I am on a birding trip in Florida, south of Tallahassee along the gulf coast. The best bird yesterday was one of the tail pumping warblers. Palm Warbler. Great views of both the Eastern and Western races.

Came in yesterday tea time to find a robin had come in with me and was sitting ion the clothes airer by the fire he sat dor about 20mins so i decided to get camera out and he said not likely and flew about the room i put lights on right through to back door and whistled to him in each room and he followed me outside i quickly shut the door so he came round and pecked on kitchen window so i put some crust out for him
About 20 mins later my sil rang from Holland to say my brother Robin had been taken into hospital he had been vomiting black blood he was stable when she left last night
Every time i have opened door today the robin has been there waiting for me to invite him in
he gets a warm then goes out again he has done this several times today emoticon

Carolian-I love your update from NW England! We don't have many of those birds here in the US, at least not where I live. I live on near the western shores of Lake Michigan-one of the great lakes. I have lots of goldfinch, common redpolls, juncos, bluejays, house finch (that I am trying to turn into purple finch) and a red bellied woodpecker. Our state sponsored bird outing was cancelled this morning because of rain and fog. Darn! emoticon

I just came home from a night time Owl Prowl but we didn't see any owls :-(

But I got lots of tips on where to look next time and what environments they tend to hand out in.

Today I went birding at Humber Bay Park in Toronto. This is who I saw, many I'd seen before but some were firsts:

Black Capped Chickadee
Canada Goose
Chipped Sparrow
American Tree Sparrow
Mallard
Mute Swan
Bofflehead
Northern Pintail
Greater Scaup
Long Tailed/Old Scaup
Common Golden Eye
Red Breasted Merganser
American Coot
American Widgeon
White Wing Scoter
Redhead Duck
Ring Billed Seagull
Trumpeter Swan
Gadwall
Northern Mockingbird

AND an "accidental" which has a good story. We heard a bird chirping and couldn't find it in the trees...it was a caged bird on the balcony of an apartment nearby!

I live in an apartment so I don't really have birds in my backyard.

Last week I was in Florida and saw a whole lot of new birds! My favourites were the Painted Bunting, Florida Scrub Jay, Sandhill Cranes (those birds were everywhere, in packs!), Roseate Spoonbills, Pelicans (both white and brown!), and all the nice ibises and cranes. I'm just learning to identify birds, I was with my Dad and he was able to help identify.

So many Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, American Goldfinch, Downy Woodpeckers, and a few Red Belled Woodpeckers, and Harry woodpeckers. A delight to see and watch. Wishing you all A Happy New Year!

In spite of the warm weather on the east coast, our feeders have been very active. Lots of Mourning Doves, White-throated Sparrows and a Fox Sparrow! The Great Horned Owls are starting to nest at this time of year and that is why they are calling. They are setting up their territories. If you continue to hear them into December and January, then look around for the nest. They always take over an old nest, so look for crow or Red tail hawk nests. During the day, you may see the top of an owl head sticking out!

We rent a small house and there's a pond behind us. Today we counted 24 ducks frolicking in the water along with a blue heron. There's also 2 barred owls living in a dead tree nearby.

We have two gorgeous barred owls living in a dead tree beside our house. At night they sit on the garden fence watching for mice and other critters. I have had a lot of people tell us they are a bad omen, but I see their presence as a blessing.
