12 miles --mostly walking. I have been coping with hip and ankle injuries on and off for the past 6 months but I felt strong for most of today's walk. I don't think I am going to make the required pace at the MCM in October, but at least I feel good for a change.

I ran between 6-7 miles without stopping yesterday (Sunday). I am trying to figure out the Iron Girl 10k course, but so far I keep missing 6.2 LOL.

I only ran/walked 1.36 miles today. But it was an Awesome accomplishment as I finally overcame my hurdle of running where others could see me! I ran in my neighborhood! I have been going to the track up to this point (and only if no one else was there). I am trying really hard to overcome my self-conscious embarrassment and today was a major hurdle! Now I can do my runs on my terms and more often during the week to stay on my training schedule. That first 5K is getting closer and closer. Now, if I could run for longer than 3 minutes at a time.....

I usually run/walk/jog 2.5 miles which takes me about 40 minutes - so that breaks down to about a 16 minute mile. Last night I made it 1.5 miles and had to give it up. I shouldn't have run at all. It was a very long day and I was tired and my legs already were sore from volunteering at a triathalon that morning - Directing traffic and cyclists is an exhausting endeavor I have found (over 520 entrants!). The family has thought about entering as a team - we will see how next year pans out!

Anyway, last night I made it 6 times around a 1/4 mile track before I just packed it in and went home. My left knee was hurting and I was exhausted. Wish I would have gotten out there earlier in the day. Oh well, live and learn. This is my third week since I started running and I am very happy with my progress so far - at least I am running now more than I am walking!

Today I will take a nice walk around town at my lunch hour- usually 2 miles or so. I feel ready to go this morning. I will get back to the track tomorrow.

Acoralsea,

Thank you for your long, interesting reply. Lots of great advice.

I usually run 5k twice a week and 10k once a week, but my training schedule is a bit erratic at times since I have a four month old at home to take care of. I will seriously consider interval and hill training when I get better and more used to running.

I want to run a marathon in the future, but I want to get there slowly and safely. Right now, running at a higher pace takes its toll on my joints and I don't want to risk an injury. I might do a half-marathon in the fall next year, but we'll see.

The morning "fatigue" is just regular morning sleepiness. Nothing to worry about really.

Anyway, I did 10k today. It is nice to run in the morning and see the city wake up. I shoud really do it more often.

Plenty of things taste as good as being skinny feels. :)

Xiuxie,

I hope it's really just morning sleepiness, not fatigue, that you're feeling early in the a.m. One should avoid trying to run fatigued, as it leads to injury. However, the early morning sleepiness can be dealt with.

Good job on your morning runs. Do you always target distance, or do you sometimes go out for so many minutes? Do you go on a longer run on the weekend? Switching up your routine to focus on time, with one long run per week, helps build your strength and endurance and without plateauing at a certain distance.

For example, however long it takes to do your usual morning 5K, go shorter the next time out, go longer on Sat or Sun. Your schedule might look something like:

Week 1
Mon 20 mins
Wed 30 mins
Thu 20 mins
Sat 4 miles (since you can already do 3)

Week 2
Mon 20 mins
Wed hills 6-8X (repeat for a total of 4 weeks)
Thu 20 mins
Sat 4.5-5 miles (week 3 drop back a mile, week 4 up to 5 miles, week 5 do 5 miles)

Week 6
Mon 25-30 mins
Wed intervals (for speed training) which you can do on a flat street or school track
Thu 30-45 mins
Sat 5.5-6 miles
Repeat intervals for a total of 4 weeks and step-ladder the long runs, adding no more than 10% (or .5-1 mile) on the you add distance.

Whatever days work best for you for your weekday and weekend long runs, be sure to allow rest days, and avoid running more than 2 consecutive days at a time in order to allow your bodynto recover. Cross-train on non-run days with a swim, strength workout or cycling, and allow at least 1 full rest day when all you might do is an easy walk.

Over time, you'll gradually build your endurance and distance to get to that marathon. I train folks for 26 weeks for our target marathon or half marathon.

Which brings me to another thing - if anyone outnthere has a marathon goal in mind, please target a half marathon, first, and only after you've done a 10K. You have to work your way up to the long distance.

Keep up the good work!

Yesterday, 2 miles on the neighborhood trail. Today, 1.8 miles - on the treadmill, which I absolutely hate, and didn't quite make 2 miles because my coach told me to slow down - how funny is that! She was concerned that my heart rate was up to 179, which I don't have a problem with, and wanted to me drop down to around 165. OK, fine...

You can not change yesterday - it's done.
You can only dream of tomorrow.
The only day you can change is today.
What are you going to do today to reach your goals of tomorrow?

It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it GREAT
