My stop binge date was Nov 27 (I think?), I remember always adding 3 days to the date in Dec to calculate, but Friday just seems like a weird day for me. Or maybe it was Dec 3, and I subtracted 3 days - Dec 3 is when I had the body composition test done, so that might be right (I think it's also when I finally went off my meds). Regardless, it's been sense then, so a really long time for me! I'm on a roll. AND when I was home for the holidays, I didn't eat ANY foods I'm allergic to!! Normally I'll have some cheese, or some bread, or some chocolate, but nope, I stayed away from ALL of it. Pretty much, I'm in a good spot right now. My flatmate even told me it looks like I have lost some weight, but we'll see. I weighed around 185 on Dec 3, and on Dec 20, I was about 181, so pretty nifty. Now I ate more than what I was use to at home and didn't workout as much, but I don't think I necessarily OVER ate too much. I also didn't workout as much as what I was use to (only 3 days a week compared to 7! And it was mainly ST and not cardio). So I'm really tempted to weigh myself right now, but I'm waiting until Feb 1st. I need to wait because I CANNOT become obsessed with the scale again right now. I just need to hold it out and not do it. So 19 more days and I'll know! I'm really excited though. Maybe because I haven't been eating as much either, I'm just not hungry. AND my banana "pancake" with honey for breakfast is WAY too sweet for me! Maybe I'll cut the honey out. I'm surprised! Before I went home, I would guzzle honey from the jar, I can't even think about doing that right now. Realistically, I know I should be eating more than what I currently am though. I'm just not all that hungry. Now back to studying for a few hours, then it'll be wine time! (maybe I should go back to limiting the amount of wine I drink too... especially with the new hype with all the guidelines? It's not like I get drunk or anything, I don't even get tipsy, but... it's just a part of my family's routine. Drink wine with every meal. Between my parents and I, we would go through 3-4 bottles of wine a night! It's just what we do!)

Ok, that's a bit long, but it's my current update. I'm definitely looking forward to Feb 1!

Rachel

Rachel - Just for you... a few things that have helped me with the picking. It's very insidious and hard to break. But I've said to myself, today I'll allow myself 3 picks a day. Now that has to mean something very brief and yes it can make the thing worse... but it can also keep me from "binge" picking. Another trick is I allow myself to "feel" it as much as I want - rub my finger over it to check it. None of these things are "normal", but if I just try to stop cold turkey, that doesn't work either. I also use another board I'm on to commit to my 3 picks a day or to "stop for an hour". But it's too embarrassing for me even to do on our hour commitment board and on the other board I disguise the word. Again, a public commitment helps me, an hour or a few hours at a time. I feel for you.... I think it's the worst bad habit I have. I have to say though, that I have gotten better over the last year or so.

Oh, just thought of something else.... I try never to do my allotted 3 picks with my fingers, but with a sterilized needle. I find I can do damage with the needle, but I'm not doing all the "squeezing" and bruising stuff. Sometimes having to go find a sterilized sewing needle, or sterilizing one I'm not sure about is just too much work and enough to stop me. Often I don't even do the 3 picks a day allowed.

Day 7
Oolala, I guess I grew up with this kind of cold in the winters and come to expect it. we dress in layers for the weather and when outside do not feel the cold too much. The cows seem to adapt. They eat more, grow more hair, and seek shelter from the wind. We also have a heated water source for them. we have to plug our vehicles in so they will start. We have snow plows that keep the roads drivable. I drive about 6 miles into work (one mile gravel and the rest paved). I don't mind you asking. I live on the prairies in Canada. I would have a hard time surviving in the heat you get!

Bingeing today and struggling to stop. I know why though. I ended up having a big drink yesterday. Wine followed by vodka. Days after drinking always make me crave food - any food.

Did not binge yesterday but the chips are gone. I ate them in a reasonable way, now I feel better. My knee is still hurting but I have come to grips with the fact that I can't take my long walks. I am taking one mini walk every other day and doing chair exercises. I am also still doing my strength training exercises for my arms 3x a week.

Lyla, thatís amazing about your faster time running this year. Tell THAT to your doctor! I donít think it can just be the temperature, although I canít imagine pressing myself to run in those conditions. East Coasters are tough! (But the ones I knew when I lived in MA were spooked by the earthquakes we take for granted.)

Interesting strategy, Kathryn, but as good a reason as any to include chips, fried chicken, and hash browns in the overall plan. You might find out they donít do it for ya or could be just the ticket. But I hope your knee heals soon. That joint is so crucial to so much movement!

Jan, kudos on day 1! ALWAYS a real victory. Itís almost part of the definition of bingeing that people do it in secret. Or thatís part of what makes it a disorder. I asked a friend once if she would be willing to hang out with me during a binge on the advice of something I read. She would not. I wouldnít ask anyone else, and itís a small issue to me now. For me, when Iím with others, itís not just the witnessing but that I feel that being with others meets some desire that I replace with food other times, even if the company isnít ideal. Itís afterwards that I had to get a handle on, but that was mostly habit. And as I implied in my blog, yes, absolutely, there is something we could call the addictive voice, though I prefer the strong habit voice. Quirky, I know.

Rachel, I envy your being able to sleep so much on your return. In summer of 2001, I spent nearly six weeks in Bali, on the other side of the International Dateline. I was up nearly all night and tired nearly all day for more than a week after I returned, even after the new school year started. But Bali was worth it. Regarding the bandaid, why couldnít you put a little one on your ďhot spotĒ? Either way, ďitís" going to be visible, no? I wish I could lighten the study grind for you, though I bet there are times itís interesting. Itís just the pace you have to go at that can be a drag.

Tawney, I totally agree that rest or sleep is better than bingeing. I typically donít get anything more productive done when I permasnack/eat compulsively anyway. Now I believe sleep is even better than being online or watching TV, two other diversions I often use, giving me more options, though I donít use rest as much as would probably be smart! I know itís old news that I am wowed by the temps in your Ďhood, but -30! I know youíve told me but please remind me if itís latitude or altitude or both that accounts for such cold. I would think even cows would have trouble with it. I just saw a program on which they said that some wild bison succumb to cold every winter. And how far do you commute to work? Hope Iím not being too nosy.

I think I may have already said that I experimented this week with different macronutrient ratios. I started to feel it was oppressive by the end of the week, so let it go yesterday. I really enjoyed the meals, and had thought it might make me decide to return to my regular guidelines, but find today that Iím feeling fine with continuing with last weekís options for another week until my sister comes to visit next weekend. I like feeling that Iím not dependent on anything except eating windows and one-plate meals on weekdays. I like finding out that more options are also satisfying or that even If the meal is less than ideal, I donít have to use that as an excuse to entertain a lot of thoughts to have something else. It rarely ends with just a bite or two of anything else anyway, a sign to me that food is not the answer, so might as well not start.

Hi Tawney, this is something I find really great about this team, you can be completely honest and people don't judge. That really will help me because no one knows how bad I binge, not even my husband and it is so relieving to finally be able to talk about it emoticon

Day 6
I had a couple of naps yesterday and then went to bed before 9. I hope to have more energy today. In the past I may have binged but this is a much better way to handle the aftermath of Christmas, poor sleeps last week, husband in a rough stretch, and retirement decisions. I quite often get the January "blahs" but seem to be OK with that this year. Also I have a new grandchild coming in a few weeks and there were some problems with the first.
Today is going to be a great day - It is -30 C here and with the wind chill it feels like -36C. Maybe I will finally get the Christmas stuff organized and away and do inside tasks where it is warm. I am glad we did bales for the cows yesterday so I just have to feed pails today.
Welcome to those who have joined. This is a wonderful supportive place to be. Don't be afraid to tell the truth - I resisted many times but you know what? telling the truth helps you get better so much faster.

Hi everyone,

'Day one completed, yay!

Oolala, thanks for the link, I will go and read it in a minute

Lyla - Well done on your 10k, that is a great achievement

Kathyrn - That is a great plan to help with the bingeing. I am realising that if I incorporate the things I binge on in a plan it will be easier to control

I am feelking positive today because it is Sunday and I have all the family around me. I don't tend to beinge when I am in company because I feel embarrassed by it

Day 10 got a plan.....Knee hurting has kept me from taking my daily walks that I enjoy so much. I talked to my therapist yesterday and we came to an understanding that I was going to eat some comfort foods to make me feel better. I bought a huge bag of potato chips that in the past I would have binged on, but did not yesterday. I portioned out, in a bowl, 2 oz of chips twice, once for afternoon snack and than again in place of dinner. Tonight I am making fried chicken and hash browns, more comfort food that I won't binge on.

Day 4

Yeah I am trying not to stress out about the bp thing too much but it's all I can think about (which is completely counterproductive, I know I really need to try to relax). I'm trying to think about it the same way I approached the gallbladder surgery, as a "challenge" rather than a setback, and work as hard as I can to do whatever needs to be done to fix it or make it better.

Had a 10k race today and crushed my PR for that distance by 0:55/mile (so 6 min total)! And I beat my time for this exact same race last year by over FIFTEEN MINUTES!*

(Although last year at this exact same race, it was so cold that I ran the race wearing a full-on coat, and the water they were handing out had not only frozen in the paper cups, it had actually frozen to the tables, and when it finally melted enough to take a few sips, some of it spilled on my coat and froze instantly! So a 31 degree temperature increase prolly helped my time quite a bit.)

Living the dream.

Lyla, it could just be a fluke - but don't worry about it too much because you don't want to be stressed when they take it again! Stress will cause it be elevated! I also hate when Drs tell you to just exercise more, it's like I already work out anywhere from 30 min - 2 hours a day, what else do you want?!

Oolala, as far as the cholesterol, mine is also really high - they considered putting me on statins when I was 23, but that didn't happen. It's all genetics for me :/

I've ben doing really well with the eating, but it's going to be interesting now that I'm back in the UK. I'm adjusting to the time change horribly. I left Wednesday and slept the entire time on the plane (6pm-1am/6 am with time change). Slept in the terminal for an hour. Slept on the next plane (another hour). Got home and was in bed around 6pm (what would feel like 1pm). I slept straight until 11am the next day! That's 17 hours of sleep! So I think I'm all good. I went to bed around 10pm last night and woke up at noon the next day! That's 14 hours of sleep! I was going to do the 9am park run this morning as well! I'm so tired still though, I was expecting it to be around 10am when I woke up. I'll have to set an alarm tomorrow morning, I've never slept so much before!

I know it's been discussed before, the dreaded picking, but mine is getting out of hand again. I had a cystic zit on the side of my face/hairline that has become a spot for me. I've been attacking it non stop for a few days and now it's really infected (the redness is about 1 inch from my eye). I'm really annoyed with myself as I thought I had gotten over this. I hate that it's in such a visible spot and that I'm picking mindlessly - it makes it harder to stop and just say no. I can't put a bandaid on it like I use to do since it's on my face.

Time to hit the gym and start studying. Yuck. 8 more months. Just 8 more. Ugh.

Rachel

Hi team, today is day one for me.

Thanks for the advice Oolala. You are so right I am not going to try and do any big, restrictive diet, I have learnt through experience that that only makes things worse. I read somewhere that we have an 'addictive voice' and this voice will give us every excuse under the roof to indulge our addiction. And this voice is very manipulative, it will do anything to convince you that it is right. If when you find yourself thinking these thoughts you can identify it as your addictive voice then you can start to control it and not listen to it. I am going to try and do this because I will give myself all kinds of reasons why it is okay to indulge. I hope this makes sense!

Have a great weekend emoticon

Good going, Sunny!

Lyla, that is annoying. You are doing so many things right! You get so much exercise. My blood pressure has gone up since I lost weight, not in any danger area, but still perplexing. My cholesterol has, too. They are still not bad, but dang! If nothing changes after I incorporate more exercise, I'm going to ask my doctor for a consult with a dietician. My fear is that it's salt. I've already given up having sweets very often. It's not really a problem anymore, but it's partly because I like my other food so much. I know I also eat less salt than the average bear, but it may still be too much. I would miss it...

Belated kudos to DLP. Good luck with day 2 tomorrow, Tawney. Kathryn, you're already more than a week in. Jac, I sent you a note separately. Kathryn, hope the knee heals soon.

Jolie, good to hear from you! Wise words.

Ending day 5 BF.

Day 3

[rant]Uuuuggggghhhhh had a routine checkup this morning and bp was through the damn roof, which has never been an issue for me, even at 300+++ lbs., and here I am down 100++ lbs, working out like a maniac, generally not bingeing, and out of nowhere (seemingly), this. So I'm supposed to go back in a week to see if it was just a fluke but I'm so, like, outraged, I can't understand it and I'm so frustrated, I feel like why even bother going to the gym and trying to eat sanely if my health has actually gotten worse instead of better. I guess it could be age or who knows, but last time I was at the doctor was April and it was fine so I dunno how much difference 8 or 9 months (can't do the math) would make.

All I can think is that it's all these extra shifts and the sleep deprivation and the stress from that, I guess it will be ironic as heck if I have to spend all my OT money on blood pressure medicine and doctor visits and tests and crap.

I realize zillions of people have hypertension and manage it and there are a zillion worse diseases/ailments to have, etc., but I am: (1) really inexplicably ticked off; and (2) feeling like it's some kind of personal moral failure even though I know, logically, it isn't.

Also I KNOW that my doctor is going to tell me that I need to get more exercise because that's what you tell people with high blood pressure but dear lord I cannot possibly, under any circumstances, get any more exercise without like, quitting my damn job and getting bionic legs.[/rant]

Living the dream.

JOL1KEY2BOL3, thanks for the Uplift. I define overeating is eating a meal and not stopping when I am not hungry.

A binge is that part where I walk buy grab a few crackers- Ritz, and the next thing I know I have eaten 2 sleeves of them, a 12 oz glass of milk and a sleeve of Graham crackers. I had to stop- so I just went to bed and slept for a couple of hours.

In retrospect, I should have taken a nap , I find that when I am tired ( which is frequent due to chronic fatigue), I should just check out. I would have been better off and more satisfied to make myself a sandwich and eat an apple.

But today is a new day and I am going to try again.
No One in the World can make me overeat!

IAMSUNNY -- Just start over; we have all done it many times. Just a few notes from what I've learned: (1) Be sure you're biting off just a "small change" to start with. Try to get 21 days of no "real binging".. Don't try to "not overeat" as well. That's a secondary goal which will come later. I don't know what you're calling a binge, but overeating is not a binge. (2) If your mind is daunted by 21 days, try for 4. I do that for lots of habit changing. I can do anything for 4 days that I might not be able to do for 21 days. But again make the goal for 4 days something easy and then do it. I will often still do that to cut out sugar. I know I will not cut out sugar "forever", but I can do it for 4 days... and then I can eat a chocolate cake after 4 days if I want. But I never do. Telling myself the restriction is not forever helps though. I use the techniques from The Four Day Win by Martha Beck (3) Everyone on here has many days of being binge free, but they have all binged from time to time. I accept that it may ("will") still happen and that it isn't the end of the world. (4) There is an hour commitment thread which helps me immensely. Sometimes I'm the only one who uses it; but I always say I do better keeping a public commitment that one to myself.

Anyway, hang in there!

Jacs8Jan - Welcome!

Hi, I was here about 3 years ago but sadly food won then and I gave up for a while. Unfortunately this means I am even heavier now than back then and 70 pounds heavier than my pre children weight. So I am here again and determined to finish this year at least out of the obese range and binge free if nothing else

As is my habit because I knew I was re joining Spark I have already messed up today so I will be starting tomorrow

Day 2

Uhhhggghhh scabs all over my back from that stupid idiotic duct tape. Also one of my boss' colleagues who was like, a super role model, and genuine hero type in my realm, passed away, and even though she was, you know, old, and lived a full life, and accomplished all kinds of greatness, it is a huge bummer.

I know it's been about 41 days, so that's like what, streak 2, day 20? Pretty nifty.

I'm at London Heathrow right now. Slept on the plane here, but my plane to Leeds doesn't leave until 1, so I have 4 hours to kill before I head to my gate. I'm so tired. I'm glad I slept on the plane here, but I'm exhausted. I'm excited to get back into my routine of eating smaller portions, less rich food, and working out on a more regular basis. I was doing my strength training on Tuesday and felt a nerve (or something) in my shoulder do something weird. I couldn't do the back track or the shoulder track due to the pain. Luckily, we have a family friend who is a great massage therapist - he said I jacked up my rotators. So he worked on them and loosened up all my other tight muscles. They still hurt right now - I suppose it's time for more ibuprofen!

So it's back to being more sensible and hopefully losing weight. I'm not weighing myself until February, so I hope to see good results.

Rachel

Meh I don't want to start on Day 2 so Day 1.

After I managed to survive Monday, I did another double yesterday. I am at the point where I semi-seriously think they might be trying to kill me, or at least get me to cry. All morning yesterday I was practicing, "If they ask you to stay late, just say you're sick [which is true - I am so sick]," and then when the inevitable call came...

But I'm actually getting out of here on time today (if they don't call me within the next 15 minutes), and I'm going to go home and eat dinner and sleep the sleep of the dead, hopefully not literally.

Living the dream.

Didn't quite make it yesterday emoticon , let kids get to me, and to be quite honest, I let ME get to me. I am trying very hard not to be discouraged and to see where I went wrong so that I can do better today. I've added some additional protein into my diet today and am staying on top of my water. I have some nice crunchy and sweet carrots and bell peppers if I feel like a snack during the day. I will try to remember that I deserve a break and it is OK to sit down and read my book or try this new coloring fad. Tomorrow is my weigh-in and I know it will not be pretty but it is a New Year and a new starting point.

Hi Tawney - Glad you had a good sleep. When I first retired, there was a lot of relief, but also some aimlessness and uncertainty. You may be starting to have some of that. You will love it though. Now I don't know how I ever worked all those long hours!

================
**Finished Day #2**Working on Day #3 Binge Free!

Busy all day with people in my house, who came late. Just didn't get much done on my habits. Will do today. Trying to reap the benefits of all my habits, but not be too hard on myself either. There is never a happy medium for us - in food or with anything!
