I could spend every vacation in Shenandoah and not get bored. It's the most beautiful place on Earth!

That is excellent Artspark. I'm glad you have so many things so near to you. I would love to see the peregrines diving! I have not been to Virginia, nor much of the eastern side of the US. So many places to go and see! You state also knows how to name things! Dismal Swamp, Blue Ridge Mountains. :D

Other than the Parks in this state, we have been limited with our pull along unit to short jaunts. There are Marine fossils along the James River, Fairy Stones in Patrick County and lovely bird watching in a kayak in the Dismal Swamp near Home. You can watch the Peregrines dive off cliffs in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You have to get away from the city to watch the stars, that is a fav with a nice blanket and a hot drink. Our amusement parks get a lot of attention but there is great food, music, theatre and history. Not to mention a rocket launch or two near Wallops Island. You could spend years in Virginia and not see everything.

Okay, Trinity site! I may have to add that to my bucket list. I hope the government is open by then, but I'm not betting anything of value.
Yay for tacky nonsense. Ward and I loved visiting the giant jackalope statue. Not least because our last names are Jackson and Lopes. Bought LOTS of postcards there...
Carlsbad will be wonderful. Have you already been to Mammoth Cave - not so far from you. Nighttime has nothing on the dark of a cave!
Happy planning!

New Plans!!

Okay so we didn't go to the Dunes due to weather and bad timing, so it is back on the queue.

The plan now is to do the old route 66 (what is left of it) and other near by areas starting April 1st!!
The planning is still in the early stages, but currently may include:

-Seeing the Trinity Site. It is only open two days a year so it takes careful planning. The government should be up and running by then right??
- Visiting Carlsbad Cavern. I went as a young kid, but since it is in the middle of no where, haven't been back.
-Tacky non-sense, more of a general statement than a specific thing :).

Love that list!

We plan on hitting the Dunes over Thanksgiving weekend. Relatedly there is a place near by that is a designated dark area for star viewing. Minimized light pollution. So we plan on going by there as well to take a look at the stars. It wont be like it was out west, but it should still be worth the trip.

We were not that impressed by Mt Rushmore either. We went and then left pretty quickly there after. We had more fun playing on some concrete dinosaurs we found on a hill in a park. They were probably from the 50s, not too safe but you were allowed to climb on them and it was wonderful.

So many places to go. The list just keeps growing!

I love wandering around this huge, amazing country I live in, but I've never done it in a vehicle I rehabbed myself! That is so cool.
I tend not to feel like I own things just because I've bought them - they're mine once I mess with them somehow.

Anyway, cool places for roadtrips. I'm trying to camp all the U.S. National Parks before I die, and those are rarely disappointing. Among my favorites are Shenandoah National Park, which I think is the most beautiful place on Earth, especially on a foggy morning. Olympic National Park similarly beautiful, but it's never dry enough to have the good footholds for rock scrambles. Shenandoah in the fall, after the waterfalls have dried up, you hike down these enormously steep rock faces with nobody else around and no more gear than good hiking boots. It's magnificent.
Mesa Verde National Park - see the Anasazi ruins and poke your head into their old homes and find cave drawings that are ancient and just stand in awe of how they lived.
Only national parks I've ever visited that I wouldn't recommend are Lake Meade National Recreation Area (you need your own powerboat with a big beer fridge to really fit in there) and Mount Rushmore (which is about as thrilling from the parking lot as from a postcard, and the postcard is quicker. I'm just bitter that we chose Rushmore over Devil's Tower of Close Encounters fame. Ooh! That's the next movie I should show to my astronomy club peeps!)

Other favorite North American stops that aren't national parks? Muir Woods north of the bay in California. I used to get in trouble with my parents as a kid 'cause I thought humans building a church and calling it a sacred place was sacrilegious. Parents thought I was trying to go to the park to get out of church but I honestly thought the woods was more sacred. Then I found a section of Muir Woods that I think was called the Cathedral Pines and I thought, "yes, THIS is the place to come worship the Creator!"
The midnight markets on the waterfront in Vancouver. Went with friends and we bought a bunch of unfamiliar fruits and veggies and asked the vendors what parts to eat and then sat on some driftwood in the dark experiencing these new textures and flavors in the warm breeze. A little piece of heaven.
Oh, and a day spent on the lakeshore in Chicago. Starting with a swim at the Point and then Sunday brunch with fresh squeezed orange juice at Medici on 57th and then working my way up the lakeshore bike path to an evening concert at Ravinia Park.

Oy, and you must know the Indiana Dunes. Need lots of mosquito repellent, but that was one of my best childhood summers.

Okay this isn't really science, engineering or math, but i love the topic and my lead in applies science, engineering and math principles so it counts right?

Okay so late last year DH and I decided we should get a cheap used van and convert it into a camper ourselves. So last fall we got a 2002 full size 1500 Chevy express conversion van with an extended topper. Whew!

We have spent the last few months striping out parts and building. The goal is to do most of it ourselves not just buy things to put in it. Two big reasons for this. 1. Price - anything camping or RV related is really expensive. We don't do expensive. 2. We like to have a project and enjoy having something we built. We don't talk about things we buy, we talk about things we build (or find).

The van's name is Buttercup. Bob built the name plate for the front. We have done a few small weekend trips so far as well as a week long trip to Colorado this past May. We are on Version 1.2 now.

This is very much a work in progress, but it has already been a lot of fun and we are really looking forward to going on adventures.

Anyone else road trip? Do or see anything fun? I love hearing about place to go and see.
