I have decided that I can keep two lists ... Ones that I only have see in the wild free, and another one for birds seen at zoos or other captured locatins.
My new little issue is that I now live in BC the west and I am from the "east" Ontario where their are different species. I know I have seen many birds and have kept little lists in the past but are long lost. I am adding some of the birds I know beyond a doubt that I have seen -'can't add dates or locatins though.

I personally only check off birds I see in the wild. However your trip sounds like a once in a life time adventure. I hope you had fun :)

I hope I did the right thing - I paid my money and sent away for the starter kit to join backyard feeder watch. It sounds like something I would enjoy.

Question... To include a bird on your life list does it have to be free and in the natural field?
Or can I include captured birds?
I know on the trip to Indonesia I can and most likely visit a bird market and they catch wild birds to sell - not so ethical. But that is what they do ... So can I clain sighting them on my list??

Out the door I went with with my camera that was placed inside a zip locked bag inside the camera case inside a dry bag. Dalhouise and I had our rain coats,on and down the trail we went at the Squamish estuary. Met two joggers - no other hikers out so it was peaceful with only the sound of pouring rain ringing in my ears.
I stopped to watch some Bufflehead Ducks and Harbour seals swim in the Squamish River, as well as some Mallard ducks and Canadian Geese. I didn't take the camera out of its sealed bags as it was just pouring down

On the way home a bald eagle flew in front of my car at the bridge over the Mamquam River on Government Road.

I went to the store yesterday and last night I placed a suit cake out a seed cake and filled one feeder with a mix of seeds and of course sunflower seeds on the balcony floor.
The stellar jays are certainly making their presence known. Lucky for me the towhee and juncos and chickadees get a chance to come and have a meal too

Hello group - I have been away working for the last six months so haven't had much time to post - but now I am back.
The last three days I have been walking the dog looking for birds.
Today I was able to take pictures of a perched Red Tailed Hawk in a tree, a Great Blue Heron flew by as I was observing the hawk. Lots of Mallard ducks and Canadian Geese swimming in the tidal pools.
Lots of smaller birds that I don't know fluttering in the lower branches of a bush.
Yesterday I was able to see a couple of Bald Eagles and a Harbour Seal.
Then to top it off when I came home I had a flicker and a Stealar Jay stop on the balcony looking for the feeder that is not yet up... I guess I will do this tomorrow.

Haven't seen anything new in the way of birds, but migrating will be happening soon so hope to see some of those birds.

Tomorrow I am going on my first Bird Walk. It starts at 9am, and we need to leave at between 8 and 8:30. Sounds easy, but my husband is usually getting up at 9:00am, going on the bike for 45 minutes, and then having breakfast with me. So if we can change all this, we will be at Fern Dell at Griffith Park first thing tomorrow. I remember going there when I was a teenager. It is gorgeous. Griffith Park is home to The Griffith Park Observatory, and you can see the Hollywood Sign from there. We are going to the meeting place The Trails Café early, so my husband can have his coffee, and we both can have a healthy breakfast. The walk is only an hour. Stopped at the library a few minutes ago to get bird books. Really looking forward to it! Also if all goes well they have them at Malibu Creek and all over at beautiful spots. I have always loved birds, but there was a documentary on HBO about birders that really made me want to see if I could be one. So here goes!

there is something special about being out in the rain and standing still and watching rain drip form your wide brim hat.
I was out walking and geo caching in the pouring rain yesterday and I came to this conclusion as I signed the log book - with head tilted down to sign the log book I watched the water drip off of my hat and I felt satisfied and happy.
-- it could be the same standing there in the pouring rain looking at a bird too...

Getting out to look for birds
Squamish Estuary who knew it was so large and had different trails almost like separate parks. In the morning I went out with Dalhouise hiking the newer section on the west side of the channels for about two hours - came home ate lunch and then went out again with Noni and Dalhouise for another two and half hours. The second section is on the eastern side of the river and channel closer to town and the first developed.
Birds were there but not as many as I would expect - it was warm but the wind certainly was cooler when we first started out but we warmed up quickly as we moved.
Almost surprised a naked lady...
I was taking some pictures - talking to Noni and then walked a few steps and came unto an opening / beach area and there was a lady standing with a towel around herself and her clothes in a pile nearby. Was she naked maybe not -- but I think so.
It is too cold to swim - but I think she was sun bathing - trying to get a jump on her tan.
She seemed to be embraced - but who knows..
By the time we returned home Noni was getting sore again so today's length was just the right hike for her..

I thought I had a pet bird yesterday. He landed on our opened third floor balcony and stayed there all day through the snow and rain. Yes I have three feeders hanging just out side my glass door --and he did visit all three occasionally through out the day. Most often though he sat on the floor or in my planter flower pot looking inside at me and the Dalhouise.
Dalhouise would come and go and he did not seem to mind the dog one bit..
He was with me from the time I woke up around 7 am to about 5:30 pm .

Love - or something of that nature --- today as I walked around the pond I noticed that some mallard ducks were doing the act of baby making.
I use to own ducks on my little homestead in Ontario before I moved west and found my self living in a Condo and now walking to a pond nearby.
So as I walked around the pond today I spotted a Mallard head and a male on top - at first sighting one would think he is trying to drown her...

In the morning I walk around the pond spotting mallard ducks and eagles and a blue heron then in the afternoon
I went hiking with my friend on the Chief a hike to the First Peak: 1.5-kilometre trail with an elevation gain of 540 metres. (1771.65 feet)
I was looking for some birds and didn't notice any on that hike

- Next day - I am a little sore but doing well - not going to tackle the other peaks for a few weeks though..

don't figure - I replaced my suet cake in the feeder two days ago and just left the remaining little chunk on the patio table. Guess what - there has been no birds going to the new suet cake but to the little chunk -
I am watching this Northern flicker in my flower pot pecking away at a smaller chuck that has fallen off the table now - why not go for the brand new suet cake hanging in the basket ......

Yesterday, a bird bander, Fred Bassett, was able to capture and band a Rufous Hummingbird in our backyard. In the late 90's, Fred and others began to realize there were some Western US species of Hummers that did not migrate south but went east instead. We have planted our yard with hummingbird plants and maintain one feeder all winter. The freeze Tuesday in the south killed all our plants and the bird showed up at the feeder. I will add some more pics later today on the process.

I didn't take part in the Christmas Bird Count but my Dad did. Where he lives, that day the temp was -29C/-20F so the birds weren't out and about and he only got to count 18 species. But one was a Barred Owl so he was happy about that!

I participated in the local Christmas Bird Count for Audubon last Saturday. Our circle had a total of 137 species for our count area in North West Florida. Our best birds were Black Scoter and Western Kingbird. If you participated post your experience here.

Snowy owls are day hunters, and can be found where there are lemmings for them to eat. Listen to the radio clip in this link, very interesting! I'm going to have to put Birding By Ear on my Christmas wish list.

How about a 30 minute bird walk once per week and we can create a sticky topic of best bird seen on bird walk. What do you think?

Hello!

Would the Team Leaders consider adding a Team Goal? I'd like to have a goal of going on a birding walk once a week. I can add it to my personal goals page of course but maybe this would be a good one for the team too. It doesn't have to be an ambitious, long hike...any way in a natural or park area where birds can be observed.

Got a shock on scales this morning down to 208lb -2 but still not down to my pre chest infection weight at beginning of year which was 196 but I will get there and more
Its been a hectic month so far mams death funeral etc on Friday we started to sort through photos papers etc after 8 hrs non stop we hadn't made a dent we looked in wardrobes there are 4 full to bursting with clothes bedding curtains etc two dressing tables full a very large chest of drawers full then there is a cupboard under the stairs the kitchen and the loft but our pat isn't ready to deal with this the charity shops are begging for thing I think we could keep them going for 6 month but it will get done by the end of sept then house can go on the market. So haven't had time for much birdwatching other than my regulars in the garden which I have not neglected Today I woke up with a feeling of excess energy so I have sorted my pantry filled 2 large bags tin food to take over to JJ plus 5 carrier bag in the freezer that should keep him going for a while Have a good week everybody emoticon

I finally got some binoculars of my own and now I'm hoping for warmer weather so I can get out birding. I went out for a walk in a big park last weekend but all I saw were black capped chickadees. They're adorable, but I've seen them before. It was a cold day so I guess the other winter birds were getting cosy out of my sight.

It's so cold here i'm even feeling sorry about not feeding the squirrels. I've been putting away the Christmas decorations and trying to declutter, so I haven't had the time to watch the birds at the feeder.

We are finally having winter weather. The birds have really been eating my bird feed. (which remands me I'd better put out some suet). This year I have more sparrows and house finches. They are always little piggies.

I wonder what he (the hawk) was after? Your lucky you still have your nose!

I'm down here in Daytona Beach riding my Buell and all of a sudden there are feathers almost in my face. A red tailed hawk almost flew into me. Thank goodness it missed me. I got a really good look at it's tail feathers though. So glad we didn't collide.

YES! It is that time of year. We have had more geese than usual over head! The crows have been making a lot of noise as well. I am not yet feeding the birds as we have so must natural food for them around the house and on the farm. My Hubby and I both love the birds and well he has made our home a great place to watch the birds this time of the year by planting surbs, plans, and tees for the birds and us. We still have weed seeds, grass seeds a plenty. We will start feeding them after the first snow. Sound like your oak-leaf hydrangeas are beautiful. I don't have any of those. Please, Tell me about yours. Thank you! HUGS! Jenny

I hope you're enjoying your fall also!
My birds are surely getting ready....I'm back to throwing out seed twice a day as they are gobbling it up!
My oak-leaf hydrangeas are very pretty this year!

I know what you mean when you talk about them being puffed. It like they put on their warmer coat. I just love to watch them and it is getting cooler here for sure.

Well, we got a shallow bird bath yesterday and set it up next to the deeper one. I can usually look out my window as I work out so we'll see if they use it. I hope so!

---and it's either getting colder out or I am feeding the birdies way to much! They always look like Christmas ornaments to me when they puff out!

We have a place they can get water but it is on the ground and not safe as I would like.
