Lettuce also gets bitter-tasting in the heat, doesn't it? Good thing you kept it watered so you didn't lose it!

It's still early so I'm not sure what I'll do out there today...need to turn the worm bin again and possibly harvest some worm castings.

Wow, you guys are having a lot of rain! This may be the only time I ever get to say this, but it was hot and sunny here while it was raining everywhere else. Red sails lettuce, I now know, hates warm weather--it wilted pretty pitifully. So while you all were getting wet, I was out watering! Can't believe it.

Turned the compost, too.

Hope you all dry out soon! We're back to our usually programming (wet cool weather) by the weekend.

I'm jealous of all of you who are able to plant already. I can't wait to do so. We're getting rain as well, so no outside work until it lets up. At the moment, all I can do is to weed and prepare beds for planting later (the weeds are growing quite well this year, should have a bumper crop as usual!).

Was gone for the weekend attending my SIL funeral and got back yesterday and this day I had to rest and recoup from it. It is hard on my body with lupus and the stress of losing two SIL in three weeks.

This is actually for yesterday:

I planted some brocolli, tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, radishes, beets, watermelon, cantelope and sweet peppers.

hopefully today when I am off work the rain will stop and I can plant the salad greens and a few other things!

I finished up my new herb garden area yesterday, while hubby mowed the yard. It's supposed to rain all week here now, so time to start on Spring cleaning the house.

Well it depends...it can be the temperature of my dining room, if the sun is coming in it has gone up 15 degrees, (85F) and if I put the heating pads in it will get 20 degrees warmer than the ambient temperature. I zip it up at night, when we have the heat go done and it keeps it warmer than the house temperature. All I know is everything is sprouting and enjoying it and it keeps the humidity up in there too so you don't have to water.

Sharjopaul, it must be warm where you are! Where are you? It's not bean and cucumber weather yet here in Seattle.

Nice greenhouse, golddust! How warm does it get in there?

CB, I get it. I need to put more stuff in my composter!

Mostly clean up outside today--all the winter dreck cleaned off the porch and pathway. I should weed--no time! Maybe this weekend.

Hey Monica, was are you garden ornaments?

Hope you're all getting some gorgeous weather.

Actually it was 40 gallons of compost that is finished, which is less than half the capacity of my composter. I usually empty it 2 or 3 times a year. In the fall I put in all the leftover pumpkin shells after halloween as well as the plants that were in my flower pots and the ones in my garden and flower beds that get cut back. And I keep adding more scraps throughout the winter (fortunately all the stuff added in the fall usually does settle down somewhat). Lots of peelings, egg shells, corncobs and husks, the ashes from our outdoor firepit, you name it. In the fall, I also will sometimes put the old used up potting soil from my hanging baskets in there if there is room.

I AM TRANSPLANTING TO LARGER POTS AND DOING THAT TASK OUTSIDE BUT YES IT IS TOO COLD TO PUT ANYTHING OUT YET...30F THIS MORNING.

I AM LOOKING AT THE INDIGO ROSE TOMATO AS A NEW ONE THIS YEAR. Almost finished putting fresh cedar chips on my "cedar patio". My son chipped 2 big piles for me and I'm trying to get it all spread before all the weeds come up. It's about the only place we can sit in the summer and not have bugs crawling around. Even the flying ones steer clear of it. I've been trying to get at least 3 wheelbarrows a day spread around. Any more and I just wear out. Have to save some energy for other places in the garden. Rain stopped me today!

Emptied the compost bin and sifted it. 40 gallons of finished compost spread on one flower bed and 45 gallons of unfinished compost back in the bin. 4 hours of work.
Then another hour or more pulling creeping charlie and other weeds out of a bed. Had to stop before I finished due to rain.
Ground is drying out well, so hopefully I can get that dug this week - if it doesn't rain too much.

We only have 30 acres now. I grew up on over 100 but my family had 1500.

That's still just 'family farm' level. I have other family with more but most have chopped theirs down and moved on. Hard life.

It's an invasive species, so new to my region. No natural predators. I forget the name but found it last year after several years of traditional remedies like yours. We still have garlic growing around it. Last year, I Blended a spray to use of hot peppers soap and orange oils and coated everything (have to do it everyday.

Nothing. We've used the store bought organically too, thinking maybe it's more targeted. No.

What I read last year is if there's any hope--as I shared previously:

Let the trees die. Do not replant for a few years.

You're hoping the insects will die of starvation at the loss of your trees. Or they move on, something.

Destroying yours can do the same thing but we only have the one peach tree and I'd hoped it would weather this infestation. They come back:(

Lily, sorry to hear about your peach tree! Any idea what is attacking it?
I underplanted mine with garlic chives, garlic, and lots of herbs. No idea if it works, but the idea is that the strong scent throws off insects that would like to prey on the tree, so they never find it. So far so good! Maybe if you start over you could try it. They aren't very long-lived trees, anyways.

Today I took over a bit more the planting strip with lavender, pineapple sage, and thyme. It's slow going because the soil is compacted clay and needs lots of amendment, but bit by bit it's becoming a garden.

I have lots of tomatoes under lights in the basement. Outside in a tiny mini-greenhouse I have basil, sorrel, marigolds, and more tomatoes. Started more tomatoes and basil today. The potting soil is an incredible deal at Costco, and I had the extra seeds, so I decided just to plant away, and I can give away the surplus.
Tomorrow: lettuces outdoors, and squash indoors.

Rain hard most of the day and now is too wet.

If you tell God no because He won't explain the reason He wants you to do something, you are actually hindering His blessing. I planted lots of seeds. It's still 6 weeks until the last frost.

Still too wet to plant, but I did rake all the leaves off the strawberry bed.

We planted a to row of radishes, a row of spinach.

The earlier spinach is barely peeking up and the romaine planted that same day is about twice the size of that early spinach.

Also, my peach tree is HORRIBLY under attack. I know this is organic gardening but so far no traditional methods have worked. This is some invasive species that we never dealt with til about 5 years ago. Today, I tried conventional pesticide and it didn't even faze them--however, I immediately felt stinging and ran in to shower. I guess the tree will just die and then they'll eventually go away. :(
