I use organic garden tone. I get it at Home Depot and the Military BX

For my veggie garden, after fall clean up I put on some bone meal, blood meal and some wood ash, then top that with shredded leaves. In the spring I then apply compost and turn it all in. The soil remains wonderfully loose and productive..

I use the same things in my perennial beds but do not turn it in in the spring.

I use composted vegetable scraps and leaves to fertilize my garden. You can always check to see if there are any stables nearby and get some aged manure there, which I've done in the past. Makes excellent fertilizer and the aged manure is usually loaded with earthworms. You can also check if there is a Starbucks or other place nearby that serves lots of coffee, and see if they will save the grounds for you (offer to provide them with some large buckets - 5 gallon ones if you have them - and pick up daily).

My town also offers branch chipping (for a fee) and then offers the resulting compost up free for the taking. Since there are lots of leaves along with the branches, it does make excellent mulch for gardens and flower beds too. The wood chips will break down eventually, and if you work them in to the soil, they help loosen it up. But even spreading it as is after your plants come up will help as the compost washes down into the soil when it rains, and then you just dig everything in once you are done in the Fall (for perennial flower beds and bushes, you just leave it and add new on top of the old the following year). It also helps to cut down on weeds. So you can check and see if they do that where you live as well.

I use a mix of composted manure and my yard compost. The ratio I use depends on what I grew in a particular spot last year, and what I plan to grow this year.

I have gardened for years but am trying to go completely organic now. I do have some compost that will be ready but may need something more to fertilize. Looking for ideas. of what others use.
