I confess--in my 10 years of membership in Sparkpeople I've never understood or joined a Team Goal before. Today I spent some time reading up on them and concluded, "What fun!" They contribute to a Team spirit and also give you some quick Sparkpoints for taking but a few seconds to check off, after having done something that's good for you. I revamped our Team Goals and added two that can help make your reading more rewarding--a goal to add to Books Read in_____ ____, which involves taking a few minutes to digest your book and think about how much you liked it and why, and also a goal where you can get a Sparkpoint for reading an author who's new to you, thus expanding your world of Books horizons.

Paperbackswap is great! I used it for years when my daughter was small for her books both for school (we homeschooled) and for her pleasure reading. And also some for my own books too. I got out of the habit after my daughter grew up though. Have fun with it!

I joined paperback swap which gives credit for swapping books though you pay the postage to ship them. I used to use another site which had you pay to receive but it went out of business.

We also have a nonprofit that takes book donations. Mostly I try to give them to others to read.

Today one of my staff was concerned that she got sauce on a book I lent her. She was going to replace it. I told her to get a different book instead. Much better.

I cut the cable last year because I have an old analogue TV and cable quit broadcasting in that format--it was either buy a new TV or buy or rent a cable box, and I didn't watch enough TV for it to be worth the extra $$$. But then I'm not a sports fan.
What to do with once-read books--that is a good question that explains why I love my Kindle and library. Donating to the library still seems like the best option--just think of all the happiness that people (like you, when you are a customer!) experience when they pick up a beautiful, like-new book for a song at a library sale. Life gives us few enough opportunities to spread joy so easily.
Of course, you could always lend your lovely books to your friends and then you know you will never see them again.

We finally "cut the cable" so I guess I will be reading more. DirecTV was up to $180/month for our family; we decided television isn't worth $6 per day. We bought an OTA antenna and will sign up for Netflix. I will miss watching the Tigers lose 5 out of every 7 games though.

I went to a local library used book sale today. They had a "Fill a paper bag for $10" deal. I filled a paper bag easily. Five aisles of adult fiction in Hardcover and Paperback all completely unsorted! I could have spent two hours in there, but my sister and nieces were with me so I spent about 20 minutes and only filled one bag this time. They will have other sales, next time I may go alone so I can fill thee bags!!!

Now a good question I have is what to do with all the books I have that I've already read? Most are in very good condition. I could donate them back to the library but to see them sold so cheaply breaks my heart when I consider what I pay for books. I guess that is better than *ack* throwing them away (which I would never do). I have 4 or 5 bankers boxes full that I need to figure out what to do with. I tried a garage sale but people who go to those generally are not readers, I sold almost none. Any other ideas?

Are all you readers familiar with Internet Archive? It is an online lending library consisting of books discarded by libraries which get donated and uploaded to that site. I get almost all the books that I read from there. You can check out their books for two weeks by setting up an account and download the book into it. Because the books are discards, they are usually a few years old, but a lot of hard to find books can be found there...for FREE!

Well, I did it. I completed all 50 categories of the Popsugar Reading Challenge. I don't know why I keep doing that--it always involves reading a lot of lousy books in categories in which I have absolutely no interest. I guess that's why they call it a "challenge."

I am reading the Jean Auel Clan of the Cave Bear books. I have them on my shelf and just decided they would fit some of the challenges on Goodreads Popsugar challenge. I had read the first two years ago and now on the third book. I did start with book one. emoticon

In the high teens today and then it will get cold again.

I'm doing the Goodreads Challenge as well. Find it interesting to see what my reading habits are through out the year.

Glad you found the bonus spins. I got a 3 today.

Hope everyone is surviving these cold fronts. Here in Phoenix it has been unseasonable warm. It is like we haven't had any winter.

I always do the Goodreads Reading Challenge, and it is so much fun to read the end-of-the-year summary.
I have spent close to a week trying to track down the Team Bonus Points. I know I could have messaged one of you and asked, but I love a challenge and am worse than most men when it comes to saying, "I give up; I'll ask!" It was harder than I thought because my search took me through so many myriads of posts complaining about their disappearance--finally I found them and earned the Team 1 point today. SparkAmerica Affinity Bonus Points indeed! emoticon

Been feeling better and am trying to again join the living. I posted a new topic for Books Read in January 2018 so members can share their reading with others in one convenient spot. I did not start any new challenges since I seemed to be the only one who enjoyed them, but if anyone is interested in a Challenge, please let me know. Happy New Year! emoticon

So in another more active group I asked as well and it was suggested that I contact publishers. I did and they said they are not aware of another book. I'm pretty bummed because I really enjoyed the two of the "series". I'll keep a watch out for a third book.

I believe in you.

Hello, I have a question. I just finished a book.which is second in a series but it doesn't appear that there is a third yet. I've tried searching online and just reached out to publishers to see when third will be released (if there will be one). Any other suggestions to research this? The book doesn't say there will be another but I can see where there should be. Maybe I'm just hopeful. Thanks for any ideas.

We finally had a freeze in W. Michigan last night so the ragweed should be on a major decline. That is great news for allergy sufferers, like me who live next to a 10 acre ragweed field. Pollens have been declining anyway and my hay fever is much better than it was, I should be getting more active as my respiratory clears up in the next couple weeks.

I'm glad you are ok from the storm too.

These days even our large library system in Phoenix is in need of the extra money raised by these sales. And these are not just library books at these sales. Lots of people donate their gently read books to help the cause. I met a woman at one sale who had donated 3 big bankers boxes of books and was looking for new ones.

I know I am looking forward to the next sale this fall.

Thanks to BTRFLYDOG and to everyone else who patronizes library book sales. Many small libraries depend heavily on those sales for money to purchase new materials. Plus, the bargains are great!

BTR: emoticon I joined Goodreads a while ago and am STILL trying to figure the site out! The cool thing is that I was able to create a quiz. :-)

I adore library book sales! I'm a page-bender with books I own that I really want to remember what is on that page. Otherwise, I use bookmarks to keep track of where I am.

HAN: emoticon One of the favorite things I did last year was to make Christmas bookmarks out of Christmas cards. Really enjoyed reading a Christmas story during the Season using the bookmarks. :-)

I use bookmarks. I have a bunch, mostly cheap paper ones, but they're fun to rotate. The other day I even found one of a baseball player I'd had a crush on in the early 2000s! My favorite one was a gift from a friend, since deceased, of scenes of her hometown. Her local historical society sold them as a fundraiser.

Right now I am reading a book I bought at the last library book sale. Books there are in great condition and very reasonably priced ( $1 paperbacks, $2 hardcover). But who ever had the book before me was a page bender. Do you bend the corner of the page to mark your place or do you use a bookmark? I used to bend the pages when I was younger, but now I wouldn't dream of it.

I joined in December of 2014, and use it only to keep track of what I am reading, though I have reviewed a couple of books. I like taking the challenge to read x number of books in a year. I started on there because of this team.

That's great! I just joined Good Reads a couple of months ago. Really haven't reviewed anything. Just using it to keep track of how many books I read. I really want to make it 24 books a year.

Just got an email notifying me that I have entered the ranks of Goodreads' Top 1% of Reviewers! Of course considering how many members Goodreads has that makes me part of the ranks of about a few hundred thousand or so.

Yes, the right to read aloud needs an amendment to include "as long as it does not disturb other readers."

Leona, glad to hear you like Of Moths and Butterflies. I have it on my kindle and may start that one next.

Happy Easter everyone! Hope yours is blessed. emoticon

Denying one's Right Not To Finish and Right to Skip would also constitute Cruel and Unusual Punishment. I can do without the Right Not To Read and The Right to Read Aloud, especially if that right is being practiced by someone else while I am trying to read my own thing!

I like the one "not to finish". I just skimmed through a book because of too much in the bedroom and then began Of Moths and Butterflies by V.R. Christensen that was the same time era and so well done.

I hope to get on here more.

Glad to know I am not the only one who goes through non-reading spells. It happens, sometimes the real world just takes precedence. I don't let it worry me to much. Sooner or later I will get drawn back into an excellent story.

Sometimes I get tired of reading. Which makes me think I'm reading too much.

I found an old cookbook somewhere (yard sale?). I love it. Very basic, home cooking. Fanny Mae? It's got really weird stuff in it, too. Like how to cook pigs knuckles and such.

Wow, it is usually in the summer time when I lose interest in reading, but now, I have lost interest in reading in February. I just wanted to stop by and say Hi, because I'm interested in reading cookbooks and finding some old recipes to use.

Best to you all, for soon I hope to be back reading.

Having no kids and grandkids, I took the initiative to ask the adult relatives that I usually buy for if it would be okay if we skip the gifts and just enjoy the peace and beauty and love of Christmas, and the answer was "YES!" so my shopping became way less time-consuming and stressful this year. I still give out anonymous gift cards ahead of Christmas to people I know are having financial troubles so they can get gifts for their kids, and also send packages to troops serving overseas, much more fun than buying gifts for people who don't need anything when I'm not even sure the gift is something they want or can use.

Nothing store bought - more time to do all that needs to be done and spend with family would be nice.

How about you?

So, what are you asking Santa for this year?

Thanks Elisadenk - I'm just glad I'm mostly done with Christmas shopping. With all of this going on I would not be in the mood to do it now.

On a happier note my best friend's son is getting married on the 22nd! Gotta take bad with the good.

Sounds lovely Elisadenk - I love when communities do something together like that.

Having trouble hanging on to my Christmas spirit. Family and friends are getting such bad news. My boyfriends stepmother is suffering from Alzheimer's and will most likely need to be put into a care facility in the coming year. Her daughter has been receiving chemo for liver cancer and found out that the tumor has grown. She is starting a very aggressive treatment this week. Then to cap it all off we heard a family friend's son had a massive heart attack and died yesterday. Please pray for these people and I will pray that all my SparkFriends are safe and sound through this holiday season.

I googled up Glendale Glitters. Yeouser!!

In the next town over, there's a street they 'decorate'. Each house can be done up differently. They block of the street for pedestrians only. Totally cool!

We went to Glendale Glitters yesterday. For those of you not from the Phoenix area Old Towne Glendale decorates the square with millions of lights and trees and decorations. They have an amphitheater and had local dance schools performing and in another section a live band and vendors everywhere selling all kinds of Christmas stuff, and had some rides set up for the kids. The best part is there no admission to get in. You have to pay for the rides and food, but if you just want to walk around and watch the entertainment(and people watch) it is free.

Glad to see everybody survived Thanksgiving pretty much unscathed, except for Nola, so please get well soon to enjoy the Christmas festivities and finish that booktree so you can post a picture as your gift to us. What a gorgeous Avatar!
Such a great picture, Kay, that is one that I would run off and frame a bunch of copies and give to everybody as a stocking-stuffer.
Wow, Noreen, just keep on doin' what you're doin'! Christmas can be so stressful for working folks, so please take good care of yourself.
Wishing everybody a great pre-Christmas season, and please remember to enjoy and not overdo! Make sure to allow time to smell the bayberry and open up some great Christmas story books.
And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One, Gentle Readers!

Glad you are feeling better Grndmom43! Will be interested in hearing how you decided to decorate your book tree- or maybe even post a picture of it.

Have a great Friday all. emoticon

I am finally well enough from my cold to venture out of my apartment. I took a short walk to the store up the street and inhaled some fresh air. I cleaned my living room and vacuumed this afternoon and my laundry is separated for tomorrow. I won a box set of ebooks and a swag pack that I will receive from an author this month. I have lots reading to do!
I am making one of the book Christmas trees and am almost finished but not sure how it should be decorated. emoticon

Great picture Simple Life - looks like a good time was had by all.

I have had two very hectic days at work. I am hoping for a calmer day tomorrow.

Happy December 1st everyone!

We celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday with my brothers, SIL and mother. The food was good and I think everyone had a nice time.

Had a great Thanksgiving. Everything turned out good and somehow I lost half a pound! emoticon I didn't overdo as much as I once would have - but I did have some of everything including wine and pie. Will have to thank my gym for being open on the holiday. I think the 45 minutes on the stair stepper really help.

Happy Tuesday!
I went to aerobics class this morning and I'm going to ballroom dancing class this afternoon. My legs are already tired. We have a new dance instructor today. It will be interesting to see how the class is run with the new instructor. I'm looking forward to that.
