GREB,

Thinking out loud/in comments/etc. works wonders sometimes!!!

Sounds like you figured out the path back on the wagon ;-)

I am on WyzAnt. That's where the bulk of my tutoring is done. I guess I'm really picky about subjects -- mostly discrete math and younger SAT/ACT students. I also tutor "PhD mathematics" -- basically any grad level course that I'm qualified. I finally got an assignment in that area the other day. I suppose I could take more of the exams and do more variety.

I'm not sure about being on lots of platforms... just sounds like a headache keeping track of everything. But thanks for the suggestion :-)

ME:

Totally not drinking coffee for three (?) days now. I still drink tea and pop, but it's less caffeine. Baby steps, it's so hard otherwise.

Greb, I am glad you are getting your sleep! You also seemed to have identified some of your sticking points. Quality over quantity.

The wagon is rolling by, you should jump on!

My first full week went okay. I am down about 2 pounds (yah). The last two days kicked my butt due to migraines, but i think I am up and functional again. Now i just need to keep on keeping on....

Jeff, have you tried online tutoring matches like WyzAnt? I used a few of them a couple years ago when I needed a side gig and didn't want to do lots of advertising of my own. WyzAnt takes a big chunk of your fee, but the chunk drops as you stay with the same student over time. At least for me it was worth it. I could still clear $25 to $30 an hour, spending all my time on the tutoring, not the marketing.

I need to get on this wagon with you, and really Iím a little mystified about what Iíve done to myself. I lost 30 pounds about ten years ago and then kept it off almost effortlessly (because it really was a lifestyle change) for seven years, and then I moved to New York and completely reinvented my lifestyle.

My weight has been rising steadily, but somehow in the last five weeks of the summer I put on 10 pounds. For that to be fat and not water weight I would have to have overeaten by 1000 calories a day, day after day, which I canít believe I could do without noticing Iíd made a change, and which competes with my FitBit and SparkPeople food trackers that estimated I had a 500 calorie deficit most days. But if it were water weight it would have dropped back by now, and in fact I spent much of the end of the summer so dehydrated that I wasnít peeing more than once a day. My final explanation was that I was pregnant, but itís been several weeks since the spike started and I have convincing evidence that Iím not pregnant. So Iím just confused.

Hereís what I do know has changed since I moved to the city: Iím sleeping less, although Iíve pretty well reclaimed that since getting really sick last winter and committing to never letting my body get that worn down again.

Iím exercising way less. I get LOTS of walking (typically 22000 steps on school days) and climbing subway stairs and a pretty good habit of weight training at home. What Iím not doing is the sweaty, heart-pounding cardio I used to get from my volleyball meetup and morning runs and ice skating lessons and ... Part of that is financial - there are adult hockey lessons and a kickass adult synchro club that I would so love to join, but they cost hundreds of dollars and Iím living paycheck to paycheck these days. Most of it is time - itís illegal to run in the parks before 6 am and my pool opens at 5 am, but I need to be on the train toward work by 5:30 am.

And then thereís my eating habits. I eat a lot more lox cream cheese. Now that I write that, it occurs to me that a Boís Bagels poppy seed bagel with a thick layer of creamy salty lox cream cheese was my breakfast almost every day during the second half of the summer - thatís a 440 calorie breakfast according to the nutrition tracker. And I looked forward to it every single morning. Perhaps more to the point, I cook a lot less at home because I share my kitchen with roommates. And while I cook a lot in Ericís kitchen, nowadays I eat white rice instead of brown; white flour instead of whole wheat; a lot more of my protein is cheese instead of legumes, because Iím trying to make food the kids will eat.

Iím consistently getting 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep a night, and catching up within a day when Iím short, just because I made it a priority. Over grading papers, over hanging out with my favorite New Yorkers, over checking email and SparkPeople, over eating dinner. I canít ALSO make exercise and cooking my highest priority, and the truth is I moved to New York because I wanted to be able to spend more time with Eric and the kids. But maybe my metric shouldnít be spending time with them, but spending quality time. The part where Ellen and I were tossing a foam rubber snowman back and forth on the sidelines of Adamís football game that Eric was coaching I would like to keep; the part where Adam and Eric were watching football on one screen while Ellen and I were watching Netflix on the other was in every way unfulfilling.

Sorry, this was a super long exercise in my thinking ďout loud.Ē It was helpful for me, though, so thank you for tolerating me!

I have never heard of a peer specialist. That is a very interesting concept. Good for you for wanting to help others!

I'd like to work as a Certified Peer Specialist. I got my certification this summer. (For PA.)

In case you don't know, a Peer Specialist is someone who uses their own experiences with mental health and the MH system to hep others. Sort of a lot like a caseworker, only with lived experience rather than a degree. I'm way overqualified by having a PhD, but I don't care, I want to give the peer support thing a try!

I DO like to tutor. Just not sure I want to deal with the whole recruiting and maintaining a customer base.

The caffeine is going well. Getting enough to get rid of the withdrawal headaches, but much less than before.

Yah for passing physics with an A. That is fantastic. I hope the job market is looking good for you. Any thoughts on what you would like to do? Do you like to tutor?

Good luck with the caffeine, that can be a hard thing to drop!

I've been doing really good so far. I've been tracking my food and getting in my calorie burn.

Sounds like you're back on the path.

I passed physics (with an A) and am still looking for a job. I might be able to tutor full-time if I tried hard to get students.

I'm back on the path to getting off caffeine. NO COFFEE yesterday (yay!), but one bottle pop and like six cups tea. I have a PLAN for the next week or so on limits on caffeine.

So I'm gonna try to keep everything in check, but my goal right now is to reduce caffeine.

So I had my yearly physical with my doctor yesterday. Other than my weight I am doing pretty good (I'll be getting the lab results in a few weeks).

Other than the weight, ugh. So I think I am going to get back on the wagon and do something about it. I know if I track and workout I do lose weight, so that is what I am going to do. DH turns 40 next May, and we are going on a trip to the Pacific NW to celebrate. I want to be able to do all the active fun stuff without huffing and puffing due to carting so much extra weight around.

I've got 35 weeks, so I plan to lose ~36 pounds (as of this morning's weigh in). That will put me at 240. Still heavy but well on the path and in the weight range where I can actually rent a kayak if I wanted to.

Here's to day 1!
