the elliptical bike. After 3 days I had to stop and took off a week. Monday I returned to the gym did my warm up walking and than the first step on the bike I felt a hot pain again. I dont know were to go from here. I'm still walking on the treadmill but get pain during the day. I dont want an injure to develop into a relapse.

Frustrating! I am grateful for my no-pushy gym with one trainer who is the owner! She doesn't approach unless you've approached her for advice (of which I asked that very question this morning! - unless your using heavy weights doing those sidebends, your not going to bulk up...BTW) only time she ever butts in is when someone is seriously about to hurt themselves.

Funny that you looked critically at yourself. As an athlete though, never hurts to do that every now and then, shrug it off and move on. Maybe there is some insecurity with the trainer about himself?

I wouldn't sweat it - you look fabulous.

Wow. Just. Wow. That is so stupid.

My trainer is on a kind of... rampage at my gym. He's actually gotten quite a few under-qualified "trainers" banned. That kind of thing would set his hair on fire... if he had hair... He hates people who give his profession a bad name. He tells me all the time that the best way for him to generate business is for him to do a good job with his current clients, like me. Because I will shout it from the rooftops - "Go see Ken! He's awesome! Look at what he's done for me!" He doesn't need to drum up business talking to people who are already fit.

I'm sorry you had to have that guy talk to you. I hope you don't let it bug you for too long. Clearly he's clueless.

Wow that's ridiculous I can't stand it when Gyms go up to you and try to push the PT on you. They say I will get better results with them, but in all reality they are just the average Joe most of them are not really professional trainers.

I just say sorry no money! emoticon

Nothing to be embarrassed about, people's words will always have an effect on our psyche regardless of how self-confident we are, its human nature, just long as you know the truth. I am embarassed to admit that when I got home, I did spend about 10 minutes looking at myself in the mirror VERY critically! HA!

This is the second time I have encountered the "hard sell" at my gym. The first time, they were doing body fat testing. My BF tested at 17%, which falls into "athletic" for females, but "average" for males. The trainer kept insisting I was just "average" and would need to sign up for PT if I wanted to be above average! WHATEVER!!!

For the most part, my gym is pretty low key and fortunately, the trainers are usually not this pushy.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Your reply should have been, "you dont mind sounding stupid" Seriously if a trainer takes that kind of approach and with misleading information, its a sad display of professional knowledge on his or her part. Not that you need it but I hope your gym has better informed PT's than that.

I was at the gym this morning doing part of my core workout on the Roman chair when one of the trainers approached me.

He said, "You're going to build muscle doing that but it's going to look like fat".

So, I said, "OK, thanks for the advice"

He said, "You don't care if you look fat?"

To which I said, "No one sees me naked" and put my headphones back on.

Now, I am 5'5". I weigh 110 pounds and I have a six pack. "Looking fat" is not high on my list of fitness concerns.

WHY do some trainers think an effective way to generate new business is to try to make people feel insecure??? That drives me CRAZY!!

OK, thanks for reading and letting me vent!
